Someone Made That Silicon Valley Alert That Plays Death Metal Whenever Bitcoins Price Moves

Someone made that Silicon Valley alert that plays death metal whenever bitcoins price moves Mild spoilers ahead for Silicon Valleys Season 5, Episode 3 In a recent episode of HBOs Silicon Valley, Gilfoyle (Martin Starr) reveals that he mines bitcoin as a side gig but only when the price is above a certain value. He creates an alert that plays the 1.36 second death metal song You Suffer by Napalm Death whenever bitcoin rises or drops so he can remote toggle his rig at home. Given the volatility of bitcoin and the volume of the song, this quickly becomes annoying and becomes a recurring theme throughout the episode. Now, an Icelandic website design agency called Viska has created a web version of Gilfoyles death metal alert which is just as startling as promised. Sindri Gumundsson from Viska explained that his company watches Silicon Valley as a weekly event while a season is airing and that the team built the tool just for fun. The Viska team wrote a simple Javascript plugin that fetches the price of bitcoin from Coincap.io , then built the site off Wordpress, all within three hours. Now all a user will need to completely imitate Gilfoyle is an actual mining rig at home to toggle on and off remotely. We actually follow the bitcoin price quite a lot and playing beautiful music each time it passes a certain amount makes the day better, said Gumundsson, in an email to The Verge. Its impossible to tell if hes joking about You Suffer being beautiful music. According to Genius.com , the lyrics are, You suffer, but why? though to the casual listener it sounds a lot more like NUOOOOOH. Continue reading >>

You can use it to pay for things without any involvement of a third party broker (a bank or government). It is the first decentralized cryptocurrency; created and held electronically. Although physical forms of bitcoin do exist, currencys primary form is data so that you can trade it online peer-to-peer, using wallets, iphone apps or an online service like Coinbase . Each Bitcoin is subdivided down to eight decimal places, forming 100,000,000 smaller units called satoshis. Bitcoins work like paper money in many ways with some key differences. Think of Bitcoin as a big record book (aka blockchain) shared by all the users. When someone pays for something using Bitcoin or gets paid, the transaction is recorded in the record book. Computers around the world compete to confirm that transaction by solving complicated mathematical problems and in turn, the winner gets rewarded with a very small portion of a Bitcoin. This process is known as mining (more on this later). In essence, Bitcoins are electricity converted into long strings of code that have monetary value. Some consider Bitcoin as a commodity, like gold. Think of it as an investment. You can tuck them away and hope their value increases over the years. The first Bitcoin proof of concept was published in 2009 by a person or a group of people known as Satoshi Naka Continue reading >>

Coinbase 101: How To Enable Price Alerts To Buy Or Sell At The Perfect Time

Coinbase 101: How To Enable Price Alerts To Buy Or Sell At The Perfect Time

Bitcoin's wild price fluctuations and by extension, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, and Ethereum can be terrifying if you're new to trading cryptocurrency. Seasoned traders, however, see these price movements as opportunities to maximize their holdings and profits. With Coinbase , you can trade cryptocurrencies more efficiently. You can't automatically set purchases and sales of bitcoins, litecoins, bitcoin cash, and ethereum at certain prices as you could on an exchange site like GDAX or Poloniex , but Coinbase lets you set price alerts to help ensure you don't miss out on buying and selling opportunities. Best of all, enabling price alerts is simple and very easy, and setup is the same for both iPhones and Android devices. To get started, open Coinbase and tap on "Alerts" at the bottom of the screen. Choose which cryptocurrency you want to create a price alert for by selecting either the BTC, ETH, or LTC tab near the top of the screen. Once you've chosen a digital currency, tap on "Create Price Alert" towards the bottom of the screen. A price gauge will appear from the bottom of the screen for you to adjust, so either swipe right if you want to be notified when your target cryptocurrency falls below a certain price, or swipe left to be alerted when it goes up and reaches a specific price. Once you've set a target price, tap on "Create Alert" at the bottom of the screen. To add more alerts, simply tap on the "+" button in the upper-right corner of the screen and repeat the same process. With your price alerts set, Coinbase will automatically notify you if your favorite coin either hits a certain price. This will give you ample opportunity to either buy more digital currency at a discounted rate, or sell off part or all of your holdings at a high price. Once you're finished wi Continue reading >>

How To Use Price Alerts For Bitcoin Investing

How To Use Price Alerts For Bitcoin Investing

How to Use Price Alerts for Bitcoin Investing by Charles Bovaird 1,136 Investors read this There are many different ways to manage potential losses, but one of the best ways is through price alerts. You can receive these alerts, which notify you when bitcoin prices reach a certain level, through several mediums including email, SMS, and push notifications. Some exchanges, including GDAX and Kraken , offer apps that provide these price alerts. With these notifications, you can receive real-time data without having to constantly monitor the markets, and use this information to decide how best to manage your current trading positions. If bitcoin prices drop slightly, for example, you may opt to cap your losses by selling your holdings. However, if the digital currency experiences a sharp drop, you may want to wait out the decline and buy bitcoin at a discount. At this point, you may be wondering why you would want to use price alerts instead of stop-loss orders . In some situations, the answer is simple. For example, if bitcoin starts experiencing a flash crash, suffering sharp declines during a short period, stop-loss orders can cause you to sell your bitcoin for less than you originally intended . Should you decide to set up a stop-market order, and bitcoin ends up experiencing a notable decline, triggering that order can cause your digital currency to sell for notably lower than your stop price. If bitcoin is trading at $2,000, and you set up a stop-market order that automatically triggers when bitcoin drops to $1,800, a flash crash could cause your market order to fill significantly below that level. Alternatively, you could use a price alert to navigate a situation like this one. If bitcoin is valued at $2,000, you could simply set up a price alert that notifies you Continue reading >>

Enginursday: Gilfoyle's Bitcoin Price Alert

Enginursday: Gilfoyle's Bitcoin Price Alert

Enginursday: Gilfoyle's Bitcoin Price Alert How the project for this Enginursday went from a very involved asset tracking project, to a motorized fly vise which, thanks to a stock error, is now replicating a joke from a TV show. While this is a pretty simple project, it taught me a lot about how well the community came together to make the ESP8266 the phenomenon that it is today (give yourselves a round of applause). If you're not familiar with Silicon Valley, it's a show here in the US that pokes fun at the culture of tech startups, which means occasionally the show takes aim at electronics hobbyists and DIYers. One of the main characters in particular, Bertram Gilfoyle, has become the show's DIY representation, doing things like reading the Arduino handbook and building his own server rack. Gilfoyle in Season 1 with a familiar book. In the most recent episode, Gilfoyle created an alert on his computer to let him know when the price of Bitcoin moved below or above the threshold where mining for the cryptocurrency is no longer profitable, so he can turn his miner off/on remotely. The thing to note is that it's meant to annoy those around him based on the skills of his character, he could just as easily have automated powering up and down the mining rig. Instead, he created a system that blares the metal song "You Suffer" by Napalm Death every time the price crosses that threshold. Part of the joke is that he leaves for an extended period of time without shutting down this system, knowing nobody in the office has the password to his computer. There are plenty of clips of on YouTube (fair warning: as it's an HBO show, there's HBO language in the clip). This episode coincided nicely with me taking an extended period of time off to recover from knee surgery, and I felt it Continue reading >>
