[Bitcoin-segwit2x] Segwit2x Final StepsMike Belshe mike at bitgo.comWed Nov 8 16:58:41 UTC 2017 The Segwit2x effort began in May with a simple purpose: to increase theblocksize and improve Bitcoin scalability. At the time, the Bitcoincommunity was in crisis after nearly 3 years of heavy debate, and consensusfor Segwit seemed like a distant mirage with only 30% support among miners.Segwit2x found its first success in August, as it broke the deadlock andquickly led to Segwits successful activation. Since that time, the teamshifted its efforts to phase two of the project - a 2MB blocksize increase. Our goal has always been a smooth upgrade for Bitcoin. Although westrongly believe in the need for a larger blocksize, there is something webelieve is even more important: keeping the community together.Unfortunately, it is clear that we have not built sufficient consensus fora clean blocksize upgrade at this time. Continuing on the current pathcould divide the community and be a setback to Bitcoins growth. This wasnever the goal of Segwit2x. As fees rise on the blockchain, we believe it will eventually becomeobvious that on-chain capacity increases are necessary. When that happens,we hope the community will come together and find a solution, possibly witha blocksize increase. Until then, we are suspending our plans for theupcoming 2MB upgrade. We want to thank everyone that contributed constructively to Segwit2x,whether you were in favor or against. Your efforts are what makes Bitcoingreat. Bitcoin remains the greatest form of money mankind has ever seen, and we remain dedicated to protecting and fostering its growth worldwide. How Bitcoin Cash Reaped The Rewards Of The Segwit2x Cancellation

How Bitcoin Cash Reaped The Rewards Of The Segwit2x Cancellation

Although bitcoin investors were eagerly anticipating the introduction of the long-awaited SegWit2x fork, which was designed to split the chain once again, the event was canceled amid raging disagreements within the community. While some community members believed bigger blocks are needed to strengthen the currency function of bitcoin, traditionalists argued it would reduce bitcoins crucial decentralization attribute. In the end, the inability to form a consensus led to the cancellation of SegWit2x, spurring substantial gains in bitcoins younger peer Bitcoin Cash (BCH) , and sparking a shift in sentiment. One of the perceived benefits of a hard fork amongst cryptocurrency market participants is the opportunity to receive a portion of the new currency resulting from the split. In the case of the SegWit2x plan, the hard fork would have resulted in the emergence of two currencies, bitcoin and the newer bitcoin2x. In the leadup to the proposed fork, individuals who missed out on Augusts bitcoin cash fork piled into bitcoin hoping to receive the same amount of its new relative. Bitcoin2x found itself listed in many exchanges before the actual rollout, helping market participants ascertain market depth during the initial price discovery process. However, much to the dismay of hopeful bitcoin holders, SegWit2x suffered from a lack of consensus , resulting in its ultimate termination. While the cancellation of the fork highlighted the true power of the bitcoin community and network to engage in a democratic decision-making process, the community also felt aftershocks. Some of the money that had moved into bitcoin changed teams, resulting in a net gain for both currencies. The lesser realized aspect of this event was a greater demand within the community for bitcoin cash and its Continue reading >>

Segwit2x Is Happening, Heres What You Need To Know

Another weekend, another fork. You know how the song goes, Everybody Wants to Rule the World. Looks like SegWit2X is going ahead and will happen between 6PM and 8PM UTC (tonight). (NOTE: Several countdown clocks still are showing SegWit2X data based on block 494784, which is no longer the correct one. 2X has not been activated yet at the time of this writing (block 494789). ) But hadnt it been cancelled? Well, yes and no. We now know it wasnt really cancelled, but was simply a temporary strategic retreat. During the cancellation announcement, the kind folks behind the 2X fork were already planning last weeks attack. All while telling the BTC community everything was ok: BCH community needs to learn a hard lesson. Be friend with other competing coins, learn from them, and make BCH better. Dont play hatred, dont wish competing coins ill. Just wish and try to make BCH better. Coincidentally, AntMiner moved their hashrate from BTC to BCH exactly while their CEO was tweeting this: Time of Jihan Wu Tweet and Declining Hashrate Chart Courtesy of Fork.LOL So Mr Wu was turning all his mighty AntMiners away from BTC at the same time he was typing Dont play hatred, dont wish competing coins ill.. In the meantime, the mainstream media attributes the BTC price dip to the SegWit2x cancellation (LOL. Its the hashrate, stupid! James Coinville). The cryptocurrency community has learned to live with these frequent attacks, but usually not from the guy who controls tens of % of the worlds total hashrate. That is the main difference between previous attacks and last weeks Bitcoin Cash flippening attempt: moving the amount of hashrate Mr Wu controls does have significant impact on the whole network, as we saw reflected in the number of unconfirmed txs throughout the past week. So whats dif Continue reading >>

Reddit: The Front Page Of The Internet

I'm, personally, ambivalent on the blocksize. I see pros and cons on both sides. I do really hope that the segwit tech itself moves forward so we can remove lots of data from the main chain and get fees down to reasonable amounts again. I predict that if segwit does not deliver on it's promise to solve the full blocks, a size increase fork will be back on the table. In the mean time: let's show the world that a giant, anarchistic-ish project, representing billions of worth, can actually innovate and move forward. The way I understand it, blocks are reaching their limits, so "Bitcoin becomes full": fees increase and transactions take longer to get through. If at all. So, in order to solve that, either you increase what can go into one block, or you move many transactions from those blocks into other chains. For example, two people using the same platform, don't need their transaction to be on the main blockchain, instead, they could use the platforms' chain, instead. This moves many potential payments off the main chain. Another way to free space up. Segwit doesn't save space, it accounts for used space in a different way. For example passengers end up taking the same volume and weight of luggage whether it is stored in the hold or in the flight cabin. So it is with segwit. In fact most variations of segwit transactions use more space than regular transactions. As for fees and the way they are calculated, that's another example of claims Vs reality. The reality is that segwit transactions are subsided by regular ones since core developers are vitally concerned with long term storage costs ... That, and enabling a transaction format that will boost the profits of their planned sidechairs products. You may have guessed I'm not a fan of segwit, please do your own reading f Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Supporters Welcome Segwit2x Cancellation

Bitcoin Supporters Welcome Segwit2x Cancellation

Bitcoin Supporters Welcome SegWit2x Cancellation Join our community of 10 000 traders on Hacked.com for just $39 per month. Cryptocurrency supporters generally welcomed the cancellation of SegWit2x in the wake of disagreement among developers and miners over the proposed solution to the need for a larger bitcoin block size. Crypto observers generally believe the fork would have had a negative impact on bitcoin. Bitcoins price has witnessed some volatility since the cancellation was announced. A short-term spike to an all-time high just below $7,900 in response to the news was followed by a flash crash . The bitcoin price dropped 4 percent , falling from $7,408 on Wednesday to $7,143 early Thursday. Many traders had maintained larger bitcoin positions in anticipation of the SegWit2x airdrop of bitcoins that was expected following the fork. The fork cancellation dashed hopes of free coins, causing traders to rebalance their portfolios to include more altcoins. As a result, altcoins registered gains on Thursday, as multiple top-tier coins posted double-digit price increases and capital flowed back into their markets from bitcoin. Several observers believe the cancellation is in the cryptocurrencys best interest. When 2x was called off, it became immediately clear theres greater consensus for a single bitcoin blockchain, and therefore there is greater value retained in the bitcoin ecosystem, Ned Scott, CEO of Steemit, a blockchain based social platform, said in a prepared statement. Many cryptocurrency advocates see forks as problematic. While occasional forks due to deep philosophical differences are inevitable, habitual forks damage the network effect of any blockchain and undermines security and faith in the system, said Bharath Rao, CEO of Leverj, a platform for crypto Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Hard Fork Called Off, Averting Major Disruptions And Turbulence In Cryptocurrency

Bitcoin Hard Fork Called Off, Averting Major Disruptions And Turbulence In Cryptocurrency The Bitcoin community has been in a fight over the past three years that in recent months escalated to an all-out warover the seemingly trivial question of how to allow more transactions through the network. In May, two groups teamed up to force a compromise that would push past the stalemate but left out of a critical constituent -- Bitcoin's main developers -- in order to do so. Their solution, a so-called hard fork, had the potential to split the network and create two competing chains, and the possibility has fueled acrimony in the Bitcoin world for months. With the hard fork looming just a week and a day away, that coalition called off its plans Wednesday in a brief email sent by the lead developer on the team planning to hard fork, nicknamed SegWit2x for the two solutions it brought together in compromise (SegWit and a hard fork to a 2MB block): "Our goal has always been a smooth upgrade for Bitcoin. Although we strongly believe in the need for a larger blocksize, there is something we believe is even more important: keeping the community together. Unfortunately, it is clear that we have not built sufficient consensus for a clean blocksize upgrade at this time. Continuing on the current path could divide the community and be a setback to Bitcoins growth. This was never the goal of Segwit2x. ...We are suspending our plans for the upcoming 2MB upgrade." The price of Bitcoin jumped to around $7,800 on the news. The signers include some of the CEOs who led the SegWit2x effort: Mike Belshe, CEO of Bitcoin security company BitGo; Wences Casares, CEO of Bitcoin vault company Xapo; Jihan Wu, CEO of mining equipment manufacturer Bitmain; Jeff Garzik, CEO of blockchain enterprise comp Continue reading >>

All You Have to Know About the Upcoming Segwit2x Fork Ciprian V. | December 25, 2017 | Altcoin , Bitcoin , News , Reviews | 31 Comments Eventually, the Bitcoin fork that has been cancelled in November will finally take place the 28th of this month, which means that we should expect segwit2x to see day of light in less than a week. Do you remember the Bitcoin fork that has been cancelled in November? Eventually, a different team of people have decided to create their own version of Segwit2X. The fork will take place at block 501225, which is estimated to happen the 28th of this month. If youve been using Bitcoin lately, youve surely noticed the extremely high transaction fees and times. Personally, past month Ive been avoiding any BTC transactions because of that. According to statistics, the average transaction commission is about 15 USD dollars. This crisis isnt going anywhere by its own, which is why the community is actively looking for solutions. One of the available solutions is to implement segwit2x. Back in November, developers were not able to build enough consensus in the Bitcoin community to implement segwit2x. However, the idea has seen its share of support and eventually a team of three people have decided to carry this project on and release the hard fork December 28th. To receive the latest updates follow me on social media! To NOT Be Confused with Novembers Segwit2X The team working on todays fork is not the same that has been working on Novembers segwit2x. This also means that the new segwit2x has features a different algorithm than the Novembers one. The fact that the new project is called the same way has is confusing a lot of people, me including. Some community members say that th Continue reading >>

The Civil War In Bitcoin; Segwit2x Hard Fork Cancelled

The Civil War in Bitcoin; Segwit2x Hard Fork Cancelled Bitcoins Segwit2x hard fork which was scheduled to happen on 16th of November was cancelled due to a lack of consensus among the Bitcoin community. BitGo CEO and co-founder Mike Belshe, Xapo CEO Wences Casares, Bitmain co-founder Jihan Wu, Bloq CEO Jeff Garzik, Blockchain CEO Peter Smith and Shapeshift CEO Erik Voorhees, have announced the cancellation, while Belshe stating: Our goal has always been a smooth upgrade for Bitcoin. This was never the goal of Segwit2x we are suspending our plans for the upcoming 2MB upgrade. As the to upgrade the bitcoin network through Segwit in August 1, resulted split chain making a competitor blockchain Bitcoin Cash, the planned increase of block size through Segwit2x during November 16 unfortunately (fortunately) is cancelled now we have to wait and see the real implications in Bitcoin community and Bitcoin price, as it is hard to tell which way things will go. The intention behind increasing the block size was to make the bitcoin network perform better, as fees rise on the blockchain, it will eventually become obvious that on-chain capacity increases are necessary. Without the Segwit2x hard fork, we might see network congestion issues persist and higher transaction fees. Matt Corallo, a former Blockstream developer, now at ChainCode Labs, said: Lets take Segwit2xs failure as a learning experience Bitcoins community is strong, Continue reading >>

Closing The Curtains On Segwit2x And The Following Aftermath

Closing the Curtains On Segwit2x and the Following Aftermath In less than eight days Bitcoin network market participants were ready for the planned Segwit2x fork, canceled yesterday. Now cryptocurrency proponents everywhere are expressing opinions about the Segwit2x plan in general, and the working groups decision to give up on forking the protocol. Also Read: Openbazaar Sees a Variety of New Vendors After Privacy Enhancements Segwit2x: Failing to Build Sufficient Consensus It all started back in May when the venture capital firm, Digital Currency Group, announced the Segwit2x plan, which would activate Segregated Witness (Segwit), to be followed up three months later with a 2 MB block size increase. Segwit was activated this past August by a vast majority of miners, but following the implementation, the 2 MB hard fork became controversial. Up until the day before yesterday, according to Segwit2xs lead developer Jeff Garzik, the project was full steam ahead. However, on November 8, on the projects developers mailing list, Mike Belshe (Bitgo), Wences Casares (Xapo), Jihan Wu (Bitmain), Peter Smith (Blockchain) and Erik Voorhees (Shapeshift) revealed the team could not build consensus. Social Media and Crypto-Focused Reddit Forums Erupt Immediately following the announcement , social media and bitcoin-centric forums erupted with peoples opinions about the canceling of Segwit2x. The entire front page of the Reddit forum /r/bitcoin was littered with tweets from bitcoin luminaries like Charlie Shrem, Francis Pouliot, Jameson Lopp, and more. For instance, one such post highlights bitcoin developer Peter Todds statements, who mentions the six signatories left on the announcement email stating: In case you were wondering who to send the bill for the millions of dollars worth o Continue reading >>
