Even if you dont turn a profit, at least youll have something interesting to look at while you weep over your electricity bill. Sick of seeing the desktop machine he built a decade ago gathering dust, [plaggle24w5] decided to use it as the base for a cryptocurrency mining rig . Of course, none of the original internals would do him any good, but the case itself ended up being a useful base to expand on. With the addition of some 3D printed components, he stretched out the case and installed an array of video cards. To start with, all the original plastic was ripped off, leaving just the bare steel case. He then jammed a second power supply into the original optical drive bays to provide the extra power those thirsty GPUs would soon be sucking down. He then designed some 3D printed arms which would push out the side panel of the case far enough that he could mount the video cards vertically alongside the case. Three case fans were then added to the bottom to blow air through the cards. While[plaggle24w5] mentions this arrangement does work with the case standing up, theres obviously not a lot of air getting to the fans on the bottom when theyre only an inch or so off the ground. Turning the case on its side, with the motherboard parallel to the floor, allows for much better airflow and results in a measurable dip in operating temperature. That sounds like a clever attempt, but also overthinking things. Unfortunately, even if you could connect the parts the way you imagined you couldn't get the intended performance because the low power CPU on a pi board isn't up to the task of managing that array of GPUs. Even if most of the work is done on the GPUs, a CPU is needed to manage what you could call the data flow. What we're calling this "flow" for now is more or less proportional to the work demanded by the GPU(s). Look up the phrases "gpu bottleneck" or "cpu bottleneck" on google for more detailed information. The idea though, is that a certain balance is needed to get the parts to work. If you want to mine, you'll need a high end CPU, on a desktop board. Quite the opposite actually. You can mine with the same hashrate on low end cpus vs a high end i7 or ryzen. Cpu usage is very little and runs just about only the os. You'll see most getting/suggesting low end pentiums for lower power usage. Others are using older hardware (althons, core 2, apus, whatever) they already had but they tend to be higher power usage. Whatever gets them the best value. They get the same hashrates as long as the cpu isn't a potato struggling to run windows. It's just easier to get a pc running gpus than it is to get a rasp pi to do the same. Everything else put aside - The "saving" you would make from replacing an Intel/AMD motherboard with RPI parts is negligible compared to the price of 8 GPUs you're planning to use. It was worth my while, because when my six year old daughter wants to watch a movie on the media center, she always calls it one of daddies movies.:) In 2013 I learned about something that sparked my interest. The Bitcoin. A friend of mine was talking about it and told me what it was and what one could do with it. Turns out Bitcoin is the first decentralized Cryptocurrency payment system ever invented by an entity known as Satoshi Nakamoto. The cash of the Internet, so to say. So I started learning more about Bitcoin, how it worked, and what its possibilities were. I have been successfully building cpp-ethereum on Raspi for a while now. I can confirm up to poc7.8 I am currently writing more formal steps to post but simple steps are: 1. I use ua-netinst to install Raspbian jessie - 2. You will need a USB drive to set up a temporary swap partition (needed for both Cryptopp and ethereum builds) as, surprise 512MB ram is not sufficient for the install. Swap, however, is not needed to run eth or alethzero. 3. Follow install instructions for cpp-ethereum - Ubuntu Trusty14.04 4. Make sure you run cmake and make around dinner time, this way when you wake up in the morning the cpp-ethereum build MIGHT be complete. If not, before beginning, make sure the Pi is being powered from your laptop so you can, utilizing your laptops battery, complete your morning commute with a Pi hanging from your laptop until you get to your office and plug in again.(remember to ignore stares from co-workers). Is the raspberry pi capable of bitcoin mining without one of those USB miners? I know it would be slow and inefficient but I am looking at it from an educational standpoint rather than commercial. I have found dozens of tutorials but they all involve one of those USB devices. Are the really required or is it just not effective to be without them? The USB devices used to mine bitcoins are what actually does the processing (as even a regular CPU would not be able to do it efficiently), I believe (don't quote me here) they used either an FPGA or ASIC which allows data to be processed very fast but only in a very specific way. So if you can get one of those to work on a Pi, it shouldn't run significantly slower than on a desktop or laptop. Mining just with the SoC will be hopelessly slow, but if you want to use this for education then showing the difference in speeds would be a good demonstration of the application of coprocessors. You can use the base RPi operating system and with the help of WiringPi you can get easy control of the GPIO pins of the Pi, even direct console one with the GPIO utility. Of course you can install a web server with some basic visual interface as well, simple buttons to drive on/off the relays connected to the GPIO pins of the Pi board. If you have a spare Raspberry Pi 3 you have up to 28 channels available to drive on/off relays, though based on our experience only 25 of the GPIO puns are actually reliable usable. Pins 2, 3 and 14 have a bit of erratic behavior being in high (triggered state) when the Pi board boots up or temporary switching on and then off when rebooting the board, so it is wise to skip them. Another possible issue is the GPIO pin 0 (the bottom white one) as using zeroes can be tricky when programming something, so be careful with that one as well. We have been using the relays to short the on/off button on the motherboard forcing the mining rig to shut down and then start up again. This works surprisingly well and you avoid the need to work with the high 110V/220V mains power going through the relays that can cause problems for not so experienced users.
