Suspect in Iceland's 'Big Bitcoin Heist' escapes prison A worker walks along a row of computer rigs that run around the clock "mining" bitcoin inside the Genesis Mining cryptocurrency mine in Keflavik, Iceland. (Egill Bjarnason / Associated Press) A prisoner in Iceland suspected of masterminding the theft of about 600 computers that were being used to mine bitcoin and other virtual currencies escaped custody and fled Tuesday on a passenger plane that a witness said also carried the remote North Atlantic nation's prime minister. Police said surveillance video showed a suspect they identified as Sindri Thor Stefansson boarding a flight to Sweden at Iceland's international airport in Keflavik. They said he traveled under a passport in someone else's name. "He had an accomplice," Police Chief Gunnar Schram told Visir, an online news outlet. "We are sure of that." Investigators think Stefansson left the low-security prison where he recently had been transferred through a window early Tuesday. Guards did not report him missing until after the flight to Sweden had taken off. Stefansson was among 11 people arrested this year for allegedly stealing the powerful computers in one of Iceland's biggest thefts. The stolen equipment, which still is missing, has been valued at almost $2 million. Icelandic media have dubbed the case the "Big Bitcoin Heist." If the equipment is used for its original purpose to create new bitcoins the thieves could turn a massive profit in an untraceable currency without ever selling the items. The escapee was being held at the Sogn prison in rural southern Iceland, about 59 miles from the airport. The prison is unfenced and inmates there have telephone and internet access. Stefansson had been in custody since February. He was moved to the open prison 10 Continue reading >>

Review: Bitcoin Heist (vietnam, 2016)

Review: Bitcoin Heist (vietnam, 2016)

Explore and connect the world through a cinematic lens "Bitcoin Heist" is an action-packed digital heist movie that showcases Vietnam's modernity. Truth be told, Bitcoin Heist is the first Vietnamese movie Ive seen. Despite having a population of 90 million, Vietnam has only recently started making blockbusters that can hold their own against imports, thanks in part to returning diaspora talent. Bitcoin Heist appears to be part of that trend. Helmed by Vietnamese-American director Ham Tran, the film is a rollicking action-thriller that showcases a vibrant, modern Vietnam in the process. Bitcoin Heist is like a combination of Oceans Eleven and Now You See Me, but with bitcoin. The films main character is Dada (Kate Nhung), an Interpol agent who assembles an unconventional team of criminals in order to nab a digital currency-laundering mobster called The Ghost. Dadas team includes a middle-aged forger and his cat-thief daughter, a mob accountant, a female hacker/pro-gamer (played by rapper performed for Barack Obama), and a flamboyant magician/pickpocket (played by Vietnamese-Australian Petey Majik Nguyen, whos an actual magician). You definitely dont need to be a digital currency enthusiast or even know what bitcoin is to enjoy Bitcoin Heist. If anything, the usage of bitcoin as a plot device is more a signal of the films aspirations at modernity. Such aspirations are, intentionally or not, reflective of Vietnams own. After three decades of economic liberalization and socialist-oriented market economy, Vietnam is starting to imagine itself within the same club as economically ascendant, technologically advanced Asian countries like South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Being a member of this club requires a certain level of cultural sophistication, a certain cosmopolitan life Continue reading >>

Blu-ray Review: Bitcoin Heist Is Too Clever For Its Own Good

Blu-ray Review: Bitcoin Heist Is Too Clever For Its Own Good

Hackers have become the bank robbers in the new world of crypto-currency. In order to catch the most wanted hacker, The Ghost, an Interpol special agent assembles a team of thieves to plan the ultimate heist. But as any good criminal knows, there is no honor among thieves. Bitcoin Heist is an amalgamation of Oceans Eleven and Now You See Me 2, movies that I thoroughly enjoyed but where this film falls down, is not knowing what genre it wants to be. It starts off as an action movie, then turns into a buddy-cop flick, and then a heist movie, followed by betrayal and ultimately, revenge. Director Ham Tran desperately wants his movie to be an assortment of various shooting styles, from American to Tsui Hark and early John Woo but it fails BECAUSE of this aspect. By all means, mix your story up, baffle the viewer, but by the end of your story, you need to explain everything that has transpired. Here, Ham Tran delivers moments of brilliance but the film is let down by the constantly expanding story exposition which steadily increases with each new scene, filling the script to capacity and eventually, causing it to buckle under its own weight. Sometimes, less is more. For those not familiar with Bitcoin, it is a new currency that was created back in 2009 by an anonymous source using the alias Satoshi Nakamoto. There are no middlemen (banks) and no transaction fees and because of this, it is considered illegal in many countries. In Bitcoin Heist, a hacker known as The Ghost, is stealing bitcoin currency from banks and wealthy people. After a transaction meeting between a prospective client and Ky (Veronica Ngo), an assassin who works for the Ghost, goes horribly wrong, Ky manages to escape along with the Ghosts accountant, Phc (Thanh Pham). With her bitcoin wallet intact but h Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Heist Movie Gets Positive Ratings So Far

Bringing more attention to the world of Bitcoin and digital currency is not always an easy task, and taking to the big screen might be a good idea. Over in Vietnam, the first Bitcoin-themed movie has hit local theaters, and Bitcoin Heist seems to be getting some positive reactions so far. Also read: Uphold Launches Real-time Trading For Select Digital Currencies It is not the first time Bitcoin is translated to visual media, as there have been various documentaries and short movies in the past. But it is the first time a full-fledged movie revolving around Bitcoin makes it to the theaters in Vietnam. Ham Tran directs the movie, and although hardly anyone will know any of the actors, Bitcoin Heist is getting some good ratings so far. There is no denying Bitcoin is a very technical concept, and explaining the importance of this digital currency is not as easy as one might think. Although Bitcoin has made an appearance in various tv shows over the past few years, the currency has always been associated with illegal activity and the deep web. Bitcoin Heist is an entertaining movie that can attract a lot of attention to the Bitcoin ecosystem. Although the story revolves around a hacker wanted by Interpol, who dabbles around in Bitcoin payments, the trailer does not necessarily indicate any negative connotation about Bitcoin itself. In fact, this project could be quite beneficial to Bitcoin in general as it associates an action movie with the popular digital currency. So far, the overall rating for this movie on IMDB is 6.7, which is not too shabby considering. Bitcoin heist will only be released in Vietnam. Moreover, it is not the first or most original action movie to be put on the big screen, but the trailer seems to indicate it is well worth the money to watch it. Unfort Continue reading >>

The four major risks to bitcoin which could send price CRASHING Bitcoin's price is down $480 to $11,217 at the time of press as the crypto community responds to the deluge of regulatory threats coming from Davos last week, and a gunpoint robbery in a picturesque Oxfordshire village on Monday, revealed in the Sunday papers. Last Monday, in the quaint village of Moulsford in South Oxfordshire, four armed robbers forced their way into the home of a City of London finance chief and forced him to transfer an unknown quantity of bitcoin, worth around $10,000 at the time. Wearing balaclavas, the Mail on Sunday reported that the men kicked down the front door and forced their way into the home of Danny Aston, 30. The armed men reportedly tied up a woman and kept a baby outside in a pram while forcing Mr Aston to transfer the bitcoin. A woman said: "I saw four young men in black tracksuits with the hoods pulled up, crossing the road to the property where it took place." She added: "They were aged 18 to 25, dark-skinned and super-fit. They jumped over the fence on the other side of the road. I didnt see any gun, but thats what people locally are saying and that the men wore balaclavas which I didnt see either, just the hoodies pulled up." Although the heist is the first of its kind in the UK, in December a prominent Russian blockchain expert was kidnapped at gunpoint in Kiev, Ukraine. The reports claim that he was dragged into a black Mercedes-Benz by men wearing balaclavas. He was released by his kidnappers in Ukraine after getting more than $1m (750,000) in bitcoin as a ransom, an adviser to the Ukrainian interior minister confirmed. Here's a report on the growing relationship between bitcoin and Switzerland . Olga Feldmeier, CEO of blockchain startup SMART VALOR argues that t Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Heist Adds $77 Million To Total Hacked Hauls Of $15 Billion

Bitcoin Heist Adds $77 Million To Total Hacked Hauls Of $15 Billion A highly professional heist sucked millions dollars in bitcoin out of Slovenian website NiceHash, the latest in a series of big cryptocurrency thefts. Slovenian website NiceHash , which lets users buy and sell computer time for mining cryptocurrency, lost about $77 million when its payment system was hacked in a highly professional heist, it told Reuters. In total, about 980,000 bitcoins, worth about $15 billion in todays skyrocketing prices, have been stolen from exchanges over the currencys lifetime, the wire service estimates. But exactly who is behind the theft, or other recent cryptocurrency heists, is unclear. In September, security firm FireEye reported it had seen signs of North Korea targeting South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges, but given cryptocurrencys relative anonymity and rapidly rising prices, exchanges are likely natural targets for skilled digital criminals from around the world. Chart of the wallet used in the NiceHash heist, with a value at press time of $77.89 million [Image: Bitinfocharts .] Other recent cryptocurrency thefts of note: Last month, Tether , which distributes cryptocurrencies tied to the value of the dollar and other traditional currencies, reported close to $31 million in its dollar-linked coin was stolen. It pushed out updates to its software to freeze the stolen tokens from further transfer. In a stranger incident last month, a bug in wallet provider Parity enabled a user to take control of, then permanently freeze, roughly $300 million in ethereum. Parity has said its investigating ways the ethereum codebase could be patched to recover the funds. In July, cryptocurrency trading platform CoinDashs website was hacked during an initial coin offering, causing would Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Heist (2016) Review

Bitcoin Heist (2016) Review

Bitcoin Heist | Blu-ray & DVD (Well Go USA) Cast: Kate Nhung, Thanh Pham, Petey Majik Nguyen,Suboi, Jayvee Mai, Lam Thanh My, Teo Yoo, Veronica Ngo Before we get to talking about what kind of movieBitcoin Heistis, Im going to start off the same way that the film does by attempting to explain what bitcoins are. Bitcoins are a digital currency with no central repository and no national fingerprint. Its a peer-to-peer exchange system with a public digital ledger that all users are expected to help maintain. Bitcoins are encrypted and untraceable, as far as I understand, and are a favorite form of currency on the Dark Web for hackers and all manner of other secretive professions. Bitcoins are flashy, mysterious, and new to the general public. And were just starting to hear more about Ransom Ware and the Dark Web this year in the news. All three of these new internet-based concepts figure into the Vietnamese thrillerBitcoin Heist. And in that respect, I gotta give writer/editor/director Ham Tran (Journey from the Fall) some credit, because hisBitcoin Heistmakes pretty good use of the new tech to tell his story. With the exception of perhaps TVsMr. Robot, Im unaware of other dramas that have featured the tech so prevalently for storytelling purposes. Its the sort of thing you can imagine Hollywood couldve gotten on top of, thrown an A-List movie star on the poster, and called it topical and timely. InBitcoin Heist, a dangerous Dark Web millionaire known as the Ghost is being tracked by Detective Dada (Kate Nhung). She manages to catch the Ghosts accountant, Phuc (Thanh Pham), but not without getting into a shootout that claims the lives of multiple officers and suspects. The police chief who is also Dadas dad takes her badge and gun, saying it was a meaningless sacrifice con Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Heist With A Twist: This Time It's Servers That Were Stolen

Bitcoin Heist With A Twist: This Time It's Servers That Were Stolen

Icelandic police have cuffed 11 people in connection with four raids on data centres that targeted cryptocurrency mining equipment. The raids started in December 2017 when three data centres were cracked in December. Another raid took place in January. 600 servers went missing in the heists. Icelandic police kept the raids secret while they pursued their investigations. Those efforts culminated in 11 arrests and an appearance before the Reykjanes District Court last Friday. Two of the 11 were detained and the matter held over for another day. The 600 servers are all still missing, the Associated Press reports. Which is no surprise: x86 kit is pretty generic. The real prize inside a bitcoin-mining rig is either GPUs, RAM or nicely fast solid-state disks. Those components are all tiny compared to servers and could probably have been posted out of Iceland piecemeal without much hassle. Iceland has become something of a hub for demanding workloads like cryptocurrency mining because cheap energy and low ambient temperatures make it a low-cost destination to run data centres and the kit inside them. The nation also has a low crime rate. Continue reading >>

"big Bitcoin Heist": 600 Powerful Computers Stolen In Iceland

"Big Bitcoin Heist": 600 powerful computers stolen in Iceland REYKJAVIK, Iceland -- Some 600 computers used to "mine" bitcoin and other virtual currencies have been stolen from data centers in Iceland in what police say is the biggest series of thefts ever in the North Atlantic island nation. Some 11 people were arrested, including a security guard, in what Icelandic media have dubbed the "Big Bitcoin Heist." A judge at the Reykjanes District Court on Friday ordered two people to remain in custody. The powerful computers, which have not yet been found, are worth almost $2 million. But if the stolen equipment is used for its original purpose -- to create new bitcoins -- the thieves could turn a massive profit in an untraceable currency without ever selling the items. "This is a grand theft on a scale unseen before," said Olafur Helgi Kjartansson, the police commissioner on the southwestern Reykjanes peninsula, where two of the burglaries took place. "Everything points to this being a highly organized crime." Three of four burglaries took place in December and a fourth took place in January, but authorities did not make the news public earlier in hopes of tracking down the thieves. Bitcoin is a kind of digital money that isn't tied to a bank or a government. It has been hugely volatile, posting some dizzying intra-day rises and falls over the past year or so. The price of a single bitcoin rocketed to nearly $20,000 late last year and then plunged early this year. On Friday, it was trading just below the $11,000 mark. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies rely on the blockchain, the name given to the public, distributed ledgers which track the coins' ownership. The Bitcoin ledger is powered by "miners," so-called because they throw computational power into the system, occasi Continue reading >>

Vietnams very own version of Oceans Eleven Probably one of the most Hollywood-like productions coming out of Asia, Bitcoin Heist is a film destined to succeed, at least commercially. Special agent Dada is set on catching Interpols most wanted hacker, an individual who calls himself The Ghost, and has made a fortune in Bitcoins, through ransomware. She orchestrates a large operation targeting two of Ghosts associates, his accountant named Phuc and one of his henchwomen, Ky. The mission goes horribly wrong, ending up with Ky and a number of police officers dead, and Phuc in custody. Furthermore, during the operation, a hacker ends up in a coma after he succeeded in stealing 30.000 bitcoins from Kys phone. His sister, Vi, also a hacker, barely survives and has to tend to her brother. Dada decides to go after The Ghost without the help of the police and in that purpose, she assembles a group of skilled thieves and criminals of every kind to help her. The team includes Jack Magique, a professional magician and pickpocket, but also her former boyfriend; a forger named Luhan and his little daughter Linh, who has acrobatic skills and is also a thief; Phuc and Vi, who is set on revenge for her brother. Their target is Thomas, a Korean-German bon viveur, whom they have identified as The Ghost. All of them together conceive an intricate plan in order to surpass his safety measures and receive proof of his wrongdoings. Ham Tran directs, pens, and edits a film very similar to Oceans Eleven, both in script and aesthetics, with the obvious purpose of commercial success. In that fashion, the script entails sexy women with guns, handsome protagonists, some comic relief scenes, a cute girl, gunfights, a boat chase, explosions, a plot twist, some romance, and a little drama, in a true pa Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Heist (2016) Directed By Ham Tran Reviews, Film + Cast Letterboxd

Feels like a foreign version of the Ocean's movies because this is every bit as slick, outlandish, and fun as those. However, the writing here is less than stellar, the comedy scarcely works, the plot is predictable at best, and some of the editing/sound design can be very distracting and annoying. They clearly only have an inkling of an idea of what a Bitcoin actually is, but it doesn't really matter. In fact, at times it feels like a parody of itself. Bitcoin Heist is an enjoyable heist movie without many dull moments. It's on Netflix, so check it out! Bitcoin Heist is a movie that surprisingly doesn't mention the word "blockchain" even once, but features a "League of Legends champion" who is also a hacker. To be absolutely clear: in no way is this a good movie. The action, the heists, and all the product placement are really dumb and low-budget, and the plot is more often confusing than clever. Despite that, it's easy to enjoy and laugh at all the little surprises and twists it managed to pack in. It has that Bad Boys 2 quality of going places when you least expect it. Totally a drunk movie night kind of watch. Feels like a foreign version of the Ocean's movies because this is every bit as slick, outlandish, and fun as those.
