Explaining The Genesis Block In Ethereum

Explaining The Genesis Block In Ethereum

Every blockchain has to start somewhere, so theres whats called a genesis block at the beginning. This is the first block, and in it the creators of Ethereum were at liberty to say To start, the following accounts all have X units of my cryptocurrency. Any transfer of that ether on the blockchain will have originated from one of these initial accounts (or from mining). Every time we launch Ethereum, we actually recreate this genesis block from scratch. Syncing the blockchain with peers only begins at block 1. The genesis block is created using the genesis state file or genesis.json in Geth. This file contains all the data that will be needed to generate block 0, including who starts out with how much ether. Heres an example of a custom genesis state file that initializes this block. // genesis.json{ "alloc": { "0xca843569e3427144cead5e4d5999a3d0ccf92b8e": { "balance": "1000000000000000000000000000" }, "0x0fbdc686b912d7722dc86510934589e0aaf3b55a": { "balance": "1000000000000000000000000000" } }, "config": { "chainID": 68, "homesteadBlock": 0, "eip155Block": 0, "eip158Block": 0 }, "nonce": "0x0000000000000000", "difficulty": "0x0400", "mixhash": "0x0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000", "coinbase": "0x0000000000000000000000000000000000000000", "timestamp": "0x00", "parentHash": "0x0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000", "extraData": "0x43a3dfdb4j343b428c638c19837004b5ed33adb3db69cbdb7a38e1e50b1b82fa", "gasLimit": "0xffffffff"} Lets break down some of the fields in the genesis state file. The Ethereum Project's logo, first used in 2014 Ethereum is an open-source , public, blockchain -based distributed computing platform featuring smart contract (scripting) functionality. [2] It provides a decentralized Turing-complete virtual machine , the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which can execute scripts using an international network of public nodes. Ethereum also provides a cryptocurrency token called "ether", which can be transferred between accounts and used to compensate participant nodes for computations performed. [3] "Gas", an internal transaction pricing mechanism, is used to mitigate spam and allocate resources on the network. [2] [4] Ethereum was proposed in late 2013 by Vitalik Buterin , a cryptocurrency researcher and programmer. Development was funded by an online crowdsale between July and August 2014. [5] The system went live on 30 July 2015, with 11.9 million coins "premined" for the crowdsale. [6] This accounts for approximately 13 percent of the total circulating supply. In 2016, as a result of the collapse of The DAO project, Ethereum was forked into two separate blockchains - the new forked version became Ethereum (ETH), and the original continued as Ethereum Classic (ETC). Sale period: 42 days (22 July to 2 Sept 2014) Recorded in bitcoin address aka ethereum exodus: Ether sold: 60,108,506.26 ether (83.47% of genesis) = 11,901,484.239480 ether (16.53% of genesis) at address 0x5abfec25f74cd88437631a7731906932776356f9 Count of sale orders with unique address: 8,890 = 8,890 + foundation + 2 addresses with 0 wei Bitcoins received in exodus exchanged for ether: Purchases can be done on ethereums sale site or by using a python tool. The process is that an ethereums private public key pair is first generated and the ether address obtained. A password encrypted file with the keys is sent to the buyer which will be needed to spend the ether bought. A bitcoin address can then be generated by assuming the ether address is the SHA256( RIPEMD160() ) of a bitcoin public key. Then bitcoin can be sent to the exodus address with 20,000 satoshis used as the network fee, 10,000 satoshis sent to the corresponding bitcoin address as change and the rest left in the exodus address spendable by the ethereums team. Note that the private public key pair for the bitcoin address is not known so the 10,000 satoshis are burned to record the sale order. The following 2 sale orders were sent after the end of the sale period thus no ether was credited but they appeared in the genesis block. This is most probably a bug in the genesis block generator tool. 3d4e17efa6c9e1eac81d950deafc9b4abd905694358bbfd39cedcc82336f1ca5 eb49a9f1e6822938a208c6582797dcb0fdbd4ca0b3dd85c0ebaeb471ecdf2f2e ether address: 0x00c40fe2095423509b9fd9b754323158af2310f3 Adding on to the discussion above, if a buyer sent 1 bitcoin when the rate is 2,000 ether per bitcoin, his ether address will be credited with 2,000 ether but as 30,000 satoshis is not received by the exodus address the following calcul Continue reading >>

What Is The Ethereum Blockchain?

What Is The Ethereum Blockchain?

Cryptocurrency has gained a lot of traction in the past decade, especially with the rise of Bitcoin. But more recently, a new rising star has entered the game Ethereum. In fact, interest in this cryptocurrency is so high, forecasts speculate the price of graphics cards may be driven up , as miners attempt to generate as much currency as possible. Founder Vitalik Buterin said to Wired Magazine , When I came up with Ethereum, my first thought was, okay this thing is too good to be true and Im going to have five professional cryptographers raining down on me and telling me how stupid I am for not seeing a bunch of very obvious flaws. Two weeks later I was extremely surprised that none of that happened. But what is Ethereum and what does this new blockchain technology mean for the future of cryptocurrencies? Here is a quick rundown. Cryptocurrency is a type of digital currency created through the encryption process. Unlike a dollar bill or a quarter, which are physical assets, cryptocurrency does not have a physical form and, equally important, it isnt issued by a central bank or government agency. Cryptocurrency is basically data on the internet created through something called a blockchain. A blockchain is a digital ledger that is shared with many different computers. When a transaction occurs, that event is recorded into the blocks. However, for the transactions to be successfully recorded into the ledger, they must be validated by a preset number of computers within the blockchain network. What makes cryptocurrency unique is that any person can view the complete history of each and every transaction, which creates complete visibility. However, unlike the popular cryptocurrency Bitcoin, Ethereum is not just a digital currency its much more. The fundamental structure of Continue reading >>

Genesis Block - Bitcoin Wiki

Genesis Block - Bitcoin Wiki

A genesis block is the first block of a block chain . Modern versions of Bitcoin number it as block 0, though very early versions counted it as block 1. The genesis block is almost always hardcoded into the software of the applications that utilize its block chain. It is a special case in that it does not reference a previous block, and for Bitcoin and almost all of its derivatives, it produces an unspendable subsidy. Here is a representation of the genesis block [1] as it appeared in a comment in an old version of Bitcoin ( line 1613 ). The first section defines exactly all of the variables necessary to recreate the block. The second section is the block in standard printblock format, which contains shortened versions of the data in the first section. Ethereum Announces Official Launch Date

Ethereum Announces Official Launch Date

Ethereum has announced the official release date of the first Frontier version. Ethereum has announced the official release date of the first Frontier version, and provided a specific how to guide for setting up mining clients, clarifying some confusion about the release process. Staying true to the decentralization ethos, the Ethereum team has elaborated on their launch plan, which as they mentioned in a recent blog post , will be more of a grass roots emergence of the network rather than a launch from a central point. In the blog post, Stephan Tual explained that In the interest of decentralization and transparency, Ethereum will not provide the Genesis block as a download, but instead have created an open source script that anyone can use to generate the file. The community will need to generate the Genesis block from the open source script, using a hash of block 1,028,201 of the current Ethereum testnet. This number was chosen because it turns out to be both prime and palindromic, just the way we like it, said Tual. Roughly speaking, and depending on where you are located, this block will come to be at around late July 29 to early July 30, according to ethdev statistics . Many followers, investors and speculators are likely waiting for the moment when Ether trading on exchanges will begin. Exactly which exchanges will be trading, however is not yet clear. One rumor on an Ethereum observation thread on Bitcointalk, stated that Poloneix will be one of them. The forum user also points out that Gatecoin Exchange is allowing buy order sides and quotes Ethereum saying that Several exchanges will support Ethereum on launch, but offers no source. Either way, all the major exchanges will likely be trading it soon. However, this will not begin during block 1,028,201 due to a Continue reading >>

Go Ethereum - What Does The Difficulty Value Represent In A Geth Genesis Block Config? - Ethereum Stack Exchange

Go Ethereum - What Does The Difficulty Value Represent In A Geth Genesis Block Config? - Ethereum Stack Exchange

What does the difficulty value represent in a Geth genesis block config? If you want to start a private net with Geth, then you need to create a Genesis Block. You specify the attributes of this block through a config file. One of these configurations is 'difficulty'. An example I've seen is this: "difficulty": "0x0400". My question is, what does this number represent? From what I've gathered, it means set the target such that there's a 1/1024 chance in finding a hash that meets the target. The difficulty value here is the reciprocal of the probability that the hash for mining the first block is "good" and that the block gets included in the blockchain. For example, in the Ethereum main net, this value is 0x400000000, or 17179869184 in decimal. So about one in 17179869184 hashes lead to a valid block. If the total hash power of miners is 1717986918 hashes per second (one tenth of the genesis block's difficulty), then it would take about 10 seconds to mine a block. The value was set much higher than you would use for a private net because there was projected to be a lot more competition for mining main net Ethereum at the very beginning than most/all private chains to date would see. If the genesis block's difficulty is too low for a decentralized set of miners with relatively high latency, the effects of "instamining" (blocks found very quickly) would lead to extreme blockchain forking. This is not a problem on a private network with one computer or very few computers in a higher-latency environment; forking is less of an issue (or not at all on one computer) and the automatic difficulty retargeting should readily adjust the difficulty so as to avoid future forking. Setting this value too high means it would take considerable time to mine the first several blocks befor Continue reading >>

Any Forecast On Genesis Block Date? - Ethereum

Currently standing at 80%, down from about 50% when was written about a month ago. I've heard some muttering that things are going quite well and a couple of tricky things went better than expected, but I'd balance that (carefully) against the reality that pre-launch usually turns up quite a few things at the end... Soon. I don't have a date, but it's headed to the point where we might start hazarding guesses when we get to 90% or so. I can't give you a forecast, but I can share you the progress on the frontier milestones issues this week: Avsa, thanks for posting this. It is useful good to see progress over time . that graph tells me... release is quite a long way off, I would guess Augustish. Open issues stable or slightly increased in the last week. The number of bugs closed are irrelevant. Open issues is the only thing that matters, presuming the number of testers & devs is constant.... on the plus side... it's going the right direction. Experience tells me, the issues not already addressed, will be harder to address. Developers don't often attack the most difficult issues first. The number of bugs closed is relevant because otherwise it may look like there is no work being done. Yes I agree. Just meant irrelevant to the projected end date Please please please take your time. Sorry to be evil but I HATE people trying to rush this platform to production. It is in my own personal financial interests for Ethereum to launch as late as possible but be as solid as possible. Besides my app isn't finished yet. I need my app to appear in the app store finished from day 1 of the launch of Mist. For that to happen I need 90 days before Mist launches. I am hoping frontier launches in 20 days or so and that it lasts for approx 2 months. That would be purrrrfect timing for me. T Continue reading >>

Ethereum Launches Own 'ether' Coin, With Millions Already Sold

Ethereum Launches Own 'Ether' Coin, With Millions Already Sold Yesterday, at midnight (CEST), Ethereum launched the presale of itsmuch-anticipated, platform-specific altcoin, ether. The surprise announcement caused something of a stir in the communityand the response has been extremely positive, with over 7millionether (ETH) soldafter approximately12 hours. Switzerland-based Ethereum and The Ethereum Project have made headlines this past year as potentiallyexciting examples of 'Cryptocurrency2.0', a term thatrefers to new applications built upon block chain technology. Ethereum is both a platform and a programming language that isaimedto make it possible for developers to build and publish applications that do not require trust in third parties to run. Ether is commonly referred to as the cryptofuel that runs the applications on Ethereums decentralized network. In practice, etherwill be required by anyone wishing to build upon oruse the Ethereum platform, and are, at this time, mostly suitable for people looking to developor distribute decentralized applications People have been waiting since Ethereums announcement in January at Miamis North American Bitcoin Conference to purchase the tokens. According to Ethereum , those purchasing ether now will lock in their supply at a known price, even though the actual coinswill not be available until the genesis block is mined, sometime in the winter of2014-2015. While this makes this sale look like a crowdfunding operation, the companymaintains it is a pre-sale event for a product, with funds going towards financing the continued development of the software platform. You are trusting us to take the bitcoin and use it to develop Ethereum, said Buterin. But we hope that after watching our development for sixmonths you have been co Continue reading >>
