First Bitcoin Vending Machines Appear In Malaysia

First Bitcoin Vending Machines Appear in Malaysia The first vending machines for the increasingly popular cryptocurrency, Bitcoin , has appeared in Malaysia. Singapore-based Numoni Pte Ltd has installed two Auto Vending Machines (AVM) in Bangsar Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur and Gurney Plaza in Penang last weekend. The new AVMs were installed after Numoni announced the Bitcoin AVM in Spain last month. The company also installed four AVMs in its native island state. Interestingly, the company is looking to install another eight AVMs for a total of ten Bitcoin AVMs this year, and a total of 100 over the next three years. Numoni is especially pleased to launch our machines in Malaysia as the machines are assembled in Malaysia in our Senai factory. The machine was fully developed by Numoni in Singapore since 2012, said Numoni CEO Norma Sit. These Bitcoin AVMs work by reading a Bitcoin owners unique QR code, and accepts 22 physical currencies to purchase the cryptocurrency. These AVMs are also fully secured with banking security. The AVM will show the current exchange price of Bitcoins in real-time, and then forwards the users purchase request to the Bitcoin Exchange. Numoni states that the transaction can be completed within one minute. The Bitcoins are then dispensed as vouchers , presumably to circumvent the Bank Negara Malaysia statement in January that Bitcoins are not recognized as legal tender in the country. The installations of the new Bitcoin AVMs come the weekend before the commencement of the World Bitcoin Conference that is happening this week. Continue reading >>

Bitcoins Not Regulated Here, Warns Mas

Warning comes even as suppliers plan to roll out more vending machines By: Yasmine Yahya Finance Correspondent | 04 Mar 2014 (From left) Tembusu Terminals partners Peter Peh Sik Wee, Jarrod Luo and Andras Kristof at the launch of its bitcoin vending machine at the Spiffy Dapper pub at Boat Quay last Thursday. The MAS has sounded a note of caution, saying that those who use virt THE Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has warned consumers to be cautious about buying and using bitcoins as they are not regulated here. The warning comes even as the bitcoin vending machine suppliers already have plans to roll out many more islandwide. The MAS told The Straits Times in a reply that it does not regulate bitcoin, including its purchase, sale or use, whether online or via other means such as vending machines. "Virtual currencies, including bitcoin, are not legal tender and are not recognised by the MAS as an official medium of exchange or as a form of securities," it added. The MAS also warned that consumers and merchants who use virtual currencies such as bitcoins should be aware of their risks. For example, the value of bitcoins can fluctuate greatly within a short period of time and so consumers and businesses might suffer monetary losses as a result of this volatility. They may also be unable to obtain a refund of their money should such a scheme cease to operate and may have no legal recourse as bitcoins are not issued by any identifiable organisation. With Singapore having six such machines so far, the number could soon double. As the machines accept only cash for bitcoins and not the other way around, the MAS refers to them as vending machines rather than ATMs. The three bitcoin vending machine suppliers, Numoni, Bitcoin Exchange and Tembusu Terminals, say that while t Continue reading >>

First Bitcoin-vending Machine In Msia

KUALA LUMPUR: Singapore-based Numoni Pte Ltd has launched its first Bitcoin vending machine a virtual currency or crypto currency in Malaysia, a move undeterred by the recent turn of events with regard to Bitcoin that alarmed regulators in many countries. With an estimated 1,000-2,000 users in Malaysia, Numoni hopes to see users of the virtual money grow in the country despite not being recognised by the Malaysian central bank as a legal tender. Bank Negara Malaysia has no role in regulating the Bitcoin market but has warned users to be cautious while using the virtual currency. It is a voucher, not a currency. We will abide by the guidelines and follow the rules set by the regulators in the country, said Numonis CEO Norma Sit last Friday while launching the vending machine in Kuala Lumpur. She, however, added that if the guidelines become very stringent, the company may have to avoid the country. It is a trade-off that we will have to make, she added. The company, a payment transaction provider is looking at increasing the Bitcoin machines to 10 within a year and 100 within three years. Currently, there are Bitcoin-vending machines at Bangsar Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur and Gurney Plaza in Penang. Customers can use the Numoni Bitcoin vending machines to buy and sell Bitcoins through a simple cash-out process working with retail merchants cash-out points. Numoni has elected not to implement the cash-out mechanism for Singapore and Malaysia. The cost of each vending machine for Numoni is about US$4,000 (RM13,229). Bitcoin, a digital crypto currency, took centre stage recently with issues surrounding Mt Gox, a Bitcoin exchange based in Tokyo, which was reportedly hacked. It later ceased operations and filed for bankruptcy. The episode, led Singapores central bank to Continue reading >>

Tembusu Launches 2nd Bitcoin Machine

Tembusu Launches 2nd Bitcoin Machine

It is holding back on two-way machine for the moment [SINGAPORE] AS Tembusu Terminals launched its second bitcoin vending machine here yesterday, the bitcoin party continued - but some operators are mindful about keeping the music down in the wake of regulatory attention. A week after the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) said that it would introduce regulation to curb money-laundering and terrorist-financing risks, the bitcoin community is trying to understand the lay of the land. Tembusu, for example, already has the technical capability to produce a two-way machine with cash-in and cash-out options - that is, allowing the conversion of bitcoin into fiat currency and vice versa. But its two machines thus far launched are one-way ones; they only take cash for bitcoin, because the venues hosting them do not require the cash-out function, Tembusu said yesterday. Even so, the firm is not in a hurry to introduce two-way machines, given how the rules are being written even as the bitcoin industry develops at breakneck speed. Jarrod Luo, one of Tembusu's founders, told The Business Times: "We are still being briefed by our regulatory team and talking to MAS . . . We don't want to open ourselves up to the possibility of regulatory backlash if we haven't done our research right." The regulations that MAS proposed last week will oblige bitcoin exchanges, brokers and machine operators to verify the identities of their customers and report suspicious transactions. These rules are expected to kick in within the next 12 months. Tembusu's second machine, parked at a business centre called the Eclat Office Club on Mohamed Sultan Road, does not have know-your-customer (KYC) functions installed, though these can be retrofitted, Mr Luo said. Singapore has seven bitcoin machines ope Continue reading >>

The company thats rolling the AVMs out here in Malaysia is Singapore based company Numoni Pte Ltd and they first showcased the AVM in this years MWC. And where are the first of the machines located? In KL Numoni has installed it over at Bangsar Shopping Centre while Gurney plaza is the lucky mall in Penang that has the AVM machine installed. So do we even need Bitcoin AVMs here in Malaysia at all? According to Numoni CEO Norma Sit, despite the troubles the crypto-currency has gone through, it is still in demand and Malaysia has potential for its uptake. With that in mind, were not going to be seeing just two machines as Numoni intends to install 10 Bitcoin AVMs within a year and 100 AVMs within three years. Now thats a lot. Bitcoins arent the only thing that these AVMs can dish out. They can also be deployed to sell prepaid airtime and Numoni will work with local telcos to implement the service. Although there is a community of Bitcoin users here in Malaysia, the uptake of the crypto-currency isnt exactly widespread here not to mention in most parts of the world. Itll be interesting to see just how Malaysians will react to Bitcoin, especially since itll be a little more easier to purchase, if Numonis roll out plans come to fruition. Its still going to be a tough sell since the cash is king mentality is still pretty prevalent for most consumers. Continue reading >>

A Look At The Booming Market Of Bitcoin Atms

A look at the booming market of Bitcoin ATMs All new consumer technologies share a similar story arc: introduction, adoption, proliferation, attrition and consolidation. Eventually the best brands or best-marketed rise to the top; others are absorbed or fade into obscurity (remember Compaq?) At the moment, we're seeing the story play out for the Bitcoin ATM. Early market entrants namely Lamassu and Robocoin are encountering increased competition from a growing list of challengers. It remains to be seen which brands will become the Apple and Microsoft equivalents in the segment. We've put together a list of players to watch as the future of the Bitcoin ATM unfolds ... BitAccess was founded last November in Ottawa, Ontario. The company's Bitcoin Automatic Teller Machine, (or BTM, as they call it) lets the user deposit cash and instantly receive a digital wallet containing Bitcoin digital currency. BTM users can also exchange Bitcoin for traditional currency. The machine operator needs just three things, the company says: a location, a wired Internet connection, and a source for Bitcoins (an exchange, local supply or personal account). BTM features include: three models basic one-way, basic two-way, and high capacity two-way; Bitcoin wallet can be generated at the machine; a linked QR code identifies the wallet in subsequent transactions; transfers enabled via Bitcoin address entry or QR code scan; BitAccess fees based on amount exchanged; additional operator fee set at owner's discretion; basic configurations start at $7,000; the machine can be customized to meet specific requirements for additional cost; Munich-based BitXatm touts its "unique POS function" as a key differentiator for its Sumo Pro Bitcoin ATM, and as of May, it was the only one of the major providers (i.
