This Man Has Made More Money Trading Cryptokitties Than Investing In His Ira

This man has made more money trading cryptokitties than investing in his IRA CryptoKitties, a game where users breed and trade digital kitties using Ethereum-based smart contracts, has emerged as the latest mark of societys obsession with rising cryptocurrency values. In some ways, the popularity of the game reflects the skyrocketing values of digital currencies like Bitcoin and Ether. Total sales on the platform created by Canadian startup Axiom Zen have reportedly hit $12 million, according to Coin Telegraph , as some cats with rare attributes have been sold for upwards of $80,000 . Cryptokitties are generated by code, and bred by spending Ether tokens on smart contracts that use two base cats to create a new one. Each resulting cat is unique and persistent, recorded on Ethereums public ledger. While the game has proven wildly popular, CryptoKitties has also been plagued by network slowdowns, little game progression and automated bots that snipe deals. Its also placing a new load on the currency itself. The game has slowed down the Ethereum network by as much as 11 percent, Motherboard reported last week. But as the first successful game built on the Ethereum network, CryptoKitties success has hinted at the greater potential of apps powered by blockchain technology and given rise to a new wave of cryptocurrency speculation. Like Bitcoin and Ethereum, CryptoKitties allowed speculators to make a lot of money if they got in at the right time. One of those speculators is Todd, who wished to remain anonymous in order to disclose personal financial details. While we talked, the CryptoKitties site dipped in and out of commission. Todd is a 30-year-old entrepreneur and software designer from Austin, Texas. Hes also been the owner of 35 cryptokitties , an extension of his bro Continue reading >>

People Have Spent Over $1m Buying Virtual Cats On The Ethereum Blockchain

People have spent over $1M buying virtual cats on the Ethereum blockchain Launched a few days ago, CryptoKitties is essentially like an digital version of Pokemon cards but based on the Ethereum blockchain. And like most viral sensations that catch on in the tech world, its blowing up fast. Built by Vancouver and San Francisco-based design studio AxiomZen , the game is the latest fad in the world of cryptocurrency and probably soon tech in general. People are spending a crazy amount of real money on the game. So far about $1.3M has been transacted , with multiple kittens selling for ~50 ETH (around $23,000) and the genesis kitten being sold for a record ~246 ETH (around $113,000). This third party site tracks the largest purchases made to date on the game. And like any good viral sensation prices are rising and fluctuating fast. Right now it will cost you about .03 ETH, or $12 to buy the least expensive kitten in the game. So now we have people using Ether, an asset with arguably little tangible utility to purchase an asset with unarguably zero tangible utility. Welcome to the internet in 2017. In all seriousness, its a little bit reminiscent of the beanie baby trend where people were paying insane amounts of money for stuffed animals. But if the popularity continues to increase these people may be able to make a return by reselling or breeding their rare kittens, or theyll be stuck holding the virtual cryptographic keys to a virtual rare kitten when the market crashes in a few day, like eventually happened with beanie babies. There are a few cool things about the game though, and putting aside the valuation absurdity its actually a cool way for beginners to interact with the Ethereum blockchain. First off, its important to understand that since its played on the Ethere Continue reading >>

Ethereum Game Cryptokitties Now Has Some Serious Rivals

Ethereum Game CryptoKitties Now Has Some Serious Rivals Feb 17, 2018 at 10:00 UTC|UpdatedFeb 19, 2018 at 10:25 UTC Some people just aren't that into digital cats. Once the only major ethereum application (or dapp ) to see a large number of users trading " crypto collectables ," CryptoKitties is seeing new competition from projects seeking to issue their own tradable code on the blockchain. Zombies, countries - even crypto celebrities - are now creating whole new markets for exchangeable goods. Indeed, earlier this week, more than $10 million in ether was documented to be circulating within ethereum games, according to data collected by DappRadar . "If 2017 was the year of the ICOs on ethereum, 2018 is the year of the crypto games on ethereum," Iuri Matias, developer of ethereum dapps framework Embark, tweeted . Maybe it should be no surprise, since the items being traded have produced incredible price tags. For instance, the most expensive cats on CryptoKitties are currently worth 100,000 ETH per cat, or $93.4 million at today's prices. Simon Powell, developerof CryptoCountries, one of the games garnering a significant amount of attention, told CoinDesk: "We're in the middle of the crypto gaming craze." And while CryptoKitties is still, by far, the most successful game according to transaction count, it has markedly ebbed since its peak in December. Entering February, some alternatives are attracting higher volumes. Here are the top-grossing games giving CryptoKitties a scare. The slick interface and money-making potential of CryptoCountries puts it first in line as the top-grossing ethereum game today. Billed as offering "world domination on the blockchain," the game allows users to purchase countries on a digital map in what amounts to a twist on the board game class Continue reading >>

You've heard there's a new kitty-related crypto fad in town, and you want in on the action. This is exactly what you're looking for. In this article, we'll explain how to play CryptoKitties , the game that's taking the world by storm (and earning some people a fair amount of money). SEE ALSO: Cryptokitties is Ethereum's hit game, but it's threatening the entire network CryptoKitties is a digital goods trading game that lives on the Ethereum blockchain. It lets you purchase, trade, and breed digital kittens. The game has no straightforward "goal" you can simply buy a digital kitten, and it will eternally be yours due to the nature of blockchain technology. However, kittens come with different visual features, called traits, and some of these traits are rarer than others. Naturally, most users are trying to breed rare cats, not only because they look cool, but also because they can be very expensive; one particularly rare cat was recently sold for more than a hundred thousand dollars. In fact, the total kitten sales so far are around $3 million dollars ; pretty impressive given the game launched last week. Before we go on any further, please note that this game requires ether (the currency of Ethereum) to play, which can be converted into real money, and that it can get expensive fast (though it can also be lucrative if you play your kittens right). It also resembles a bit of a pyramid structure, meaning that early adopters were able to buy rare kittens cheaper than you probably will be able to. Finally, the game is currently putting quite a strain on Ethereum's network, and if this becomes a serious proble Continue reading >>

Meet Cryptokitties, The $100,000 Digital Beanie Babies Epitomizing The Cryptocurrency Mania

Someone spent $114,000 on a virtual kitten that runs on blockchain So states the FAQ for CryptoKitties, a new game for collecting, breeding and selling digital cats that is so popular, it is clogging up the network of digital currency ethereum . Players have spent the equivalent of $6.7 million and counting buying CryptoKitties, which can sell for as much as $114,481.59, according to third-party research from developer Niel de la Rouviere . The median price of a kitten is $25.04. Just three days ago, the site had logged about $1.3 million in sales . "The popularity of virtual cats fits the euphoria we see elsewhere in the crypto-currency space," Peter Atwater, who studies market sentiment and heads Financial Insyghts, said in an email. "It feels very reminiscent of the Candy Crush craze that helped propel the King Entertainment IPO back at the peak of the 'Unicorn' era in mid 2014." Created by Vancouver-based Axiom Zen, CryptoKitties launched to 200 users on Thanksgiving and was opened to the public last Tuesday. More than 41,000 unique kittens have been sold already, according to de la Rouviere's data. But CryptoKitties' popularity indicates blockchain technology still has a long way to go to reach its hype. CryptoKitties accounted for about 13.5 percent of power on the ethereum network Wednesday morning, said Benjamin Roberts, co-founder and CEO of Citizen Hex, an ethereum-focused start-up backed by three Canadian venture funds. "With Cryptokitties every Ethereum user has suddenly taken on the computational overhead of running a mainstream application," Roberts said in an email. "This overhead affects not only Cryptokitty transactions, but every other transaction on the Ethereum network." Ethereum Cryptokitties: By Thenumbers

Ethereum Cryptokitties: By Thenumbers

These cute little bastards are clogging up the Ethereum blockchain . Why? Because people are trading them for thousands of dollars. Lets take a look. There are over 37,000 crypto kitties currently in existence at time of writing. Each Kitty has a unique ID and its own public page on the domain. For example: heres a cat that sold for over $100,000 on December 2nd, 2017. Theres a game mechanic that allows you to breed Kitties, producing new ones which can then be sold. They are basically breedable Beanie Babies. The Kitties, of course, are tracked on the Ethereum blockchain . I read the white pa-purr and found out that they created the so called ERC-721 protocol to track the Kitties: Heres the github page where the protocol is defined: Update (Nov 9, 2017): The most recent proposal can be found in this comment. Preamble EIP: Title: Non-fungible Tokengithub.com The market cap is 6 million as of time of writing. Yes, this is real USD money thats been used to buy these things. Well actually, the Kitties are purchased with ether. In this post, we quantify the cost of each Kitty by using the USD valuation of the transacted ether on the purchase date. 90% of them have sold for less than 100 bucks. But on the other hand, some have sold for insane amounts of money. Here are the most expensive Crypto Kitties: Those the top 10 total to over $800,000. Shifting our attention to the majority of the distribution, we see they are predominantly sold for less than 50 bucks. Still a lot to pay for a useless digital asset. We can eyeball that about 80% cost less than $50. It turns out the most expensive Kitty so far is the first one ever created, labelled with ID = 1. Its no surprise that this Kitty is the most sought after. Lets look at the price of the top 10 Kitties by ID. Theres certai Continue reading >>

Will It Mutate? - The Odds Of Mutation

Will It Mutate? - The Odds Of Mutation

Kitties have four genes for each cattribute. There is one dominant gene (which is expressed) and three recessive genes. When two cats breed, they each pass forward a gene to compete for their offsprings dominant gene. If those genes are neighboring genes, there is a chance they will mutate and the kitten will get an entirely different gene. First, the parents each pass forward a gene. Second, there is a chance for mutation. Lets look at an example. Pretend you have a purebred fabulous and a purebred raisedbrow. Since the parents have the same gene in all four spots, the sire is 100% guaranteed to pass forward the fabulous gene and the dame is 100% guaranteed to pass forward the raisedbrow gene. Fabulous and raisedbrow are neighboring genes and have a 25% chance of mutation to wingtips.* So if you bred these two cats together, you would have a 25% chance of getting a kitten with wingtips (and a 37.5% chance of fabulous, and a 37.5% chance of raisedbrow). But what if the parents were not purebred? What if their genes looked more like this? A cat has a 75% chance of passing forward its dominant gene, so there is a 75% chance this sire will pass forward fabulous and a 75% chance this dame will pass forward raisedbrow. If that happens, then there is a 25% chance they will mutate.* 0.75 * 0.75 * 0.25 = 0.14 = 14% chance of wingtips But what if you don't have a fabulous-eyed cat? What if you just have a simple-eyed cat with a recessive fabulous gene? The probability that the sire will pass forward the recessive fabulous gene (R3) is only 1.5% (see chart below). So the odds of getting a wingtips from this pair is... BUT IT HAPPENS SOMETIMES! In fact, this is exactly how the first elk was created. His dad had Wild_3 in the R3 spot, his mom had Wild_4 in the D1 spot, they both g Continue reading >>

Guide To Buying Cryptokitties (ethereum Game)

Crypto, Products, and other Random Thoughts Guide To Buying CryptoKitties (Ethereum Game) howto games blockchain ethereum guide crypto cryptokitties CryptoKitties launched in late Nov 2017, and within a week it had taken the world by storm , flooding the Ethereum transaction network and generally causing a ruckus as kitties are wont to do. This post will give you a brief introduction to the beanie babies (/neopets) of this generation, and a step-by-step guide on how to get your very own CryptoKitty. Prepare to get your paws wet! There's tons to learn in this post. To help you remember, check out my app Harvest: Take Notes and Learn Passively . It uses a memory algorithm called spaced repetition to help you remember notes just like this summary : CryptoKitties are digital cats that live purely on the Ethereum blockchain ( refresher on blockchain ). They are collectibles that you can buy, sell, and best of all, breed to create new kitties. When you own a kitty, no one can take it away from you (not even the CryptoKitty company) since your Ethereum address owns it and only you have the private key. The whole point of CryptoKitties is not only that they are beautiful digital kitties that you can admire and collect (maybe this is the whole point); you can also breed any two kitties together and create an entire unique new kitty, with its own " cattributes " and name. CryptoKitties are each part of a "Generation" which just means that the kitties that were magically created and without parents are "Generation 0" and every subsequent breeding from these kitties are "Generation +1" of the youngest of the parents. Generation 0 + Generation 0 = Generation 1 "Cattributes" (cat attributes) are what uniquely define a kitty. These describe everything about your kitty, including colo Continue reading >>

I Bred 'crypto Kitties' On The Ethereum Blockchain

I Bred 'crypto Kitties' On The Ethereum Blockchain

I Bred 'Crypto Kitties' on the Ethereum Blockchain CryptoKitties wants to make blockchain tech fun. Trying to explain Ethereum to someone who is unfamiliar with the topic is a bit like administering anesthesia. You start by explaining a blockchain and their eyes slowly glaze over. By the time you've gotten to smart contracts and ICOs , they're slack jawed and drooling all over the place. When you're finished and they regain consciousness, they won't remember a thing. This is all to say that learning about and using Ethereummost succinctly described as a distributed computing platform based on a public ledgercan be unbelievably dull. In a bid to make blockchain technology fun, a Canadian tech company called Axiom Zen has created CryptoKitties , a game where players breed and trade cats using smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain. "Kitties should be a part of this revolution of bringing blockchain technology to the masses," Benny Giang, a product manager at Axiom Zen told me in an email. "So many great companies are building awesome technology that the world won't care about or understand. We're the flag bearer for the rest of this ecosystem in terms of getting celebrities to associate with kitties and the Ethereum network." A test version of CryptoKitties was unveiled last weekend at ETH Waterloo, the largest Ethereum hackathon in the world. It was accompanied by a breeding competition that challenged participants to breed digital kittens with certain physical traits and rewarded breeders with real Ether (the digital money that powers apps on the Ethereum network). As a cat-lover with an interest in Ethereum , when I heard about the project I thought I'd try my hand at breeding a few crypto kitties of my own. CryptoKitties will be officially released on November 1, Continue reading >>

Cats Went Crypto First, Now It's Time for Consumers Jan 3, 2018 at 05:09 UTC|UpdatedJan 4, 2018 at 13:42 UTC Arthur Camara is a co-founder of CryptoKitties, created by Canadian innovation studio Axiom Zen, where he focuses on product and engineering to help bring blockchain technology to the masses. The following article is an exclusive contribution to CoinDesk's 2017 in Review . I admittedly wasn't investing in any cryptocurrency in the early 2010s. By this time last year, I was reading CoinDesk's 2016 Year in Review , just starting to fully grasp what the power of distributed ledgers and decentralized networks could mean for our future and our society. And despite all that, I am now standing alongside a team who are pioneering entrepreneurship and innovation in the blockchain space. Don't let this year's unprecedented growth in the crypto community fool you. We are not late to the party, we are very early -- we're still the Neil Armstrongs of our time, especially if we focus our efforts in the right places. What we've seen in 2017 is just a sneak peak of what's coming. The new year will bring a lot more talent, more revolutionary ideas and new cats to the blockchain. We'll also see a whole bunch of new consumers as well. A few weeks ago we launched CryptoKitties , a game where users can buy, collect, breed and sell genetically unique, digital cats on the blockchain. Technically speaking, they are non-fungible tokens on the ethereum network that implement the ERC-721 token standard proposal, recently created by our technical architect and co-founder Dieter Shirley. On the outside, however, they are adorable digital kittens with unique combinations of traits, brought to users through a high-quality user interface that allows users to interact with CryptoKitties' smart Continue reading >>

Cryptokitties: How One Digital Cat Was Flipped For $60,000 Over Four Days Quartz

Keynes was onto something when he wrote about the animal spirits that animate the economy. The CryptoKitties game, which lets players trade digital kittens on the ethereum blockchain, continues to dominate traffic on the cryptocurrencys network. Over 6,000 players are buying, selling, and breeding the blockchain-based felinesand a few of them are making tons of money doing so, according to new data from the independent data site CryptoKitties Sales . The site recently added the ability to track the historical price of any kitten, which reveals the inner workings of the virtual cat trade. The sites creator, Niel De La Rouviere, picked a couple of kittens randomly that turned out to have interesting price histories. Each kitten has a number based on when it was first generated. Kitten number 23 was first traded for over $4,000 on Dec. 2. Two days later, it was sold on for over $32,000. Yesterday, a user named Its All About The Money paid about $63,000 for it, and its now one of the the most expensive cats for sale in that users stable. Its on offer for 240.12 ether , or about $106,000 at current prices. Here are De La Rouvieres picks, charted: Purr-fect returns. (Jason Karaian/Quartz) CryptoKitties players have already spent about $6.7 million since the game launched on Nov. 28, which averages out to nearly a million dollars in daily trading volume, according to data from CryptoKitties Sales. De La Rouviere is the founder of an ethereum project called StakeTree and started the site as a side project, pulling the data, which is public, from the ethereum blockchain. Hes not affiliated with the games developers, a company called Axiom Zen in Vancouver. De La Rouvieres site has generated 50,000 pageviews over the past 48 hours, a level of popularity that he says hes now feel Continue reading >>

Cryptokitties - Wikipedia

Cryptokitties - Wikipedia

CryptoKitties is a blockchain based virtual game developed by Axiom Zen that allows players to purchase, collect, breed and sell various types of virtual cats. It represents one of the earliest attempts to deploy blockchain technology for recreational and leisurely purposes. [1] The game's popularity in December 2017 congested the Ethereum network, causing for it to reach an all-time high in transactions and slow down significantly. [2] On March 20, 2018, it was announced that CryptoKitties would be spun off into its own company and raised $12 million from several top venture capital firms and angel investors. The investment round was led by New York based Union Square Ventures and San Francisco based Andreessen Horowitz . [3] [4] [5] Whereas CryptoKitties is not a cryptocurrency , it operates on Ethereum s underlying blockchain network, which offers something similar. Each CryptoKitty is unique and owned by the user, validated through the blockchain, and its value can appreciate or depreciate based on the market. CryptoKitties cannot be replicated, taken away, or destroyed. Users can interact with their CryptoKitties, having the ability to buy, sell, and sire (breed) them. A test version of CryptoKitties was unveiled at ETH Waterloo on October 19, 2017, the largest Ethereum hackathon in the world. As of December 2, Genesis, the first and highest selling cat was sold for 246.9255 ETH (~$117,712 USD) on that day. The virtual cats are breedable and carry a unique number and 256 bit distinct genome with DNA and different attributes (cattributes) that can be passed to offspring. [6] Several traits can be passed down including cool down time (how much time is required before a cat can breed), whiskers, fur color, eye shape, eye color and background color. [7] A CryptoKitty' Continue reading >>
