Africas First Bitcoin ATM Ready for May Launch May 20, 2014 at 19:10 UTC|UpdatedOct 2, 2014 at 10:04 UTC Johannesburg, South Africa, will reportedly become the first city on the continent to host a permanent bitcoin ATM this May. The start-up behind the plan, ZaBitcoinATM , says it ordered a Lamassu machine in February, and that it expects to receive the unit within days. ZaBitcoinATM revealed more details about the forthcoming launch in a Bitcoin Talk forum post , explaining: "We are in discussions with several restaurants/coffee shops and will be coming to a conclusion as to the final location once we have shown the interested parties the device." If all goes according to plan, Africa's first bitcoin ATM will be in service by the end of the month. Johannesburg may seem like an obvious choice for the country's first bitcoin ATM given its position as financial center, however, it may not have the only unit for long. A second bitcoin ATM is reportedly on the way, and it's coming to Cape Town. ZaBitcoinATM has invited Cape Town's bitcoiners to help choose the right spot for the unit via its Twitter account. Our next Bitcoin ATM will land in Cape Town, soon. Additionally, many view the remittance market as the biggest opportunity in Africa. Lamassu's Bitcoin ATMs use QR codes for users to access the crypto currency. A local company is set to launch what is claimed to be Africa's first Bitcoin ATM, in what it bills as a move to encourage the currency's use among consumers and retailers. Tremendis Learning - an IT training and recruitment company - will next week unveil a Lamassu Bitcoin ATM machine at MetroMan, a hair salon and life coaching centre based in Kyalami. Users can scan a Bitcoin QR code, insert cash and will then be able to trade the currency. Rolf Deppe, a partner at Tremendis Learning, says Kyalami was chosen because "MetroMan accepts Bitcoin for all its services. We are also doing work with other business owners in the same complex to accept Bitcoin as payment." Deppe notes that introducing ATMs will help consumers and retailers that are stuck between a rock and a hard place. "If someone has Bitcoin, they do not know where to spend it, and if merchants accept Bitcoin, they struggle to get customers [who are] willing and able to pay with it." The new ATM, says Deppe, could go a long way in bridging that gap. SA has 29 companies which accept Bitcoin payments, according to Coinmap - a Web site that tracks and maps businesses' crypto currency. MetroMan is one of six companies using the currency in Gauteng, according to the site. Despite the slow uptake of the crypto currency across the continent, Neil Croft - owner of Mahala Mobile and founder of local currency Madibacoin - says it is "never too early" to launch the machines. "If anything, it will create exposure to Bitcoin for those who have never heard about it." Croft adds that exposure does not mean people will be quick to adopt the currency. He recently announced plans to launch Madibacoin in the coming months, targeting SA's cellphone user Continue reading >>

First Bitcoin Atm Hits South Africa

August 21, 2014 Nicolise Harding Articles , Interviews , News & Events , Opinions The first Bitcoin ATM has hit the streets of Johannesburg. Rolf Deppe and business partner, Monre Botes, are the geniuses who decided to run the LamassuBitcoin vending machinefromthe new Metroman salon situated in Kyalami, Midrand. This willbe the nextstep to tweak the interests of all hipstersfor a face to face experience of Bitcoin currencies. We had a chat with Rolf, who together with Monre runs their business Tremendis Learning , about his future plans and venture into Bitcoin: How did you come across the idea for the Bitcoin ATM and why in JHB first? My business partner and I, Monre Botes were watching the Bitcoin ATMs sprout up all over the world, with a noticeable lack in Africa. By middle of February we decided to simply try it, ordered a Lamassu, and the rest is history. The location in JHB was chosen specifically as we live there, and we do need to get to grips with the new technology and setup, so having it close by was more suitable. How receptive is the JHB community towards Bitcoin? There is some interest, but I dont think close to what the interest is in Cape Town and Stellenbosch at the moment. Obviously, we would like to also drive the adoption in Jhb. What work challenge keeps you up at night? What are the biggest benefits and largest risks of doing business with Bitcoin? Obviously the possible growth and upside of Bitcoin is there. It is really in its infancy still, probably like the internet was in say, 1992? So if Bitcoin takes off like some expect it to, then the upside would be tremendous. The growth in usage and perceived value has been substantial in the last 5 years, eclipsing pretty much any investment known to man. The risks well obviously there is concern that Continue reading >>

Bitcoin has seen rapid growth globally over the last two years with millions of unique users making use of some form of digital currency. As with the rest of the world, most of these cryptocurrency users in South Africa are using bitcoin. And you can too but without the hassle of local or international exchange services. There are several ways of how to buybitcoin in South Africa that includes paying via Paypal, with your debit or credit card, buying from a bitcoin ATM or using Mycelium on your cell phone. However, it basically comes down to three options when buying bitcoin in South Africa and not earning or mining it: How to buybitcoin in South Africa from an international exchange It might seem simple to buy bitcoins at the USD price from a USD based bitcoin exchange, but you might need to cross some hurdles such as buying it using USD, as they will not accept Rand. Although possible, it remains quite costly, time and effort-wise. Keep in mind the cost of converting to USDs at the banks exchange rate. Apart from this it takes some time for the money to arrive at the bitcoin exchange from South Africa. It costs a fee to send it thereand you must explain why you are sending it there. Lastly, you have a limit of how much you may send. The exchange itself will most probably also charge an exchange and withdrawal fee.In the end, this could end up costing more than the bitcoin rate on a local exchange, depending on the circumstances. South Africa's First Bitcoin Atm Comes To Johannesburg - Memeburn

By Staff Reporter on 20 August, 2014 Memeburn If youre not virtually mining it or relying on the kindness of the internet, the most common way of getting Bitcoin cryptocurrency is to trade at an exchange. The latter requires you to make an EFT, which can take a few days to complete, and requires you to manually match bids on the exchange. Another option is trading your cold hard cash for Bitcoin. This is done using a Bitcoin ATM like Lamassus machine recently launched in Johannesburg, South Africa the first of its kind in the country. Rolf Deppe and Monre Botes from local IT coaching company Tremendous Learning are responsible for this initiative. The machine was installed in Kyalami, Johannesburg at a mens salon called Metroman , and the pair hopes to implement more machines across South Africa in the near future. According to the site, the machines cost US$6 500 (about R65 000) each. TechCentral further notes that the machine charges a transaction fee of 6% that goes to Tremendous Learning. We are also looking at putting machines in Pretoria and Cape Town, but we will use a much cheaper model that costs about R10 000, says Deppe. To use the machine, youll need a Bitcoin wallet on your smartphone ( see list of popular alternatives ). The Bitcoin ATM then scans your wallets unique QR code, takes the cash youve inserted, and voila! You have yourself some cryptocurrency in a matter of seconds. These are exciting times for the digital currency in South Africa. Just a few weeks ago PayFast partnered with the local exchange, BitX, to add a Bitcoin payment option to more than 30 000 online shops , including one of the countrys largest commerce sites, Takealot. You may have heard about Bitcoin, the virtual currency that was invented in 2008 - If not, consider yourself lucky to now stumble across the opportunity to learn more about it. Through the use of open-source software, users can transact directly without needing an intermediary (central authority or bank) to manage the transactions. The issuing of Bitcoins is carried out by the network. This is essentially an innovative payment network and a new kind of money. Bitcoins can also be obtained in exchange for different currencies, products and services. Bitcoin has grown in popularity as a form of payment for products and services and merchants are more open to accepting it because unlike credit cards, any fees are paid by the purchaser, not the seller. This innovation is now available in South Africa with the first vending machine now installed. Local users are finally given the capability to get Bitcoin for Rand (ZAR). The machine is run locally by the business, Tremendis Learning. The vending machine dbuted in South Africa in Kayalami, north of Johannesburg at a business called Metroman. Understandably, the use of Bitcoin by South African vendors is still limited but the focus for now is to educate merchants about it. To get Bitcoin at the vending machine, consumers need to have a Bitcoin wallet installed on their smartphone. To achieve this, numerous apps have been developed. The apps generate a code that the Bitcoin vending machine can read and use to deposit the purchased virtual currency. The tech savvy workings behind this vending machine may seem rather complex, but in reality the concept works almost like a normal ATM. In terms of security, the machine will be smash and grab resistant and as a precaution will not be left unattended or outdoors. It really is exciti Continue reading >>

Sas First Bitcoin Atm Finally Launches!

Sas First Bitcoin Atm Finally Launches!

Not sure whether this will be the right place to post this. How about a sub thread for 'Crypto currencies'? Its bound to become more and more relevant in years to come. Johannesburg's Bitcoin community received a boost with the launch of what is likely the first Bitcoin ATM on the African continent. The machine was set to launch in May, but was apparently delayed until now. The machine was officially open for business last Friday at 9 am local time. Unfortunately, the Lamassu machine has the capability of accepting cash in exchange for Bitcoin, but not the other way around. One of the strongest arguments in favour of Bitcoin in Africa is the idea of remittance. As the documentary film Bitcoin in Uganda outlined, those who live and work abroad and wish to send money to their families back home face exorbitant money transfer fees. Some companies will charge up to 40% of the amount transferred. However, with Bitcoin, the transfer fees are not only built into the protocol, they're incredibly low in comparison. On top of this, they require no intermediary to perform. One only needs to be able to transfer their bitcoins into local currency, which Bitcoin ATMs can provide. Unfortunately, though, the Lamassu machines are incapable of such transactions. Lamassu did, however, recently release an open-source version of their software which they claim will make it easier for Lamassu operators to get into the remittance market. Regardless, though, the launch of South Africa's first Bitcoin ATM is a welcome addition to Johannesburg's Bitcoin community. The machine, operated by ZABitcoinATM, is located at Metroman spa, at Cnr Pitts Ave & Dytchley Rd. Continue reading >>

Will We See A Bitcoin Atm Kenya Wide?

Will We See A Bitcoin Atm Kenya Wide?

Here we analysze that question, as a possible solution to Kenyas banking problems. Kenya has a long and rich (excuse the pun) history of problematic banking. Over 30 banks have gone under in the last 30 years. The case for Bitcoin in Kenya is clear. In the mainstream Kenyan press Michael Kimani recently made a compelling argument for electronic cash broadly, and Bitcoin more specifically. The piece only appeared in print, but was very well received. His fascinating article came on the back of a run on Chase Bank Kenya. This was after social media reports that the bank had misrepresented its loan situation. Chase was the third Kenyan bank in less than a year to face such issues. Kimanis piece focuses primarily on electronic cash. His affinity for Bitcoin as a money substitute is well documented, particularly on social media. Opinion: Why Kenya Should Embrace Virtual Currencies via @techweez Michael Kimani (@pesa_africa) 31 May 2016 Of course, we agree with Mr. Kimani. We are fans of his work and general contributions to the space. In his article Mr. Kimani notes that Kenyas recent banking troubles behove us to look at alternative forms of storing value. Will see a Bitcoin ATM Kenya Wide? As a solution to Kenyas banking woes The Central Bank of Kenya is following the larger global pattern, tightening its noose around the cash economy. We are left to wonder how exactly Bitcoin can really assist Kenyans. Perhaps the answer lies in Bitcoin ATMs. We have covered the topic of Bitcoin ATMs before. They have met with some degree of success in South Africa. Though globally, they havent really taken off. Yet they do provide a simple and effective way to get Bitcoin into an economy. Bitcoin ATMs area possible solution for any economy where the banking system is ailing and the citi Continue reading >>
