Review: Ledger Nano S Bitcoin & Ether Wallet

Wer also grere Bestnde Bitcoins oder Ether verwaltet, sollte langfristig darber Continue reading >>

Blockchain Address Explained: What Are Addresses On Blockchains?

Blockchain Address Explained: What Are Addresses On Blockchains?

in cryptocurrency 2 years ago (edited) Blockchain Addresses are an important concept in cryptocurrencies and blockchains. In my guide, i explain what addresses are, how they are created and what the differences between different kind of addresses on different blockchains are. In the early days of Bitcoin, it was possible to send payments to an IP-address like 52.206.89.4 (which is steemit.com). This was planned to be a convenient method to use Bitcoins without dealing with unhandy public keys and addresses. However, after the Bitcoin developers realized that this way of sending coins could be subject to serious man- in-the-middle-attacks, the option was disabled and did never come back. This anecdote of Bitcoins early days seems to have mostly historic values. But it demonstrates what an address is: It is not something special or something set in stone. It is just a placeholder to accept and send blockchain transactions. Like an IBAN or SWIFT address. The address itself doesnt matter, nor does its format. The only thing matters are that the address serves its purpose to enable payments to an entity which has a unique information. Usually, a private key, to exclusively access the funds. The address is nothing but a secure identifier. However, while SWIFT or IBAN numbers are assigned by central authorities like banks, blockchain addresses exist. Every blockchain address possible already existed, long before a wallet found it. The reason is that blockchain addresses are the result of a mathematical operation. The Public Key: Where the Blockchain Address Generation begins After Pay to IP had been abandoned in Bitcoin, P2PKH became the new standard format for Bitcoin addresses. You might know it; it looks like this: 1K31KZXjcochXpRhjH9g5MxTHPi123zEXb A standard P2PKH addres Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Hardware Wallet: Ledger Nano S Review

Little Known Ways To Blog Better In Five Days BITCOIN HARDWARE WALLET: LEDGER NANO S REVIEW Until this week there has not been an Ether hardware wallet available. I just received mine today and wanted to share my review and impressions of the significant hardware wallet. Trezor was the first commercially effective bitcoin hardware wallet , followed closely by Ledger. While Trezor used a microprocessor Ledger decided to use a smartcard secure element. While both companies had their lovers there were a few problems with the first Ledgers. You had to initiate the Ledger on a safe computer and a safety card needed to be consulted to authorize a transaction. Ledger was not as easy to use as Trezor. Thats no longer the case with the new Ledger Nano S. The Nano S impresses as very well constructed and the plastic body measures just over a quarter inch thick. Unlike before Ledgers which plugged directly to a computers USB type A female interface the Nano S has a female USB Micro B port. It ships with the necessary cable so nothing additional to buy unless you will need to use it with a telephone. Other browsers like Firefox will be supported shortly as well. Just select the U2F program on apparatus and set it with your preferred service. Once you get your Nano S use your Chrome browser to see start.ledgerwallet.com. You may select Nano S from the choices presented: When You have selected Ledger Nano S you may next be presented with a screen for the first steps with your Nano S: Select configure my apparatus and the initialization process starts directly in your Nano S. Connect into your computer with the supplied USB micro cable. You will set up a four letter PIN directly in your Nano S and also be presented with 24 seed words to write down. The device asks you to validate thr Continue reading >>

I was wondering if there is a way to transfer Ether from Coinbase to GDAX and then transfer to the Nano S. I ask this because there seems to be a fee when transferring directly from Coinbase to the Nano S. However, I've seen videos for bitcoin where GDAX does not charge a fee to transfer bitcoin to the Nano S. Does that capability exist for Ether as well? Thanks for keeping it simple for us! Thanks for the walkthrough, huge confidence booster , it made a big difference seeing someone go through the steps in real time and actually use real crypto instead of an example of what would happen which I saw a lot of on other users crypto videos. Nice video. Perhaps you could also demonstrate saving on withdrawal fees. Move your coins from Coinbase to GDAX and then withdraw to your Ledger Nano S. Mov Continue reading >>

Ether Hardware Wallet: Ledger Nano S Review

Nano S is also the first hardware wallet where your seed is only ever displayed on the screen of the device. Thats not true the Trezor and KeepKey both use a setup process which generates the key on-device and displays it on the screen. You are correct about setup but the crucial difference between Nano S and the competition is restoring the device. If you lose your Nano S and need to restore the seed to a new Nano S the seed is entered on the Nano S, not the computer. Your host computer never sees the seed. This difference combined with the smart element makes Nano S the most secure ether and bitcoin hardware wallet you can buy at this time. allegro101, you are mistaken on this restore point on trezor, please change your article and comment. When you do a restore on the trezor, it is mostly done in the trezor, and not done on the computer. you claim the host computer sees the seed, which is untrue and you clearly havent used a trezor if you say that. it asks for random words from your seed on the trezor device and you enter them one at a time on the computer. you start typing and can use the cursor keys to choose the words you want. even if someone were capturing your screen or keyboard with malware, they wouldnt have access to your key (and at worst theyd know the 24 words but not their order!). i think the process is secure (and much easier to do than the ledger nano s, which is quite fiddly entering 24 words with just two buttons, a letter at a time). you can do a restore on a trezor much faster than a restore on a ledger nano s. luckily we dont do that very often, except in test. On the whole i agree with your review, however to be fair, you need to point out some features its missing, as well. 1. doesnt support HD wallets on the Ethereum side. i.e.: it only has o Continue reading >>

Avoid A Shapeshift Failed Transaction | Adding Shapeshift Return Address

ShapeShift 101: Why you should add your return address when doing a transaction Submitted by Emily on Thursday, October 08, 2015 Our support team can tell you, we get A LOT of requests for funds to be returned after a transaction has failed. Although we do our best to get back to your return requests within an hour during our business hours, we understand it can be a pain to have to wait for your funds to be returned. GOOD NEWS! We have an instant solution to your return problems. No, it's not a new feature, but one we have had on the site since our launch. The optional "return address" box. We know you have seen it, but not everyone uses it. By using this return address box, you will receive your depositing coins back in the case of a failure, which can happen for various reasons. We encourage our users to utilize this option to make your ordering process as seemless as possible. It's pretty dang easy. All you need to do it go to your depositing coin wallet, get an address to send funds to, and input that address in that box and *BAM* done. If your order fails, your funds will be sent right back to your wallet. The return address box can be found on the left side of the website under the depositing coin drop-down menu.
