Sparkfun Replicates Gilfoyles Bitcoin Price Alert System From Siliconvalley

Sparkfun Replicates Gilfoyles Bitcoin Price Alert System From Siliconvalley

Author, writer, maker, and a former mechanical designer. www.cameroncoward.com @cameron_coward SparkFun Replicates Gilfoyles Bitcoin Price Alert System from SiliconValley Of the characters on HBOs Silicon Valley, Gilfoyle is probably the most polarizing. On the one hand, hes got some serious tech chops and is pretty hilarious. But, on the other hand, hes not exactly nice to the other characters on the show. One fun example of that is shown in Season 5, Episode 3 when Gilfoyle creates an alert for when Bitcoin dips below the threshold where it would no longer be profitable to mine. Of course, he didnt just give it a simple chime. Instead, the notification is the very short but very loud song You Suffer by Napalm Death, which Gilfoyle chose specifically to startle the other characters. For SparkFuns Enginursday, Pearce decided to replicate Gilfoyles alert , and you can follow along if you want to make one yourself! Building the alert device only requires a few components: an ESP8266 Thing Development Board , an MP3 Trigger, a Hamburger Mini Speaker, and a handful of supplementary parts. The ESP8266 connects to the internet and monitors the price of Bitcoin, and when it crosses below a set threshold it plays a sound on the MP3 Trigger. That can be whatever MP3 file you want but you can certainly use You Suffer like Gilfoyle did if you want to annoy the people around you! Continue reading >>

Here at Revolut, we believe that everyone should have access to fair exchange rates , but how do you know when that rate is just right? Whether youre swapping Pounds for Euros or Bitcoin for Ether, weve launched Price Alerts to help you get more bang for your buck. Price Alerts allow you to receive a notification whenever the price of a currency goes above or below a certain point. You can think about it this way: Remember when you came back from that ski trip in the Alps and had some leftover Euros in your account? You can set a price alert for the GBP / EUR rate, prompting you to exchange your spare Euros back into Pounds when the price goes above 1.16, for example. Setting up price alerts works with any of the 25 fiat currencies we support, as well as cryptocurrencies. For example, price alerts can tell you when to sell your precious Bitcoin, if the USD / BTC rate goes above $15,000, or to buy Ether when it falls below 600. Like reading our blog? Subscribe now! We promise not to spam you To begin using price alerts, youll need to update to the latest version of the Revolut app if you havent done so already. You can then set up up to 30 different alerts, easily turn individual alerts on or off at any point, or delete the ones that you no longer need. Heres how it works: Tap the 'Rates' button in the top right corner of the app Under 'Alerts', tap the blue + button and select the currency you want to receive an alert for (eg. Alert me if BTC goes above $15,000) Select the second currency in the pair (eg. Enginursday: Gilfoyle's Bitcoin Price Alert

Enginursday: Gilfoyle's Bitcoin Price Alert

Enginursday: Gilfoyle's Bitcoin Price Alert How the project for this Enginursday went from a very involved asset tracking project, to a motorized fly vise which, thanks to a stock error, is now replicating a joke from a TV show. While this is a pretty simple project, it taught me a lot about how well the community came together to make the ESP8266 the phenomenon that it is today (give yourselves a round of applause). If you're not familiar with Silicon Valley, it's a show here in the US that pokes fun at the culture of tech startups, which means occasionally the show takes aim at electronics hobbyists and DIYers. One of the main characters in particular, Bertram Gilfoyle, has become the show's DIY representation, doing things like reading the Arduino handbook and building his own server rack. Gilfoyle in Season 1 with a familiar book. In the most recent episode, Gilfoyle created an alert on his computer to let him know when the price of Bitcoin moved below or above the threshold where mining for the cryptocurrency is no longer profitable, so he can turn his miner off/on remotely. The thing to note is that it's meant to annoy those around him based on the skills of his character, he could just as easily have automated powering up and down the mining rig. Instead, he created a system that blares the metal song "You Suffer" by Napalm Death every time the price crosses that threshold. Part of the joke is that he leaves for an extended period of time without shutting down this system, knowing nobody in the office has the password to his computer. There are plenty of clips of on YouTube (fair warning: as it's an HBO show, there's HBO language in the clip). This episode coincided nicely with me taking an extended period of time off to recover from knee surgery, and I felt it Continue reading >>

Someone Made That Silicon Valley Alert That Plays Death Metal Whenever Bitcoins Price Moves

Someone Made That Silicon Valley Alert That Plays Death Metal Whenever Bitcoins Price Moves

Someone made that Silicon Valley alert that plays death metal whenever bitcoins price moves Mild spoilers ahead for Silicon Valleys Season 5, Episode 3 In a recent episode of HBOs Silicon Valley, Gilfoyle (Martin Starr) reveals that he mines bitcoin as a side gig but only when the price is above a certain value. He creates an alert that plays the 1.36 second death metal song You Suffer by Napalm Death whenever bitcoin rises or drops so he can remote toggle his rig at home. Given the volatility of bitcoin and the volume of the song, this quickly becomes annoying and becomes a recurring theme throughout the episode. Now, an Icelandic website design agency called Viska has created a web version of Gilfoyles death metal alert which is just as startling as promised. Sindri Gumundsson from Viska explained that his company watches Silicon Valley as a weekly event while a season is airing and that the team built the tool just for fun. The Viska team wrote a simple Javascript plugin that fetches the price of bitcoin from Coincap.io , then built the site off Wordpress, all within three hours. Now all a user will need to completely imitate Gilfoyle is an actual mining rig at home to toggle on and off remotely. We actually follow the bitcoin price quite a lot and playing beautiful music each time it passes a certain amount makes the day better, said Gumundsson, in an email to The Verge. Its impossible to tell if hes joking about You Suffer being beautiful music. According to Genius.com , the lyrics are, You suffer, but why? though to the casual listener it sounds a lot more like NUOOOOOH. Continue reading >>

How To Use Price Alerts For Bitcoin Investing

How To Use Price Alerts For Bitcoin Investing

How to Use Price Alerts for Bitcoin Investing by Charles Bovaird 1,136 Investors read this There are many different ways to manage potential losses, but one of the best ways is through price alerts. You can receive these alerts, which notify you when bitcoin prices reach a certain level, through several mediums including email, SMS, and push notifications. Some exchanges, including GDAX and Kraken , offer apps that provide these price alerts. With these notifications, you can receive real-time data without having to constantly monitor the markets, and use this information to decide how best to manage your current trading positions. If bitcoin prices drop slightly, for example, you may opt to cap your losses by selling your holdings. However, if the digital currency experiences a sharp drop, you may want to wait out the decline and buy bitcoin at a discount. At this point, you may be wondering why you would want to use price alerts instead of stop-loss orders . In some situations, the answer is simple. For example, if bitcoin starts experiencing a flash crash, suffering sharp declines during a short period, stop-loss orders can cause you to sell your bitcoin for less than you originally intended . Should you decide to set up a stop-market order, and bitcoin ends up experiencing a notable decline, triggering that order can cause your digital currency to sell for notably lower than your stop price. If bitcoin is trading at $2,000, and you set up a stop-market order that automatically triggers when bitcoin drops to $1,800, a flash crash could cause your market order to fill significantly below that level. Alternatively, you could use a price alert to navigate a situation like this one. If bitcoin is valued at $2,000, you could simply set up a price alert that notifies you Continue reading >>
