Frontier was the first phase of Ethereum development, launched in July 2015. It was intended primarily for people with a technical background, considering that interaction with the network itself was done primarily through the command line (an interface not all people are familiar with). Frontier was a bare-bones network made of basic parts needed for it to function. The purpose was to develop and test decentralized applications, to test different tools, and to start mining Ether. Homestead is the second phase of Ethereums development, launched on March 14th 2016 (Pi day). It activated on block 1,150,000 and it brings many protocol improvements which lay the foundations to future upgrades and for speeding up the transactions on the network. The third Ethereum phase is very interesting and brings us many changes and novelties like security updates, smart contracts getting smarter, and permitting a larger degree of automation. Metropolis also makes using Ethereum easier for regular people with light clients (programs which do not need the whole blockchain downloaded locally, which could take a hundreds of gigs) like Status for iOS and Android devices. The so-called Ice age is an initiative which will disable mining with graphics cards in the Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mode with the intention of using a more economical approach with a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus. Ethereum creator, Vitalik Buterin, announcedat Devcon that he had been quietly working on a new comprehensive plan fot the blockchain network, calling it a modest proposal which is aimed at the projects technical development. During the Ethereums flagship conference, the hacker proposed sharding along with other technical changes to Ethereum. He admitted that the expansion of the project would have some impact on storage costs and highlighted the need for solutions that would help mitigate such costs. Scalability is probably problem number one [] Theres a graveyard of systems that claim to solve the scalability problem but dont. Its a very significant and hard challenge. These are just known facts, Buterin said. He also suggested a solution which is likely to solve the problem. It involves partitioning data into subsets so that each node can store only a certain, small component of the network. The underlying mechanism would ensure the accountability of the system and, if required, nodes could rely on other nodes for data. However, this also raises the issue that nodes should send correct information to other nodes. When speaking about these issues, the Ethereum founder proposed a new sharding infrastructure whichwould solve the problems with both scalability and governance. Buterin also said that one of the best options will be to split Ethereum into types of shards the main shard comprising of the current Ethereum network, and other shards or universes. The Metropolis (Ethereum 3.0) hardfork upgrade is scheduled for late September. It will be the first upgrade since Homestead (Ethereum 2.0) from early 2016. Jameson started the presentation by going over the history of Ethereum, beginning with the formal announcement made by Ethereum brainchild, Vitalik Buterin, at the North American Bitcoin Conference in January 2015. Following this public announcement, the Ethereum blockchain went through two phases: The initial release of the Ethereum network that went live in July 2015. Part of a larger, multi-component upgrade called Metropolis , the so-called"Byzantium" code will be enforced at block 4,370,000 or in about four days according to current metrics as a hard fork . A common (yet controversial ) strategy for upgrading blockchains, this means the changes are required to be accepted broadly by all stakeholders on the ethereum blockchain. In this light, however, it's notable that the use of this mechanism in the past has had mixed results for ethereum. To date, the platform has conducted four hard forks , with only one resulting in the creation of an alternative blockchain, ethereum classic . Most significant, perhaps, was the unveiling of the roadmap for Ethereum 2.0 by Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum. Below is a short takeaway from his talk, followed by a short introduction to COBINHOOD (in case you dont know who we are yet ). During Vitaliks talk, who was the final speaker during the event, he started off by sharing the most significant problems Ethereum needs to solve and how these issues can be addressed with the introduction of Ethereum 2.0. He began by noting that Ethereum will be evolving over time, and 2.0 will lay the groundwork for what the protocol will look like in the future. In essence, Ethereum 2.0 will advance the core model of the protocol through sharding, which, to paraphrase his words, sharding is like creating a blockchain with a hundred different universes with different account spaces in each universe. But these universes are not just separate blockchains, according to Vitalik, they are systems that are interconnected with one another, which also share consensus. "It seems like part one of phase one is getting something like being already done," Vitalik Buterin said in a developer meeting. The technology, known as sharding,attempts to split the ethereum blockchain's data into more manageable parts. Pointing to an initial spec posted on Github, Buterin said: "It's theoretically a good spec of what minimal sharding is going to look like." Ethereum is under pressure to keep up with the rising popularity of the platform, which has led to slower transaction times and high processing fees. The congestion has already led some token-based projects to build atop other blockchains such as Stellar . Buterin went to state that the next phase of the four-stage scaling proposal will be completed in "a month and a bit," adding that development work will likely circulate on stateless clients, a type of ethereum software that does not need to process the complete history of the platform. What he called a "modest proposal," is perhaps better described as a three-to-four-year roadmap for ethereum's technical development. Notably at the heart of the vision is a long-in-the-making technical change to ethereum called "sharding," and while always expected to be included in the protocol's plans, today Buterin proposed what might be his most solidified strategy for the technique to date.
