Last updated on February 26th, 2018 at 04:04 pm Ethereum (ETH) is a popular choice for graphics card (GPU) miners. In 2018, Ethereum smashed its long-term $400 ceiling, and reached more than $1,000. Ethereums Ethash algorithm is one of many algorithms designed for optimal mining on GPUs. Generally speaking, a GPU is good for mining all GPU-mineable cryptocurrency (including Ethereum Classic , Monero , Zcash , and Vertcoin). This situation gives GPU miners enviable flexibility, in order to be able to switch between over 40 coins that are based on their current profitability. If youre new to mining Ethereum , there are 4 important things you should know: Ethereum intends to switch to a Proof of Stake scheme called Casper. Although this switch has been delayed, its reasonable to expect that it will occur in late 2018. Ethereum mining will no longer be possible after that, unless a hybrid Proof of Work/Proof of Stake model is implemented. If so, rewards to miners will be significantly reduced, with perhaps half of all new coin rewards going to holders instead. Ethereum mining currently requires a GPU with at least 3 gigabytes of Video RAM (VRAM). This VRAM requirement is expected to grow to 4 gigs in 2018. The Ethereum Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) file is stored in VRAM by miners. The DAG grows in size by remaining proportionate to the mining difficulty. About once every epoch (or 30,000 Ethereum blocks), a new DAG is generated, which must be downloaded in order to continue mining. Now after Windows is setup properly, download a tool called DDU ,That tool will uninstall your current driver and block Windows from automatically installing GPU drivers. Thats important so that Windows does not install an outdated driver! It will ask you to run in safe mode but that is not necessary. When you run the program just click on Clean and restart. Block Windows Automatic Driver Installation Now turn off your PC and connect onlyONEGPU. We want to have the latest NVIDIA Drivers installed, so go to NVIDIA driver website , and download the latest version for your GPUs. Alright... now that we have the links, let's get started! Create a folder somewhere that's easily remembered and name it "Eth" Download all the latest versions of the files above to your "Eth" folder. Rename the Geth download to "Geth". Rename Ethminer to "miner" and rename the Ethereum wallet to "wallet". By now, everything should look like 'cd' from your command prompt to your "Eth" folder -- for myself, I typed in command prompt 'cd C:\Eth' . This will be different for you depending on where you have downloaded the files. After changing directories to Eth, type 'geth account new' into your cmd. Enter a password to encrypt your wallet when prompted. Navigate to your wallet folder, and open up the file "Ethereum-Wallet.exe" on your computer. Wait for Ethereum to sync. Go get some tea or something. (WARNING: The whole Ethereum blockchain has to sync, which is about a 30GB download. So most definitely get some tea while you're waiting). People are reporting a couple of megahashes increase in the performance of GTX 1060 GPUs over what they are getting with the same settings from Claymores ETH miner, some slight, but less performance improvement is observed in GTX 1070. Unfortunately it seems that the performance optimizations submitted by David Li dont do much good for GDDR5X GPUs like the GTX 1080 and GTX 1080 Ti. Feel free to test it on your Nvidia mining GPUS and report what and if there is some improvement in the hashrate over your previous settings.
