Ethereums Ethash algorithm is one of many algorithms designed for optimal mining on GPUs. Generally speaking, a GPU is good for mining all GPU-mineable cryptocurrency (including Ethereum Classic , Monero , Zcash , and Vertcoin). This situation gives GPU miners enviable flexibility, in order to be able to switch between over 40 coins that are based on their current profitability. If youre new to mining Ethereum , there are 4 important things you should know: Ethereum intends to switch to a Proof of Stake scheme called Casper. Although this switch has been delayed, its reasonable to expect that it will occur in late 2018. Ethereum mining will no longer be possible after that, unless a hybrid Proof of Work/Proof of Stake model is implemented. If so, rewards to miners will be significantly reduced, with perhaps half of all new coin rewards going to holders instead. Ethereum mining currently requires a GPU with at least 3 gigabytes of Video RAM (VRAM). This VRAM requirement is expected to grow to 4 gigs in 2018. What is the current DAG size? When do we expect to hit GPU limits? I have two mining rigs running, one with 2GB GPUs and one with 8GB cards. Recently, the rig with the 2GB cards failed due to the inability to upload the DAG to the GPU. What's the current DAG size for miners and when do we expect to hit GPU-relevant limits, e.g. 2GB, 3GB, 4GB and so on. Are there any precalculations available/possible? In the case with Ethereum, the mining performance decreases over time due to the increase of the DAG file size. More size puts more stress on the mining GPUs, which lowers their efficiency. However, this is only part of the story. The real issue is that a great drop in Ethereum hashrate is expected for Radeon RX 400 / RX 500 series in the next couple of months. By great I mean up to ~30% hashrate drop, which will increase gradually. According to statistics, users mine 30.000 blocks every 4-5 days. This amount of blocks is called a DAG Epoch. Every time we move to the next DAG epoch, the DAG file becomes larger. This means that weaker GPUS will have a harder time handling it. We are currently at DAG epoch #130. Once we hit DAG epoch #150 or so, the increased size of the DAG file will cause RX400 / RX500 GPUs to work with about 30% less efficiency. Ethereum mining: How many days before 3GB GPUs become obsolete On October 16, the Ethereum network will experience a planned hard fork, as the Byzantium update will be released, bringing increased mining rewards but also setting a hard End Of Life (EOL) limit for all mining GPUs with 3GB of RAM. Byzantium aims to prepare Ethereum for a future switch to Proof of Stake (PoS). The Proof of Stake is a much different algorithm to validate transactions and achieve distributed consensus than the current Proof of Work (PoW) Ethash algorithm which depends on energy-intense computations conducted by GPUs to solve a mathematical problem a process called mining as it is rewarded with new Eth coins. Among other features, the Byzantium hard-fork will bring increased block mining speed (estimated ~14.1 sec) which means lower transaction times for Ethereum users. For Ethereum miners who use their expensive GPUs for Eth mining 24/7, this means increased revenue. So Byzantium seems to be a win-win for both. At the same time, the higher block generation speed means that the Ethereums Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) file will be increasing faster than before. In order to make Ethereum mining memory-hard, its PoW algo employs DAG . It started at 1GB size and is growing linearly with the blockchain size. There are several problems with it, if we want PoW to be viable long-term for ETC. Over time the DAG outpaces most GPU memory size, and GPU mining may become impossible. Even the DAG size above 2GB is pushing the limits of memory bandwidth of current commercial GPUs, so the hashrate decreases dramatically. Where do I see the current, exact DAG size? Is it being tracked on a website somewhere, or is it something I can check on my miner? The DAG size is actually calculated by a fixed formula. However if you meant size of the current DAG file, it should have extra 8 bytes (magic number at the beginning of the file which is 8 bytes, documented here ). Im in the process of investing a nice chunk of cash for GPU rigs because of cheap power and cool location, but find conflicting info on the DAG size projections. Lets assume POS is delayed and mining continues, what is the best estimate how long 3GB cards can mine ETH? This subs faq seems to suggest Nov '18 deadline for the 3GB cards, how accurate is this prediction? Because earlier I found very different estimates. Would you invest in 1070 8 GB, 1060 6GB or 1060 3GB in the beginning of 2018 for new equipment? Of course, if the POS becomes reality in 2018 then move to other coins. I am home mining with 1070 8GB, 30MH / 100W seems pretty decent but of course the price point is a little higher. I see some 1060 cards can do close to 30MH but that depends on the memory, which is a bit of a lottery of which type you get? Which is unacceptable to get 1060 with shitty memory for a larger farm (100+ GPUs) such as this project. DAG is a dataset over 1GB in size used by Dagger Hashimoto algorithm (Ethash) to find block solutions in the blockchain. The main coin for Ethash, of course, is Ethereum. My Ethereum Mining Guide has been updated November 29, 2017 CryptoBadger 13 Comments Just a quick note that I finally sat down and updated the hardware , Linux , and Windows sections of my Ethereum mining guide today, bringing everything up-to-date with current best practices. The Linux setup guide especially deserves your attention if you set up your own rig in the recent past and have noticed a slow degradation in speed over time as the Ethereum DAG file has grown in size. Goodnow maybe GPU prices might start to come down again 200+ for a f*cking 4GB 470!! Sure am glad I hung onto my 290Xs , 32.5Mh/s each still. Didnt realize GDDR5X takes such a performance hit on the 1080! Care to email me and discuss some 290x stuff? Those are what im running and for what you can pick them up for right now i believe its one of the best cards out there! Wow impressive and interesting results to say the least . AMD has certainly the pace when it comes to mining but Nvidia seems to have the endurance . 1060 is the new 470 i guess lol . Cant wait to sell mine at 500bucks Glad that 6 weeks ago when I was struggling to find RX570s and 80s and was looking for alternatives I decided to switch to 1060 and 1070s that were still available relatively cheap. More expensive than a retail price RX but at least they wont fall off a cliff in 3 months. People worry about difficulty and forget about the DAG and the fact AMD and Nvidia are sold out world wide, the recent difficulty climb will likely level off soon (many AMD cards running close to 30% slower and 3GB 1060s will likely be obsolete by early 2018). There is a finite number of GPUs out there that can do this stuff cost effectively. Even the new Vega card launches in August really are not supposed to provide much inventory till early 2018 and any new Nvidia GPU models will like be 6-12 months away. So you would say to stay with Nvidia and not go with AMD RX570s ? I have 12 570s incoming in about 2-3 weeks. Well considering RX 400/500 series take a big hit starting from DAG 150 (about 3 months ) But they are a lot cheaper than GTX 1060. But I should keep the 1060s Ive bought and not return them then.. As of now, January 16, 2017 the DAG size for Ethereum (ETH) is 2.28GB. Why is this important?, the DAG size determines if a GPU can mine a particular currency or not. The current DAG size for ETH is 2.28GB, which means GPUs with memory size of 2GB can not mine ETH. However, a 2GB GPU can still mine Musicoin, Expanse, Ubiq & Soilcoin. According to , 4GB GPUs won't be able to mine ETH in 3 years, 6GB GPUs in 7 years, and 8GB GPUs in 10 years. This calculator is only an estimate of when a GPU may be obsolete, but depending on how fast each block is mined a 4GB GPU may still be useful well past 3 years. So if you're like me and would like to prepare (as much as possible) for the worst, I personally would stick with 8GB GPUs just to be on the safe side. If 8GB GPUs aren't available 6GB GPUs would be sufficient. Here's a little status update of what I have mined, coming close to 1/2 an ETH, WHOO!! I ran into some problems here and there. On January 12th, Windows decided to randomly freeze on me for an hour and I decided to diagnose the problem, which gave me a blank screen for 10-20 minutes. I got scared and reverted everything back to the way it was and gave up.
