Ledger Nano S Review: Can This $65 Device Top Trezor? Bitcoin.com had the chance to review the new Ledger Nano S multi-cryptocurrency hardware wallet. The Nano S is one of the first hardware wallets that is both compatible with Bitcoin and Ethereum. Also read: Open Bitcoin Privacy Projects Top 5 Wallets of 2016 Ledger has done fairly well for themselves by improving their product line, and the latest release of the Nano S is no different. Older hardware wallets such as the original Ledger, in my opinion, were not as user-friendly like its competitor Trezor . However, after reviewing the Nano S with my seven-year-old son, Joshua, who loves cryptocurrency, we both found the latest offering very easy to use. My Ledger Nano S came in the mail from France and was securely sealed with a tamper-evident tape and plastic wrap encasing the package. After carefully opening the box, which looks similar to the way an Apple product is packaged, my son and I were pleased withhow nice the device looked. The Nano S is small and encased by a damage proofing aluminium cover and has only two physical buttons. It also has an insert for a micro USB connection with a much longer cord than the Trezor. The Nano S requires the use of Google Chrome extensions when connecting the device to any computer. Before connecting the Ledger , a user can set a 4-digit pin on the instrument itself, which eliminates any key logging. Additionally, we wrote down the24-word mnemonic phrase on apaper providedby the device. This was a good lesson for my son as I did not do the seed step with him when we first played with our Trezor last year . He learned all about what a mnemonic phrase was and also helped him with the pronunciation of each word. After completing all 24 words, the machine then asked about three o Continue reading >>

Chinas Google jumps on the blockchain-based game bandwagon with digital pooches Chinas Google jumps on the blockchain-based game bandwagon with digital pooches Baidu, known as Chinas Google, has become the latest Chinese tech company to jump on the blockchain-enabled digital pet bandwagon. The Beijing-based operator of Chinas largest online search engine unveiled a service where users can adopt, raise and trade digital pet dogs. The service, set to be unveiled ahead of the Year of Dog in China, is Baidus latest move in exploring the application of blockchain technology. In January, the company launched a blockchain platform to perform and trace transactions in applications such as insurance management and financial auditing. Dubbed Laici Gou in Chinese, which has a similar pronunciation to Lets Go, the website for the new blockchain-enabled game lists different kinds of digital puppies with different designs and price-levels, each one ranked by their scarcity. Baidu said in a statement that its digital dog product is currently under internal test. The company also reportedly has plans for a CryptoKitties-style game for China. Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum have jumped in value, boosting the popularity of products built by blockchain, the digital ledger technology underpinning all virtual currencies. Canadian start-up Axiom Zen claimed to have launched the worlds first blockchain-based game, CryptoKitties, last November, where users could breed and trade digital kittens using Ethereum-based smart contracts. The bitcoin party is over. The blockchain party has only just begun Registered Baidu users will be able to adopt their first digital dog for free and receive 1,000 complimentary points for use on the Baidu marketplace, which can be used to trade pets w Continue reading >>

The Uncanny Mind That Built Ethereum

The Uncanny Mind That Built Ethereum

Vitalik Buterin invented the worlds hottest new cryptocurrency and inspired a movement before hed turned 20. I met Vitalik Buterin for the first time in Miami, during a Bitcoin conference in 2014. I had been invited by a Bitcoiner I knew in New York to stay at a beach house with a team of developers who were working on the next big thing, a technology called Ethereum. I was told it would blow Bitcoin out of the water. Buterin and about a dozen programmers were sharing the house, using it as a headquarters for crafting their ideas. But it had become an after-hours grease trap for other conference-goers as well. This was during Bitcoins brief Wolf of Wall Street phase when the price was up around $800. Three months earlierwhen the price was even higherthe U.S. Senate had held hearings to confront some of the regulatory anxieties borne from the cryptocurrency scene. The proceedings had gone bizarrely well. And so, early adopters had arrived in Miami flush with cash and high on a spate of good news. I remember waking up the first morning of the conference. I had fallen asleep the night before while most everyone was still awake, bedding down with a couch pillow in some back hallway of the house, earplugs in, hoodie cinched. When I walked into the living room I found it empty of people, but blinking and whirring with technology. Extension cords snaked across the floor, looping around empty beer bottles and the legs of a whiteboard that was tagged with equations and diagrams. I tried and failed to find an outlet for my phone. Buterin was the only person awake. He was sitting outside in a deck chair, working intensely. I didnt bother him, and he didnt say hello. But, I remember the impression he made on me at the time. This skeletal, 19-year-old boy, who was all limbs and joi Continue reading >>

Chinese Search Giant Baidu Just Launched Its Own CryptoKitties Feb 5, 2018 at 03:05 UTC|UpdatedFeb 5, 2018 at 21:18 UTC Baidu, China's search engine giant, has launched a new CryptoKitties-like service as part of its wider work with blockchain. Dubbed " Leci Gou " (in a similar pronunciation to "Let's Go"), the service centers around the digital adoption and trade of puppies, the transactions for which are recorded on a blockchain. That said, it's unclear at this time whether Baidu is using a public network or its own internal one for this purpose. The website lists various digital puppies with different designs and prices, with each ranked by their scarcity.Users with Baidu accounts are able to adopt one crypto-dog and receive 1000 points for free on the marketplace, which can be further used to trade with other "owners." The new initiative from Baidu - considered China's Google - is akin to CryptoKitties , the ethereum-based digital pet initiative that went viral late last year and ultimately led to a deluge of transactions on that public network amid swelling interest. It also sparked a range of copycat projects hoping to piggyback on the CryptoKitties craze. The website details that the service was developed by Baidu's in-house blockchain team, which is also a member of the Linux Foundation-led Hyperledger consortium. According to Chinese media outlets iFeng.com and Leiphone , Baidu said the project is available for public use but is still being tested and further developed. The search giant framed the work as its latest foray into the application of blockchain - as reported previously, the company has also revealed its own blockchain-as-a-service platform. The leader in blockchain news, CoinDesk is a media outlet that strives for the highest journalistic standards Continue reading >>

Can Ethereum Overcome Its Immense Technical Problems? [podcast]

Can Ethereum Overcome Its Immense Technical Problems? [Podcast] Ethereum is an "unstoppable computational machine" that puts "a lot more power and sovereignty in the individual." That's how ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin described this decentralized global computing network in an interview with Reason last year. Centralized institutions, Lubin says, will gradually be replaced by scattered computing nodes, leaving regulators no "corporation that [they] can step on, take information from, or cause to act in a certain way." Ethereum will become as well-known as the internet itself, "impact[ing] all aspects of our existence." It's a seductive pitch. "Ether"the digital currency that powers the ethereum networkhas increased in value about 3,000 percent so far in 2017 and it's starting to attract the same mainstream attention as bitcoin. Last month, a company built on the ethereum platform raised the equivalent of $153 million in three hours. Now that ethereum has a market cap of more than $18 billion , the network is facing immense technical challenges. Can it scale to serve millions of users? To discuss, we spoke with Michael Freedman, a professor of computer science at Princeton who, starting in the late '90s, worked on an earlier wave of peer-to-peer computing technologies. In 2011, Freedman co-authored a paper about a technique called "sharding" that ethereum developers are currently working to integrate into their network. Today, he's the co-founder and chief technology officer of the database company TimeScale . He's also serves an advisor to the decentralized computing platform Blockstack , which we discuss in the interview and was the subject of a recent Reason video . Mt. Gox - Wikipedia

Mt. Gox was a bitcoin exchange based in Shibuya , Tokyo , Japan. [1] Launched in July 2010, by 2013 and into 2014 it was handling over 70% of all bitcoin transactions worldwide, as the largest bitcoin intermediary and the world's leading bitcoin exchange. [2] [3] [4] [5] In February 2014, Mt. Gox suspended trading, closed its website and exchange service, and filed for bankruptcy protection from creditors. [6] [7] In April 2014, the company began liquidation proceedings. [8] Mt. Gox announced that approximately 850,000 bitcoins belonging to customers and the company were missing and likely stolen, an amount valued at more than $450 million at the time. [9] [10] Although 200,000 bitcoins have since been "found", the reason(s) for the disappearancetheft, fraud, mismanagement, or a combination of thesewere initially unclear. New evidence presented in April 2015 by Tokyo security company WizSec led them to conclude that "most or all of the missing bitcoins were stolen straight out of the Mt. Gox hot wallet over time, beginning in late 2011." [11] [12] In late 2006, programmer Jed McCaleb ( eDonkey2000 , Overnet1, Ripple , Stellar ) thought of building a website for users of the Magic: The Gathering Online fantasy-based card game service, to let them trade "Magic: The Gathering Online" cards like stocks. [13] [14] [4] In January 2007, he purchased the domain name mtgox.com, short for "Magic: The Gathering Online eXchange". [15] [16] [17] [18] Initially in beta release , [19] sometime around late 2007, the service went live for approximately three months before McCaleb moved on to other projects, having decided it was not worth his time. He reused the domain name in 2009 to advertise his card game The Far Wilds. [20] In July 2010, McCaleb read about bitcoin on Slashdot , [21 Continue reading >>

What Is Eos And Is It Worth Investing In?

The cryptocurrency has been called the Ethereum Killer. If youve come here looking for more information about the egg-shaped lip balm featured in Miley Cyrus videos, youre in the wrong place. If youre curious about the cryptocurrency that has been called the Ethereum Killer, weve got you covered. EOS is asoftware platform that will support decentralized applications. But what does that actually mean? And where does cryptocurrency come in? Well break down everything you need to know before deciding if you should invest in EOS. EOS introduces a blockchain technology that will easily allow developers to create decentralized applications, or dApps. Other blockchains, like Ethereum , support dApps, but EOS was designed with app developers in mind. Just like browser or phone apps, a dApp can be anything: an alarm clock, a way for artists to fund projects, a social network, a game, or an AR version of Google Street View . The first thing to know about EOS is that its not pronounced E-O-S. Thats because its not actually an acronym. According to the website: EOS means different things to different people. We have received numerous amazing interpretations of what EOS stands for or what it should stand for so we have decided not to formally define it ourselves. Some of these names include Ethereum On Steroids, End of Silence, and Endless Online Scaling. The industry standard pronunciation of the platform is Ee-oss. The second thing you need to know about EOS is that it was created by software developer Dan Larimer , who has been called a visionary programmer due to his diverse realm of cryptocurrency projects in the works. Larimer, a former programmer for unmanned military defense projects, started Bitshares in 2013. Bitshares was one of the first community-managed crypto exchang Continue reading >>

How can I export Ethereum blockchain data into csv? I would like to download the Ethereum blockchain and use the data for machine learning purposes. For this, I have to get the data into a workable format like csv or a flat JSON etc. I've read about approaches and the most common one seems to be through a monkeyDB. Do you know a source code that implements this method? Or do you know other methods that could be used to get the Ethereum blockchain data into a modeling friendly format? Here is a simple scraper . You can run it with: scrapy runspider ethscraper/spiders/eth_json_rpc_spider.py \-s ETH_JSON_RPC_URL=\-s START_BLOCK=0 \-s END_BLOCK=1000000 \-s FEED_FORMAT=csv It will output data to blocks.csv, transactions.csv, erc20_transfers.csv. Googles Tacotron 2 Simplifies The Process Of Teaching An Ai To Speak

Googles Tacotron 2 Simplifies The Process Of Teaching An Ai To Speak

Creating convincing artificial speech is a hot pursuit right now, with Google arguably in the lead. The company may have leapt ahead again with the announcement today of Tacotron 2, a new method for training a neural network to produce realistic speech from text that requires almost no grammatical expertise. The new technique takes the best pieces of two of Googles previous speech generation projects: WaveNet and the original Tacotron. WaveNet produced what I called eerily convincing speech one audio sample at a time, which probably sounds like overkill to anyone who knows anything about sound design. But while it is effective, WaveNet requires a great deal of metadata about language to start out: pronunciation, known linguistic features, etc. Tacotron synthesized more high-level features, such as intonation and prosody, but wasnt really suited for producing a final speech product. Tacotron 2 uses pieces of both, though I will frankly admit that at this point we have reached the limits of my technical expertise, such as it is. But from what I can tell, it uses text and narration of that text to calculate all the linguistic rules that systems normally have to be explicitly told. The text itself is converted into a Tacotron-style mel-scale spectrogram for purposes of rhythm and emphasis, while the words themselves are generated using a WaveNet-style system. The resulting audio, several examples of which you can listen to here , is pretty much as good as or better than anything out there. The rhythm of speech is convincing, though perhaps a bit too chipper. It mainly stumbles on words with pronunciations that arent particularly intuitive, perhaps due to their origin outside American English, such as decorum, where it emphasizes the first syllable, and Merlot, which it hil Continue reading >>

Blockchain - Run Solidity/deploy Ethereum Smart Contract On A Website - Stack Overflow

Run solidity/deploy ethereum smart contract on a website Does anyone know if I can deploy my own smart contract or run/host a solidity code via my own website? I am following this Youtube tutorial by Decypher Media . If I'm correct, the testrpc address localhost:8545 means that I am deploying the contract as being part of a private blockchain that is only local to my pc, right? This is the case for development. So if I would want to actually deploy the contract as an actual Ethereum node or to the Ethereum blockchain itself, would I just have to replace the localhost:8545 with the actual URL? I am not totally familiar with this yet, but I am really trying to develop something on Ethereum. I am looking at creating a contract that sends a token to a dynamic number of eth addresses (i.e. today I may have to send tokens to 10 eth addresses, tomorrow I may do it for 15). So, instead of firing the contract for each token which would be time-consuming, I would like to do it automatically/seamlessly. But I want to be able to run my solidity code and handle the contract through my own website instead of running it on the ethereum wallet application or somewhere else. Anyone, please share some ideas on how we can achieve this, or maybe a summary/outline of the steps that we would need to take to achieve it. Any help would be great! Thanks! Continue reading >>

8 New Google Assistant Features That Make It Much More Powerful

8 new Google Assistant features that make it much more powerful The Google Assistant was the star of Google I/O for the second year in a row. Now that the technology has been available for well over a year, Google is adding numerous features that will expand the AIs reach in Googlesquest to dominate your home. In other words, expect to be talking to your phone a lot more in the coming years. Getting voice answers Google Home or your phone is fine and all, but sometimes it helps to have a visual aid. Google is leveraging Chromecast to do just that. Now if you ask the Assistant something like whats the weather or whats on my calendar, it can display answers right on your TV. Having information displayed on a screen is allows the Assistant to provide a bit more information and context, such as extended forecasts or future appointments at a glance. And considering Id imagine most people who own Google Home also have a Cast-enabled display, this should be easy to set up. Google Homes biggest weakness against the Echo (or the Assistant vs Alexa) has always been its lack of third party support. Alexas Skills SDK allowed developers to integrate Amazons assistant into a variety of hardware. Then Google announced the Assistant is getting its own SDK , and the playing field became a lot more level. Deeplocalbuilt a drink mixer with the SDK Apps can now integrate the Assistant into their own experiences, and hardware can leverage the Assistants intelligence for hands-free controls and tighter integration with your smartphone and Google services. Expect more devices and apps to show up with support with the Assistant in the nearish future.
