I Spent A Day Trying To Pay For Things With Bitcoin And A Bar Of Gold

I spent a day trying to pay for things with bitcoin and a bar of gold Ray Dalio , the founder of the largest hedge fund in the world, told Henry Blodget that investors should have 5% to 10% of their portfolio in gold. During that same interview, Dalio called bitcoin a "speculative bubble" and said "bitcoin is not an effective medium exchange by and large" and "it's not easy to buy things with the bitcoin." Dalio isn't the only one asking these questions about bitcoin. If bitcoin really is a currency, then it is important that you can buy things with it. But this may not be a fair argument. We all seem to accept gold as a storehold of wealth and as an alternative currency even though you really can't make purchases with gold. So in an effort to fairly compare gold and bitcoin in this vein, we went out into the world to see how easy it was to spend both in everyday transactions. It turns out it isn't easy to spend either. The only person we could find who accepted gold in New York City was Donald Trump in 2011 . Bitcoin is slightly easier to spend. We couldn't use our bitcoin at Subway, which is on a few lists of retailers that accept bitcoin . Le Village, a restaurant in New York's East Village that many have reported accepts bitcoin , was closed down when we tried to eat there. But we did have some luck spending bitcoin. We found that it was easy to use bitcoin on Overstock.com . Also, my daughter's preschool accepts bitcoin for tuition payments. But if you really want to use bitcoin in everyday transactions, you can get a debit card that allows you to spend bitcoin easily. But maybe we are simply using the wrong words when we talk about bitcoin. As Adam Ludwin, the founder and CEO of Chain, says in his open letter to Jamie Dimon , "since this isn't about cryptocurrenc Continue reading >>

Bitcoin is undoubtedly the worlds #1 digital store of value. As such, it would only make sense for it to be accepted as a form of payment across the world. A common misconception is that bitcoin isnt real money and you cant actually spend your bitcoins anywhere besides the darknet. This, of course, couldnt be further from the truth! We would go as far to say that if your only money was in bitcoin right now, you could still spend it everywhere and carry on with life. Today, Bitcoin can be used to purchase from Amazon, restaurants, brick and mortar retail stores, spas, and even travel agencies for booking flights and hotels. The sky is the limit when it comes to Bitcoin. Here are a few ways to purchase every-day things with Bitcoin: It is well known that nearly anything can be bought on Amazon these days. Having the ability to use bitcoin to make Amazon purchases would give you the ability to have just about anything delivered to your door would be a game changer. Luckily, there are a few websites that are making this possible. Purse.io brings a new concept to the table to allow owners of bitcoin to instantly purchase items off of Amazon, while also giving you 5 to 15% off. Yes, thats right: it is significantly cheaper to buy things off of Amazon with bitcoin. The way it works is the buyer tells Purse what Amazon product they would like and subsequently send the proper amount of bitcoin into whats called an escrow. Purse makes this processed streamlined by allowing users to import their Wishlist or paste a single URL in the in the search bar. After the items to buy are selected, either Purse or another user on the website buys the product on Amazon and has it shipped to your address. When you receive the product, you release your bitcoin from escrow and Purse or the user Continue reading >>

How To Buy Almost Anything With Your Bitcoin

How To Buy Almost Anything With Your Bitcoin

How to Buy Almost Anything With Your Bitcoin Bitcoin is a great cryptocurrency for investment, but it's also a surprisingly useful real-world currency At this early stage of blockchain development, most people buying cryptocurrencies are doing it as a speculative investment. But every now and then, it's nice to use your cryptocurrencies like actual currency. Plus if you want to cash out anyway, directly spending your coins on something you want can be a lot quicker than the alternative: sending your coins from your wallet to an exchange, waiting for that transaction to complete, selling them for fiat on the exchange, waiting for that transaction to complete, withdrawing them from the exchange, and waiting (sometimes days) for that transaction to complete. The problem? A lot of shops, both online and off, still don't accept Bitcoin (or any other cryptocurrencies). Here's how to use Bitcoin to buy from them anyway. Most of the Bitcoin Debit Cards you'll see advertised are really just prepaid cards, so they're essentially the same as just cashing out your crypto for fiat and then transferring that fiat into a debit account: you'll pay your Bitcoin into the card at a predetermined dollar value, and then the card has that amount of dollars regardless of when you spend it and what the price of Bitcoin does in the interim. There's one exception to that, though, and that's the Shift VISA card , which links directly to your Coinbase account and withdraws the relevant amount of Bitcoin whenever you use it to make a purchase. If you'd like to spend Bitcoin occasionally but don't want to cash out any more than you need in case the price goes up, this is probably your best option. The easiest way to use crypto to buy from a shop that doesn't accept crypto is to buy a gift card. The Continue reading >>

On the streets of Bristol, it proves a hard sell The digital currency can now be bought at ATMs around the country Last modified on Friday 1 December 2017 22.01EST My journey into the dark economy starts much as expected: in front of a computer screen, late at night. It ends somewhere quite unexpected, in a humdrum setting a world away from the stereotype of modernity, equality and sticking it to the man promised by digital currencies such as Bitcoin: it ends in a used DVD store, my purchase refused. The dark economy is moving into the light. In a few scattered places, 40 or so in London, one in Manchester, another in Birmingham, Bitcoin ATM machines have appeared, issuing the cryptocurrency from an unlikely array of convenience stores, vaping outlets and barbershops. Does this mean that the virtual has become real? Can anyone join the Bitcoin challenge? Can you buy stuff with Bitcoin ? And what the heck is a cryptocurrency anyway? I find the future of digital trading in the scuzzy hipster oasis of Stokes Croft in Bristol. Standing forlorn among the artisan bakers and cocktail bars is the Best Supermarket. I Bought $250 In Bitcoin. Here's What I Learned

I bought $250 in bitcoin. Here's what I learned by Seth Fiegerman @sfiegerman December 8, 2017: 11:24 AM ET Where's the skepticism as bitcoin keeps soaring? Some people kill time at the airport by browsing duty-free shops. I decided to shop for bitcoin. But first, there are two things you should know about me: I tend to be almost as afraid of losing money investing as I am of flying. On some level, I figured one fear might cancel out the other. So last Thursday, while waiting for a flight to Nashville, I pulled up a popular application called Coinbase that can be used to buy and sell bitcoin. The virtual currency had hit $10,000 for the first time a couple days earlier, before retreating somewhat. News of bitcoin's rapid rise was everywhere, including on CNN . For 15 minutes at the airport, I refreshed the price of bitcoin over and over, watching as it gained and lost hundreds of dollars in a matter of minutes. I called out the price fluctuations breathlessly to my wife, who gently encouraged me not to be an idiot, before returning to her magazine. She was in good company. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon recently called bitcoin a "fraud" and suggested people who buy it are "stupid." Warren Buffett called bitcoin a " mirage " in 2014 and warned investors to "stay away." Are you trading Bitcoin? We want to hear from you . And yet bitcoin has climbed more than tenfold since Buffett's warning. Earlier this month, one college friend casually told me over drinks he'd made tens of thousands of dollars investing in another cryptocurrency. He said he hoped it would be worth enough one day to buy a house. When I saw the price of bitcoin fall to $9,500, I pressed buy, defying the wisdom of two finance titans and my wife. One hundred dollars, or 0.0101 bitcoins. (A few days later, Continue reading >>

People are so caught up on what bitcoin could be - an investment, a stock you can trade , a technology that will shape the future of entire industries - that they can forget that it's also, as the "coin" in the name implies, a form of currency. It was designed to upend government money and become one of the foremost currencies in the world. Blockchain is important technology , but bitcoin was also supposed to help you pay for things without banks getting involved at all. So, can you actually spend it? And what can you buy with bitcoin, anyway? You don't need to worry about bitcoin overtaking the dollar anytime soon, but part of bitcoin's ascension as the foremost cryptocurrency has been that now, whether you mine bitcoin or buy bitcoin , there are a variety of places that will accept it as payment. Many of them are online, but you may be surprised to find that depending on where you are, you could be able to find a local bitcoin-accepting shop near you. Granted, you shouldn't expect a sudden and rapid increase in stores who take bitcoin. It has a long way to go before becoming widespread. Volatility in price, combined with lengthy transaction times on the busy blockchain, make it more difficult for establishments to accept bitcoin payments. It's also made consumers wary of spending it; after all, why spend $30 worth of bitcoin if in the future it might be worth much more if you invest it? Still, should bitcoin continue to survive and manage to hit an even higher peak, we may see websites and retailers start considering an expansion and letting you use bitcoin. If you're looking to spend instead of selling or trading your bitcoins , here are some of the things you can buy. Bitcoin, being a digital currency accessed online, is naturally more of a fit for being used via w Continue reading >>

Does Anyone Really Use Bitcoin To Purchase Anything?

Does Anyone Really Use Bitcoin To Purchase Anything?

Does anyone really use bitcoin to purchase anything? When Fiverr was accepting Bitcoins, it was normal for me to pay for services there using it. Too bad they stopped it. Now, I rarely find the regular merchants where I trade, accepting bitcoins. This includes regular domain registrars, e-services companies like Buffer, etc. and web hosting companies like FlyWheel, WP Engine, LiquidWeb, etc. Build it and they will come, or loosely translated, Accept it and we shall pay for it! Bitcoins very high deflation rate makes many people (like me) reluctant to spend their coins. Its usually wiser to use your fiat currency for purchases and let digital assets appreciate in value. This is probably not what Satoshi Nakamoto intended, but maybe he underestimated how popular bitcoin would become and how fast its value would rise. The deflation rate is much higher than he anticipated. In my opinion bitcoin currently is too deflationary to use it as a medium of exchange, but this may change in the future. Until then, it is an excellent store of value, easily beating real estate, gold, tech shares, etc. Having said all that, I can still think of 3 good reasons to spend bitcoin: You have no other option, for example when you live in a country like Venezuela where inflation is extremely high. You bought bitcoin cheaply a long time ago and now you want to cash out, for example buying a home. Your income is in bitcoin, for example if youre a miner. Absolutely. My company does and our customers have embraced it. We sell digital items across the world. Fraud is a big problem with digital item sales since people who buy a digital item (e.g. a video game skin) can use a stolen credit card to buy the item and instantly get it (since its a digital download it arrives instantly).
