Hash functions are an essential part of, not only of the bitcoin protocol, but of information security as a whole. In the following article we'll take a look at some simple examples of how they work, with a simple demonstration, too. In the abstract, a hash function is a mathematical processthat takes input data of any size, performs an operation on it, and returns output data of a fixed size. In a more concrete example, this can be used to take a sequence of letters of any length as input what we call a string and return a sequence of letters of a fixed length. Whether the input string is a single letter, a word, a sentence, or an entire novel, the output called the digest will always be the same length. Acommon use of this kind of hash function is to store passwords. When you create a user account with any web service which requires a password, the password isrun through a hash function, and the hash digest of the message is stored. When you type in your password to log in, the same hash function is run on the word you've entered, and the server checks whether the result matches the stored digest. This means that if a hacker is able to access the database containing the stored hashes, they will not be able to immediately compromise all user accounts because there is no easy way to find the password which producedany given hash. This is a specification of the semantic data structures used by blocks and transactions. These data structures and rules are used for validation and hashing. This format is independent from the format for transaction wire serialization. A block is a block header together with a list of transactions . A transaction is composed of a set of entries . Each transaction must include one and only one transaction header , which references other entries in the transaction, which in turn can reference additional entries. Every entry is identified by its Entry ID . No two entries in a transaction may have the same [Entry ID]. Little Endian Base 128 encoding for unsigned integers typically used to specify length prefixes for arrays and strings. Values in range [0, 127] are encoded in one byte. Larger values use two or more bytes. A LEB128 integer with a maximum allowed value of 0x7fffffffffffffff (263 1) and a minimum of 0. A varint63 fits into a signed 64-bit integer. In my previous article, I tried to described the concept of a blockchain with code. This time, I'll try to describe the structure of a single block. I will use the Bitcoin blockchain to explain blocks, but keep in mind that the concepts will remain more or less the same. It could be useful to read my last article to understand a few things first. A block is a container data structure. In the Bitcoin world, a block contains more than 500 transactions on average. The average size of a block seems to be 1MB ( source ). In Bitcoin Cash ( a hard fork from the Bitcoin blockchain ), the size of a block can go up to 8MB. This enables more transactions to be processed per second. Anyway, a block is composed of a header and a long list of transactions. Let's start with the header. The header contains metadata about a block. There are three different sets of metadata: The previous block hash. Remember that in a blockchain, every block is inherits from the previous block because we use the previous block's hash to create the new block's hash. For every block N, we feed it the hash of the block N-1. Mining competition. For a block to be part of the blockchain, it needs to be given a valid hash. This contains the timestamp, the nonce and the difficulty. Mining is another crucial part of the blockchain technology, but it is outside the scope of this article. The third part is a merkle tree root. This is a data structure to summarize the transactions in the block. And we will leave it at that for now. More on this later. You may have heard that all data in computers, is either 0 or 1. The smallest piece of data is a bit, and is either a 0 or 1. Imagine a computer as having many light bulbs, and the bulbs are either on (1) or off (0). Different pieces of data are represented by the pattern displayed by the bulbs. Large data, such as videos, use many light bulbs. A short email, would use fewer light bulbs. A single light bulb is a bit. Another term you may have heard of is a byte, which is simply a group of 8 bulbs. A megabyte of data is 1 million bytes, which would be 8 million bulbs. Todays home computers have billions and even trillions of light bulbs. But with the power of doubling, notice that even just a group of 256 bulbs is almost enough to represent any of the observable particles in the universe. Imagine all the patterns that a group of 256 bulbs can produce, and it is an astronomical number: mathematically its 2 to the power of 256. A hash function, takes any input, and produces an output of a specific size. The process of applying a hash function to some data, is called hashing. The output of a hash function is called a hash. The basic feature of a particular hash function is the size of the output it produces. For the examples in this article, well use a hash function that produces an output of 256 bits (32 bytes). There are hash functions to produce smaller output, and others that produce larger output. There are also many hash functions that produce an output of 256 bits, but the examples dont care about which specific one is used. Using the example hash function, when a video of many megabytes is hashed, the output will be 256 light bulbs with some of the bulbs lighted.
