Rc Intern Talk: Hacking On The Ethereum Blockchain At Redcarpet - By Shubham Chaudhary

RC INTERN TALK: Hacking on the Ethereum Blockchain at RedCarpet - By Shubham Chaudhary A conversation with our outgoing intern Shubham Chaudhary sharing his stories and achievements from his term at RedCarpet. RC: Tell us about yourself and your goals in life. Shubham: I am Shubham Chaudhary, a 4th-year undergrad student at IIT Roorkee majoring in Geological Technology (its a fancy word for Geology and its not related in any way to what I worked at RedCarpet). I like to code in my free time, I try to work on some project (paid or otherwise) all the time. I learnt to code in my free time in college which is present in ample. I havent planned much about my life yet. I am sure that Ill be working in IT industry and blockchain technology but as a coder or a data scientist, those questions are yet to be answered. RC: How did you come to know about RedCarpet and what made you intern here? Shubham: I received a LinkedIn InMail from Sandeep one day asking me if I was interested in an intern opportunity. I googled RedCarpet, it was YC startup. I went through their blogs on interns. Sandeep asked me about my previous projects. I had worked with Golang and Ethereum previously so it was a perfect match for this internship. I joined immediately. RC: What kind of projects did you get to work on here? Was it the kind of work that you wanted to do? Shubham: I worked on integrating PostgreSQL database to Ethereum core. I did not know that Ill be working on this type of project. I wasnt aware that itd be an open source. I thought it would be about writing smart-contracts. It was better than I expected. I worked with Ethereums core which was interesting and exciting at the same time. RC: What would you say was the most beneficial part of this internship - your most important takeaways? A 101 Noob Intro To Programming Smart Contracts Onethereum

A 101 Noob Intro to Programming Smart Contracts onEthereum Originally published at consensys.github.io/developers (where some of the code formatting might be easier to read). Some people say Ethereum is too logic-heavy and hard to use, but heres a write-up to give you a feel for building smart contracts and applications with it. Tools, wallets, applications and the ecosystem are still in development and itll get easier! Part I is an overview of key terms and discusses Ethereum Clients and Smart Contract Languages. Part II discusses overall workflow and some current DApp Frameworks and Tools and Part III is the Programming Part, a quick walkthrough of writing tests and building a DApp for a smart contract using Truffle. If youre new to all this cryptocurrency stuff, including Bitcoin and how it works, check out the first couple chapters of Andreas Antonopoulos Bitcoin Book to dip your toe in the water. Then head over to the Ethereum Whitepaper . If you start getting into some murky sections and would rather build something to get familiar first, then just read on. You dont have to understand all the crypto economic computer science to start building, and a lot of that paper is about Ethereums improvements over Bitcoins architecture. The official place to start is ethereum.org which has a starter tutorial and follow-up token and crowdsale tutorials. Theres also the official Solidity docs . Another good place to start with smart contracts (where I started) is dappsForBeginners , although it might be outdated. The goal of this write-up is to complement those tutorials and introduce some helpful dev tools that make starting out with Ethereum, smart contracts and building DApps (decentralized apps) easier. And to try to explain the overall flow of whats going on. This is fro Continue reading >>

I Invested All My Spending Money In Ethereum (and So Did My Friends)

I Invested All My Spending Money In Ethereum (and So Did My Friends)

I Invested All My Spending Money in Ethereum (And So Did My Friends) College students in computer science programs are obsessed with cryptocurrency. The excitement was contagious when the price of the ethereum doubled a few weeks ago. I got a flurry of messages from my college friends, and together we watched the price climb. It was good timing for me. I had just put all of my spending money into ethereum. When my friend Arturo first pitched me cryptocurrency a few months ago, the phrase that won me over was, "Money is freedom." I was studying in Spain at the time, and what was an overdue catch up between friends snowballed into a transatlantic business call. In hopes of striking it rich, my friend put all his savings into ethereum and urged me to follow suit. I thought of the $5,000 student loan looming after I graduate. With this in mind, I found my friend's argument particularly compelling, and some pocket money would be nice, I thought. So I went off to do some research. My parents added $900 to my bank account, which was spending money meant to last me the whole semester abroad. Within a week, I had invested $700 of it into ethereum. I knew a bit about bitcoin, but had never even heard of ethereum. I started clicking around and soon found myself deep in an internet spiral. I was obsessed, trying to figure out the ins-and-outs of smart contracts , the various players in the Ethereum Enterprise Alliance , and what the skeptics had to say about it. I had my doubts after reading the arguments on possible security issues and community disunity after the DAO hack . Like any investment, there are risks. But ethereum has demonstrated consistent growth over the last year, growing more than 2,000 percent since February. With success stories of overnight millionaires bulleti Continue reading >>

3 Things You *need* To Know About Ethereum

3 Things You *need* To Know About Ethereum

3 Things You *Need* to Know About Ethereum 3 Things You *Need* to Know About Ethereum While Bitcoin has dominated the clickbait news cycle for months now, the real dark horse of the cryptocurrency space is Ethereum. Here's the three basic things you need to know about it: Most people I encounter think that Ethereum is just another currency, like Bitcoin. Actually, though, the tradable token they're thinking of is called Ether. Ethereum, on the other hand, is like an operating system. To use the computing analogy, think of blockchain technology as the hardware of a laptop. Ethereum is like Windows or MacOS, serving as a more user-friendly application of the core blockchain tech. Unlike Bitcoin, which exists primarily as a means of exchanging value, Ether is used within the Ethereum ecosystem. Developers use Ether to essentially pay for access to the platform, building new blockchain applications running on the Ethereum "operating system". Ether still has value relative to fiat currency, though, and can be invested and traded similarly to Bitcoin. 3) Most Other Coins Are Built On Ethereum When you hear about yet another ICO, chances are it'll be built using Ethereum as the base. Unless the company focuses specifically on new blockchain tech, their token will likely exist thanks to Ethereum. I recently wrote a white paper for medical marijuana company launching a token, for example, that was built on Ethereum. Obviously, these are just the absolute basics of a very complicated system. If you're in the crypto space, what else do you think your fellow monkeys should know? I'm also happy to answer any questions about blockchain/crypto that aren't "Do you think I should invest in it?". Ask away! Continue reading >>

Vacancy Internship/master Project: Atomic Cross-blockchain Transactions | The Hague - Brainport Talentbox

Vacancy Internship/master Project: Atomic Cross-blockchain Transactions | The Hague - Brainport Talentbox

Internship/Master project: Atomic Cross-Blockchain Transactions | The Hague Blockchain technology has become well known for storage and transfer of value (e.g., Bitcoin), unstoppable execution of smart contracts (e.g., Ethereum), and business applications (e.g., Hyperledger). Fundamental aspects of blockchain are validation and confirmation, that is, a blockchain only accepts transaction that are correct and consistent with previously accepted transactions. In the context of bitcoin that means you can only spend coins you are the owner of and any attempt double spending is not accepted. Whereas transaction atomicity is guaranteed within a blockchain, they are not between blockchains. Take the following example of a composite transaction in which Alice and Bob trade bitcoin for ether. * T1: Alice transfers 5 bitcoin to Bob (Bitcoin blockchain) * T2: Bob transfers 100 ether to Alice (Ethereum blockchain) Either both transactions need to succeed, or neither, but not only one of the two. The classic strategy is the invocation of one or more trusted third parties. -Cryptocurrency exchange: both Alice and Bob make deposits with the exchange, which guarantees the atomicity of the trade transaction. -Ripple: both Alice and Bob make deposits with Ripple issuing gateways (cf. "bank") and perform the exchange via the Ripple blockchain. The classic strategy defies one of the main strengths of blockchain technology, namely independence of Trusted Third Parties. Project description The graduate student should make a fundamental analysis of the cross-blockchain-atomicity problem, study existing solutions, and develop new solution directions. Solution directions may include modifications and additions to existing blockchain technologies, introduction of new blockchain technologies, cr Continue reading >>

Ethereum is a decentralized platform that runs smart contracts: applications that run exactly as programmed without any possibility of downtime, censorship, fraud or third party interference. DApps (pronounced Dee-apps) are a new model for building successful and massively scalable applications. Bitcoin led the way with its open-source, peer-to-peer nature, cryptographically-stored records (block chain), and limited number of tokens that power the use of its features. The application must be completely open-source , it must operate autonomously, and with no entity controlling the majority of its tokens. The application may adapt its protocol in response to proposed improvements and market feedback but all changes must be decided by consensus of its users. The application's data and records of operation must be cryptographically stored in a public, decentralized blockchain in order to avoid any central points of failure. The application must use a cryptographic token which is necessary for access to the application and any contribution of value from (miners / farmers) should be rewarded in the applications tokens. The application must generate tokens according to a standard crytptographic algorithm acting as a proof of the value nodes are contributing to the application (Proof of Work or Proof of Stake Algorithms). A decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), fully automated business entity (FAB), or distributed autonomous corporation/company (DAC) is a decentralized network of narrow-AI autonomous agents which perform an output-maximizing production function and which divides its labor into computationally intractable tasks. The Ethereum Foundation Is Looking For A C++ Software Engineer

The Ethereum Foundation Is Looking For A C++ Software Engineer

The Ethereum Foundation is Looking for a C++ Software Engineer There is no more prestigious job in this space than working for the Ethereum Foundation, but as with any such coveted position, it is unlikely you would be performing any ordinary tasks. You might have to speak to us, for example, the media. You might also find yourself awake at 3AM on the day before the biggest ethereum conference, with your task being to emergency fix some bug, perhaps minutes before you take to the stage to present whatever youre working on. And if thats not challenging enough, youll have to be able to not dream away wondering why Vitalik Buterin is fidgeting with grass and instead keep full focus on whatever he is saying at 3,000 miles per hour. But the reward is the potential to have impact in a fast evolving space which some say may bring a fourth industrial revolution. However, that impact could be a bug, so, no pressure. As for the somewhat more objective requirements, theyre the usual. Mastery of maths would probably be quite useful. Ethereum is all open source, so a nice github profile would probably help. More socially, you need an ability to work in pair programming, critiquing, responding to feedback and agreeing to compromises. But really, what you need is a realistic evaluation of whether you are suitable for the position of an ethereum core developer working in a somewhat start-up atmosphere but with somewhat secure funding for at least a decade or two. If you think you are, and that evaluation is realistic, and you want the position, then you probably should give it a try. Its not clear whether EF has an HR department. It is instead far more likely the application will be read by a current ethereum developer. As you might expect they are quite busy, so the first test would Continue reading >>
