Cryptokitties Craze Slows Down Transactions On Ethereum

CryptoKitties craze slows down transactions on Ethereum These are external links and will open in a new window A new craze for virtual kittens is slowing down trade in one of the largest crypto-currencies. CryptoKitties lets players buy and breed "crypto-pets" on Ethereum's underlying blockchain network. The game's developers told the Bloomberg news agency that CryptoKitties was a "key step" to making blockchains more accessible. But its popularity has underscored one of the technology's biggest downsides: its lack of scalability. Etherscan has reported a sixfold increase in pending transactions on Ethereum since the game's release, by the Axiom Zen innovation studio, on 28 November. "CryptoKitties has become so popular that it's taking up a significant amount of available space for transactions on the Ethereum platform," said Garrick Hileman, from the University of Cambridge. "Some people are concerned that a frivolous game is now going to be crowding out more serious, significant-seeming business uses." An estimated $4.5m (3.35m) has been spent on the cartoon cats at the time of writing, according to Crypto Kitty Sales . Image caption CryptoKitties is the first game built on Ethereum Think of these rather unpalatable cartoon kittens as unique digital Pokemon cards. The game's developers describe them as "breedable Beanie Babies", each with its own unique 256-bit genome. These crypto-collectibles are also gender-fluid, able to play the role of either the "dame" or the "sire" when bred together. The kitties' unique DNA can lead to four billion possible genetic variations. Some of the varieties created so far look lifelike, with grey striped fur and bulging green eyes. Others are speckled with neon-blue spots or magenta-patterned swirls. Image caption One of the less at Continue reading >>

Cryptokitties Moved More Than $12 Million Dollars In Cat Sales

Cryptokitties Moved More Than $12 Million Dollars In Cat Sales

The Ethereum-based digital card game, CryptoKitties , has processed more than $12 million dollars in sales. In this game, users can buy and sell cats with different attributes and features that sometimes reach really high prices. At UseTheBitcoin we explained how this game works and how much money it had moved. Just one week ago, $3 million dollars were spent in the platform. Today, more than $12 million dollars were moved. This is an incredible performance for such kind of game. For example, the most expensive cat named Founder Cat #18 , was sold for 253.33 ETH. This sale surpassed the last most expensive transaction set at 247 ETH. Several cats can be bought for more than $50,000 dollars. There have been different comments about this platform and whether this platform will be able to be sustained in the long term or not. A Decentralized Platform to Trade Digital Assets The cats that an individual owns in the platform are 100 percent owned by this individual and they cannot be replicated or destroyed. This is one of the main differences with other pet websites. These other games do not work with blockchain technology. That means that even when you believe that you are the owner of your pets, if the website is down or it closes, there is no real asset behind your pet. With the Ethereum network, different applications will allow individuals to exchange different assets without the necessity of providing information for strict Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti Money Laundering (AML) policies. Vitalik Buterin has commented about this game and way of exchanging assets: I actually like the digital cat games. They illustrate very well that the value of a blockchain extends far beyond applications that would literally get shut down by banks or governments if they did not use Continue reading >>

What's this all about, can you provide better information for some of us? I want nothing more than to be a bayonet; a bayonet wielded by the hand of God. And if this relic can transform me into such a thing...then I am happy to abandon my humanity. What's this all about, can you provide better information for some of us? CryptoKitties is one of the worlds first games to be built on blockchain technologythe same breakthrough that makes things like Bitcoin and Ethereum possible. Bitcoin and ether are cryptocurrencies but CryptoKitties are cryptocollectibles. You can buy, sell, or trade your CryptoKitty like it was a traditional collectible, secure in the knowledge that blockchain will track ownership securely. Just bought Kitty #411908 from you, all I got was a link of a screenshot of the cat. When should I expect the cat I bought to show up in my inventory? Well shit, is this like where sellers on eBay would post up a picture of an iPhone, and then cleverly hide in the description that people are bidding on pictures of the phone, and not the actual phone itself? Are you "AUTOSELLING" images of CryptoKitties? Or are you selling the CryptoKitties on the site themselves? I just got into CryptoKitties, and would like to see if there is a reputable 3rd party market for them, such as on the forums. Sounds fishy, to be honest, Continue reading >>

You've heard there's a new kitty-related crypto fad in town, and you want in on the action. This is exactly what you're looking for. In this article, we'll explain how to play CryptoKitties , the game that's taking the world by storm (and earning some people a fair amount of money). SEE ALSO: Cryptokitties is Ethereum's hit game, but it's threatening the entire network CryptoKitties is a digital goods trading game that lives on the Ethereum blockchain. It lets you purchase, trade, and breed digital kittens. The game has no straightforward "goal" you can simply buy a digital kitten, and it will eternally be yours due to the nature of blockchain technology. However, kittens come with different visual features, called traits, and some of these traits are rarer than others. Naturally, most users are trying to breed rare cats, not only because they look cool, but also because they can be very expensive; one particularly rare cat was recently sold for more than a hundred thousand dollars. In fact, the total kitten sales so far are around $3 million dollars ; pretty impressive given the game launched last week. Before we go on any further, please note that this game requires ether (the currency of Ethereum) to play, which can be converted into real money, and that it can get expensive fast (though it can also be lucrative if you play your kittens right). It also resembles a bit of a pyramid structure, meaning that early adopters were able to buy rare kittens cheaper than you probably will be able to. Finally, the game is currently putting quite a strain on Ethereum's network, and if this becomes a serious proble Continue reading >>

This Man Has Made More Money Trading Cryptokitties Than Investing In His Ira

This man has made more money trading cryptokitties than investing in his IRA CryptoKitties, a game where users breed and trade digital kitties using Ethereum-based smart contracts, has emerged as the latest mark of societys obsession with rising cryptocurrency values. In some ways, the popularity of the game reflects the skyrocketing values of digital currencies like Bitcoin and Ether. Total sales on the platform created by Canadian startup Axiom Zen have reportedly hit $12 million, according to Coin Telegraph , as some cats with rare attributes have been sold for upwards of $80,000 . Cryptokitties are generated by code, and bred by spending Ether tokens on smart contracts that use two base cats to create a new one. Each resulting cat is unique and persistent, recorded on Ethereums public ledger. While the game has proven wildly popular, CryptoKitties has also been plagued by network slowdowns, little game progression and automated bots that snipe deals. Its also placing a new load on the currency itself. The game has slowed down the Ethereum network by as much as 11 percent, Motherboard reported last week. But as the first successful game built on the Ethereum network, CryptoKitties success has hinted at the greater potential of apps powered by blockchain technology and given rise to a new wave of cryptocurrency speculation. Like Bitcoin and Ethereum, CryptoKitties allowed speculators to make a lot of money if they got in at the right time. One of those speculators is Todd, who wished to remain anonymous in order to disclose personal financial details. While we talked, the CryptoKitties site dipped in and out of commission. Todd is a 30-year-old entrepreneur and software designer from Austin, Texas. Hes also been the owner of 35 cryptokitties , an extension of his bro Continue reading >>

Ethereum Cryptokitties: By Thenumbers

Ethereum Cryptokitties: By Thenumbers

These cute little bastards are clogging up the Ethereum blockchain . Why? Because people are trading them for thousands of dollars. Lets take a look. There are over 37,000 crypto kitties currently in existence at time of writing. Each Kitty has a unique ID and its own public page on the domain. For example: heres a cat that sold for over $100,000 on December 2nd, 2017. Theres a game mechanic that allows you to breed Kitties, producing new ones which can then be sold. They are basically breedable Beanie Babies. The Kitties, of course, are tracked on the Ethereum blockchain . I read the white pa-purr and found out that they created the so called ERC-721 protocol to track the Kitties: Heres the github page where the protocol is defined: Update (Nov 9, 2017): The most recent proposal can be found in this comment. Preamble EIP: Title: Non-fungible Tokengithub.com The market cap is 6 million as of time of writing. Yes, this is real USD money thats been used to buy these things. Well actually, the Kitties are purchased with ether. In this post, we quantify the cost of each Kitty by using the USD valuation of the transacted ether on the purchase date. 90% of them have sold for less than 100 bucks. But on the other hand, some have sold for insane amounts of money. Here are the most expensive Crypto Kitties: Those the top 10 total to over $800,000. Shifting our attention to the majority of the distribution, we see they are predominantly sold for less than 50 bucks. Still a lot to pay for a useless digital asset. We can eyeball that about 80% cost less than $50. It turns out the most expensive Kitty so far is the first one ever created, labelled with ID = 1. Its no surprise that this Kitty is the most sought after. Lets look at the price of the top 10 Kitties by ID. Theres certai Continue reading >>

People Have Spent Over $1m Buying Virtual Cats On The Ethereum Blockchain

People have spent over $1M buying virtual cats on the Ethereum blockchain Launched a few days ago, CryptoKitties is essentially like an digital version of Pokemon cards but based on the Ethereum blockchain. And like most viral sensations that catch on in the tech world, its blowing up fast. Built by Vancouver and San Francisco-based design studio AxiomZen , the game is the latest fad in the world of cryptocurrency and probably soon tech in general. People are spending a crazy amount of real money on the game. So far about $1.3M has been transacted , with multiple kittens selling for ~50 ETH (around $23,000) and the genesis kitten being sold for a record ~246 ETH (around $113,000). This third party site tracks the largest purchases made to date on the game. And like any good viral sensation prices are rising and fluctuating fast. Right now it will cost you about .03 ETH, or $12 to buy the least expensive kitten in the game. So now we have people using Ether, an asset with arguably little tangible utility to purchase an asset with unarguably zero tangible utility. Welcome to the internet in 2017. In all seriousness, its a little bit reminiscent of the beanie baby trend where people were paying insane amounts of money for stuffed animals. But if the popularity continues to increase these people may be able to make a return by reselling or breeding their rare kittens, or theyll be stuck holding the virtual cryptographic keys to a virtual rare kitten when the market crashes in a few day, like eventually happened with beanie babies. There are a few cool things about the game though, and putting aside the valuation absurdity its actually a cool way for beginners to interact with the Ethereum blockchain. First off, its important to understand that since its played on the Ethere Continue reading >>

Cryptokitties: How One Digital Cat Was Flipped For $60,000 Over Four Days Quartz

Keynes was onto something when he wrote about the animal spirits that animate the economy. The CryptoKitties game, which lets players trade digital kittens on the ethereum blockchain, continues to dominate traffic on the cryptocurrencys network. Over 6,000 players are buying, selling, and breeding the blockchain-based felinesand a few of them are making tons of money doing so, according to new data from the independent data site CryptoKitties Sales . The site recently added the ability to track the historical price of any kitten, which reveals the inner workings of the virtual cat trade. The sites creator, Niel De La Rouviere, picked a couple of kittens randomly that turned out to have interesting price histories. Each kitten has a number based on when it was first generated. Kitten number 23 was first traded for over $4,000 on Dec. 2. Two days later, it was sold on for over $32,000. Yesterday, a user named Its All About The Money paid about $63,000 for it, and its now one of the the most expensive cats for sale in that users stable. Its on offer for 240.12 ether , or about $106,000 at current prices. Here are De La Rouvieres picks, charted: Purr-fect returns. (Jason Karaian/Quartz) CryptoKitties players have already spent about $6.7 million since the game launched on Nov. 28, which averages out to nearly a million dollars in daily trading volume, according to data from CryptoKitties Sales. De La Rouviere is the founder of an ethereum project called StakeTree and started the site as a side project, pulling the data, which is public, from the ethereum blockchain. Hes not affiliated with the games developers, a company called Axiom Zen in Vancouver. De La Rouvieres site has generated 50,000 pageviews over the past 48 hours, a level of popularity that he says hes now feel Continue reading >>

Cryptokitties Is An Ethereum Game That Puts Cartoon Cats On The Blockchain Quartz

CryptoKitties is significant because it has a chance of attracting players beyond the limited circle of cryptocurrency enthusiasts. As Ryan Hoover, the founder of product recommendation platform Product Hunt, noted, the game is like Pokmon on a blockchain, which bodes well for ethereum evangelists hoping for some of Pokmon Gos viral popularity. A modern day Pokemon with cats on the blockchain: pic.twitter.com/t7fwiSt3au Ryan Hoover (@rrhoover) November 29, 2017 CryptoKitties also offers a cuddly slant on the initial coin offering craze. The mechanics and goals of the two are similar, but in the case of CryptoKitties, offers genuine utility to the user upfront. For instance, most ICOs promise to build whatever technology they are pitching with a white paper (basically a lugubrious PDF). Investors send cryptocurrency to the ICO issuer and then wait for the tech to be built. In the meantime, the ICO may issue a token and allow investors to trade it, which gives rise to speculative prices around an unbuilt piece of technology. With CryptoKitties, the software is already functional. But people have to buy kittieswhich are sort of like tokensin order to participate. They can buy kitties from the developers themselves, or on the secondary market. In the latter case, the developers take a 3.75% cut. The CryptoKitties game, then, amounts to a sort of token sale, except the tokens are the kitties. The trading of kitties also generates the vaunted virtuous cycle that all ICOs promise: the more users pile into the system, the more valuable those tokens will be. This appears to be happening with CryptoKitties. CryptoKitties may not have the grand ambitions of other cryptocurrency projects, but by devising a mechanism thats fun and approachable, it may come closest to achieving thos Continue reading >>

How Can I Programmatically Get A Sales History Of Cryptokitties?

How Can I Programmatically Get A Sales History Of Cryptokitties?

The pages and show sales with prices and the IDs of the cats sold. How could I implement such a functionality programmatically? I've already searched GitHub but the code there does not allow to access such a sales history. I've also looked at the transaction details at but I do not get information about the cat ID there. The kitty auction contract emits an "AuctionSuccessful" event on each successful sale. You can get past events using web3.js with code that looks something like: var cksale = web3.eth.contract(saleAbi).at("0xb1690C08E213a35Ed9bAb7B318DE14420FB57d8C")cksale.getPastEvents('AuctionSuccessful', { fromBlock: 4605167 }, (error, events)=>{ console.log(`Got some sales: ${JSON.stringify(events)}`)}) Note: Cryptokitties was deployed on block 4605167 so no point in checking blocks earlier than that for events. It takes a while to search for past events, you'll probably be better off chunking it into 10/100 block intervals instead of trying to get all events in one giant call. Continue reading >>

Cryptokitties Sales Hit $12 Million, Could Be Ethereums Killer App After All

CryptoKitties Sales Hit $12 Million, Could be Ethereums Killer App After All CryptoKitties has processed more than $12 million in sales on its decentralized marketplace, shows potential for digital movement of assets. CryptoKitties , the Ethereum-based digital kitten collectibles game, has processed more than $12 million in sales on its decentralized marketplace. Essentially, CryptoKitties is a Tamagotchi-like game developed as a decentralized application ( dapp ) launched on top of the Ethereum protocol. Each digital kitten represents a unique crypto asset and the ownership of it cannot be altered, as it is integrated onto the immutable Ethereum Blockchain. According to Kitty Sales, five of the rarest digital kittens on the CryptoKitties platform were sold for over $100,000 each, with the most expensive digital kitten being sold at around $120,000. Some analysts and researchers have questioned the value of these digital kittens, and whether the platform itself is sustainable in the long-term. While the vast majority of CryptoKitties critics perceive the platform as a simple collectibles game, prominent venture capital investor, Andreessen Horowitz partner, and Earn.com CEO Balaji Srinivasan explained that CryptoKitties has demonstrated frictionless international trading of digital assets on a Blockchain at a large-scale. He believes the game has proven that assets can be traded in a decentralized manner without the involvement of intermediaries. Using the same mechanism and technology that CryptoKitties uses, a digital asset can be exchanged seamlessly, through a decentralized platform. If the CryptoKitties platform is evaluated as a peer-to-peer digital assets exchange, the technologys use case becomes more intriguing than a simple collectibles game. In the long-term Continue reading >>

Cryptokitties Is Causing Ethereum Network Congestion Quartz

Cryptokitties Is Causing Ethereum Network Congestion Quartz

The network congestion forced the games developers, a Vancouver company called Axiom Zen, to raise prices. This made processing the games transactions more attractive to ethereum miners, improving the odds of the transactions being accepted. Some $2.7 million has changed hands on the CryptoKitties marketplace in the six days it has been active, according to data from Crypto Kitty Sales. The developers of the game told Quartz it had 1,165 players on Dec. 1 (Update: the game has 6,600 active players as of Dec. 4, according to Benny Giang of Axiom Zen). Due to network congestion, we are increasing the birthing fee from 0.001 ETH to 0.002 ETH. This will ensure your kittens are born on time! The extra is needed to incentivize miners to add birthing txs to the chain. Long-term solution will be explored very soon! CryptoKitties (@CryptoKitties) December 3, 2017 To recap, a unique property of a blockchain-based game like CryptoKitties is the fact that the games collectibles are digital objects that dont depend on their issuer for their existence. This means that CryptoKitties developers could vanish tomorrow, but the kittens would still exist as smart contracts on the ethereum blockchain, with their current owners. This is in contrast to valuable collectibles in popular online games like Counterstrike or World of Warcraft, whose existence and ownership rely on the games publishers maintaining centralized servers storing those digital items. The popularity of CryptoKitties, and the resulting congestion on the ethereum network, lays bare the central challenge for blockchain architects: Decentralizing an application can potentially make it very valuable, as in the case of the immutable kittens in the game. Yet no one has yet designed a way to make these decentralized platforms de Continue reading >>

Meet Cryptokitties, The $100,000 Digital Beanie Babies Epitomizing The Cryptocurrency Mania

Someone spent $114,000 on a virtual kitten that runs on blockchain So states the FAQ for CryptoKitties, a new game for collecting, breeding and selling digital cats that is so popular, it is clogging up the network of digital currency ethereum . Players have spent the equivalent of $6.7 million and counting buying CryptoKitties, which can sell for as much as $114,481.59, according to third-party research from developer Niel de la Rouviere . The median price of a kitten is $25.04. Just three days ago, the site had logged about $1.3 million in sales . "The popularity of virtual cats fits the euphoria we see elsewhere in the crypto-currency space," Peter Atwater, who studies market sentiment and heads Financial Insyghts, said in an email. "It feels very reminiscent of the Candy Crush craze that helped propel the King Entertainment IPO back at the peak of the 'Unicorn' era in mid 2014." Created by Vancouver-based Axiom Zen, CryptoKitties launched to 200 users on Thanksgiving and was opened to the public last Tuesday. More than 41,000 unique kittens have been sold already, according to de la Rouviere's data. But CryptoKitties' popularity indicates blockchain technology still has a long way to go to reach its hype. CryptoKitties accounted for about 13.5 percent of power on the ethereum network Wednesday morning, said Benjamin Roberts, co-founder and CEO of Citizen Hex, an ethereum-focused start-up backed by three Canadian venture funds. "With Cryptokitties every Ethereum user has suddenly taken on the computational overhead of running a mainstream application," Roberts said in an email. "This overhead affects not only Cryptokitty transactions, but every other transaction on the Ethereum network." Blockchain project SophiaTX postponed its token sale by 48 hours this week to T Continue reading >>
