Ethereum Address Has Uppercase And Lowercase Letters

Home Addresses Ethereum Address Has Uppercase And Lowercase Letters Ethereum Address Has Uppercase And Lowercase Letters "What does it mean if my address has uppercase and lowercase letters?"There are two versions of Ethereum addresses: one that contains uppercase letters and one that does not: 0x7cb57b5a97eabe94205c07890be4c1ad31e486a8 0x7cB57B5A97eAbe94205C07890BE4c1aD31E486A8 The one that is all lowercase is "not checksummed" meaning that you could mis-type a letter/number and it send it off and it would be lost forever. If you use the checksum'd version and mis-type it, it will tell you that it's an invalid address. For this reason, we warn you when you address is not checksummed. You can still send to it without issue but if you should double-check the address before doing so, especially if you hand-typed it. If you are sending to one of your own wallets, you can save the checksummed address via the "View Wallet Info" page and copy the address displayed there. Both addresses are exactly the same, except for the uppercase vs lowercase letters. Capitalization simply means the address has a checksum. Both will work exactly the same and have your funds. Is Ethereum Wallet Address Case Sensitive?

Is Ethereum Wallet Address Case Sensitive?

I sent some amount of ETH to a wallet. I checked the wallets balance on ether chain. I entered the address in the search field and noticed both lowercase and uppercase versions of the address seemed to work. I wanted to buy a few bucks more, but now I'm not sure if there is something wrong with the address I created. I'd be grateful for some guidance. @user1035 if you are satisfied with this answer please mark it as accepted by clicking on the check mark next to it. Joris Bontje Mar 19 '16 at 6:01 To verify, any addresses that's fully capitalized can be converted to an checksum address with right capitalization. So in that sense addresses are case insensitive - both addresses are the same. Unlike for example the unix/linux file system where you can have a file named 'Ethereum' and one named 'ethereum' in the same directory. Isn't that right? Gerbrand Sep 8 '16 at 12:23 @JorisBontje I think this answer could still be clarified. Changing the letters to upper case doesn't give the address a checksum. Peter Hall Jun 21 at 13:27 what does capitalization address mean exactly? this answer is a bit ambiguous knocte Jun 29 at 7:22 @tayvano's answer, while being essentially true, is a bit ambiguous (and incomplete, from a technical PoV), so I'm bringing the content of an answer from the Ethereum forum here: Ethereum wallet addresses are in hex [0-9A-F]*. While the address itself is case-insensitive (A is the same as a to the network), the case sensitivity is used as a (optional) checksum. It was built as an after-thought to an addressing scheme that lacked basic checksum validation. change nth letter of address according to the nth letter of the hash: So, you sha3 hash the address, and look at each Nth character of the sha result. If it's 7 or below, the Nth character in the add Continue reading >>

Subscribe to our daily newsletter. It is free, and it comes with many benefits. Just came in now after 45 minutes. Luno only has instant buy/sell for ETH, so no way to see if or when it transacts in the background Sorry about the wait, we saw some delays on orders being filled last night/ early this morning. Sorry about the wait, we saw some delays on orders being filled last night/ early this morning. No Problem. It was a large amount, so I got a little worried. 1) Can you please explain your fee structure for buying/selling ETH ? 2) What would attract the least amount ZAR<->ETH or BTC<-> ? I would also like to know about the fees involved when buying ETH on Luno. It seems WAY more (about 5%) than the 1% instant buy fee for Bitcoin... Yes, it seems to be a hefty 5% when buying. Scared to sell, just now Ioose another 5%.... Yes, it seems to be a hefty 5% when buying. Scared to sell, just now Ioose another 5%.... Yup same here! Can't find anything on Luno's website either. How do you access the Ethereum exchange charts? Not having an exchange is kinda missing the point of having buy/sell ability. How is this Ether obtained? I think Luno buggered this one up and should rather have waited till they have a full solution. As it is I might as well continue to use Changelly/Shapeshift When buying eth with ZAR on Luno, how long should it take to reflect? It's been 15minutes but my eth wallet is unchanged. About 20 mins my was there. Made R33 already .. of to steers to buy a burger I never apologise. Im sorry, thats just the way I am. I'm trying to send eth from luno to bittrex now... getting an error that the address must contain upper and lower case letters. I'm using the eth address bittrex has given me, which I've deposited to previously and is all lower case. Luno rep coul Continue reading >>

Yet Another Cool Checksum Address Encoding #55

Yet Another Cool Checksum Address Encoding #55

My preference is that a checksum-enabled Ethereum address is immediately recognizable as such. The proposed solution is not immediately recognizable as being distinct from a standard Ethereum address and could be confused for being a strangely-cased version of non-checksummed addresses. Although it offers superior backwards compatibility, I believe will only cause additional confusion to the end-user. Since the change in format serves to make the address less error prone through checksums, I posit they should also be immediately recognizable through a fixed prefix or otherwise obvious identifier. One reason why I prefer ICAP over this proposed solution is that it signals to the user clearly that this is an Ethereum address and cannot be confused with a transaction/block hash. I disagree @tgerring that it will cause confusion: to a layman, it will be indistinguishable from a normal address. This approach is very easy to implement in the client side and doesnt require much. I would say this could be adopted as a great intermediary before ICAP also would be a good alternative if ICAPs don't catch on. I did a rudimentary implementation on javascript in the web3 object: var isAddress = function (address) { if (!/^(0x)?[0-9a-f]{40}$/i.test(address)) { // check if it has the basic requirements of an address return false; } else if (/^(0x)?[0-9a-f]{40}$/.test(address) || /^(0x)?[0-9A-F]{40}$/.test(address)) { // If it's all small caps or all all caps, return true return true; } else { // Otherwise check each case address = address.replace('0x',''); // creates the case map using the binary form of the hash of the address var caseMap = parseInt(web3.sha3('0x'+address.toLowerCase()),16).toString(2).substring(0, 40); for (var i = 0; i < 40; i++ ) { // the nth letter should be uppe Continue reading >>

Ethereum Address Is Not Formatted Properly

Ethereum Address Is Not Formatted Properly

Ethereum address is not formatted properly When inputting a receive address, or when scanning a QR code, into the Exodus Ethereum (ETH), Ethereum Classic (ETC), or any Ethereum-based token "Send " input area: Warning! The address is not formatted properly. Please double-check each character in the address. If you send to a wrong address, your funds cannot be recovered! Ethereum addresses have a mixture of upper and lower case letters, and they are case sensitive! For example, here is a valid receive address for ETH: 0x507877C2E26f1387432D067D2DaAfa7d0420d90a.If you were to alter one of the letters in the middle, 0x507877C2E26f1387432E067D2DaAfa7d0420d90a('E067' instead of 'D067'), Exodus will catch this and not allow it to pass. The reason is because we internally run what's called a "checksum" on the address itself to verify the internal integrityof the address. Exodus will not allow addresses which fail the checksum to pass. However, if you were to change the case of the address, for example, like so: 0x507877c2e26f1387432d067d2daafa7d0420d90a(all lower case letters), it would technically still be the same address. However, the checksumming is completely defeated and there is no way Exodus can tell if the address is good or not. The above address will work; however, this address,0x507877c2e26f1387432e067d2daafa7d0420d90a(altered so that the 'd067' is now 'e067'), would only appear to work. Exodus used to allow the altered, lowercase address to go through, but your funds would go nowhere and be lost forever. What Exodus now has is the ability to test the address and make sure it is "mixed case."This allows you, the user, to be certain the address is being checked for correctness, and will prevent you from accidentally sending funds to a malformed address and losing th Continue reading >>
