What Is Ethereum's Inflation Rate? (how Quickly Will New Ether Be Created)
What is Ethereum's inflation rate? (how quickly will new ether be created) It seems like the answer is still in flux, but it would be nice to have a single answer to this question that we can update over time. To confirm, do you mean inflation of the price/value of Ether (i.e. price-based inflation), or its level of issuance (i.e. monetary inflation)? I'd assume the former, but it's worth clarifying. Richard Horrocks Feb 25 at 23:53 The question is What is Ethereum's inflation rate? , but I'm assuming and answering the question What is the issuance rate of Ether. In 2017 the issuance rate of Ether is 14.75%. Roughly 5 Ethers per block are issued. Because Ethereum rewards Uncles it means that there may be more or less than 5 Ether. Rough Projections Based On 5 Ethers Per Block Joseph Lubin wrote an interesting article that addresses your question: If you consider the issuance model presented above you can see that the rate at which Ethers "inflate" is designed to change regularly and always in the downward direction. For more in depth data please see this chart: In 2017 we are looking at a 14.75% inflation rate. However this is only while the network is using a Proof of Work model, once Proof of Stake kicks in, the inflation rate of change could itself change. The Spanner In the Works - AKA Difficulty Bomb. AKA Ice Age. AKA Casper. AKA Proof of Stake. AKA Developers Making Changes. Ok, so all the above would be nice and helpful to give you a rough idea of how many Ethers there will be at a particular point in time. However there is the Difficulty Bomb which messes the whole thing up. And then there is Ethereum's Proof of Stake model name Casper, which will also affect the issuance of Ether. What Does the Difficulty Bomb Do?It basically makes it harder to make a block, w Continue reading >>
Vitalik's Serious Joke: The Case For Ending Ethereum Inflation
Vitalik's Serious Joke: The Case for Ending Ethereum Inflation Apr 16, 2018 at 12:00 UTC|UpdatedApr 17, 2018 at 04:03 UTC It turns out, Vitalik wasn't exactly joking. Sure, that might be what most people thought when ethereum's creator published a controversial proposal on April Fool's Day, but the post has prompted a very real, very serious conversation about whether the underlying economics of the world's second-largest cryptocurrency should be altered. In fact, in the weeks since the concept was first floated, dialogue has only gotten more heated about the idea that a limit could be placed on the total number of ether, ethereum's cryptocurrency , that could ever be created. And while it's long been a contentious topic (there isn't currently a cap), the rate at which new coins are being introduced into the market has been growing. Buterin appears aware of the concern, citing "economic sustainability" as the reason he wants to stop creating new ether when 120 million are introduced. In fact, he believes limiting the market supply to exactly that figure, twice the number of ether sold in the platform's 2014 ethereum fundraising , could help long term. In a developer meeting last week, Buterin outlined his rationale further, and while his comments were initially greeted with giggles from other core developers, the atmosphere quickly gave way to serious reflection. From a technical standpoint, the change would be easy to implement, and pending sufficient community support, it could be executed with a simple code fix as part of ethereum's next system-wide software update. On one side, the concept has been applauded by ether investors. Lacking a formal stance on similar to say, bitcoin's limited 21 million bitcoin supply, some investors have remained cautious, if not confus Continue reading >>

Are You Afraid Of Ethereum Inflation?
just to know, I love ethereum and was lucky enought to start buy&hold since the beginning, anyway a point that scares me a bit is that there is no limit to ether. What do you think? New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast Ethereum is poised to be deflationary. We have the ice age happening and issuance reduction. There's a great deal of discussion about it on /r/ethtrader , but the important bit is "absolutely not". Also proof of stake and platforms and like ENS will freeze up portions of ETH, which will artificially shrink the circulating supply. Does it seem like the level of inflation has had a negative effect on the price so far? Inflation is only going down from here. redditor for 3 months1 point 1 year ago 11 million new coins in the next 12 months is a lot to absorb. Apparently they're changing the rules at some point though? I was under the impression that 100 million was the cap? It's not a cap. It's an estimated amount. Once PoS is out, there is very low incentive to reward the people validating the blocks as that is a trivial amount of processing power compared to PoW. Consequently, the "mined" Ether doesn't exists anymore, instead there is a ~1% inflation per year (exact amount not determined yet, but generally speaking low). That 1% is split amongst the people staking their Ethers out of circulation. So you can expect 15% of all Ether to be staked (or some such amount), which also means that that much Ether are out of circulation. Continue reading >>
Concerns About Inflationary Nature Of Ether
Concerns about inflationary nature of Ether First off, I want to say that I'm incredibly bullish and excited about Ethereum and all of its applications. I think it is truly revolutionary and I'm so excited for what the future holds. I've been running some numbers after learning about the supply schedule of Ether, and I'm wondering how other traders are taking into account this supply schedule in valuing Ether. If you want to read more in detail from the official site, you can read it here: The gist is that we started with 72 million Ether, and ~18 million will be mined each year. This causes inflation, but the percentage of inflation trends towards 0 in the long run as the supply keeps increasing, but the marginal amount mined each year is still capped by a fixed amount of 18 million. That sounds nice, however in the short term, that 18 million Ether per year is a huge percentage of the Ether in circulation. The first year it represents 25% of the total Ether. After running some numbers it is quite staggering how much value any given Ether loses due to inflation. Here is a simple spreadsheet showing how the Ether in supply grows, and how the price would change given no change in underlying value per Ether: As you can see, after just 5 years, the value is halved. And after 20 years, its cut down by 5x. I know the assumption that the market cap of Ether is set is a very flawed way of looking at things, but it gives you a kind of baseline for what would happen to the value of Ether if nothing fundamental changed about its Market Cap. In other words, if we want our Ether to hold, or gain value, we have to overcome that level of inflation, plus more. As I said before, I'm still bullish, even given this data, but I wanted to see what the community thought about it. Continue reading >>
Ethereum [eth] May Skip Casper To Focus On Sharding
Ethereum [ETH] May Skip Casper to Focus on Sharding Ethereum is taking the problem of scalability very seriously with a possible decision of skipping Casper FFG to focus directly on the development of Sharding. Sharding is the most critical scalability solution proposed by Vitalik Buterin and consists of subdividingthe blockchain into small parts according to the needs that arise. Casper FFG is a scalability solution that proposes to move from PoW to PoS, saving resources and increasing transaction efficiency. But one of the problems with PoS is the possibility of a higher level of centralization, something that the Ethereum community seeks to avoid at all costs. Currently, Ethereum uses a PoW consensus algorithm. However, the network has grown so much due to the support of token that right now- counting ETH and the many ERC20 tokens it handles a more substantial number of transactions than the Bitcoin itself network. This not only caused Ethereums mining to grow exponentially but also increased concerns for efficient resource management. Casper FFG was one of the first proposed solutions. Previous studies had already shown that the energy consumption of Bitcoin and Ethereums PoW is a real problem. The implementation of a PoS protocol eliminates this situation by using a form of validation that in turn promotes savings and avoids inflation. However, this type of second layer ethereum scalability proposals have evolved in their own pace making it difficult to keep a uniform follow-up of all the projects that developers are working on. A few hours ago, Reddit user Roynalnaruto published a post in which he mentioned the possibility of a joint release of Casper and Sharding protocols. It shows a video of Vitalik talking about a Casper+Sharding Validator. In the absence of Continue reading >>
Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin: 3 Reasons To Doubt Cryptocurrencies - Cbs News
By Anthony Mirhaydari MoneyWatch December 13, 2017, 9:16 PM 3 reasons to doubt bitcoin, ethereum, litecoin and other cryptocurrencies Last Updated Dec 13, 2017 9:16 PM EST Bitcoin's euphoric rise has spread, something like cancer, into other "alt coins," pushing up the value of ethereum and litecoin, among other cryptocurrencies. Ask the regular Joe diving into cryptocurrencies via credit cards the difference between regular bitcoin and various bitcoin "forks" like bitcoin cash, bitcoin gold and bitcoin diamonds. Joe probably doesn't care. Price hikes are creating the excitement , not any real currency trading discussions on, say, statement-of-work vs. proof-of-stake. The focus is on whether bitcoin will hit $20,000 on the U.S.-focused exchanges (already eclipsing that mark in South Korea, where the crypto mania is even bigger). Nothing else seems to matter. But the bitcoin bulls, especially those who care about the bigger picture, need to answer these issues; In a chart from Convoy Investments that went viral Tuesday, bitcoin is now officially the biggest bubble the world has ever seen , as measured as a multiple of its starting price. The spike eclipses the chaos around Dutch "tulip mania" in the 1600s, the Mississippi Bubble of the 1700s, and the dot-com bubble of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The rise has been so swift and severe that even bitcoin insiders are joining with regulators and other officials to warn of the downside risks. Coinbase founder Brian Armstrong wrote in a blog post that bitcoin prices are volatile and that folks should "invest responsibly." Mike Novogratz, a famed hedge fund manager turned crypto-investor, called it "the biggest bubble of our lifetimes." Even the founder of liitecoin told potential buyers Monday night that buying his currenc Continue reading >>
The Inflation Problem
Bitcoin set out to solve the problem of a centralized organization (The Federal Reserve) controlling the printing of money. Bitcoin solved this problem by giving the right to print money to Code, because Code is Law. At the same time, it decided that a hard cap was a desirable feature. But the problem of centrally-controlled money printing wasn't solved by creating a hard cap, it was solved by putting code in control of the minting of new money. The hard cap is just a designers-choice that was made. Having reasonable constant inflation that is controlled by code is an equally-viable answer to the centralized money printing problem. Inflation is a good thing There is a reason why it exists. It allows economies to grow, without people hoarding all the currency. If we cap ETH supply, then people will hoard ETH rather than spend ETH, and if people hoard ETH, then it is less financially viable to produce new dApps, or innovate new smart-contracts, or create anything of value on the ETH network, because no-one is paying ETH to do those activities. ETH cannot be a hoarded currency. It is absolutely integral that ETH be spent at high velocity, so they network can be fueled with the gas needed to provide incentive for people to build things. What Is Ether?
Ether is a necessary element a fuel for operating the distributed application platform Ethereum. It is a form of payment made by the clients of the platform to the machines executing the requested operations. To put it another way, ether is the incentive ensuring that developers write quality applications (wasteful code costs more), and that the network remains healthy (people are compensated for their contributed resources). If you just want to test the technology, you probably don't need real ether. Download the latest Wallet app and switch to the Test Network Check your ether presale balance safely here: The total supply of ether and its rate of issuance was decided by the donations gathered on the 2014 presale. The results were roughly: 60 million ether created to contributors of the presale 12 Million (20% of the above) were created to the development fund, most of it going to early contributors and developers and the remaining to the Ethereum Foundation 5 ethers are created every block (roughly 15 seconds) to the miner of the block 2-3 ethers are sometimes sent to another miner if they were also able to find a solution but his block wasn't included (called uncle/aunt reward) Note that after the Byzantium update is implemented, the mining and uncle reward is reduced to 3 ethers and 0.625-2.625 ethers, respectively. No. According to the terms agreed by all parties on the 2014 presale, issuance of ether is capped at 18 million ether per year (this number equals 25% of the initial supply). This means that while the absolute issuance is fixed, the relative inflation is decreased every year. In theory if this issuance was kept indefinitely then at some point the rate of new tokens created every year would reach the average amount lost yearly (by misuse, accidental key Continue reading >>
Bitcoin Vs Ethereum Which One Is Better?
Bitcoin vs Ethereum Which one is Better? With all of the commotion going on in the world of cryptocurrency, some interesting questions arise. A lot of people still feel they need to choose between Bitcoin or Ethereum, because one of them has to be better than the other. That is not the case by any means, as both ecosystems are trying to do things entirely. However, there are some aspects of both currencies which can be referred to as being better than its counterpart. On paper, one could argue Bitcoin is better than any other cryptocurrency, token, or digital asset because those other offerings would not be around, were it not for Bitcoin. In this regard, the popular cryptocurrency has a leg up over any other currency in existence. Bitcoin will always be the first major cryptocurrency, and it has been around for 9 years now. Ethereum, on the other hand, only came to market a few years ago. That being said, Ethereum offers some interesting pieces of technology. Smart contracts have been quite a revolutionary technology, although the same concept will be part of the Bitcoin protocol soon. Bitcoin has a disturbing lack of decentralized application possibilities, which makes Ethereum seem better in this regard. Then again, there is no major decentralized application in existence to be embraced by mainstream society either. Ethereum has a technological edge over Bitcoin, but until it is used by the masses, it is a matter of semantics. When we look at the available supply of currency, Bitcoin is clearly more scarce than Ethereum. In fact, Bitcoin has a hard coin supply cap of 21 million BTC. Ethereum has over 92 million coins in circulation, with more being mined every day. Even when Ethereum switches to proof of stake, it will remain an inflationary currency to some degree. I read Vitalik, ETH and 0 soon, didn't like it :P Is that what this is saying? Can you explain in a little more detail? He is saying that the amount of ether to ever exist will not likely go much over 100mil because of POS. Less Ether means higher value per ether. redditor for 2 months1 point 1 year ago No you misunderstood. The amount of ether will never decrease. It will simply become less inflationary. But there will always be more ether tomorrow than there was yesterday, which always drives the price lower. Less inflation simply means less downward price pressure. I didn't misunderstand. Less ether being created means less ether. I am aware it will never decrease. redditor for 2 months0 points 1 year ago No, there will only be more ether, never less. A slower rate of creation still means more ether, just not as much more ether as in an even more inflationary scenario. It's still more ether, it's still inflationary. 6 points 1 year ago edited 1 year ago I don't see how you could reason this as a change to inflation. It's exactly the same inflation we expected to see with the growing difficulty and under PoS. But somehow forking away the difficulty bomb meant extending the current block rewards with it...?
