If you are mining Ethereum you have the Ethash folder where the DAG dataset is generated, and the folder will get bigger and bigger. The chance is big that you came here to find out how you can move your Ethash folder. I had the same problem, I stored the DAG files on my primary partition, and after mining I had less and less space so that I wanted to change the DAG folder destination. In this article you will learn how to do exactly that, you will learn how to move or change your Ethash (DAG) folder. The problem is that we cant simply move the folder to another place or partition, also there is no easy option to change the destination. We need to do something manually. If you are Windows user, there is a feature that is pretty handy, the symbolic links and the mklink command. Symbolic links are pretty similar to shortcuts that you regularly create on your desktop, symbolic links are mainly there to reference files that are stored in another location. So, here is my case and how I did move the DAG files The problem was that I had the DAG stored in C:\Users\PC\AppData\LocalEthash but I wanted it to be in D:\ETH\Ethash. To solve the issue, I created the new folders first. I created the folder structure D:\ETH\Ethash. I moved all the files from C:\Users\PC\AppData\LocalEthash to D:\ETH\Ethash. Now I clicked on start in Windows and typed cmd into the search to open the Windows command shell. Then I typed mklink /D C:\Users\PC\AppData\Local\Ethash D:\ETH\Ethash into the shell. This command creates a symbolic directory link, so that there is a reference where the files are now located. Note that my Windows user folder is called PC, that means you have to use your own folder name there if you want to use the mklink command. Also, in all implementations please include a spec revision number Ethash is the planned PoW algorithm for Ethereum 1.0. It is the latest version of Dagger-Hashimoto, although it can no longer appropriately be called that since many of the original features of both algorithms have been drastically changed in the last month of research and development. The general route that the algorithm takes is as follows: There exists a seed which can be computed for each block by scanning through the block headers up until that point. From the seed, one can compute a 16 MB pseudorandom cache. Light clients store the cache. From the cache, we can generate a 1 GB dataset, with the property that each item in the dataset depends on only a small number of items from the cache. Full clients and miners store the dataset. The dataset grows linearly with time. Mining involves grabbing random slices of the dataset and hashing them together. Verification can be done with low memory by using the cache to regenerate the specific pieces of the dataset that you need, so you only need to store the cache. The large dataset is updated once every 30000 blocks, so the vast majority of a miner's effort will be reading the dataset, not making changes to it. Mining success depends on the set block difficulty. Block difficulty dynamically adjusts each block in order to regulate the network hashing power to produce a 12 second blocktime. Your chances of finding a block therefore follows from your hashrate relative to difficulty. Ethash uses a DAG (directed acyclic graph) for the proof of work algorithm, this is generated for each epoch, i.e., every 30000 blocks (125 hours, ca. 5.2 days). The DAG takes a long time to generate. If clients only generate it on demand, you may see a long wait at each epoch transition before the first block of the new epoch is found. However, the DAG only depends on the block number, so it can and should be calculated in advance to avoid long wait times at each epoch transition. Both geth and ethminer implement automatic DAG generation and maintains two DAGs at a time for smooth epoch transitions. Automatic DAG generation is turned on and off when mining is controlled from the console. It is also turned on by default if geth is launched with the --mine option. Note that clients share a DAG resource, so if you are running multiple instances of any client, make sure automatic dag generation is switched off in all but one instance. Why did Ethereum design Ethash instead of using an existing memory-hard hash function? Ethereum uses the Ethash hash function for proof-of-work. It was designed specifically for this purpose by Vitalik based on previous work by Thaddeus Dryja. The main rule they teach you in a crypto class is: never roll out your own crypto. Why not take any of the existing memory hard hash functions? From scrypt used in Litecoin and its forks to any of the PHC competition finalists (e.g., Zcash later chose Equihash, the PHC winner, for its PoW). I did not find any academic papers with cryptanalysis of Ethash. This analysis elaborates on why password hashing and PoW are not entirely the same task, but still gives no rationale for designing a new algorithm. Ethash serves its purpose well for now, but what if a critical vulnerability is found? For a recently developed algorithm without years of cryptanalysis behind it it seems likely compared to more established alternatives.
