Change your system settings so that your system clock is synced to an NTP (Network Time Protocol) server. Slow Syncing Between Blocks 2,283,397 And 2,717,576 You may be encountering some problems syncing Ethereum Wallet (or Mist) to the Mainnet blockchain. A common problem when syncing Ethereum Wallet's blockchain data is that the syncing slows down between blocks 2,283,397 and 2,620,384 due to the attack on the Ethereum network (reference Why is my node synchronization stuck/extremely slow at block 2,306,843? ). How long to download Ethereum Blockchain? So I downloaded the Ethereum-Wallet(MIST) because I want to get into altcoins as well as Bitcoin. When I started the Wallet, it started downloading the Ethereum Blockchain. This is more then 24h ago at it seems the closer I get to finish downloading the whole thing the slower the download I mean it's getting ridiciulous with this massive blockchain downloads and the wiaitng time, especially because I download around 15GB so far. 15GB I could download in less than an hour so why does this take so long with these blockchains I thought its like a p2p download, And o another note the number of total Blocks seem to be changing while downloading. I wouldn't have been surprised if it would grow bigger because of more transactions in the blockchain etc. but it is jumping frim 1,480,000ish to 1,580,000ish Blocks... back and forth... I don't think is an issue with the hardware. I had the same issue with Mac with 16GB/I7 and solid state. I solved somehow, don't know which action in turn is the key, but I stopped using Mist and instead launched directly geth from command line. Make sure you have the latest. Then I tweaked with the params. I then finished to use the followings: Then the machine slowly but steadily loaded all the blocks, I needed to restart the process 3-4 times but finally worked. Download the latest version of Geth and extract it to somewhere like C:\Geth ( ) Run CMD.exe (Command Prompt, the black terminal window in Windows) as Administrator (right-click -> Run as Administrator) Change directory to where you extracted Geth: Run the following command to start syncing the blockchain using the light syncmode: It should now start syncing. After a while (how long varies), you will notice it reaches the current block and becomes less active. You should now be able to run the Mist wallet without issues again. It's been three days and the wallet has not synched. The "downloading chain structure" never ends. What options do i have? It usually does take a few hours. But if it's taking too long, you want to check other things like - is a firewall/antivirus blocking anything, are you behind a proxy and can you try on another network, any specific issues shown in the log file? The issue is that it's been 3 days and the chain structure just keeps on growing, just never ends. Same here. It looks like this isn't a priority for fixing or they just can't repro it. @kc1116 I've been sync'ing for almost 3 days, and it is almost done. ~4 M blocks, 11M states. I'm trying to init a second custom Ethereum node with geth. I displays an error message "wrong genesis block in database". I understand that this is because of the first node initialization. How do I run another custom node without deleting the old database? I found another post saying there are 31 million, and my sync did not complete like I thought. Can someone tell me how many chain structures\states there are to download during a sync? I'm on day 4 of the sync, and this is killing me, as at one point I read there were 11 million, but now I am at something like 15 M and saw somewhere saying it is over 31 M. This has got to be one of the main Achilles heals of blockchain, as in several years as use of Ethereum explodes, won't the sync become impossibly long and drag the whole project down with it? Also, I am assuming that each time I have to restart the process, the chain structure starts rebuilding after the last one like the blocks do. Syncing never really ends, because as new blocks are mined, you have to receive them to know the current state of the system. However, these new blocks are mined at a rate of roughly one each 20 seconds. This rate is sufficiently low for you to use your computer. Mining needs complete syncing as you have to mine from the last block. If you can't sync until end, then you have probably not enough RAM to sync, but in this case I believe there is no point trying to mine. That is normal because there are many transactions happening in ETH now and it will really take a long time for it to resync and that is one of the reasons why I hate that kind of wallet when it comes to old coins. If you don't want that, use their web wallet that is more convenient to use but it is more vulnerable in phishing. It is fine though just enter your private key on the original site of mew.
