Twitter: The Top 10 Finance Hashtags Of 2018

As we near the end of 2018, Twitter has looked back on the year that was by revealing the most talked-about brands, hashtags, people and issues in Australia on the platform. They found Aussies took to Twitter to engage in a range of conversations, topics and movements, from popular Korean boy band #BTS, to political issues and a change of Prime Minister through #auspol and #libspill, as well as the sporting spectacles of the #WorldCup and #AusOpen. Taking a look at the hottest finance topics on the social media platform in Australia (based on how often each hashtag was used), cryptocurrency continued to reign supreme in 2018. Tags to Bitcoin, Blockchain, Ethereum and XRP (Ripple) all made the top 10 list, with investors discussing their predictions and summarising movements in the market. Twitter users (Twitterati? Twitterians?) kept up to date and shared breaking findings from one of the largest investigations our financial services sector has faced with the banking royal commission. We also saw what was important to Australians as they shared their thoughts on the release of the Federal Budget in May. The top 10 most frequently used finance hashtags on Twitter for 2018 were: Twitter found three of Australias big four banks topped the list of the nations most engaged brands on the platform in 2018, with National Australia Bank taking home the number one spot, ANZ coming in third and CommSec in ninth. So, what likely made Aussies tag and interact with @NAB, @ANZ and @CommSec in 2018? National Australia Bank (NAB) topped the list of most tweeted brands in Australia this year, beating out a range of other prominent labels such as Xbox Australia, Samsung, Apple and Telstra. People buy bitcoins for all sorts of reasons. They range from those seeking to invest in safe haven assets in the face of political instability, speculators wanting to ride the wave of what some regard to be an asset bubble, to purchasers who want to purchase illegal goods anonymously on the dark web. Since mid-2010, when the highly-volatile currency was worth just 9 cents, it has surged by more than 4 million per cent. When you add the value of every bitcoin, its current market capitalisation is $49.6 billion - almost half of the value of all cryptocurrencies. Can't tell a bitcoin from a blockchain? Read our explainer to see how the cryptocurrency works. Bitcoin, however, is not the only digital currency which has enjoyed a strong market rally. "We've had the total market capitalisation of all cryptocurrencies rising three-fold this year - from around US$25 billion to now US$75 billion," according to Steve Sammartino, entrepreneur and technology author. In Australian dollar terms, the total market capitalisation is more than $101 billion. "The big two, bitcoin and ethereum, are heading the charge," Mr Sammartino told ABC's The World Today. Aud/usd Is Overvalued Says This Bank's Iphone And Ipad Index

AUD/USD is overvalued says this bank's iPhone and iPad index The new iPhone is being launched Tuesday 12 September 2017, but buyine one inAustralia means you'll be paying above the odds. So says Commsec, the securities division of Commonwealth Bank (CBA) An iPhone 7 32 GB is $1,079 in Australia (approx. US$860) In the US, the same phone is US$649 (more expensive in California) That's a big difference, and it'll be reflected in the price of the new phone being launched TheCommSec index showsAustralia is the 17th cheapest country in the world (of 57 nations) to buy an Apple iPad Pro in US dollar terms This time last year, Australia was the 20th cheapest The year before Australia was the second cheapest Last year we surmised that the Aussie dollar probably was "fairly valued" or perhaps even slightly "over-valued". This year, the Aussie dollar looks more expensive. But "commodity currencies" like the Australian dollar, Canadian dollar and Norwegian krone are in favour at present. The Reserve Bank has grappled with the issue of whether the Aussie dollar is too firm against major currencies, saying "The higher exchange rate is expected to contribute to the subdued price pressures in the economy. It is also weighing on the outlook for output and employment." This is what the new phone will look like, apparently. Still not in my footy club colours, sheesh. (ps. I dunno about the Commsec index .... if the AUD was overvalued wouldn't the eyephonethingy be cheaper in AUD?) Blockchain companies and new cryptocurrencies have been flourishing this year. Their total market cap exceeded 177 Billions dollar in 2017 as hackers interest grew proportionately. In 2017 we witnessed quite a few large hacks causing these companies millions of dollars in losses. Even though blockchain technology is fundamentally more secure when it comes to keeping your money safe, the ecosystem around it is filled with flaws that hackers are racing to exploit. In this article I will analyse the biggest hacks of 2017. Firstly, you must understand what an ICO is, as they played a key factor in a lot of hacks this year. An ICO (Initial Coin Offering) is a way for blockchain companies to issue a token (a coin or cryptocurrency) in order to raise funds. Its comparable to an IPO (Initial Price Offering) with the exception that these companies are usually running the ICO before having any working products (while IPOs are usually done to expand capital of a private company). The way this works is pretty simple. The company opens the ICO, they give their Ethereum (or other) address to the public & the public starts sending money to this address. A smart contract running in the background will take responsibility to exchange the Ether for the companys token. The Enigma hack is one of the funniest ever. The hacker didnt have to use any technical skills to steal millions of dollars from users. Earlier this year the Ashley Madison website got hacked and the database was leaked online. The hacker simply found out that the CEO of Enigma had its password leaked in the Ashley Madison hack. Luckily enough for the hacker, the CEO reused his password on several accounts such as his email & slack address. From there, the hacker proceeded to start the ICO with a little difference: he chan Continue reading >>

How Do I Buy Cryptocurrency?

How Do I Buy Cryptocurrency?

If you dont know about cryptocurrency yet dont worry, you havent missed the boat. When you start to see some of the returns this all-new asset class is making you might think its too late But its not. And we should know. Weve been involved in this sector for over seven years. Considering the sector itself is only eight years old, thats saying something. We were dabbling in Bitcoin in 2010. We were trying out altcoin (now called cryptocurrency) in 2014. Weve spoken to developers of cryptocurrency and weve tried or investigated every which way you can buy, sell and trade in them all. Still, the average person on the street has no idea what cryptocurrency is. Most of them still dont even know about Bitcoin. And that excites us. Its exciting because it means theres a whole world of potential still available for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, NEM and potentially hundreds of other cryptocurrencies out there. But of course this is a new asset class. And in many cases even calling them cryptocurrency is misleading. The truth is only a few you could classify as currency. Some you would classify as commodities. Some are energy. Some are just simply businesses that exist on a blockchain. In our view these are all forms of digital assets. And thats the way you should view most of them. That helps to analyse their worth now, their future worth and whether or not theyre worthy of investment. Now we could start to get pretty technical here and go into the detailed mechanics of cryptography, the algorithms these are based on, blockchains, ICOs, and all the ins and outs of how the different coins work. But we wont. You see, one of the first questions we get when people ask us about crypto is how do I buy cryptocurrency? And thats what were going to help you with now. Step one when buying c Continue reading >>

Commsec Review - Is Commsec.com.au Scam Or Good Forex Broker?

Commsec Review - Is Commsec.com.au Scam Or Good Forex Broker?

CommSec seems like a pretty serious broker. After checking with the online registry of ASIC we can confirm that the information presented on the website is accurate. The broker is in fact regulated by the Australian authorities and this should be seen as a huge advantage. Potential clients can be sure about the safety of their funds, since regulation forces the brokerage to handle the clients money separately from their own. This significantly lowers the risk of foul play on part of the broker. Whats more, ASIC requires brokerages to have a minimum capital of 1 000 000 AUD, and successful compliance with such a requirement lends the broker further legitimacy in the eyes of potential traders. CommSec is also a subsidiary of the Commonwealth bank of Australia, as was mentioned above. The Commonwealth bank is one of the major banks of Australia and has over 1100 branches around the globe, as well as more than 50 thousand employees. This further cements the credibility of the brokerage. For those interested in other brokers operating in Australia be sure to check out our list of Australian forex brokers Through a demo account we were granted access to the trading platform provided by the brokerage. On it we could see a spread of 0.8 pips on EUR/USD. Compared to the industry average of 1.5, the spread offered by CommSec is pretty good and favorable for potential traders. The size of the spread is especially important in long-term since it could add up to a noticeable amount and lower the potential profit of the trader. Such a low spread is always in our opinion a big plus for the brokerage. Through the demo account we could calculate the leverage on EUR/USD to be 1:100. This is a reasonable leverage which extends potential traders freedom in their trading, as well as the po Continue reading >>

Blockchain has the potential to revolutionise the way we do business. Below we examine five ways how. The technology underpinning cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin may well revolutionise the way we do business, with new applications extending across all sectors of the economy. The future is only ever just around the corner. Technologies that are already available today have the potential to radically transform the world we live in. One such technology is blockchain, a distributed ledger technology best known as the infrastructure behind digital currency Bitcoin. For some time, CommBanks Innovation Lab in Sydney has been at the forefront of blockchain research. Whats increasingly clear to us is that blockchains potential reaches well beyond the financial services sector. In fact, its no exaggeration to say that blockchain could revolutionise our whole economy. At the heart of blockchains potential is a decentralised structure that does away with the need for third-party authorisations or centralised ledgers. Instead, blockchain creates an open, shared digital record, using a peer-to-peer network of participants to verify and approve every transaction, making transactions completely transparent and secure. In addition to making transactions completely transparent, it can contain a limitless amount of information, making reconciliation and execution virtually frictionless. Here are five ways it could transform the way we do business: The Commonwealth Bank is a founding participant in the global R3 consortium, set up to define the standards and protocols for a broader application of distributed ledger technology. Among other things, weve been exploring blockchains potential as a safe way to transfer money (or any virtual value) around the world. Blockchain could help cut tr Continue reading >>
