Whatever fun there was to be had with cryptocurrencies, it seems, has been smothered by wads of cash. Reddit Has Been Quietly Banning Cryptocurrency Ads Since 2016

Reddit Has Been Quietly Banning Cryptocurrency Ads Since 2016 Google, Facebook, and Reddit have now all banned cryptocurrency and ICO advertising on their platforms. Screengrabs: YouTube, Reddit. Composition: Author On Wednesday, Googlewhich operates one of the largest ad networks in the worldjoined advertising giant Facebook in banning ads for cryptocurrencies . It might seem like these companies are ahead of the curve in setting best practices around marketing an emerging technology, but Reddit beat them to the punch years ago. The site just didnt make a big deal out of it or anything. Reddit is a massive message board with thousands of sub-forums called subreddits, and its a central hub for conversation around cryptocurrencies. The Bitcoin subreddit, /r/Bitcoin, has over 700,000 subscribers, and /r/Cryptocurrency has 600,000. At least one new cryptocurrency was born on Reddit in the last year alone. Basically, it seems like the perfect place to hawk an Initial Coin Offering, or ICOcrowdsales for cryptocurrency startups wherein investors purchase digital tokens. According to a Reddit spokesperson, however, cryptocurrency ads have been banned on Reddit since early 2016; a change that the company didn't highlight in a dedicated announcement. Last week, a poster on /r/Cryptocurrency wrote that Reddit is following Facebook after their ad was rejectedas we now know, its the other way around. Ads for cryptocurrencies and ICOs have not been allowed on Reddit since early 2016, the Reddit spokesperson wrote Motherboard in an email. Reddit Gold Pulls Bitcoin Payment Option

Reddit Gold Pulls Bitcoin Payment Option

The premium version of the online forum Reddit used to let you pay for an upgraded membership with the cryptocurrency, bitcoin. But in the past few days it looks like the ad-free version of the site isn't as gung-ho on the digital coin as it once was. When I went to sign up Monday for a month of Reddit Gold I was given two payment options: PayPal or credit card. A conversation two years ago in the " goldbenefits " sub-reddit conversation shows that bitcoin was an option at one point. Comment from discussion Are there any other payment options for Gold? . Now with bitcoin below $8,000 , it looks like it's fallen out of favor on the message board site. Though, as Cointelegraph first reported, it looks like the decision was based on cryptocurrency exchange Coindesk changing its terms of its merchant service Coindesk Commerce . To confirm this is the case we reached out to Reddit, who referred back to a Reddit admin's comments about the Coindesk changes and the slim chance that the cryptocurrency will return to the site. The admin wrote over the weekend, "The upcoming Coinbase change, combined with some bugs around the Bitcoin payment option that were affecting purchases for certain users, led us to remove Bitcoin as a payment option." Reddit Says It Has Banned Cryptocurrency Ads Since 2016

Reddit says it has banned cryptocurrency ads since 2016 Stop Motion by Michele Doying / The Verge Tech companies like Facebook and Google , have recently announced that theyre banning ads for digital currencies. It turns out that Reddit has been banning cryptocurrency ads since early 2016, but just never announced it outright in a press release, as first spotted by Motherboard . Today, Reddit extended its policy, to block cryptocurrency-related Google cached ads as well. The banning might seem odd, given that Reddit is a burgeoning platform for cryptocurrency enthusiasts, and given its nature as an anonymous open-discourse forum. There are many subreddits that discuss the various cryptocurrencies and nuances behind mining , investing in different currencies, accessing the dark web, and even posts by Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin and Litecoin founder Charlie Lee on updates to the currencies. Reddit told The Verge in a statement, Ads for cryptocurrencies and ICOs have not been allowed on Reddit since early 2016...Sections II.5 and II.6 of our advertising policy prohibit improbable, or unsubstantiated financial products and services and the promotion or advertisement of single securities or other tradeable financial assets. Still, for a time that only meant ads served by Reddit and it didnt apply to Google-generated ads that are personalized to your cookies. So if a user had browsed a lot of initial coin offerings and investments, those services could appear in a Google-served ad on Reddit. Now that Google has banned cryptocurrency ads and Reddit has blocked those cryptocurrency advertisers, the social media market for digital coin ads is shrinking. Continue reading >>

Reddits Biggest Cryptocurrency Forum Is Banning Memes And Shilling

Reddits biggest cryptocurrency forum is banning memes and shilling Reddit has gradually cemented its reputation as the go-to place for all sorts of banter and discussions around the cryptocurrency and blockchain space and the popular /r/Cryptocurrency forum has played a central role in this trend. But due to its unexpected growth over the past few months, /r/Cryptocurrency is changing its rules . In a recent post , the communitys moderators announced the updated policy aims to curb a growing number of co-ordinated misinformation campaigns from individuals seeking to benefit from manipulating the market. After receiving confirmation from the Reddit Admins, of numerous professional and highly-orchestrated manipulation groups being identified, as well as having the Reddit Admins site-ban more than 800+ manipulator accounts in a single day, the moderators explained, We set about to make a series of rule changes that we believe will combat these challenges. For starters, the community is moving all comedy and meme posts to the new /r/Cryptocurrencymemes subreddit, which will be precisely dedicated to this sort of content. This means all meme submissions will now be removed from the main subreddit, and moved to the newly founded one. The moderator team is also upping its criteria for what falls under the Low Quality/Off-Topic Posts category. Unfortunately, professional shilling and manipulation groups use a frequent flow of low-quality posts about a coin to try and promote their interests, the announcement read. This action is ultimately misguided, while the goal is to promote their coin to adopt more users, their coin just becomes seen as spammy by the larger crypto community and it ends up hurting everyone involved, it continued. In order to reduce spam and shilling attack Continue reading >>
