A Chat With Ham Tran, Director Of Bitcoin Heist

A chat with Ham Tran, director of Bitcoin Heist Bitcoin Heist was a Vietnamese heist movie, released in February 2016. The film was about a team of skilled criminals and a special agent on the hunt for one of Interpols most wanted criminals, who uses Bitcoin as the mean of conducting crime. Today, we have a chance to talk with Ham Tran, the director of the movie, and take a look back at what was the first Bitcoin action movie ever, not only in Vietnam, but also in the world. Bitcoin Vietnam (BV): How did you get the idea of making Bitcoin Heist? Ham Tran: It was back in 2013. I got the idea of the movie from my best friend Scott, who had been mining Bitcoin since 2009. It was when I had just finished my horror film Hollow, we were having coffee and he told me how he just helped his friend reset his whole system because he was hacked by CryptoLocker. I was like: Wait! What was that? And he said: You went to a website and it hacked into your system and locked all your files and asked for some ransom in Bitcoin. And I was like: What is Bitcoin? And he was like: You dont know anything about Bitcoin yet? He then told me about Bitcoin and I immediately thought that it could be a great background story for a heist movie. It was actually something that I can work to put into a film. And I spent many many weekends of meetings and coffee with Scott to set up the whole story for Bitcoin Heist. He was basically my consultant for this film. BV: At that time had you believed in Bitcoin yet? Ham Tran: Scott convinced me.I remembered I went home and talked to my brother and he was like: Whatever, cryptocurrency is not gonna happen. I was like: You just watch, man. But a few months later then, Mt. Gox happened so he was like: See! I told you its unstable, right.I remember writing the s Continue reading >>

Hackers Have Stolen Millions Of Dollars In Bitcoin -- Using Only Phone Numbers

Hackers Have Stolen Millions Of Dollars In Bitcoin -- Using Only Phone Numbers Just after midnight on August 11, self-professed night owl Jered Kenna was working at home in Medellin, Colombia, when he was notified the passwords had been reset on two of his email addresses. He tried to set up new passwords himself by prompting the email service to send him text messages containing a code but they never arrived. So I called the company to make sure I hadnt forgotten to pay my phone bill, and they said, you dont have a phone with us. You transferred your phone away to another company, he says. A hacker had faked his identity and transferred his phone number from T-Mobile to a carrier called Bandwidth that was linked to a Google Voice account in the hackers possession. Once all the calls and messages to Kennas number were being routed to them, the hacker(s) then reset the passwords for Kennas email addresses by having the SMS codes sent to them (or, technically, to Kennas number, newly in their possession). Within seven minutes of being locked out of his first account, Kenna was shut out of of up to 30 others, including two banks, PayPal, two bitcoin services and, crucially, his Windows account, which was the key to his PC. While this would wreak havoc on anyones life, it had especially disastrous consequences for Kenna. Im an early bitcoiner, he says. I dont think you have to say anything else. Kenna was so early in bitcoin that he remembers when he would plug his computer into the network and see only four other computers running it. Now, there are more than 5,000. Computers supporting the network are slated into a competition to win bitcoin roughly every 10 minutes. In the early days, the payout was 50 bitcoin each time; now its 12.5. Kenna recalls that at a certain poi Continue reading >>

Storing Bitcoins - Bitcoin Wiki

Storing Bitcoins - Bitcoin Wiki

This page is a discussion of the different ways of storing bitcoins, whether for investment purposes or as a medium of exchange . As bitcoin is a digital asset, it can be very un-intuitive to store safely. Historically many people have lost their coins but with proper understanding the risks can be eliminated. If your bitcoins do end up lost or stolen then there's almost certainly nothing that can be done to get them back. tl;dr The best way to store bitcoin is to either buy a hardware wallet or install a multisignature wallet . Have your wallet create a mnemonic recovery phrase , write it down on paper and store it in a safe place. The wallet should be backed by your own full node . Storage of bitcoin can be broken down in a few independent goals: Verification that the bitcoins are genuine Easy access for spending or moving bitcoins The art and science of storing bitcoins is about keeping your private keys safe, yet them still being easily available to you when you want to transact with them. It also requires verifying that your recieved bitcoins are real, and stopping an adversary from spying on you. In the past many people have accidentally lost bitcoins because of failed backups, forgotten hard drives or corrupted SSD devices. Through bitter experience it was found that one of the most practical storage mediums is pencil and paper. The private keys of a bitcoin wallet are encoded into random words from a dictionary which can be written down. If the your hard drive crashes you can find the paper with the mnemonic phrase and restore the entire wallet. All good wallet software ask their users to write down the mnemonic recovery phrase of the wallet. It is worthwhile to keep copies in several locations so that even if your home burns down and nothing remains you can st Continue reading >>

Gox, Bitcoin's $460 Million Disaster Mark Karpeles, the chief executive officer of bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox, center, is escorted as he leaves the Tokyo District Court this past Friday. Photo: Tomohiro Ohsumi/Bloomberg via Getty Images From a distance, the world's largest bitcoin exchange looked like a towering example of renegade entrepreneurism. But on the inside, according to some who were there, Mt. Gox was a messy combination of poor management, neglect, and raw inexperience. Its collapse into bankruptcy last week and the disappearance of $460 million, apparently stolen by hackers, and another $27.4 million missing from its bank accounts came as little surprise to people who had knowledge of the Tokyo-based company's inner workings. The company, these insiders say, was largely a reflection of its CEO and majority stake holder, Mark Karpeles, a man who was more of a computer coder than a chief executive and yet was sometimes distracted even from his technical duties when they were most needed. "Mark liked the idea of being CEO, but the day-to-day reality bored him," says one Mt. Gox insider, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Last week, after a leaked corporate document said that hackers had raided the Mt. Gox exchange, Karpeles confirmed that a huge portion of the money controlled by the company was gone. "We had weaknesses in our system, and our bitcoins vanished. We've caused trouble and inconvenience to many people, and I Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Is Dead

Bitcoin Is Dead

"Bitcoin" is the most widespread, cryptographically-secure Internet currency. It was created in 2009 by someone (or someones) who referred to themselves as "Satoshi Nakamoto." Once it was released into the wild, the bitcoin currency ecosystem operated on a public, inalterable schedule. We know exactly how many bitcoins there are in existence today ( 12,446,725 ) and how many there will eventually be in total: when the 21 millionth bitcoin is minted, the plates automatically self-destruct. (This is a metaphor, of course. There are no minting plates, and nothings going to actually explode.) If you want to read the whole Wikipedia entry on bitcoin, have at it. The genius of bitcoins is that theyre completely untraceable. Cash-money is anonymous and liquid, but even it has limitationsit must be used in face-to-face encounters; dollars have serial numbers on them, and if The Dark Knight is any guide, paper notes can be surreptitiously marked in many ways. But if cash is liquid, bitcoin is totally frictionless. As such, it is the first piece of computer technology to pose a fundamental challenge to the nation-state. Thats because the minting of legal tender is one of the base functions of government. And the person (or persons) who created bitcoin did so with the explicit goal of undermining the idea of sovereign governments. For a while, a lot of people believed the gambit might work. Relatively speaking, there are very few places where you can use bitcoin as tender. But over the last year the value of bitcoins went on an extreme increase. In 2012, a bitcoin sold for about $10 USD. In January of 2013, the exchange rate began increasing, shooting up to $40. By December of 2013, a single bitcoin was selling for just over $1,100 . You read that right. The bubble eventually pop Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Heist: 600 Powerful Computers Stolen In Iceland

Bitcoin heist: 600 powerful computers stolen in Iceland Bitcoin heist: 600 powerful computers stolen in Iceland REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) Some 600 computers used to "mine" bitcoin and other virtual currencies have been stolen from data centers in Iceland in what police say is the biggest series of thefts ever in the North Atlantic island nation. Some 11 people were arrested, including a security guard, in what Icelandic media have dubbed the "Big Bitcoin Heist." A judge at the Reykjanes District Court on Friday ordered two people to remain in custody. The powerful computers, which have not yet been found, are worth almost $2 million. But if the stolen equipment is used for its original purpose to create new bitcoins the thieves could turn a massive profit in an untraceable currency without ever selling the items. "This is a grand theft on a scale unseen before," said Olafur Helgi Kjartansson, the police commissioner on the southwestern Reykjanes peninsula, where two of the burglaries took place. "Everything points to this being a highly organized crime." Three of four burglaries took place in December and a fourth took place in January, but authorities did not make the news public earlier in hopes of tracking down the thieves. Bitcoin is a kind of digital money that isn't tied to a bank or a government. It has been hugely volatile, posting some dizzying intra-day rises and falls over the past year or so. The price of a single bitcoin rocketed to nearly $20,000 late last year and then plunged early this year. On Friday, it was trading just below the $11,000 mark. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies rely on the blockchain, the name given to the public, distributed ledgers which track the coins' ownership. The Bitcoin ledger is powered by "miners," so-called because they thr Continue reading >>

Thousands of servers churning all day long so that people can play an online currency trading simulation. Bitcoin (code: BTC, XBT [2] ) is an Internet -based decentralized cryptocurrency and payment network. It uses strong cryptography to prevent users from duplicating money. Bitcoin's notional independence from the control of governmental entities tends to appeal to libertarians , minarchists , anarcho-capitalists , laissez-faire capitalists, technophiles [3] and criminals. At the same time, it also does not enjoy the security, protection and dispute resolution which those large bodies tend to provide, making it a volatile and often insecure asset. Bitcoin was first proposed by a person known only by the apparent pseudonym of " Satoshi Nakamoto " in late 2008, having started work on it in 2007. [4] [5] Satoshi's identity has been a continuing source of intrigue. [6] [7] The currency is designed to employ lots of computers to process and record transactions. The solution to this is "mining," in which Bitcoin users run software to do all the necessary work. [8] Every time someone successfully proves they performed this work, they receive bitcoins in return. This provides an incentive to keep the currency running, but also attracts a lot of prospectors and speculators looking for easy money, and scammers who consider them suitably exploitable suckers . [9] The use case of the currency is purchasing illicit goods (e.g., drugs and stolen data on darknet markets ) and darknet scams (e.g., murder-for-hire ) [10] [11] and extortion (e.g., "ransomware", for which it is the currency of choice [12] ). [13] It is becoming the preferred currency for internal use by online criminals. [14] [15] Although Bitcoin is widely used on the darknet, it has a key flaw; it's the most transpar Continue reading >>

Amsterdam police have arrested an Icelandic fugitive accused of orchestrating a large-scale computer heist to mine bitcoins. Sindri Thor Stefansson was previously arrested in Iceland on suspicion of masterminding the theft of six hundred computers. Stefansson was one of 11 people arrested in connection with the thefts after HS Orka, an energy company, said it was seeing an exponential rise in the amount of energy being used in data centers to mine and verify crypto-currency transactions. Stefansson, who was not considered a dangerous inmate, was transferredto a a minimum-security facility called Sogn Prison. He escaped ten days after his arrival by climbing out of a window. According to local media, Stefansson took a taxi to Keflavik International Airport, where heboarded a Sweden-bound plane under an assumed name.
