Im in the process of investing a nice chunk of cash for GPU rigs because of cheap power and cool location, but find conflicting info on the DAG size projections. Lets assume POS is delayed and mining continues, what is the best estimate how long 3GB cards can mine ETH? This subs faq seems to suggest Nov '18 deadline for the 3GB cards, how accurate is this prediction? Because earlier I found very different estimates. Would you invest in 1070 8 GB, 1060 6GB or 1060 3GB in the beginning of 2018 for new equipment? Of course, if the POS becomes reality in 2018 then move to other coins. I am home mining with 1070 8GB, 30MH / 100W seems pretty decent but of course the price point is a little higher. I see some 1060 cards can do close to 30MH but that depends on the memory, which is a bit of a lottery of which type you get? Which is unacceptable to get 1060 with shitty memory for a larger farm (100+ GPUs) such as this project. DAG is a Directed Acyclic Graph. It is used in all Ethash coins, like Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Musiccoin, Expanse, Ubiq and other coins to provide a proof of work. DAG file is generated every mining epoch and it increases from epoch to epoch. It is very important to know current and future size of DAG file because it has a huge impact on the mining speed. DAG file is locating directly in your GPU memory. And if DAG file is bigger than your GPU memory so your GPUs become useless. Goodnow maybe GPU prices might start to come down again 200+ for a f*cking 4GB 470!! Sure am glad I hung onto my 290Xs , 32.5Mh/s each still. Didnt realize GDDR5X takes such a performance hit on the 1080! Care to email me and discuss some 290x stuff? More expensive than a retail price RX but at least they wont fall off a cliff in 3 months. People worry about difficulty and forget about the DAG and the fact AMD and Nvidia are sold out world wide, the recent difficulty climb will likely level off soon (many AMD cards running close to 30% slower and 3GB 1060s will likely be obsolete by early 2018). There is a finite number of GPUs out there that can do this stuff cost effectively. Even the new Vega card launches in August really are not supposed to provide much inventory till early 2018 and any new Nvidia GPU models will like be 6-12 months away. So you would say to stay with Nvidia and not go with AMD RX570s ? I have 12 570s incoming in about 2-3 weeks. Well considering RX 400/500 series take a big hit starting from DAG 150 (about 3 months ) But they are a lot cheaper than GTX 1060. But I should keep the 1060s Ive bought and not return them then.. We know that it's possible to pre-calculate the DAG for a given Epoch. Consequently, we can know in advance how a graphics card will perform in three, six, or 12 months. Up until recently (and unlike the GeForce cards), AMD's Radeons suffered a drop in performance with each DAG increase. AMD thankfully released a driver tailored for mining that is supposed to correct this problem. This is why we performed our tests with the Crimson Edition 17.7.2 and ReLive Edition Beta for Blockchain Compute drivers. We chose to test these cards at their stock frequencies and also with our settings optimized for a given power consumption (indicated on each chart). Lastly, the Radeons were tested with their original BIOSes and our modified firmware, optimizing the GDDR5 timings. The GeForce GTX 1060 3GB does not have enough memory starting with DAG Epoch 180 (just months away) to mine Ethereum! With AMD's classic drivers, the Radeons effectively see a drop in performance with each advance in DAG Epoch. This problem is corrected with the ReLive Edition Beta for Blockchain Compute drivers. The performance for GeForce cards does not vary, no matter the size of the DAG. Beware though: Claymore's Dual Ethereum + Decred/Siacoin/Lbry/Pascal GPU Miner software does not allow you to simulate a DAG Epoch above 200. Therefore, it is impossible to know how any card will behave long-term. The performance of certain Radeon cards drops slightly with the largest DAG Epoch, particularly when we optimize GPU clock rate and voltage for improved efficiency. The GPU performance of certain cards could therefore prove to be insufficient above a certain DAG Epoch, at which point you'll need to dial in a higher frequency (necessitating higher voltages and more power consumption) to maintain the same hash rate. In order to make Ethereum mining memory-hard, its PoW algo employs DAG . It started at 1GB size and is growing linearly with the blockchain size. There are several problems with it, if we want PoW to be viable long-term for ETC. Over time the DAG outpaces most GPU memory size, and GPU mining may become impossible. Even the DAG size above 2GB is pushing the limits of memory bandwidth of current commercial GPUs, so the hashrate decreases dramatically. So far I've seen the following suggestions to deal with this issue: Tweak with the DAG expansion parameters to slow or stop its growth ( #4 (comment) ) Extend the epoch (DAG regeneration interval) length from current 30000 blocks to something else, without doing any other changes Make DAG oscillate cyclically between 1 and 2 GB sizes ( #4 (comment) ) Hey - the replay attack ECIP is in progress, currently named 1011 in my branch. I suggest that we leave ECIPs open as PRs while they are discussed instead of duplicating efforts by creating new issues. Today we're going to take a quick look at how current generation GPUs, along with a few older ones, perform when put to the task of Ethereum mining . Cryptocurrency mining is big news at the moment and it seems just about everyone wants in on the action. We are often asked what the best GPUs to mine with are, and since we didnt have an exact answer we decided to find out. First, I should note that performance can vary significantly depending on the display driver used, the software client used, and the configuration of the graphics card, so please take this as a rough performance guide. Initially I started testing with the go-ethereum client but started to find mixed results with certain GPUs, I wasnt sure why that was and couldnt solve a few issues, so I scrapped the results and moved on. Parity is another popular client, but instead I decided to use Claymores Dual Ethereum miner version 9.6 for a few reasons. Number one was it worked really well with the current generation AMD and Nvidia GPUs. Second, I worked out a way to benchmark using different DAG (directed acyclic graph) file sizes. Chances are the other clients can do this as well, I just didnt work out how. I felt it important to test various DAG file sizes to show future performance as well. As the DAG file size increases, so too does the difficulty. A new DAG is generated for each epoch around every 30,000 blocks and right now it is estimated that this will happen every 4 days or so.
