Why I Would Bet Against Bitcoin

Why I Would Bet Against Bitcoin

We're economists covering everything economics. Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own. I am not one of those economists who has been looking down his nose at Bitcoin from the start. As I argued back in 2013, I think the condescension that some economists bring to the topic of Bitcoin is an instinctive dismissal of anything with a whiff of anti-central banking. I have believed my friend Tim Lee when he argued Bitcoin is something worth thinking about for economists. Yet the Bitcoin bubble is now screaming too loudly to ignore. And it has revealed flaws about the cryptocurrency that I think will keep it from being more widely embraced as a currency and unit of exchange. What is a bubble, how do you know when there is a bubble, and when will a bubble pop? These are all very, very hard questions for economists. But a good sign that there is a bubble is when a large share of market participants are buying based on untenable assumptions. So what are the assumptions that bitcoin market participants have? Many, I believe, are buying because they think prices are going to continue to skyrocket, making this a "good investment." Iconducteda Twitter poll of Bitcoin buyers, and 72% of of the 79 respondents are purchasing because theywant to profit from rising prices . Let's dig into this assumption a bit. Why might Bitcoin continue to rise in price? It can't be because people simply view it as a good investment because it rises in price. This is a Ponzi scheme, and the number of people who think Bitcoin is a good investment simply because prices are rising is limited. I don't know how much longer that can go on for, but it must end eventually. And once prices stop rising rapidly, all the buyers who were purchasing based on the assumption of rapidly rising prices w Continue reading >>

What Is Token Trading?

What Is Token Trading?

Tokens like Bitcoin and Litecoin are usually priced in USD. We call this a currency pair, which a digital assets value is determined by its comparison to another currency. For example, the BTC/USD pair represents how much USD is required to buy one BTC, or how much USD will be received for selling one BTC. The same applies for pricing LTC with BTC, which is the amount of BTC a LTC worth. Token-to-token trading refers to exchanging a digital asset with another digital asset. If we price LTC with BTC, a LTC/BTC pair emerges. It represents how many BTC is required to buy one LTC, or how many BTC will be received for selling one LTC. For example: according to OKEx index on 18 Aug, 1LTC=0.0099BTC. There are currently 4 markets available in OKEx Token Trading: BTC, ETH, USDT & BCH markets. 2What are the differences between Token Trading and traditional fiat-to-token trading? Traditional fiat-to-token trading is the exchange between digital assets and fiat currency (e.g. USD). If you buy BTC with USD, and BTC rises afterwards, you can sell it back for more USD. If it drops, you can sell for less. For example, you buy 0.5BTC with 5,000 USD when 1BTC = 10,000USD, and it rises to 20,000USD afterwards. You may then sell your 0.5BTC for 10,000 USD. While Tokens Trading is pretty much the same, except fiat (USD) is replaced by token (BTC). For example, you buy 10ETH with 1BTC when 1ETH=0.1BTC, and it rises to 0.2BTC afterwards. You may then sell your 10ETH for 2BTC. Promotes exchange and circulation of tokens In traditional digital asset exchange platform, only fiat-to-token trading is available. If I want to buy ETH with BTC, I will have to sell BTC (fee applies) first and then buy ETH (fee applies). Service fee will be applied twice in the process. In Token Trading, we can buy ET Continue reading >>

Hi guys Im really lost when it comes to this can someone explain to me please? How do I know when I profit in a coin? Lets say I buy a coin at .3 n now its worth .5 am I up .2? But wat if during that time btc value went down 5%? Or if I look at the coin in usd value lets say I bought the coin at 3 dollars now its 5 dollar do I profit even if btc went from 8000 down to 7000? Also , when is it best to move btc to buy alts? N when is it best to move alts back to btc for some gains. Sorry Im new at this It depends on your goal. Is your goal to trade to make more BTC or trade to make more fiat? For me my goal is always make more BTC. If I made 0.2 BTC on a trade I would be happy with that. Exactly what @kryptokenzie stated. You need to figure out what your goal is. Do you want more USD or more BTC when trading alts. If you stick with just investing in BTC which is always advisable for new comers until they learn and get their feat wet it is easy as it just trades directly to the dollar. If you are trading alts then you are doing so normally with the hopes of getting more BTC which if that is your goal then it doesnt matter the USD value as you are just trying to accumulate more BTC. My goal is to build more btc. But its so hard to keep track or knowing if I profit or lose when the value of btc fluctuate. For example. I bought factom at 22 dollars for certain amount of btc. But now I want to sell it to break even n factom price is still 22 dollars but Im in negative with btc. Lets say I bought 5 factom for .05 btc at 22 dollars each now its still 22 but if I sell I only get .04? Sorry if Im confusing u all cuz I am myself hahaha Yeah if you want more BTC you have to price all your trades in BTC. Dont worry about USD amount. I have been fighting this scenario in my head on lo Continue reading >>

I Was Given 0.2 Bitcoin For My Birthday Last Year. They Might End Up Being My Most Valuable Asset. - Bitcoin

I was given 0.2 Bitcoin for my birthday last year. They might end up being my most valuable asset. My savings just lost 20% of its value in a day, and I can't get them out of the bank for several weeks, at which point I might be lucky if it's worth one tenth of what I put in. I am heavily tempted to leave the country even if it means leaving my family behind, but with the ban on buying foreign currency, my savings are worth as much as monopoly money once I cross the border. Last year I was given 0.2 Bitcoin as a birthday gift (when it was worth about $20) and now it's the only asset I have that I know will be worth anything tomorrow. Anyone who cries at Bitcoin's volatibility is too focused on the short term. At the very least, you have the hope of its value recovering after a fall; right now, my country's fiat currency is useless toilet paper. Edit: someone asked for proof that I'm from Argentina. Here's a picture of me waving my useless currency in front of my profile page: Continue reading >>

The story of bitcoin has started in 2009. Satoshi Nakamoto, the father of all cryptocurrencies have integrated many different existing ideas to create a new digital asset. After mining the first bitcoins, the value of BTC was first set by two individuals on a Bitcoin Talk thread in 2010. During the transaction, user Laszlo just paid 10000BTC for two Papa Johns pizza in Florida. At that time the 10000BTC worth about 40 USD. Things have changed rapidly ever since then, as one single bitcoin price has just recently hit the all time high value of 3000 USD. USD was the first currency that users were able to convert bitcoins into. The USD denominated bitcoin market has a daily trading volume of 152000 BTC per day, which accounts for almost 25% of the market. The total market capitalization of bitcoin is equal to the total number of BTC mined which is 16 million times the current bitcoin price. This market capitalization has recently hit the all time high of 50 billion USD when bitcoin prices were on the peak. The currency of USD is used worldwide, not just in the United States. Seven additional countries have adopted USD as a national currency and 89 more keep their local currency trading tight relative to USD. Many times USD is referred to as global reserve currency . The popularity of USD increased after the WWII when most countries switched to hold their reserves from gold standard to USD through the Bretton Woods agreement. The relative strength of the US economy supports the value of its currency. The current annual US inflation rate is 1.6% and it has been below 4% in the past 20 years. Exchanging USD to bitcoin and selling bitcoin for USD is very easy on the cryptocurrency market. Almost all trading platforms offer the solution to trade USD fiat currency against bitco Continue reading >>

The best way is probably to just hold the satoshis and hope the rise in value. Why is USD used to calculate satoshis value? Most BTC is traded in USD, so that is also a popular way to calculate satoshis value. Each bitcoin (BTC) is divisible to the 8th decimal place, so each BTC can be split into 100,000,000 units. Each unit of bitcoin, or 0.00000001 bitcoin, is called a satoshi. A Satoshi is the smallest unit of Bitcoin. Satoshi to Bitcoin is a Bitcoin converter/calculator.
