Brian Moynihan, CEO of Bank of America said he supports the development of blockchain technologies behind bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Speaking at The Economic Club of Washington DC, Mr Moynihan was asked whether he was worried about the rise of cryptocurrencies. He said: If you think about cryptocurrencies there are two or three different concepts embedded in. One is the concept of distributed ledger, the so-called, which is the idea of verified ownership interest in something that can be verified by anyone. Read next: Sierra Leones electoral commission is pushing back on reports that blockchain powered its election On Mar. 7, elections in Sierra Leone marked a global landmark: presidential elections supported by blockchain. As president Ernest Bai Koroma leaves office after serving two five-year terms, the maximum allowed constitutionally, Sierra Leoneans have had to pick from a pool of 16 candidates including the ruling partys Samura Kamara, the erstwhile foreign minister, and Julius Maada Bio, former military head of state and candidate of the main opposition party. Results released by Sierra Leones election commission (NEC) suggest a run-off between Bio and Kamara is likely with neither candidate securing the required 55% of votes so far. Sierra Leones new president will be tasked with a continued rebuilding given the countrys recent major disasters. In 2014, an Ebola outbreak led to nearly 4,000 deaths and GDP losses estimated at $1.4 billion a major loss for one of the worlds poorest countries. Last year Sierra Leones capital also suffered devastating flooding and mudslides believed to have claimed more than 1,000 lives . In 280 polling centers across Sierra Leones Western District, the most populous in the country, votes cast were manually recorded by Agora, a Swiss foundation offering digital voting solutions, using permissioned blockchain. Agora was accredited as an independent observer by NEC to test its technology and has since published results on its website. The idea was simple: just like blockchain technology helps ensure transparency with crytpocurrency transactions using public ledgers, by recording each vote on blockchain, Agora ensured transparency with votes cast in the district. While entries on permissioned blockchains can be viewed by everyone, entri Continue reading >>

Ibm's New Blockchain-ready Computer Is Smaller Than A Grain Of Salt | Digital Trends

Posted on March 22, 2018 - 1:30PM 3.22.18 - 1:30PM Pictured: 64 tiny motherboards for the CPUs, and in the left corner two tiny CPUs attached to the motherboards. IBM IBM kicked off its Think 2018 conference today with a bombshell announcement: It has made the worlds smallest computer, and its designed from the ground up to work with the blockchain . The computer itself is smaller than a single grain of salt, coming in at 1 millimeter by 1 millimeter and reportedly has about the same computing power as a 1990s era CPU . From the beginning, IBMs tiny computer was designed with blockchain technology in mind. The company wants to extend digital authentication to objects in the physical world think the next generation of barcodes used in retail. While a miniature computer isnt strictly needed to do that, it expands whats possible. The devices capabilities go well beyond simple authentication. It has the potential to perform data summarization and local data analysis tasks that often fall to IoT devices. Its all a matter of how developers choose to use the architecture. Its a general purpose machine, so it can do these things, said Dan Friedman, an IBM researcher who contributed to the project, speaking to Digital Trends earlier today. What kind of limits it, to some extent, is that in order to keep it physically small, the amount of memory that it has is small. Suffice it to say that the smallest computer around isnt exactly a powerhouse. Its been compared to a desktop processor circa 1990. The computers limited horsepower keeps its manufacturing costs low just 10 cents per unit. Thats inexpensive enough to allow the component to be embedded in packaging, or anything else thats meant to be thrown away. I think it would always be the case that you would consider this to be Continue reading >>

Sierra Leone Government Denies The Role Of Blockchain In Its Recent Election

Sierra Leone Government Denies The Role Of Blockchain In Its Recent Election

The National Electoral Commission Sierra Leone has come out with a clarification to and, an outright condemnation of the news that theirs was one of the first elections recorded to the blockchain. While the blockchain voting company Agora claimed to have run the first blockchain-based election, it appears that the company did little more than observe the voting and store some of the results. The NEC [National Electoral Commission] has not used and is not using blockchain technology in any part of the electoral process, said NEC head Mohamed Conteh. Why he is adamant about this fact is unclear questions I asked went unanswered but he and his team have created a set of machine readable election results and posted the following clarification: National Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (@NECsalone) March 19, 2018 Anonymized votes/ballots are being recorded on Agoras blockchain, which will be publicly available for any interested party to review, count and validate, said Agoras Leonardo Gammar. This is the first time a government election is using blockchain technology. In Africa the reactions were mixed. It would be like me showing up to the UK election with my computer and saying, let me enter your counting room, let me plug-in and count your results, said Morris Marah to RFI . Agoras results for the two districts they tallied differed considerably from the official results, according to an analysis of the two sets of statistics carried out by RFI, wrote RFIs Daniel Finnan. Clearly the technology is controversial, especially in election law and vote-counting. Established players are already trying mightily to avoid fraud and corruption and Agoras claim, no matter how plausible, further muddies those waters. Was Agora simply attempting a PR stunt in support of its upcom Continue reading >>
