But, with part shortages causing frustrating shipping commitments, were changing gears. Weve gotten several requests for a budget mining rig build. And, with a lot of people also inquiring about cheaper GPUs, such as Nvidias GeForce 3 GB 1060 cards, we decided wed bite. GeForce 3 GB GTX 1060s are easy enough to get your hands on, and, as far as cheap-but-still-competent goes, theyre definitely worth consideration. First things first. One thing we like so much about CPU and GPU mining (as opposed to ASIC mining) is that it is truly meant to be accessible to all. Ordering ASICs from China with cryptocurrencies isnt straightforward. Building a 6 or 8 GPU beast with the latest-and-greatest components isnt realistic for everyone, especially when getting started. Were doing this build because getting into GPU mining doesnt have to be expensive. Well get plenty of heat saying that we could build a much faster rig. That is true. But, we bet we get more interest in this build than the ones we fire the money cannon at. Why arent 3 GB 1060s as popular as 1070s and 1080s? Most of the rigs we build for people are using cards with 8 GB of video ram or more, mainly GeForce 1070s and 1080s. First, 1070s and 1080s hash faster than 1060s. Lets acknowledge that. But, occasionally the price is right and it seems like you could back up the truck and just get a few extra 1060s to counteract what 1070s can pull off. But, its not that simple. In the case with Ethereum, the mining performance decreases over time due to the increase of the DAG file size. More size puts more stress on the mining GPUs, which lowers their efficiency. However, this is only part of the story. The real issue is that a great drop in Ethereum hashrate is expected for Radeon RX 400 / RX 500 series in the next couple of months. By great I mean up to ~30% hashrate drop, which will increase gradually. According to statistics, users mine 30.000 blocks every 4-5 days. This amount of blocks is called a DAG Epoch. Every time we move to the next DAG epoch, the DAG file becomes larger. This means that weaker GPUS will have a harder time handling it. We are currently at DAG epoch #130. I get 22MH/s on all epoch with a 1060 6GB. Why this is happening / history of other cards: This particular slowdown is not directly related to memory speed, it's the result of translation lookaside buffer thrashing, and it's impact varies greatly from architecture to architecture and how the buffer was implemented. GPUs simply were not designed to make random accesses to a multi-GB contiguous chunk of data in VRAM. Pitcairn (256bit) and Tahiti (384 bit) suffered greatly from this and have continually lost performance as the DAG grew, whereas Hawaii (512bit) and Tonga (256bit) were not significantly impacted and still get much the same hashrate they did last year. Goodnow maybe GPU prices might start to come down again 200+ for a f*cking 4GB 470!! Sure am glad I hung onto my 290Xs , 32.5Mh/s each still. Didnt realize GDDR5X takes such a performance hit on the 1080! Care to email me and discuss some 290x stuff? AMD has certainly the pace when it comes to mining but Nvidia seems to have the endurance . 1060 is the new 470 i guess lol . People worry about difficulty and forget about the DAG and the fact AMD and Nvidia are sold out world wide, the recent difficulty climb will likely level off soon (many AMD cards running close to 30% slower and 3GB 1060s will likely be obsolete by early 2018). There is a finite number of GPUs out there that can do this stuff cost effectively. Even the new Vega card launches in August really are not supposed to provide much inventory till early 2018 and any new Nvidia GPU models will like be 6-12 months away. So you would say to stay with Nvidia and not go with AMD RX570s ? I have 12 570s incoming in about 2-3 weeks. I've got a setup with a gtx 1060 3gb and a gtx 1050 4gb.Overnight, the 1060 started getting: CUDA error 11 - cannot write buffer for DAG I've tried: rebooting several times,running the two cards independently,disabling overclock,increased the page file to over 20gb. As far as I can tell, these are all the solutions everyone has suggested. Anyone have anything else I can try? I don't think the calculated DAG file size should reach over 3gb for a while (months). Today we're going to take a quick look at how current generation GPUs, along with a few older ones, perform when put to the task of Ethereum mining . Cryptocurrency mining is big news at the moment and it seems just about everyone wants in on the action. We are often asked what the best GPUs to mine with are, and since we didnt have an exact answer we decided to find out. First, I should note that performance can vary significantly depending on the display driver used, the software client used, and the configuration of the graphics card, so please take this as a rough performance guide. Initially I started testing with the go-ethereum client but started to find mixed results with certain GPUs, I wasnt sure why that was and couldnt solve a few issues, so I scrapped the results and moved on. Parity is another popular client, but instead I decided to use Claymores Dual Ethereum miner version 9.6 for a few reasons. Number one was it worked really well with the current generation AMD and Nvidia GPUs. Second, I worked out a way to benchmark using different DAG (directed acyclic graph) file sizes. Chances are the other clients can do this as well, I just didnt work out how. I felt it important to test various DAG file sizes to show future performance as well. As the DAG file size increases, so too does the difficulty. A new DAG is generated for each epoch around every 30,000 blocks and right now it is estimated that this will happen every 4 days or so. Mining success depends on the set block difficulty. Block difficulty dynamically adjusts each block in order to regulate the network hashing power to produce a 12 second blocktime. Your chances of finding a block therefore follows from your hashrate relative to difficulty. Ethash uses a DAG (directed acyclic graph) for the proof of work algorithm, this is generated for each epoch, i.e., every 30000 blocks (125 hours, ca. 5.2 days). The DAG takes a long time to generate. If clients only generate it on demand, you may see a long wait at each epoch transition before the first block of the new epoch is found. However, the DAG only depends on the block number, so it can and should be calculated in advance to avoid long wait times at each epoch transition. Both geth and ethminer implement automatic DAG generation and maintains two DAGs at a time for smooth epoch transitions. Automatic DAG generation is turned on and off when mining is controlled from the console. It is also turned on by default if geth is launched with the --mine option. Note that clients share a DAG resource, so if you are running multiple instances of any client, make sure automatic dag generation is switched off in all but one instance.
