CryptoKitties is a collectible cat-breeding video game built on the Ethereum blockchain computer platform, allowing for digital scarcity. The game allows users to buy, sell, trade and breed digital cats with the intention of collecting the rarest kitties possible. Each kitty has a different set of attributes, with some of those characteristics being rarer than others. Within a week of launching users had already spent more than $6.7 million on the game. In September 2017, CryptoKitties launched its alph test at the ETHWaterloo. There it won the ETHWaterloo hackathon. [1] CryptoKitties launched on November 28th, 2017. [1] Within one week, the game garners more than 60,000 registered users and over $5 million in transactions. CryptoKitties allows users to breed, collect, buy and sell digital kittens. Because each CryptoKitty is unique, the combination of two characters can create rarities in the game, making those CryptoKitties more valuable. The game allows users to breed CryptoKitties to make new and more unique character designs. [3] [4] On December 5th, Vice News [6] published a report on the sudden popularity of CryptoKitties. The video (shown below) received more than 28,000 views in one week. CryptoKitties is the worlds first game built on blockchain technology. The use of blockchain, essentially, allows the digital cats to be 100% unique, much like a cryptocurrency . On December 6th, 2017, CNBC [2] reported that since launching one week prior, that users had spent the equivalent of $6.7 million on more than 41,000 unique kittens. That day, the game sold Founder Cat #18 for 253.3368 (Ether) or $110, Continue reading >>

Article: In Defense of CryptoKitties by Richard Chen (Blockchain analyst at 1confirmation. Stanford CS) great articles yes it,s possible crypto games like cryptokitties and crypto collectables like cryptopunks could be a huge market in the coming years but a lot of new games are coming new competition axies is getting popular it,s the next generation blockchain game. cryptokitties has to come with new features if it,s doesn,t want to lose market share in the coming months FYI: Find (more) commentary about the "In Defense of CryptoKitties" article in the hacker news post @ . A lot of good points here, I think it depends on the perception though Its not fun and expensive just because you decided to get as much fancies as possible, if you dont like the process that much why not let other people spend their money? If someone wanted to monopolize the fancy but as the result have no money and a lot of cats no one wants to buy for more than the breeding fee, maybe its a lesson not to be greedy and not to rush next time? If you believe the fancies are special and should worth more, just hodl, right? The problem is actually similar to any other kind of cats in the game, people breed more than they can sell, then start undercuting each other and complaining :) Its a game, the most players will spend more than they will ever earn, so maybe we just should adjust our expectations? I also believe that prepared players should have advantage, it will support players how dont want to hurry and focus on exact trait instead You can buy purebreds relatively cheap when there is no demand for them, get few of each trait - you will support the game economy and be better prepared for the next fancy/mewtation My hope is that with the new fancies, they utilize later GEN's. Before reading this post, you should know how to read a kittys genes . Each trait in CryptoKitties has a mutation pair that, when bred together, gives a small chance (usually 14%) of generating a brand new trait not necessarily seen in either parent. Those new traits are referred to as mutations. After a gene mutates, it may then be passed on to offspring the same way as basic traits. Because Gen 0 cats only have basic traits, mutations tend to be rare at low generations, so they are often (but not always) more valuable. (Note: Mutations are separate from the recessive genes that have a chance to gene swap into the dominant position.) From a technical point-of-view, mutations occur when pairs of neighboring genes (e.g. 00010 & 00011) are bred together. If they mutate, the mutation takes the gene with a 1 at the end and moves it to the beginning (e.g. 00011 > 10001). You dont really need to know that, though. You can just use the following method. In the chart below, you can see that topaz and mintgreen are a neighboring pair. In the right-hand column, it says they mutate into gene i. Find i in the kai column and trace it back to eye color. Topaz and mintgreen have the potential to mutate into limegreen. To find all possible mutations, please see our updated Trait Chart . Kitties have four genes for each cattribute. There is one dominant gene (which is expressed) and three recessive genes. When two cats breed, they each pass forward one of those four genes to compete for their offsprings dominant gene. At that point, there is an opportunity for mutation and the kitten may get an entirely different gene. First, the parents each pass forward a gene. If theyre neighboring genes, there is a chance for mutation. Heres an example. Pretend you have a purebred raisedbrow-eyed ca Continue reading >>

Each trait has a mutation pair that, when bred together, has a small chance of mutating into a completely different gene. Heres a guide on how to find all possible mutation combinations, even for non-visible genes and newly-released traits. First, we need the Trait Chart . The Trait Chart shows all the discovered traits and their corresponding genetic codes. When a new trait is discovered, we simply look at the cats genes to see what code the new trait maps to. Look at the chart. Do you see how the traits are divided into pairs? Each pair of neighboring genes can mutate. What do they mutate to? Look at the right-hand column that says mutates to. It tells you what kai code the pair has potential to mutate into. For example, otaku+simple mutates to eye type j, which is fabulous eyes. When a new trait is released, you can immediately tell 1) what it will mutate with, and 2) where the new mutation will fall. For example, once we see eye type 1 released, we know that you can breed it with wonky and that it will mutate into eye type h. AND THEN eye type h can be bred with alien to mutate into eye type q. AND THEN eye type q can be bred with wingtips to mutate into eye type u, which will be a tier-3 mutation!! Ahhh. Beautiful, valuable mutation cascades. You gotta love em. To learn more about mutations, visit THIS POST for a full explanation (including probabilites). Also, to increase the value of your cats, try to stack mutations. Find a breeding partner for your kitty to maximize your odds by using this Mutation Match-Up tool . What makes some CryptoKitties more valuable than others? Why do some kitties plummet in value while others dont? How can you tell ahead of time? Kitties get their value from two things: RARITY and DESIRABILITY. If a cat can maintain both over time, i Continue reading >>

Since the game launched, more than 200,000 players have already signed up and the overall value of the kitties is more than $20 million in ether. The game is set to be mobile-friendly (only iOS for now) Axiom Zen has partnered with Animoca Brands, a games developer from Hong Kong. Scaling the system so Ethereum can handle the traffic is the pressure-point. A team out of Vancouver launched their colourful virtual game called CryptoKitties on the Ethereum Blockchain introduced in November of 2017. Branded as Collectable. Breedable. Adorable. these felines look vibrant, playful, cute and valuable. In fact, the most expensive cats in the game have been sold for a whopping 100,000 ETH per cat which is about $95 million currently (some are now worth $290,000). Created by blockchain company Axiom Zen based in Vancouver, CryptoKitties look colourful and cute, and they serve a value-driven purpose but how exactly does this system function? Heres an in-depth look into what makes CryptoKitties tick. When it comes to solving non-linear optimisation issues, a genetic algorithm is a good bet. The basic functioning of genetic algorithms is the same as biological genetics. The process of selection ensures that only the parents best suited for survival are selected for reproduction so as to pass on their well-performing genes. The second step is a crossover or siring wherein the common qualities or genetic similarities between two parents are retained and passed on to the child. In the world of CryptoKitties, this means that the GA (Genetic Algorithm) to create a new cat comes from a child genome that is created by crossing over two parent kitties. The last step is that of mutation wherein some of the variable from the parents are randomly mutated. This is necessary in the virtual worl Continue reading >>

What Is Cryptokitties? A Beginners Guide On The Blockchain Collectible Cats

What is CryptoKitties? A Beginners Guide on the Blockchain Collectible Cats What is CryptoKitties? A Beginners Guide on the Blockchain Collectible Cats Last December, a new game became a trending fad in the blockchain world. Collectible CryptoKitties allowed users to buy, own, and trade unique, adorable cartoon cats on the blockchain. Around the time of launch, CryptoKitties was so successful that it slowed the Ethereum network. Just a few days after launch, users had already spent over $1 million on these collectible cats. The cool thing about CryptoKitties is theyre a demonstration. Of course, theyre fun and cute on their own. However, they also show the potential of blockchain for trading and securing digital assets. This was the driving principle behind the creation of CryptoKitties. In the white paper, the founders discuss the narrow focus of most blockchain projects on payments. Ultimately, they hoped CryptoKitties would help people expand their vision of what a blockchain could do. Most blockchain projects launch with a cryptocurrency. These are tradable tokens that represent some utility value in a project or even a share in a company. Token offerings have become an incredibly successful fundraising device for new startups. In some cases, too successful as projects with minimal expertise or roadmap can raise millions of dollars. CryptoKitties are not a currency. Instead, theyre blockchain assets. Theyre structured similarly to most other tokens. However, they have one major difference. Each CryptoKitty is unique, and theyre not meant to be fungible. Fungibility is key for a currency. It means that a dollar is a dollar, no matter where you got it, what year it was minted, or where it has been before you received it. They have value because we agree on their valu Continue reading >>

Cryptokitties Broke Ethereum. Heres Why They Would Thrive On Enjincoin

Gaming Network & Smart Cryptocurrency for Gaming CryptoKitties Broke Ethereum. Heres Why They Would Thrive on EnjinCoin CryptoKitties have clogged the network. Enjin Coins original architecture is designed to solve thisproblem. Unfortunately, Ethereum platform is having a bit of trouble with handling CryptoKitties. The game accounts for more than 10% of the activity on Ethereum blockchain, the network is clogged, and the team behind the game had to resort to increasing the gas price in order to keep the game stable. Enjin Coin was mentioned on VentureBeat as a project that aims to fix this and take gaming to the next level, so we felt a need to explain how we solved this problem. The Enjin Coin platform is optimized for low gas fees and fast response in modern video games, and would allow building rich games like CryptoKitties without the associated network problems. Contract storage is the most costly operation that can be performed on Ethereum. Enjin Coins philosophy is to have a rich client and minimal blockchain. Games using Enjin Coin items will not suffer from high gas fees, because all the metadata for items is handled by the games themselves. The blockchain only needs to maintain the smallest necessary amount of data needed to validate a players ownership. We were the first to pioneer the concept of a monolithic token contract , and this idea is now being used in games like CryptoKitties and their proposal for an ERC-721 standard. In our design , all tokens are stored in a single smart contract, which drastically reduces the fees associated with deploying new tokens. Almost every ERC-20 token on Ethereum today is bloating the blockchain and making it more expensive to use, because up to 99% of token code is redundant. Our innovative solution was to re-use all s Continue reading >>

Cryptokitties: The Tech Behind Thecraze

Kitties have officially taken over the blockchain. Several articles have been written about the kitty phenomena and they have received significant mainstream exposure as well. In fact, even Vitalik Buterin has gotten in on the act! So, just to give you a very brief idea , cryptokitties is one of the first games that has been created on the blockchain. The idea is to breed, collect and hold digital kitties. The game was made by Vancouver based blockchain company Axiom Zen . Like I have said before, there have been many articles written on the topic and that you can checkout. In this article, we are going to look under the hood. We are going to see the nuts and bolts that powers this whole system. Also I want to aPAWlogise in advance for all the cat puns (it has begun already hasnt it?). Genetic algorithm is an optimisation technique used to solve non-linear optimisation problems. It works pretty much the way biological genetics works. It starts with an initial generation of candidate solutions that have been tests against the objective function. The algorithm then generates subsequent solutions from these parent solutions using bio-inspired operators like: selection, crossover, and mutation. While the genes inside our body consists of proteins and various other elements, in GA they are represented via numbers. So lets take a look at how evolution works using genetic algorithm. We will only be using binary cases i.e. cases where the genes can be represented as 1s and 0s. Selection: Selection basically means retaining the best performing parents from one generation to the next. These well-performing parents are the ones that are preferred for reproduction. So eg. the two parents chosen via selection are: Cryptokitties uses the Genetic Algorithm to create a new kitty. It u Continue reading >>

Cryptokitty Genetik

Cryptokitty Genetik

Will It Mutate? - The Odds Of Mutation

Will It Mutate? - The Odds Of Mutation

Kitties have four genes for each cattribute. There is one dominant gene (which is expressed) and three recessive genes. When two cats breed, they each pass forward a gene to compete for their offsprings dominant gene. If those genes are neighboring genes, there is a chance they will mutate and the kitten will get an entirely different gene. First, the parents each pass forward a gene. Second, there is a chance for mutation. Lets look at an example. Pretend you have a purebred fabulous and a purebred raisedbrow. Since the parents have the same gene in all four spots, the sire is 100% guaranteed to pass forward the fabulous gene and the dame is 100% guaranteed to pass forward the raisedbrow gene. Fabulous and raisedbrow are neighboring genes and have a 25% chance of mutation to wingtips.* So if you bred these two cats together, you would have a 25% chance of getting a kitten with wingtips (and a 37.5% chance of fabulous, and a 37.5% chance of raisedbrow). But what if the parents were not purebred? What if their genes looked more like this? A cat has a 75% chance of passing forward its dominant gene, so there is a 75% chance this sire will pass forward fabulous and a 75% chance this dame will pass forward raisedbrow. If that happens, then there is a 25% chance they will mutate.* 0.75 * 0.75 * 0.25 = 0.14 = 14% chance of wingtips But what if you don't have a fabulous-eyed cat? What if you just have a simple-eyed cat with a recessive fabulous gene? The probability that the sire will pass forward the recessive fabulous gene (R3) is only 1.5% (see chart below). So the odds of getting a wingtips from this pair is... BUT IT HAPPENS SOMETIMES! In fact, this is exactly how the first elk was created. His dad had Wild_3 in the R3 spot, his mom had Wild_4 in the D1 spot, they both g Continue reading >>

I'm Little Afraid Of All The Cryptokitties Clonies That This Will Cause To Come ... | Hacker News

Addictive personalities can be good and can be evil. I have one and Im usually okay at recognizing that and when its kicking in and not losing self control, but Ive never had an opportunity to easily spend my cryptocurrency before and so I completely let myself fool myself about what I was doing when CK launched. I fell into a cycle of buying and breeding kitties at market rates, not wanting to sell them, finding great deals on the marketplace, buying and breeding those... Of course the great deals were really a crashing market after an unsustainable bubble right at launch. I was destroyed by incorrect mental pricing models and easy access to a source of funds. And whats more, those funds were internet magical funny money that Id gotten for free anyway, so it was really hard for me to see spending $40 worth of Ether as losing out on the opportunity to buy $40 worth of real world goods. And when the thought crossed my mind, I hand waved it away with the thought that I could always sell the kitties and get my ETH back, with no critical thinking attached. All of which begs the question, why am I a fan of the game? Theres the fact that I feel now like Ive invested a couple grand in the game ... but thats my irrational brain again. Some slightly more rational reasons include that working with the community to crack the genome and build tools to help make smart breeding and buying/selling choices has been a ton of fun and very educational. Also just deep diving into the game mechanics in a way I couldnt have truly appreciated from the outside looking in has been a revelation: many people complain that this is not much of a game, and of course theyre right, but theres still a ton of careful consideration that went into developing each aspect of what exists, including how new Continue reading >>

What Are Cryptokitties? Crash Course

What Are Cryptokitties? Crash Course

What Are Cryptokitties? Crash Course.Over the last year or so DAPPs aka Decentralised Applications have slowly gained a lot of steam. As you are probably aware of, a DAPP is not owned by any central organization and it represents a much-needed paradigm shift in an increasingly centralized world. However, for DAPPs to get the proper mainstream exposure they deserve, one of them had to break through and make it big. (Yes technically speaking Bitcoin is a DAPP as well, but we are not talking about store-of-value here). Sure, there have been several DAPPs before which got some exposure but something had to make it big and capture the publics imagination. Cryptokitties is a blockchain-based virtual game that allows players to adopt, raise, and trade virtual cats. The game was made by Vancouver based blockchain company Axiom Zen. However, what is truly important to remember is that this is the first known application of DAPP for leisure and recreation. Sales of Cryptokitties have been through the roof. People have spent more than twelve million dollars buying these cryptokitties. There are even reports of people who have made more money trading cyptokitties than investing in their IRA! Lets look at how many sales have been made per day: Several articles have been written about the kitty phenomena and they have received significant mainstream exposure as well. In fact, even Vitalik has gotten in on the act! Each kitty has its own unique 256-bit unique genome code. Which is carried down to all its descendent kitties via the use of Genetic Algorithm. The genetic algorithm is an optimization technique used to solve nonlinear optimization problems. It works pretty much the way biological genetics works. It starts with an initial generation of candidate solutions that have been te Continue reading >>
