An Introduction To Ethereum And Smart Contracts: A Programmable Blockchain

An Introduction to Ethereum and Smart Contracts: a Programmable Blockchain Bitcoin took the world by surprise in the year 2009 and popularized the idea of decentralized secure monetary transactions. The concepts behind it, however, can be extended to much more than just digital currencies. Ethereum attempts to do that, marrying the power of decentralized transactions with a Turing-complete contract system. In this post we will take a closer look at how Ethereum works and what makes it different from Bitcoin and other blockchains. Read on! In our previous post , we took a closer look at what blockchains are and how they help in making distributed, verifiable transactions a possibility. Our main example was Bitcoin: the world's most popular cryptocurrency. Millions of dollars, in the form of bitcoins, are traded each day, making Bitcoin one of the most prominent examples of the viability of the blockchain concept. Have you ever found yourself asking this question: "what would happen if the provider of this service or application disappeared?" If you have, then learning about Ethereum can make a big difference for you. Ethereum is a platform to run decentralized applications: applications that do not rely on any central server. In this post we will explore how Ethereum works and build a simple PoC application related to authentication. A blockchain is a distributed, verifiable datastore. It works by marrying public-key cryptography with the nobel concept of the proof-of-work. Each transaction in the blockchain is signed by the rightful owner of the resource being traded in the transaction. When new coins (resources) are created they are assigned to an owner. This owner, in turn, can prepare new transactions that send those coins to others by simply embedding the new owner Continue reading >>

Ethereums Smart Contracts Are Full Of Holes

Ethereums smart contracts are full of holes Blockchain-powered computer programs promise to revolutionize the digital economy, but new research suggests theyre far from secure. Computer programs that run on blockchains are shaking up the financial system. But much of the hype around what are called smart contracts is just that. Its a brand-new field. Technologists are just beginning to figure out how to design them so they can be relied on not to lose peoples money, andas a new survey of Ethereum smart contracts illustratessecurity researchers are only now coming to terms with what a smart-contract vulnerability even looks like. A self-driving Uber has killed a pedestrian in Arizona This piece appears in our twice-weekly newsletter Chain Letter, which covers the world of blockchain and cryptocurrencies. Sign up here its free! Digital vending machines: The term smart contract comes from digital currency pioneer Nick Szabo, who coined it more than 20 years ago (and who may or may not be Satoshi Nakamoto ). The basic idea, he wrote , is that many kinds of contractual clauses (such as collateral, bonding, delineation of property rights, etc.) can be embedded in the hardware and software we deal with, in such a way as to make a breach of contract expensive (if desired, sometimes prohibitively so) for the breacher. Szabo called physical vending machines a primitive ancestor of smart contracts, since they take coins and dispense a product and the correct change according to the displayed price. Enter the blockchain: Today, the most common conception of a smart contract is a computer program stored on a blockchain. A blockchain is essentially a shared accounting ledger that uses cryptography and a network of computers to track assets and secure the ledger from tampering. For B Continue reading >>

Digital Assets And Smart Contracts: A Beginners Guide

Digital Assets and Smart Contracts: A Beginners Guide written by Jorn van Zwanenburg November 30, 2017 Upon entering the world of blockchain and cryptocurrencies, youve most likely come across the terms smart contracts and digital assets. Ethereum is the best known blockchain for the creation of smart contracts and digital assets, as are basically all cryptocurrencies. But what do these terms really mean and how are they relevant to you as a blockchain investor? Firstly, its important to understand what digital assets are. Assets are economic resources to which a value can be attached and that can be owned by a party. Moreover, an asset is expected to generate value in the future. Assets can be both tangible and intangible. Typical examples of tangible assets are property, machinery, inventories, precious metals and currencies. Intangible assets are goodwill, copyrights, trademarks and patents. With the growth of the internet, digital assets have made their introduction. They are subject to the same definition as regular assets; thus they can be owned and have an economic value. What makes them different from traditional assets is that digital assets are not in the physical world, but in the digital space. They are binary, thus in their essence they are combinations of 1s and 0s. Examples of digital assets are data, software, designs, electronic addresses, virtual items of virtual worlds and of course, cryptocurrencies. Most people have a hard time understanding the value of some digital assets as they are intangible and binary, which makes a lot of people believe that they have no intrinsic value. However, the current and continuously increasing value of the crypto market seems to provide evidence to the contrary . Most contracts currently run through centralised syst Continue reading >>

How Ethereum Became The Platform Of Choice For Icod Digital Assets

How Ethereum became the platform of choice for ICOd digital assets Jason Rowley is a venture capital and technology reporter for Crunchbase News . For most of the history of blockchain-based currencies and assets, the story has been all about Bitcoin. At a market capitalization of around $40 billion, it remains the most valuable cryptocurrency . But with the rise of a new chain on the ahem block, namely Ethereum , and new ways to fund the development of new crypto-platforms with ICOs, the narrative is shifting somewhat to the entire cryptographic asset class . Today, lets take a more in-depth look at some of the historical trends in the digital currency space, paying close attention to Ethereum and its role as the platform of choice for new cryptographic assets. The number of new digital assets is on the rise In roughly the past 12 months, the number of cryptocurrencies listed on CoinMarketCap.com , a main reference site for digital asset developers and speculators alike, has increased significantly. Below is a chart compiled from the count of cryptocurrencies listed on historic snapshots of the sites main table starting with the first snapshot on April 28, 2013 (featuring a whopping seven cryptocurrencies) and the most recent snapshot from June 4, 2017 . As of the June 4 snapshot, there were 809 cryptocurrencies and other digital assets listed on the main CoinMarketCap page. As ofMonday, June 5, 2017, at around 6:00 PM Central time, there were 857 cryptocurrencies and assets listed on the site. Between January 3, 2016 the first snapshot of 2016 and June 5, 2017, the number of cryptographic assets listed on CoinMarketCap grew from 551 to 857, an increase of about 56 percent in almost exactly 18 months. As the chart shows, the pace of growth in the number of crypto-back Continue reading >>

( Learn how and when to remove this template message ) A smart contract is a computer protocol intended to facilitate, verify, or enforce the negotiation or performance of a contract . Smart contracts were first proposed by Nick Szabo in 1996. [1] Proponents of smart contracts claim that many kinds of contractual clauses may be made partially or fully self-executing, self-enforcing, or both. The aim with smart contracts is to provide security that is superior to traditional contract law and to reduce other transaction costs associated with contracting. Smart contracts have been used primarily in association with cryptocurrencies . One real-world smart contract that gained mainstream coverage was The DAO , a decentralized autonomous organization for venture capital funding, running on Ethereum , which was launched with US$250 million in crowdfunding in May 2016 and was hacked and drained of 3,689,577 ETH three weeks later. [2] The phrase "smart contracts" was coined by Nick Szabo in 1996, and reworked over several years. Szabo's first publication, "Smart Contracts: Building Blocks for Digital Free Markets" was published in Extropy #16, [3] and then later reworked as "Formalizing and Securing Relationships on Public Networks." [4] These documents described how it would be possible to establish contract law and related business practices Continue reading >>
