How To Use Ethereum - Coindesk

The thought of using ethereum might sound intimidating, but it could be rewarding. If the 'unstoppable world computer' develops according to plan, it could provide alternatives to the Facebooks and Googles that many people use everyday(as explained in " What is Ethereum? "). Ethereummight not be as intuitive as the web as we know it today, but still, anyone with a computer or a smartphone can try the platformout as long as they own ' ether 'unique pieces of code that allow updates to the blockchain's ledger. First, you need a place to securely store your ether (or at least a place to store your private keys). This brings us to ethereum 'wallets'. One caveat is that losing your private key is a much bigger deal than misplacing a password: it means losing your ether, forever. Removing trusted partiesis a two-edged sword. While intermediaries are no longer needed to verify transactions, there's no help desk to turn to for help recovering your secret key. With that in mind, there are plenty of options for wallets to store cryptocurrency: desktop wallets, web wallets, hardware wallets and paper wallets. Choosing one depends on your preferences for convenience and security. Usually these two concepts are at odds with one another: the more convenient, the worse the security (and vice versa). Desktop wallets run on your PC or laptop. One option is to download an ethereum client (a copy of the entire ethereum blockchain). There are a few ethereum clients written in different programming languages and with different performance tradeoffs. This process can take up to a couple days, and will only increase as ethereum grows. The wallet then needs to stay in sync with the latest transactions on the blockchain. Mobile clients, or 'light' clients, require less data to be downloaded to Continue reading >>

Go Ethereum - Different Way Of Creating Account - Ethereum Stack Exchange

I have created one account using the command geth account new , name acc1 and another under the geth console using the command personal.newAccount() name it acc2. Now i am not able to see the acc1 using the command eth.accounts and acc2 using the command geth account list . Both accounts have been created on same node. Then why the data of both accounts have been synchronized between both consoles. What is the difference in both the ways of account creation? It happens. The reason is the datadir being used for creating the account. for the default datadir is used is "~/.ethereum/keystore"(it's on my ubuntu OS). You can go to that directory and see. There shall be one file of format "UTC--2017-02-13T07-14-57.563336682Z--your account". this is the account, which gets created when you do if you're running your private chain using geth, then you must have defined your own datadir while starting the geth console. so, when you do You simply do cp from the "~/.ethereum/keystore" to "datadir/keystore".you shall be able to see the accounts in the Now, if you want that your all future accounts, create using geth --datadir "**path to your data dir**" account new This shall create all the accounts, as per your private chain datadir. and you shall be able to see all the accounts. How To Create An Ethereum Account

How To Create An Ethereum Account

Today, well be learning about Ethereum accounts and the math behind creating one. To interact with Ethereum in any meaningful way, you need to have a user account. The simplest way to create an account on Ethereum is by using the Mist Ethereum wallet , which is an application that allows you to manage and interact with multiple Ethereum accounts. Launching the application will sync to the black chain, meaning it download the entire blockchain data to the blockchain, which can take upwards of 100 gigabytes, so be warned. When you first launch the application, it will walk you through creating an account and setting a password for it. Its very important that you never forget this password to maintain access to the account, there is no forgot your password option. Your new account then shows up in the wallet section of the app and it has a balance of zero. Clicking on the account will give us more details about it and provide some options for putting some real ether into it. The main thing to note is the public address, which you will share with other people. Another way to create an account is via the command line. If you download the Go Ethereum Client of GETH, can simply invoke GETH account new to create an account. This will prompt you to enter a password which again you should never forget and at the end it prints out the public address of your new account. You can create as many accounts as you like and you can view them all by typing GETH Account List. Note that this also shows the account we created in Ethereum Wallet. Another interesting thing to note is that we dont even have to be connected to the blockchain or even the internet to create an account. It can happen entirely offline. How is this possible? We know what we need to generate a cryptographic key pair Continue reading >>

Typically, websites and apps use email addresses as digital identifiers in apps. These are paired with passwords or with OAuth to validate ownership. This creates many headaches including password management (bad for users and for developers, great for hackers) and including reliance on third party servers. However, it is now easy to ditch emails and passwords and instead provide a more elegant, safer, and simpler option. Many more online users are creating Ethereum accounts every day. These accounts can 'securely sign' in order to prove their identity using a web3.js function called personal_sign. This can be used as the basis for an authentication system for websites; one that doesn't even need to talk to the blockchain or to an API but can rely simply on mathematics (similar to SSL key authentication but managed by metamask). Allow users to authenticate themselves to your websites and apps without relying on passwords and without relying a centralized corporation such as Google, Twitter or Facebook. Instead, users can use an Ethereum account that they control. Those users will need to use a plugin such as Metamask or a browser such as Mist in order to authenticate themselves in this way. Any web3 enabled browser will work. There are many advantages including: No need to locally store user passwords, only sessions No need to include 'reset password' functions No need to store API keys for Oauth services No reliance on an external corporation whose API could go down at any time, grinding your app to a halt Codepen for buttons: Sample implementation: (client side only) This methodology uses a button to call the web3 'personal sign' function. This sends a challenge to the browser (metamask/mist) and a popup will appear for the user which they can choose to Accept/Sign. Continue reading >>

ICO 101: how to participate in an ICO made withEthereum Theres a lot of hype around cryptocurrencies and ICOs as it continues to grow exponentially every day, even experts couldnt predict where it is today. Quite a few of them seem attractive, but imagine I didnt know anything about cryptocurrency, wallets, and ethereum. I mean, nothing at all. I will participate in the ICO of a mobile MMORPG called Lordmancer II (their site is lordmancer2.io . My goal was to get familiar with the whole idea of an ICO, go through all the steps, and have some fun in the process. For the purpose of this article the exact ICO doesnt matter, the process will be the same for any. Lets take this article as a general tutorial. Let me remind you what an ICO is. The acronym stands for Initial Coin Offering, a mock-up of Initial Public Offering. Nowadays, any startup can issue its own currency, usually called tokens or coins, using blockchain technology. These tokens may be bought, sold, or exchanged for another cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin, Ether, or for fiat (read: normal) currencies. The main goals for the issuer of the tokens or coins is to fund their project development, marketing, and help increase demand, which will then increase the value of the tokens. The final goal of the individuals who purchase tokens is to use them to exchange/buy/sell individual goods and items, or do what most people do and wait until their price has skyrocketed and then sell them for a HUGE PROFIT.Hopefully. There are various business models designed to make the tokens more valuable with time. As for Lordmancer II , the price for their tokens will continue to grow because there will be always be an increase in demand for tokens from their players, and theres a limited amount of tokens. Besides that, they also Continue reading >>
