Game Maker Atari Is Planning To Launch Its Own Cryptocurrency

Game Maker Atari Is Planning to Launch Its Own Cryptocurrency The company behind iconic video games such as Pac-Man and Pong is planning to launch its own cryptocurrency, dubbed "Atari Token," according to an announcement last week. As part of the effort, Atari acquired a 15% stake in a Gibraltar-based company,Infinity Networks, Ltd and has licensed its brand to the firm. The partnership - which was previously hinted at in a December statement - will see the development of a digital entertainment platform underpinned by the so-called Atari Token. The game maker noted that its investment was "made without cash disbursement by Atari." "Our aim is to take strategic positions with a limited cash risk, in order to best create value with the assets and the Atari brand,"Atari chairman and CEO Frederic Chesnais said in a statement . The name selection is a notable one, given that Atari had previously created an Atari Token to serve as a currency for making in-game purchases. Whether the newly-announced Atari Token will serve that purpose remains to be seen. Additionally, Atari said that it plans to integrate cryptocurrencies via its branding partnership with Pariplay, Ltd, which offers online games using Atari games and characters as part of their design.Last week's statement also notably hints at the creation of a second token, which would be used in conjunction with the online casino plan. "To broaden the appeal of these new casinos, and once the Atari Token available, Atari has the project to launch Pong Token, a second token dedicated to crypto-casinos and usable on these gaming sites. The details of this launch of crypto-casinos will be announced soon," the statement (loosely translated) reads. As might be expected, the announcement has drawn comparisons - and not entirely Continue reading >>

How Could Blockchain Make Online Games Better?

How Could Blockchain Make Online Games Better?

Answered Jan 11, 2018 Featured on Hacker Noon Author has 52 answers and 132.8k answer views Back when I was in undergrad, I did my anthropology thesis on a video game called Second Life. Except it wasnt just a video game. It was a virtual world where peoples avatars lived, played, and worked. And just like in the real world, people needed a way to exchange value with each other. If someone sewed a virtual shirt, they wanted to be compensated for doing so. The solution? Linden Labs, the company behind the game, came up with a virtual currency that players could use within the gameand even exchange for real currency outside of the game. Today, we call that cryptocurrency. At the time, it was simply a way to compensate people or pay for goods and services within the game. At one point, Fatboy Slim even did a concert on one of the virtual islands and charged people to watch it. Now, theres a new virtual world project from Linden Labs called High Fidelity. And this time, theyre using blockchain to underpin their internal network currency. That really isnt too surprising, given that the gaming industry was one of the first places we saw the peer-to-peer behavior that makes up our current cryptocurrencies. While the gaming industry led the way in many respects, it might be revolutionized by the very technology it helped create. Heres how: The gaming industry has a long history of helping players exchange real value in a virtual world. Digital assets are nothing new, but our ability to exchange these various assets is growing. For instance, the CryptoKitties craze on Ethereums network is based around collecting and trading digital cats that hold real value. Its relatively new, yet Ethereum is already having problems with the volume of transactions. This volume will only increa Continue reading >>

What Could The Future Of Gaming Look Like With Blockchain Technology

What Could The Future Of Gaming Look Like With Blockchain Technology

Bitcoin is the word of the moment and given the rise in blockchain technology, which allows bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to exist, theres no surprise there. But theres one area that blockchain looks to massivelyimpact gaming. But what would blockchain technology bring to gaming and would people be interested in it? Blockchain technology refers to the digital ledger which records and verifies transactions of a cryptocurrency such as bitcoin. Each such record is encrypted, which allows for secure transactions on an open source foundation that is hard to spoof. The lack of a third party in the transaction means that the currency isnt subject to interest rates and other fees, meaning international trade can become easier, and cryptocurrency created from computer code is decentralized and monitored by a peer-to-peer computer protocol. The success of cryptocurrency, and the fact that Japan and Germany have made it legal tender shows the start of how we can use blockchain technology. The game Cryptokittiesruns on Ethereum blockchain . The game focuses on each chain creating a unique cat image, which can be bred with another unique image to create another unique cat. The cats themselves can become valuable, with one being sold for as much as $100,000. The kitties are collected and traded using cryptocurrency and resemble a modern version of collectible Pokemon trading cards or plush toy Beanie Babies. But CryptoKitties arent the only way you can engage with a collectible blockchain game Etheremon, CryptoCelebrities, HashPuppies and CryptoPets also utilize blockchain technology. While each game is still based on creating unique chains to trade, the scope for blockchain is vast. While the gaming technology is still in its early stages and games such as the ones above are y Continue reading >>

How Blockchain Technology Is Changing The Gaming Industry

How Blockchain Technology is Changing the Gaming Industry Blockchain Technology and Online Gaming: An Emerging Goldmine The world is unraveling new use cases for blockchain technology each day. Although most people think of Bitcoin and finance when they hear the word blockchain, the technology extends its reach far beyond those two things. You may already know that agriculture businesses , energy companies , and the art world are integrating blockchain into their operations. But, theres another unsuspecting sector also joining in: online gaming. Numerous cryptocurrency projects are picking up their controllers, so to speak, and some of the industrys biggest names are contributing their support. In this article, were going to tell you how blockchain technology is entering the over $50 billion online gaming market. Blockchain Technology is Facilitating True Virtual Goods Ownership Right now, fraud is rife in the virtual goods market. A lack of marketplace trust leads to segregated, centralized trading platforms who oftentimes charge excessive fees when you exchange your assets. Additionally, the abrupt shutdown of a gaming platform could cause your hard-earned goods to all of a sudden be worthless. Wax and Enjin Coin are two projects transforming this ownership of virtual goods, albeit in slightly different ways. WAX , which stands for Worldwide Asset eXchange, is a decentralized platform that you can use to build virtual marketplaces. Created by the OPSkins team, the platform uses WAX tokens to enable you to trade any virtual asset for cryptocurrency. Although theyre targeting online gaming, they state that you can tokenize any type of virtual good on the platform. Enjin Coin takes blockchain-based ownership one step further by creating and managing goods directly on th Continue reading >>

Game Protocol Uses Blockchain Technology To Create A Better Platform For Better Games

Game Protocol Uses Blockchain Technology to Create a Better Platform for Better Games Video games have grown tremendously over the past few years, but there is a need for a better platform to democratize development, and Game Protocol is aiming for that. Video games have been a favorite part of the American experience for more than 40 years. In the 1970s, video game technology was so bulbous that refrigerator-sized boxes lined arcade walls as kids eagerly participated in the technological wonderment. In a detailed expose on the arcades heyday, The Verge notes, The video game was one of continued controversy, growing attraction of games for young people, and innovation for the machines. Thats why it was such a big deal when, in 1977, Atari released the first console-sized video game for home consumption. The original Atari sold roughly 30 million units , and it sparked a movement that would make video gaming a ubiquitous part of the adolescent and adult experience. Today, popular gaming consoles including the PlayStation and Xbox platforms routinely sell 60 million units annually. More than 4/5 of American households own a device primarily intended as a gaming device. These platforms are joined by a robust community of PC gamers, and increasingly, mobile gaming is gaining market and mindshare. There is evidence that the total interactive media market which includes video games, eSports, gaming related video content, and VR/AR projects - nets more than $100 billion annually. According to data compiled by Statista , in 2017, the video game industry brought in $18.4 billion in the U.S. alone. Interestingly, while we are undeniably participating in the current heyday of video games, we are likely only witnessing the very beginning of the video game markets popularity and ca Continue reading >>

Have You Tried These Popular Blockchain Games?

Have You Tried These Popular Blockchain Games?

Have you tried these popular Blockchain Games? After the debacle of the dot com bubble and the sweeping reorganization that happened in the internet ecosystem, the modern-day web was born. As this web architecture began to unfold and take shape, virtual role-playing online games like World of Warcraft became a popular thing. History appears to go around in circles and it does seem like the internet is folding in on itself with respect to cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. As the emerging blockchain revolution takes form, a number of games have sprung up and have become vastly popular within the cryptocurrency community. At the heart of this emerging trend is the shift towards owning virtual objects generally classified as cryptocollectibles. These digital items have the potential to appreciate in value much like cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ether. This provides an incentive for users to become interested in the game as a means of getting their hands on what could turn out to be valuable digital assets. Cryptocollectibles are another startling example of the fact that just about anything can be created and issued on a blockchain. These games also expand the sphere of influence of the cryptocurrency ecosystem by creating new markets and encouraging greater participation. The following are some popular blockchain games. Cryptokitties is an Ethereum-based cryptocollectibles game that allows players to breed digital cats using smart contracts. Since its launch on Thanksgiving Day last year, Cryptokitties has gone on to become a hugely popular game on the Ethereum blockchain. Such is the popularity of the game that it caused major disruptions to the Ethereum network and caused delays in the implementation of a number of Ethereum-based cryptocurrency ICO smart con Continue reading >>

Bit.game: Creating A Potential Development Opportunity For Game Industry With Blockchain Technology

Bit.Game: Creating a Potential Development Opportunity for Game Industry with Blockchain Technology Bitcoinist.net March 24, 2018 10:00 am Until today, gaming has become an indispensable part of our lives. That means the constant and fast expansion of the game market in the world. From 2017, the blockchain technology began to sweep over almost every country. According to the newest report from Digi-Capital, a global analysis firm, the global game industrys hardware and software revenues would be between 165 and 170 billion dollars in 2018. In recent years, fast iterative and updating has made players needs much harder to satisfy. It is time to change. Therefore, the blockchain technology may be the next potential development opportunity. In the meanwhile, traditional game industry giants have been working on new Blockchain Games. In the overseas market, Blizzard and Ubisoft keep increasing the capital investment in Blockchain Game; in the domestic market, Neteases second Blockchain Game begins to its beta test and Tencent is establishing new supervision and credit system on the foundation of a present game platform through blockchain technology. At the same time, the Blockchain Game still has several problems such as single model and weak entertainment etc. Many game groups are difficult to invest their excellent productions and creativities in Blockchain Game because of the lack of R&D technology and talents. That causes the supply and demand contradiction between Blockchain Game market and players. Cognition and talents has become the obstacle to innovate from traditional game to Blockchain Game. BIT.GAME CEO Eric Sun said in an interview. BIT.GAME is a professional Blockchain Game platform service and technology provider. As a definition, blockchain is new-pattern a Continue reading >>

Blockchain Could Trigger The Game Industrys Next Evolution

Blockchain Could Trigger The Game Industrys Next Evolution

Technology is mostly incremental. We make batteries last 20 percent longer. We make glass strong enough to serve as the front surface of a cellphone. We let headphones sample ambient sounds so they can filter more noise. Products perform better. They cost less. They last longer. Sometimes a different sort of innovation comes along, a technology that serves as the platform for unanticipated breakthroughs. These innovations disrupt the status quo, toppling established market leaders and creating opportunities for a generation of creators: artists, technicians, leaders, or dreamers. The full implications of these major innovations are never fully grasped at first. A few visionaries get a glimpse and play a hand in the disruptive transformations that accompany the new technology. But disruptive technologies dont achieve full fruition until they are harnessed by a community of creative dreamers who use them to instantiate their creative visions. Thats where we stand today with blockchain . Blockchain is a data structure and associated set of algorithms for distributing, storing, and accessing data. Computer programs use blockchain protocols to ensure that access to information is, due to the unique distributed nature of the blockchain architecture, secure, authenticated, and authorized. The technology supports the authentication and transfer of digital data, including everything from medical records to cryptocurrency without the need for an intermediary broker. Thats why blockchain is ideal as the technical foundation for an international, friction-free virtual currency like Bitcoin or GAME . Every unit of cryptocurrency is indexed and every transaction is recorded in a secure, authenticated open ledger that maintains anonymity and privacy among those who conduct the transa Continue reading >>
