Why I Sold All My Ethereum Today And Converted It All Into Bitcoin : Bitcoin

It was a very hard moment for me, but I was minded by the great Andreas Antonopoulos, it takes discipline to be a good trader. Buying when everything feels down is tough, but necessary if you want to profit. This is the most important mantra: buy when most people are selling, sell when most people are buying. I was trying to figure out why it was so hard. I made a very good multiple on my original ethereum investment. I should be happy realizing those profits. I realized it was my greed to follow everybody else. Otherwise I'd be missing out. What we're seeing today is our generation's .com bubble. When people are throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at eight pages of white paper, it doesn't take a genius that maybe, just maybe, each of those pages aren't worth $25 million each. I do believe that one day, ethereum will be the transformative vehicle for new companies that will mint the next Google and Facebook. It'll be the agent that will change our lives as we know it. But that day is not today. Fortunes will be lost and lives will be ruined. There are so many obstacles that ethereum has yet to tackle. Enacting a transformative change from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake, the chances of finding a show stopping bug in smart contracts, even just a whiff of one of the giant ICO companies imploding is enough to get weak hands to fold. And there are so many weak hands in ethereum. The vast majority of people investing in ethereum and ICO's haven't had the bitter taste of an equity dropping to 10% and having the discipline to hold on. How do you have confidence a bridge will hold when a 200-ton semi truck drives across? When 200 of those trucks have already driven across. Bitcoin has been around for 8 years. It has weathered attacks from the most determined hackers, gone Continue reading >>

Ethereum Vs Bitcoin - The Difference In Focus : Ethtrader

Ethereum Vs Bitcoin - The Difference In Focus : Ethtrader

I feel like a lot of posts lately talking about the possibility of Ethers being the choice of currency to be accepted by merchants and traders. I feel like this is a bit of distraction from what Ethereum's focus should be. Again these are my two cents, and not an edict on how others must act. Bitcoin and bitcoiners have thrown their focus behind getting Bitcoin to displace dollars and gold (as a medium of exchange and as a storage of wealth). Whereas, Ethereum is focused at expanding the usage of currency to areas previously not possibly by traditional mediums (like Smart Contracts). Bitcoin may not be able to replace dollar as a day to day currency (which depends upon whether Bitcoin manages to get around their scalability concerns), but even as bitcoin is today, it is completely capable of displacing dollar as the international currency of trade among nations. In other words, while you may not wanna use bitcoin for buying a $5 latte from starbucks, that usage is completely different from using Iran using bitcoin to sell India natural gas. A 2 hour wait time may prevent Erik Voorhees from buying coffee with bitcoin, but this does not bother the foreign minister of Iran the same way (as long as enough of other countries are willing to use bitcoin). Similarly, Ethereum is looking towards creating new markets, markets previously thought not possible. Contrary to the beliefs of bitcoin Maximalists, bitcoin is completely not capable of facilitating the same things Ethereum can or to be able to beat Ethereum's headstart in it. In other words, while bitcoin focuses on capturing the old or existing economy, Ethereum focuses on capturing or creating the new economy. I expect a rational cryptocurrency investor to hold both Ethereum and bitcoin in their portfolio. I could be wro Continue reading >>

Unless youve been hiding under a rock, youre probably aware that were in the middle of a cryptocurrency explosion . In one year, the value of all currencies increased a staggering 1,466% and newer coins like Ethereum have even joined Bitcoin in gaining some mainstream acceptance. And while people like Jamie Dimon of J.P. Morgan and famed value investor Howard Marks have been extremely critical of cryptocurrencies as of late, many other investors are continuing to ride the wave. As weve noted in the past, the possible effects of the blockchain cannot be understated, and it could even change the backbone of how financial markets work . However, even with the excitement and action that comes with the space, a major problem still exists for the layman: its really challenging to decipher the differences between cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Litecoin, Ripple, and Dash. For this reason, we worked with social trading network eToro to come up with an infographic that breaks down the major differences between these coins all in one place. Here are descriptions of the major cryptocurrencies, which make up 84% of the coin universe. Bitcoin is the original cryptocurrency, and was released as open-source software in 2009. Using a new distributed ledger known as the blockchain, the Bitcoin protocol allows for users to make peer-to-peer transactions using digital currency while avoiding the double spending problem. No central authority or server verifies transactions, and instead the legitimacy of a payment is determined by the decentralized network itself. Bottom Line: Bitcoin is the original c Continue reading >>

Eli5: What Is Ethereum And What's So Special About It? - Cryptocurrency

ELI5: What is Ethereum and what's so special about it? I need the most watered down, accessible, digestible version you got please. EDIT: I haven't logged in for a bit and saw these pretty awesome responses when I did. Thanks for taking the time to explain. Bitcoin was supposed to be programmable money, that's why it initially gained so much popularity when it wasn't as much of a currency yet as it is today. However, in the past 4 years, the "programmable" still hasn't taken off due to developers and the community all focusing their attention on the blocksize debate, the censorship at /r/Bitcoin and fighting that all out. Ethereum stepped in to fill in that gap. They have designed a Turing-complete scripting language on the Ethereum network, which makes it much easier and convenient for programmers to actually start building programmable money. Through Ethereum, it is now possible to write Smart Contracts (programmable money) and that for any currency you wish, including Bitcoin. The relationship between Ethereum and Bitcoin So Ethereum and Bitcoin can be see as a couple that can strengthen each other. But Ethereum can exist and work entirely without Bitcoin. From Bitcoin's point of view, things are different. As long as the Bitcoin community doesn't get their shit together and aren't completing the "programmable" money part in the Bitcoin network because they stay too busy fighting each other, Bitcoin will not have easy programmable money without the help of Ethereum. Last but not least, each script gets executed on the Ethereum "computer" (the Ethereum network can be seen as a giant world computer). This computer doesn't do this for free. Just like Bitcoin fees exist in the Bitcoin network, Ethereum demands an Ethercoin-fee for each script that gets executed. And tha Continue reading >>

The Difference Between Bitcoin, Litecoin, And Ethereum. : Litecoin

The Difference Between Bitcoin, Litecoin, And Ethereum. : Litecoin

We have a lot of new people coming here that probably know little to nothing about cryptocurrencies, and would love to have this question answered after seeing "litecoin" and "ethereum" on Coinbase after getting into it for the first time since only hearing about "bitcoin" on the news. Everyone tries to describe crypto-currencies using an analagy, but whatever, mine is a unique little snowflake so I will share it with you; One of many new features that comes with all crypto-currencies is that information is tied to each coin (or fraction therof): Imagine every time you spend a dollar, you write down the time and who you gave it to on it in permanent ink (somehow legibly). Litecoin and others all work this way, with the chain being traceable all the way back to the day the coin was born in some hairy nerd's basement in 2013. Also, you can write comments on the dollar like jokes or bomb codes or cryptic shit about your weekend in Vegas. Ethereum gives up on being money and focuses on being used for "Smart contracts". Basically, expanding the size of the margins we can scribble on to the point where it's becoming something we didn't even know it could like a flip book or skynet or some shit. Bitcoin is just the old version of Litecoin. It will never be outdated, just stay more expensive to move. Litecoins are literally "lighter" in both time and fees to move it. The "Litecoin is silver to Bitcoin's gold" may sound prophetic, but whoever coined it was a genius. Continue reading >>

This Will Happen To Bitcoin Or Ethereum? Total Btc Will Be : 21 Million, But What Will Be The Total Of Ethereum? - Bitcoin

This Will Happen To Bitcoin Or Ethereum? Total Btc Will Be : 21 Million, But What Will Be The Total Of Ethereum? - Bitcoin

This will happen to Bitcoin or Ethereum? Total BTC will be : 21 million, but what will be the total of Ethereum? No. According to the terms agreed by all parties on the 2014 presale, issuance of ether is capped at 18 million ether per year (this number equals 25% of the initial supply). This means that while the absolute issuance is fixed, the relative inflation is decreased every year. In theory if this issuance was kept indefinitely then at some point the rate of new tokens created every year would reach the average amount lost yearly (by misuse, accidental key lost, death of holders etc) and there would reach an equilibrium. But the rate is not expected to be kept: sometime in 2017 Ethereum will be switched from Proof of Work to a new consensus algorithm under development, called Casper that is expected to be more efficient and require less mining subsidy. The exact method of issuance and which function it will serve is an area of active research, but what can be guaranteed now is that (1) the current maximum is considered a ceiling and the new issuance under casper will not exceed it (and is expected to be much less) and (2) whatever method is ultimately picked to issue, it will be a decentralized smart contract that will not give preferential treatment to any particular group of people and whose purpose is to benefit the overall health and security of the network. So, it does not sound like it has a hard cap at all and it sounds like they're a bit behind on their 2017 Casper stuff too. The total supply of ether and its rate of issuance was decided by the donations gathered on the 2014 presale. The results were roughly: 60 million ether created to contributors of the presale 12 Million (20% of the above) were created to the development fund, most of it going to ear Continue reading >>
