Indias Supreme Court Keeps Ban On Banks Crypto Services, For Now

Indias Supreme Court Keeps Ban on Banks Crypto Services, For Now According to a team of Indian lawyers, the Supreme Court of India refused request for a temporary injunction against restrictions imposed on banks regarding cryptocurrency by the countrys central bank. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a circular essentially banning crypto services, which will remain in place at least until a formal hearing. Theyve been particular watchful of goings on regarding Indias central bank, RBI, and its recent circular demanding banks it serves shut down any business with cryptocurrency companies. Through a petition challenging the RBI ban, enthusiasts hoped by this week to see some relief at the countrys highest court. An interim measure employed by most courts around the world is to cease a particularly controversial action until such time as a final decision can be made. And it was just such a move crypto advocates were hoping would be followed during the petitions consideration: allow banks to continue serving cryptocurrency clients as they had prior to the RBI ban. Yesterday, the Supreme Court instead declined an interim injunction, for now allowing the RBI ban to stay in place. It was a blow to the near dozen representatives from Indias crypto community. It is important to note that such a procedural decision theoretically has no bearing on the eventual outcome of the petition for relief itself. The case will return before the Supreme Court May 17th. The Reserve Bank of Indias circular from April ordered wit Continue reading >>

The Great Indian Blockchain Migration Has Begun

The Great Indian Blockchain Migration Has Begun

What do you do when all those you interact with in your business are suddenly made out of your bounds? You search desperately for a place where transactions with your ecosystem are permitted. That is precisely what actors in Indias blockchain ecosystem developers, services providers, and other companies are doing by moving bag and baggage to crypto-friendly destinations or at least seriously considering the option. The migration has been triggered by various moves of the Indian government to ring-fence all things cryptocurrency in the country as a result of which fledgling blockchain players here are looking for more friendly places. Some even compare it to the brain drain in the dotcom boom that lead to a virtual exodus of topnotch tech professionals to countries with better opportunities. We are having talented people and companies from the blockchain space move out of India. There are enough countries out there who realise the importance and want to take a lead in the blockchain ecosystem, says Joel John, an analyst at UK-based Outlier Ventures. This comes on top of a trend where startups and companies from India anyway find jurisdictions such as Singapore and Ireland attractive for tax, startup funding, and other reasons. Companies moving abroad is not a new trend but the regulatory complexities faced by blockchain companies have accelerated it, says John. They can easily fly down to a Malta, Singapore or a Cayman Island, set up the company and start working on their product. You rather lead a technology wave than play catch up. The product, he added, may still be developed in India even if the company is registered abroad. There are a few blockchain destinations that are attracting the Indians each with its own pluses and minuses. Singapore, Estonia, the UK, Switz Continue reading >>

On Indias Growing Appetite For Blockchain

On Indias Growing Appetite For Blockchain

On Indias Growing Appetite for Blockchain Indias financial services industry has a great chance to benefit from the innovations brought about by Blockchain technology. There is more room for Blockchain technology to grow in Asias second largest economy, India. Though the technology is still in its nascent stage, it has made in-roads into multiple industries globally, including in India where its potential to create widespread impact in the banking and financial services industry is becoming more visible and garnering interests. The interests have increased the number of Blockchain-based use cases that could drive operational efficiency and improve customer experience in Indias financial services industry, says the Chief Information Officer of Indias fifth largest private sector bank, YES BANK , Anup Purohit. There are multiple experiments being performed on distributed ledger technology, like testing the use of smart contracts leading to self-executable contracts, transforming the age old letter of credit, or streamlining and shortening the trade finance process without much intermediary intervention or KYC processing etc. The bank, which has leveraged technology to offer an improved banking experience, is one of those showing interest in Blockchain for its efficient processes, transparency, security and seamless connections to maintain records and make quicker transactions. Purohit explains that they are creating a Blockchain banking solution for their clients which would have an immediate, measurable impact, and provide a quantum leap compared to the current process. Consequently, we were the first in the industry to implement a multi-nodal Blockchain transaction to fully digitize vendor financing for one of our corporate customers. The entire debate rests on the cap Continue reading >>
