Build Your Own Ethereum Mining Rig, Part 3: Windows Setup

April 11, 2017 CryptoBadger 272 Comments No doubt some of you saw the Ethereum mining guide for Linux that I published last week and balked at all of that command-line nonsense.Linux isnt everyones thing, and thats okif Windows is your OS of choice, then this guide is for you! While Linux offers some significantadvantages when it comes to GPU mining, Windows does have onepotentially important edge: undervolting your GPUs currently requires quite a bit less effort underWindows. If you want your mining rig to run at its maximum efficiency, youll want tokeep power consumption to a minimum, and with Linux that generally requires flashing a custom BIOS to each GPUwhereas in Windows you can usually accomplish this at the driver level with a simple software setting. The bad news is that if you want maximum performance out of your rig, youll probably eventually want to flash your GPU BIOS under either operating system, but well get into that in part 4 of this guide. But if you already know that overwriting your GPU BIOS with a custom replacement is outside of your comfort zone, then sticking with Windows will at least allow you to undervolt. So with all of that in mind, if Windows sounds like the best optionfor you, read on for our setup guide! Build an EthereumMining Rig, part 3: Windows Setup I wont go into quite the same excruciating levelof detail as I did with my Linux guide , as its probably a safe assumption that anyone reading a guide about building a custom cryptocurrency mining rig is already quite comfortable with basic Windows tasks. The steps outlined below should be more than adequate for the average Windows user, but feel free to leave comments if anything is unclear! Before we even get to Windows, make sure your mining computers BIOS settings are in order. Powe Continue reading >>

Ethereum Mining 101: Your Complete Guide

The world has gone digital, from the development of smart homes to the development of innovations that promote seamless transactions. Every industry is feeling the impact of technology now more than ever. In every part of the world, the technologically driven goals remain the same: the maximization of profit and the promotion of sustainable development in all spheres of life. It is this yearning to make life as easy as possible that brought about the birth of cryptocurrency . Ethereum seeks to make these aspirations come true. The platform boasts of several applications that help users carry out everyday tasks in a simple fashion. What is Mining, Ethereum Mining and Where Does Ether Come From? Mining is a computationally intensive work that requires a lot of processing power and time. Mining is the act of participating in a given peer distributed cryptocurrency network in consensus. The miner is subsequently rewarded for providing solutions to challenging math problems. It is done by putting the computer's hardware to use with mining applications. All the information on cryptocurrency transactions must be embedded in data blocks. Each block is linked internally to several other blocks. This creates the blockchain . These blocks must be analyzed as fast as possible to ensure a smooth running of transactions on the platform. However, the issuers of such currencies do not have the processing capabilities to handle this alone. It is where miners come in. A miner is an investor that devotes time, computer space and energy to sorting through blocks. When the mining process hits the right harsh, they will submit their solutions to the issuer. After verification, the issuer of the currency offers rewards which are portions of the transactions they helped in verifying. They als Continue reading >>

Radeon R9 290x 28 MH/s using 280 watts As I mentioned above, you can choose to build your mining rig with a nice custom built case or you can save money and use a plastic storage crate or milk crate . Both work equally as well except one wont look nearly as good. But if you want something cool and professional looking, you can buy mining cases such as this one . The standard power supply in a desktop computer can be anywhere from 300W-500W. But when your mining and you are powering up to 6/7 GPUs, you want to make sure you have enough power. 1200W+ is what youre looking for and you want to make sure that it is Gold or better certified for efficiency. Also, modular power supplies allow you toconfigure your cables individually which helps greatly when building out your rig. Single 4GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM is all you need. Nothing more. In order to mount the GPUs within the crate or case, youll need riser PCI cables to extend the PCI-e connection from the motherboard. Get as many PCI Express 1X to 16X Powered RiserCables as you can to match up with the number of GPUs you have. There are many different variants, like this one or this or this . Get a basic 60GB SSD or 120GB SSD drive for installing the OS and running your mining software. Youll need a basic Monitor and Mouse/ Keyboard combo to configure all the software and mining settings. Also, dont forget about a Kill A Watt usage monitor. Youll need at least one box fan per rig to make sure the GPUs do not overheat. If youre into Linux, Eth OS is a 64-bit Linux OS that mines Ethereum, Zcash, Monero, and other GPU-minable coins. If youre a windows guy, here is Windows 10 . If youre going to be using Windows, youll need mining software. Take a look at this Ethereum Mining on a Windows PC guide. Build an Ethereum Mining RigSte Continue reading >>

7 Best Ethereum Mining Hardware Asics & Gpus 2017 / 2018 (comparison)

Jordan Tuwiner Last updated July 13, 2017 Using an efficient Ethereum mining hardware will significantly reduce your electricity bills and cut down your costs. This article will help you learn more about the best Ethereum mining hardware. Note: Before you get hardware make sure you have Ethereum mining software, an Ether mining pool , and an Ethereum hardware wallet like the Ledger Nano S for secure storage of Ether. If you just want Ether then just buy Ethereum . Mining has a lot of setup costs and some technical knowledge is required. In order to mine Ethereum, you will need specialized hardware known as graphics processing unit (GPU). Ethereums developers originally intended for it to be mined on computer CPUs but miners later discovered that GPUs gave them more hashing power. So, in the most simplest of terms: a GPU is a specialized Ethereum mining computer. Some GPUs have a higher hash rate than others, while some use more electric power as well. In choosing the most efficient GPU the most important thing is striking a balance between how powerful you want your rig to be and how much you are willing to spend on the GPU itself and the electricity. Many of these costs will vary by country. Is it cheap to buy GPUs in your country? Since most GPUs are sold on Amazon and eBay, if you live in a country where those retailers ship to then you will likely have an easier time getting the GPUs. Also, what is the cost of electricity in your country? Electricity costs are the deciding factor for most miners. As we have seen with Bitcoin mining , miners in China, Iceland, and other places with cheap electricity have a huge advantage! Now that you understand the factors that make GPU rigs good, here is a list and brief description of the most efficient GPUs on sale. Note that th Continue reading >>

Ethereum Mining Guide - Part 1: The Basics & Set Up

Ethereum Mining Guide - Part 1: The Basics & Set Up Ethereum is the next big thing, and you really need to know about it. This is going to be the hardest thing to explain, so instead of explaining it to you and trying to water it down - because I barely understand it, I'm going to be honest. I'm about 50 hours into this, 10 hours per day for 4 days straight and I'm utterly addicted to Ethereum and everything to do with it. This series of articles are going to be a journal of sorts, so you'll be here right with me - and I want as much community feedback as possible. If I'm referring to something wrong, terminology or hardware or anything at all - please let me know, and I'll edit these articles as we go. This is one of the best explanations on just what the hell Ethereum is, and that it could be the future. Cryptocurrency mining power comes down to the GPU of choice, and how many of them you have. I'm in the first week of my Ethereum mining adventures and I'm using 22 x GPUs across 9 systems, which is horribly inefficient - but it gives me a good base to start from and work up from there. But with more GPU power cranking along at 100% all day every day, we run into two big problems: power and cooling. For systems with 3-4 x GPUs, you're going to need a specific motherboard with enough space between PCIe x16 slots, or dual-GPU graphics cards like the AMD Radeon R9 295X2, which I happen to have two of. Except, the R9 295X2 will use 500W+ each without a problem, so two of them are beyond hardcore on your PC with heat and power consumption. If you're using 2 x GPUs and will only use 2 x GPUs with your Ethereum mining, then an 850W should be fine. It'll give you some good headroom in case you upgrade your graphics card, but not add another one in. If you're using a 3 x GPU r Continue reading >>

It Is No Longer Worth It To Build An Ethereum Mining Rig

It Is No Longer Worth It To Build An Ethereum Mining Rig Building an Ethereum mining rig hasnt been worth it for months, and soon they will be completely obsolete. Goodnight, sweet prince. Image: Daniel Oberhaus/Motherboard Back in May I wrote a guide explaining how to build an Ethereum mining rig , a special type of computer that forms the backbone of the Ethereum network and earns ether, the digital currency native to the network, for its owner. Shortly thereafter, Motherboard also made a video documenting this process . Since then, Ive received countless emails from readers inquiring about my mining rig. Ive received three such emails this week. The most common question voiced by these readers is whether or not it is still worth it to build a mining rig. The answer to this question is no. Building an Ethereum mining rig hasnt been worth it for months and a few months from now, mining ether will be completely obsolete. Read More: An Idiot's Guide to Building an Ethereum Mining Rig Arguably, building an Ethereum mining rig wasnt even worth it when I built my machine in May, and many readers let me know this when the article and video first came out. This is somewhat true, but there is a necessary caveat here. Mining ether also wasnt worth it for about the first year and a half of the cryptocurrencys existence. The price of ether hovered around $10 from 2015 until early 2017, when it saw a spike to $25. This was important because it meant the value of the ether being mined was higher than the cost of the electricity that was needed to mine it. In other words, until that point small scale mines were operating at a loss in the belief that the tokens they were mining would someday be worth a lot more money. In hindsight, these early miners were rightthe price of ether has Continue reading >>

How To Mine Ethereum: Complete Beginners Guide

How To Mine Ethereum: Complete Beginners Guide

First you need a computer, or graphics card, that is capable of computing an algorithm that it attempts to solve in order to generate some Ether. For Ethereum, the block that your video cards are attempting to find generates on average every 15 seconds. That means every 15 seconds, the Ethereum network pays to whomever found the block, 5 Ethereum (this value may change over time). It should be noted that at some point in the future, Ethereum will be switching over to proof of stake with their Casper Fork which will mean it can no longer be mined. There are currently many options for Ethereum Miners depending on the type of Video Card, the amount of video cards you want on one motherboard, and the power requirements. 6x Video Cards (Minimum 3GB, 4GB recommended) Best Hash/Price Recommendation: Radeon RX 570 4GB Ethernet cable (do not run wifi), power button for motherboard, fans for cooling With this setup, youd find on average around 0.5Eth per month. This will change depending on the Ethereum Mining Difficulty, you can use the website WhatToMine to make calculations of your earnings or find other profitable coins to mine. It is important to consider the difficulty to measure whether to continue mining Ethereum, or whether to switch to another algorithm or coin to mine. Unfortunately, for someone looking at building just a few mining rigs, they may never find a block solo-mining. Therefore it is necessary to join a mining pool. A mining pool combines the hashrate of all the miners, and vastly increases the chances that the group is able to find a block. This therefore allows you to get a steady payout from the pool, even if you yourself never find a block. There are some choices for Ethereum mining pools which vary depending on how their overall hashrate, the fee struc Continue reading >>

How To Build An Ethereum Mining Rig

How To Build An Ethereum Mining Rig

This guide is going to show you how to build an Ethereum Mining rig yourself which has two main steps - choosing and sourcing your equipment and then putting it together! Depending on times its probably going to take you a week or so to get all the pieces and then another half a day fiddling with configurations etc. Its the same as building your own computer normally but with a few extra considerations that mainly involve which GPU's you pick. If you don't want to buy mining equipment,You can also try buying a cloud mining contract with Hashflare or Genesis Mining . Your going to have to get hold of a fair few components and the costs stack up quite quickly: 1)A MotherBoard - A motherboard is the brain of the computer and is what you build everything onto - the base of your mining rig. The main feature you are looking for in a motherboard is the number of GPU slots it has as this will determine how many graphics cards or GPU's it can fit - and in the end your total hashing power. 3 PCI Express slots will mean you can fit 3 x Radeon HD 7950 with a hashrate of 20 MH/s each - or a total hashing power of 60 MH/s. A PCI Express slot is a connection port on the motherboard and looks like the picture below - they are often coloured white but can be beige - you can get other types of slots but most GPU's work on a PCI express. We used the GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 which you can get here ! 2)Graphics Card - Pick your GPUs! Some graphics cards cost a fortune but don't hash much whilst some are more reasonable but use more power. Ultimately its a balance between how powerful you want your rig to be and how much you want to spend - but a word to the wise - make sure you pick an efficient GPU. You can buy second hand GPU's from reputable providers such as GPU Shack - be careful though when Continue reading >>

How to Mine Ether and use Ethereum on Windows? Which programs should be installed and what do you need to do to start mining Ether and use Ethereum? The first thing you need to do is go to this link download Geth . (The latest version is always available as Geth-Win64-latest.zip) Geth is the program that communicates with the Ethereum Network and acts as the a relay between your computer, its hardware and the rest of the ethereum network computers so if a block is mined by another computer your Geth program will pick it up and then pass on the new information onto your GPU or CPU for mining. You need to unzip the GETH file and move it to a location on your hard drive. (Right click on the zipped file and select unpack.) In this case we'll move it to the hard drive, usually (C:) - which will make the next step easier. All you need to do is copy the file you have downloaded and unzipped and move it to the hard drive folder. Now you need to run the program you just downloaded. How To Mine Ethereum

Register for the ICOs and Regulation Webinar on March 22nd at 11AM EST Now that you know " How Ethereum Mining Works ", you may want to know how to compete in the race to mine ether yourself. To recap, mining is the glue that holds ethereum's 'decentralized app store' together by ensuring that it comes to consensus on each change to any of the applications (dapps) running on the network. Take the online notebook described in " What is Ethereum? ". The network would not come to consensus about the 'state' of the notebook (say, if a note is added or deleted) without the computational power to process the changes. Miners set computers loose to solve cryptographic puzzles in an attempt to win ether, and they need to try a huge number of computational problems until one unlocks a new batch of the asset. One of the interesting things about open blockchains is that, in theory, anyone can set their computers to focus on these cryptographic puzzles as a way to win rewards. The catch is that mining on major public blockchains tends to require more and more power over time, as more people invest inmore powerful hardware. In this day and age, those mining with low-powered setups are unlikely to win, but it's still a viable past-time for hobbyists and enthusiasts alike. Before getting started, you will need special computer hardware to dedicate full-time to mining. There are two types of mining hardware: CPUs and GPUs. GPUs boast a higher hash rate, meaning they can guess puzzle answers more quickly. At time of writing, GPUs are now the only option for ether miners. Settling on a GPU is a complextask and you can browse plenty of advice about which ones are the most profitable based on hash rate performance, power consumption and the initial expense of the card. You probably want to Continue reading >>

Easiest Guide To Mining Ethereum (eth) - Windows - Amd/nvidia

Alright... now that we have the links, let's get started! Create a folder somewhere that's easily remembered and name it "Eth" Download all the latest versions of the files above to your "Eth" folder. Rename the Geth download to "Geth". Rename Ethminer to "miner" and rename the Ethereum wallet to "wallet". By now, everything should look like 'cd' from your command prompt to your "Eth" folder -- for myself, I typed in command prompt 'cd C:\Eth' . This will be different for you depending on where you have downloaded the files. After changing directories to Eth, type 'geth account new' into your cmd. Enter a password to encrypt your wallet when prompted. Navigate to your wallet folder, and open up the file "Ethereum-Wallet.exe" on your computer. Wait for Ethereum to sync. Go get some tea or something. (WARNING: The whole Ethereum blockchain has to sync, which is about a 30GB download. So most definitely get some tea while you're waiting). The download of the blockchain will, like I've said, take a little while. However, you now have an Ethereum address that is available for use. Copy it from your Ethereum Wallet. In your command prompt, type "cd C:\Eth\miner", or wherever your miner is saved to. Use the following syntax, and enter this into the command prompt: ethminer -U -F (NVIDIA) ethminer -G -F (AMD) I hope this guide was easy enough for everyone to follow. Now, anyone has the ability to figure out how to mine Ethereum. While it might seem complicated at first, with a guide like this, no way will you be steered in the wrong direction! So, what are you doing? Try these 10 simple steps out, and start mining some Ethereum! Enjoy! Reply here for any questions. I'll be more than happy to help.
