Ethereum Wallet Syncing Problems

One of the most common problems with the Ethereum Wallet application is keeping the blockchain in sync with the Ethereum network. This page describes some of the common issues users may encounter while trying to sync the blockchain and potential methods to work around the problems. Note that Ethereum Wallet will not display your account balance correctly when it is not synced fully or correctly. Check that your the clock on your computer is close to real time. Change your system settings so that your system clock is synced to an NTP (Network Time Protocol) server. Slow Syncing Between Blocks 2,283,397 And 2,717,576 You may be encountering some problems syncing Ethereum Wallet (or Mist) to the Mainnet blockchain. A common problem when syncing Ethereum Wallet's blockchain data is that the syncing slows down between blocks 2,283,397 and 2,620,384 due to the attack on the Ethereum network (reference Why is my node synchronization stuck/extremely slow at block 2,306,843? ). The syncing also slows down between blocks 2,675,055 and 2,717,576 due to the state clearing process to remove the 20 million empty accounts created by the network attack. If you have a problem with slow syncing, the easiest way to recover from this slowdown is to remove your blockchain data and restart Ethereum Wallet. Ethereum Wallet will then perform a fast sync which skips over these attack blocks. WARNING: Make sure you back up your keystore directory so you don't accidentally delete your account information. Depending on your operating system, you will find the chaindata subdirectory in: Alternatively, you can run geth removedb to remove the blockchain data. Start Ethereum Wallet. It should now start fast syncing the blockchain data. Alternatively, run geth --syncmode "fast" --cache 1024 console an Continue reading >>

Writing An Ethereum Wallet Forfun

Writing An Ethereum Wallet Forfun

Up-front Expectation Management: this article is not meant as a coding tutorial, but rather as an exploration of wallet fundamentals. I will not be pasting a lot of code into this article, but I have uploaded the finished project to GitHub, and link to it at the end of the article. I use Jaxx as my mobile Ethereum wallet, and I noticed it occasionally acting oddly. It would show my balance correctly, but occasionally the transaction history would have missing transactions. Other times it would show duplicate transactions. Sometimes it would show the right transactions, but the overall balance was wrong. However, if I tried to send a transaction, it would suddenly know my real balance. While I dont have huge Ethereum reserves, it is still disconcerting when anything storing value appears to be unreliable. I should mention that despite the user interface issues, Jaxx has been otherwise very reliable. Let's take a peek behind the scenes, and try and write our own wallet. Can make a wallet without such user-interface inconsistencies? I assume you know a bit about Ethereum (or cryptocurrencies in general). Specifically: Asymmetric Encryption (private/public keys) You should know what private/public keys are. Ethereum supports (at the time of writing) two types of accounts - externally owned, and contract accounts. We will ignore contract accounts - smart contracts don't have, and don't need wallets. The type of account every human Ethereum user has, is the externally owned accounts. Each externally owned account has a corresponding private key somewhere, with which the account's transactions are signed. An Ethereum wallet - at a fundamental level - is basically a user-interface for using a SECP256k1 private key to sign transactions and submit them to the network. While you Continue reading >>

The first time I opened it, its stuck at Syncing blocks 0.00%. Its been like this for almost an hour. This is a very common issue - happened to me as well. If it lasts for more than a few minutes check your internet connection and restart. If its stable and continues. Then try resetting the blocks on your machine. Type %appdata% on the explorers address bar Type ~/Library/Application Support/Daedalus Make sure you have your mnemonic phrase written down, as this is the only way youll be able to recover your funds if anything goes wrong. If this doesnt work you may want to try syncing your computers clock with a time server. On mobile so dont have specific directions but Google sync system time. Well I dont know how but I launched the application today after 2 days and its working awesome. The wallet is just amazing, neat and clean, and Im lovin using it. i also have same issue with the new mantis client 1.0 Type %appdata% on the explorers address bar but when i open daedalus folder that is not have DB-1.0 so what can i do now for syncing back the block ? Explanation coming from the Grothendiek team. TDLR: The Mantis Client connect to nodes to Fast Sync and thats why the progress stays at 0%. You can download the Bootstrap file to expedite the process. Yes Bootstrap the ETC db as recommended. Otherwise downloading the states may take a while, with no change in the % however if you open up the Mantis Logs you will notice the client receiving blocks. Once the states are synced the blockchain can then be downloaded and youll notice a change in x.xx%. We are working on a screencast demo on how to download, verify, install, and configure Mantis Daedalus Wallet. Continue reading >>

Thought I'd move my wallet install to a more secure machine than the one it is currently on. The "new" machine has a Celeron G1610T (2C2T 2.3 GHz), WD Green 2TB HD, 8GB ECC ram, running Win7 64. I installed the same software as on my other system from , imported my key or whatever it is called, and let it sync. Over a day later, it is still going. I did restart it once earlier. The old system has a SSD in it, so maybe that helps it sync faster, but I was also concerned about the write load on it. Look at the new install stats above, in ~30h there has been a total of over 550GB writes to the disk. I can't say for sure it is the Ethereum client, but nothing else should be doing much. Right click on the ethereum-wallet.app and select show package contents Open contents, then frameworks, then node, then geth and voila. Then you should right click on geth and select show info. Other recommended changes to Windows I had performed were: Ensuring my PC clock time was synchronised with internet time (it was accurate) Manually setting the Windows page size as per: Specifically opened the Ethereum ports for TCP 30303 and UDP 30301 on my router as described here: Which TCP and UDP ports are required to run an Ethereum client? Whether any of these contributed to it being much faster after the geth removedb Im not sure, but each of those may well help you. The complete download of 1,500,000 blocks finished after about 10 hours, so the blocks definitely appear to take longer to download the greater the block number, due to the increased number of transactions contained in each block. How To Fix Ethereum Mist Wallet Never Ends Syncing

How To Fix Ethereum Mist Wallet Never Ends Syncing

How To Fix Ethereum Mist Wallet Never Ends Syncing I had an issue with the Ethereum Mist wallet never finishing syncing the blockchain. Mist just kept downloading chain structure for two days, always stuck a couple of hundred blocks behind the most current one. Download the latest version of Geth and extract it to somewhere like C:\Geth ( ) Run CMD.exe (Command Prompt, the black terminal window in Windows) as Administrator (right-click -> Run as Administrator) Change directory to where you extracted Geth: Run the following command to start syncing the blockchain using the light syncmode: It should now start syncing. After a while (how long varies), you will notice it reaches the current block and becomes less active. You should now be able to run the Mist wallet without issues again. Download and run the latest Mist wallet to avoid other bugs/issues ( ) Hope this helps someone out there with the same annoying issue! Continue reading >>

Ethereum Wallet Review Mist

Ethereum Wallet Review Mist

JP Buntinx June 25, 2017 Reviews , Wallet Not too long ago, we discussed a lot of Ethereum wallets people can use to store their coins in a safe and secure manner. One of the wallets on that list is the official Mist wallet for Ethereum, which has undergone some big changes over the past few months. Now is a good time to look at what this wallet looks like and whether or not it is suited for most people. The Mist Wallet for Ethereum Yay or Nay? From a security point of view, it makes a lot of sense to download the Mist wallet . It is the official Ethereum wallet client developed by the same people who are responsible for moving the Ethereum ecosystem along. Unlike some other solutions, this is not a third-party wallet. Instead, Mist is designed to put the user in full control of their funds at all times, which is nice to see. Moreover, the Mist wallet supports two types of wallet solutions, which is quite interesting. On the one hand, Ethereum users can set up a simple wallet, which does everything you would expect. The Mist wallet has a very nice user interface, which makes it quite easy and appealing to use. Do keep in mind this is a desktop client, which means users need to download it onto their computer manually. Mist also provides users with a multisignature wallet, should they require the extra security at any given time. As beautiful and convenient as the Mist wallet may sound, it is not without (significant) drawbacks, though. Mist is not a lightweight client by any means. This means users are forced to download the entire Ethereum blockchain before they can use the wallet. Right now, that blockchain is quite large, and it may even grow to 1 terabyte in size over the next year or so. Ethereum users need a lot of free hard drive space to synchronize with the bl Continue reading >>

Firing Up The Light Ethereum Blockchain

Firing Up The Light Ethereum Blockchain

Software developer and co-founder of Blockchain Manchester. Firing up the light Ethereum Blockchain If you have ever tried to get the Ethereum Blockchain synchronised on you local machine it can be slow and frustrating. You start googling and all the information is either old and/or fragmented. You may eventually piece it all to together but it is harder than it should be. Even the official documentation is often out-of-date. I realise this technology is moving fast but I believe it is essential to make it as simple as possible to get interested parties up and running. The barrier to entry should be as low as possible, people want to play with Ethereum not wade through endless old forum posts. Working with the Ethereum Wallet in lightmode As of October 2017, the Ethereum Wallet (used to send ether about and deploy smart contracts) and geth (the official Ethereum client written in the Go programming language) have matured to a level that you should be able to get up and running a few hours (or even quicker) if you are happy to run in light mode. As geth 1.7.x has the ability to use the LES protocol v1 . The Light Ethereum Subprotocol (LES) is the protocol used by light clients, which only download block headers as they appear and fetch other parts of the blockchain on-demand. The good news is Light Client integration (from v0.9.1 onwards) is now built into the Ethereum Wallet . Light syncing time decreased by an order of magnitude, compared to running a full node. Same as for storage requirements. Some users may still want to sync the full chain if they require all the chains data locally. Also, remember light mode is relatively new so may have a few kinks to be ironed out. In summary , Full Sync: Gets the block headers, the block bodies, and validates every element fro Continue reading >>

How To Sync Entire Ethereum Client In 2-3 Hours For Testnets & Mainnet

Blockchain Council | Blockchain-council.org How To Sync Entire Ethereum Client in 2-3 hours for Testnets & Mainnet How To Sync Entire Ethereum Client in 2-3 hours for Testnets & Mainnet Most of the people spend hours & days to get their Go Ethereum client synced to start the Ethereum or Solidity development . But they face tons of problems in doing that and end up getting frustrated leading to no progress or huge delay in the development . Go Ethereum Client for Mainnet needs to sync the entire Blockchain which is in multiple GBs right now. Not everyone has the 1TB of HD, especially the MacBook owners. Sync is very very slow, for my Ubuntu based machine it took more than a month on EC2 server which has very fast internet. So its not the internet problem. Many sync bugs haltthe syncing leading to start from scratch. Too much confusion regarding on which testnet the node is running when the network is switched to Testnet as there is no clear name. Ropsten, Kovan, Rinkbey are some of the testnets which are good for the testing. Ethereum & Mist wallet does not show you the name of the test net easily. If all the above issues are frustrating you then you must switch to Ethereum s Parity node which is designed to overcome these issues. This not only syncs everything fast but also gives you very nice Dapp browser & web interface to interact with the Ethereum network along with other powerful features. Parity is the Ethereum node designed to overcome many of the issues which exist in the other Ethereum clients & wallets (Ethereum & Mist wallet ). As per their website fastest and lightest Ethereum client and integrated it directly into your web browser . Using it you can access all the features of the Ethereum network including powerful Decentralised applications and the multit Continue reading >>

Ethereum Wallet Not Syncing! - Ethereum

Ethereum Wallet Not Syncing! - Ethereum

I have reinstalled the Ethereum Wallet after trading away my mined Ether on an exchange and removing it some months ago. Upon startup of the wallet, a bar is displayed at the top showing peers connected, blocks left, and syncing progress. However, peers are always under 10, blocks left seems to be stuck at ~1.8 million, and syncing progress seems to be stuck at 0%. I have let my computer run for a few days and none of these parameters have changed. When I ran the Ethereum Wallet previously, I was able to sync to the blockchain using geth with 'geth --fast --cache=8192' (I have 24 GB of RAM) in git bash, but now I want it downloaded on a different hard drive, not at the default location. I set that new location into the wallet parameters as I was reinstalling it, and it created the directory I wanted. Despite the wallet seemingly not syncing, geth is using high RAM (2GB) and disk usage (10+ MB/s), and when I look into the /geth/chaindata/ folder in my new, correct directory, I can verify that files (such as '562092.ldb', one of the more recent ones) are being added at high speed, as if syncing was happening, not at the speed of normal blockchain growth. /geth/chaindata/ is 60 GB large and growing. However, from my observations of this directory's size I believe it grew ~50 GB in the first day and only ~10 GB in the two days thereafter. What do I do to solve this issue? Can I have geth in its own git console, like I used to, but have it run on my new directory? Or can I get some other type of node? I have disk space, and I'm ok with using it, actually, I'd prefer to have my own copy of the blockchain, but being able to actually hold and send Ether is more important. Continue reading >>
