Web Mining - Monetize Your Website Through User Browsers

Last updated on February 22nd, 2018 at 12:07 pm Coinhive is a Monero (XMR) miner that runs on users web browsers when theyre visiting certain sites (dont worry, we dont employ this on 99Bitcoins). Recently, The Pirate Bay and CBSs Showtime were busted for running Coinhive on visitors browsers without their knowledge or consent. Before we get into a discussion about how to use Coinhive to monetize your content, lets first discuss why website owners might want to use it instead of the tried-and-true method of online revenue generation: ads. Software that blocks online advertisementsusually referred to as an ad blockeris rapidly becoming the standard. According to PageFair, a company dedicated to analyzing and mitigating this trend, about 615 million devices were using ad blockers at the end of 2016. The total number of internet users in mid-2016 was estimated to be 3.4 billion. This means that around 20% of users employ ad blockers. Because most ad blockers are free and easy to install, there are no immediate downsidesand plenty of upsidesfor their users. The most popular ad blockers include Adblock Plus , AdBlock , andmy personal recommendation uBlock Origin . Origin includes a filter for Coinhive to deny websites free access to your CPUs mining power. In addition to blocking ads and trackers via ad blocking methods, particularly proactive users may opt to go on the offensive with AdNauseam . This browser plug-in not only blocks ads but also spoofs clicks on them, generating false traffic to the detriment of advertisers conversion rates and thereby wasting their advertising budgets. The credibility and effectiveness of online advertising, in general, has been called into question lately by major companies such as Uber . Because the current business model of the internet Continue reading >>

Egypt May Be Secretly Mining Crypto By Hijacking Its Citizens Web Browsing

Egypt may be secretly mining crypto by hijacking its citizens web browsing Report says devices implemented by government are blocking political, human rights websites The Egyptian government has been secretly infiltrating its citizens computers and mining cryptocurrency, according to a report from The Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto. Under a scheme called AdHose, the government was sending internet users to either advertising sites, or to obsolete websites where, unbeknown to them, their computer was being misused, often to mine the Monero cryptocurrency, the report said. On a number of occasions, the middleboxes were apparently being used to hijack Egyptian internet users unencrypted web connections en masse, and redirect the users to revenue-generating content such as affiliate ads and browser cryptocurrency mining scripts, the report said. Read: Heres how much it costs to mine a single bitcoin in your country Users were allegedly directed en masse to cryptocurrency mining scripts, a system the university called spray mode or they were redirected from specific websites, a scheme called trickle mode. Websites included a former pornographic website (Babylon-X.com) and a religious site for the pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church (CopticPope.org). In a scan conducted by the university on Jan. 3, 2018, data from 5,702 IP addresses in Egypt found redirection to advertising sites close to 95% of the time. The report, which covered other regions in North Africa and the Middle East, found that government devices were being used to manipulate other state and private sector functions. In Egypt and Turkey, we also found that devices matching our Sandvine PacketLogic fingerprint were being used to block political, journalistic, and human rights content. Cloud Mining - How To Mine Bitcoin Without A Miner

Heres why you might want to consider cloud mining: A quiet, cooler home no constantly humming fans No equipment to sell when mining ceases to be profitable No ventilation problems with hot equipment Reduced chance of being let down by mining equipment suppliers. Heres why you might not want to consider cloud mining: Less fun (if youre a geek who likes system building!) Lower profits the operators have to cover their costs after all Contractual warnings that mining operations may cease depending on the price of bitcoin In general, there are three forms of remote mining available at the moment: Create a (general purpose) virtual private server and install your own mining software. Lease an amount of hashing power, without having a dedicated physical or virtual computer. (This is, by far, the most popular method of cloud mining.) We have previously covered ways to calculate mining profitability . However, the web services offered are designed to work with your hardware parameters, not cloud-mining parameters. Even so, you can still use these calculators by thinking clearly about the costs involved. Profitability calculators (for example, The Genesis Block)often ask for your electricity costs, and sometimes the initial investment in hardware. Effectively, you are being asked for your ongoing costs and your one-off investments. Therefore, since the provider, not you, is paying the electricity bills, you can enter the monthly mining bill in place of the electricity cost. The conversion process isnt completely straightforward, though. In the case of hardware miners, you can work out the monthly running cost by multiplying your electricity charge (ie: $ per KWh) by the power consumption of the unit and by a conversion factor of 0.744 (the ratio of seconds per month to joules o Continue reading >>

Coin Web Mining | Cryptonight Browser Miner | Coinhive Alternative

Our plan is to add support for more coins soon. Cryptonight algorithmis very compute heavy and while overall pretty slow was designed to run well on consumer CPUs. There are solutions to run the Cryptonight algorithm on a GPU instead, but the benefit is about 2x, not 10000x like for other algorithms used by Bitcoin or Ethereum. This makes Cryptonight a nice target for JavaScript and the Browser. Of course, when running through JavaScript performance still takes a bit of a toll, but it's not that bad. Our miner uses WebAssembly and runs with about 70% of the performance of a native Miner. For an Intel i7 CPU (one of the fastest desktop CPUs) you should see a hashrate of about 100 H/s. A native miner would get to 140 H/s. Lets compare Monero or Electroneumwith the more well-known Bitcoin. High-end miners nowadays use only special hardware for mining Bitcoin, and this gives them significant advantage over users that mine on standard PCs or laptops. China is known for Bitcoin farms where old warehouses are stuffed with custom hardware that runs 24/7. They comprise approximately 70% of the worlds Bitcoin miners. This means it is almost completely pointless for any ordinary computer user to attempt to participate in the mining process and waste electricity for Bitcoin. (There are also privacy issues with Bitcoin, as one can also check what balance is in a Bitcoin wallet without any restrictions.) In contrast, the Cryptonight mining algorithm was specifically designed to work on ordinary computers owned by the general public. The value of cryptocurrencies like Monero or Electroneum is going up dramatically. So far in 2017, the price of Monero has gone from $13 to over $370. Under these circumstances where the price of Monero can go up substantially in dollar terms over a rela Continue reading >>

Now, in just a few weeks, the number of sites deploying this kind of in-browser mining solution has skyrocketed. Initially, Coinhive was offering Monero (cryptocurrency) Javascript mining, but a host of clones have popped up in a matter of weeks. BleepingComputer reports that Coinhive has been joined by Crypto-Loot, MineMyTraffic, and JSEcoin, alongside Coin Have and PPoi (the latter for Chinese users). Google and Facebook earn more than half of all advertising revenue. Sales of dead-tree media have fallen dramatically over the past 20 years, but as of 2011, a print reader was worth 228x more than an online reader in terms of revenue generated per-reader. There are some very obvious pros to browser mining. If enough people adopted it, it could provide a financial revenue stream that allowed websites to reduce the kinds of advertising that people hate, improving reader retention and time spent on-site Continue reading >>

Home Bad Sites Cryptocurrency Web Miner Script Injected into AOL Advertising Platform Cryptocurrency Web Miner Script Injected into AOL Advertising Platform On March 25, we saw that the number of cryptocurrency web miners detected by the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network suddenly spiked. Our team tracked the web miner traffic and found that the bulk of it was linked to MSN[.]com in Japan. Further analysis revealed that malicious actors had modified the script on an AOL advertising platform displayed on the site to launch a web miner program. We notified the AOL team about our findings. AOL removed the injected miner and resolved the issue by March 27. Initial analysis of the AOL advertising cryptocurrency web miner As mentioned above, we found a web miner (detected by Trend Micro as COINMINER_COINHIVE.E-JS ) script that was injected into an AOL advertising platform. The compromised ads created a large number of web miners, which we detected and evaluated. We saw a 108% increase in unique web miner detections from March 24 to 25a significant jump that showed the effectiveness of the compromised advertising platform. The advertisement was on the front page of MSN[.]com (usually the default page of Microsofts browser), which is a possible factor that contributed to the dramatic increase in detections. This would have automatically redirected a significant number of users to the page. The web miner traffic was linked to the malicious domain www[.]jqcdn[.]download, which was created on March 18. We discovered that this incident could be classified as part of a campaign since there were four more domains associated with this particular mining script since 2017. Figure 1. Web-minining is conducted by special web-miners - programs that can work when the user's browser is switched on or runs in the background. Technically, such a program can be started on the computer with a line of JavaScript code written on the page, or the code itself is embedded into the browser extension. There are also viruses that make computer capacities work for crypto currency mining . Precedents: The Pirate Bay, SafeBrowse and hackers The principle of hidden mining have existed for a long time, however until recently there have been no attempts of mass introduction of such programs through web browsers. In September 2017, users of the PirateBay torrent tracker noticed that their computers were overloaded when loading certain pages. It turned out that the code on these pages started a remote program for mining on the computer. The owners of the torrent tracker admitted that they conducted a test of the new system, which could become an alternative source of revenue instead of advertising. Also in the SafeBrowse extension for Chrome, a hidden JavaScript-miner of Montero crypto currency embedded in the code was found. The developer of ESET antivirus company said that recently attacks on users' computers for the purpose of hidden mining were recorded. And all attacks come from one miner, 65.29% of the disrupted attacks fall on Russia, 21.95% on Ukraine, 6.49% on Belarus and 5.19% on Kazakhstan. The most popular cryptocurrencies for web mining Edit According to experts, the most popular cryptocurrencies mined by hackers with the help of foreign capacities are Monero , Litecoin and Feathercoin . The reason is that these are relatively "young" cryptocurrencies , the extraction of which does not require large computational resources or special technical equipment. Ther Continue reading >>

Browser-based Cryptocurrency Mining Makes Unexpected Return From The Dead

Browser-based Cryptocurrency Mining Makes Unexpected Return From The Dead

Browser-Based Cryptocurrency Mining Makes Unexpected Return from the Dead Once thought of as dead, browser-based cryptocurrency mining makes an unlikely return, coming back to haunt websites and their visitors. Browser-based cryptocurrency mining activity exploded in the last few months of 2017. After many years of deathly silence, the catalyst appears to be the launch of a new browser-based mining service in September by Coinhive. This service wraps everything up nicely in an easy-to-use package for website owners and has injected new life into an idea that was long thought of as dead and buried. Browser-based cryptocurrency mining is not new;it's been around since at least 2011. A surge in the cryptocurrency market in 2017, as well as availability of coins that are mineable using home hardware and easy-to-use JavaScript APIs, has led to a torrent of malicious browser-based mining affecting many well-known and lesser-known websites. Mobile devices have not been spared from cryptocurrency mining, as witnessed by a 34 percent increase in the number of mobile apps incorporating cryptocurrency mining code. Browser-based mining, as its name suggests, is a method of cryptocurrency mining that happens inside a browser and is implemented using scripting language. This is different compared to the more widely known file-based cryptocurrency mining approach which involves downloading and running a dedicated executable file. Browser-based mining dates back to May of 2011 when an innovative service called BitcoinPlus.com was initially launched back when Bitcoin was cheap and mining was easynot to be confused with another cryptocurrency known as Bitcoin Plus.org (XBC). That service was in many ways remarkably similar to its modern reincarnation, Coinhive. It used JavaScript code f Continue reading >>

Mining Crypto In A Browser Is A Complete Waste Of Time

Mining Crypto In a Browser Is a Complete Waste of Time Malware that surreptitiously mines cryptocurrency while you browse the web is big news right now literally in the case of news outlet Salon, which has enabled it as an opt-in feature. One thing that it certainly isnt, though, is big business. Every other day, media outlets seem to be running stories about the latest cryptojacking scams. While these tales are mostly true, the extent of the problem has been vastly overstated. Smart criminals arent covertly crypto mining in-browser, not because theyre incapable of doing so, but because even at scale it simply isnt profitable. Also read: Nuclear Engineers Arrested for Mining Cryptocurrency Using Government Supercomputer Last weekend, it emerged that the Browse Aloud web browser plugin had been hijacked, causing it to covertly mine cryptocurrency on around 5,000 computers. Among those affected were systems used by a number of British government bodies including the National Health Service and a student loans company. At the time, a spokesperson for the UKs National Cyber Security Centre said: NCSC technical experts are examining data involving incidents of malware being used to illegally mine cryptocurrencyGovernment websites will continue to operate securely. At this stage there is nothing to suggest that members of the public are at risk. Naturally members of the public werent at risk in any sense of the word. The only real side effects of having your browsing session cryptojacked are perhaps a slowdown in computing performance and the device heating up. The majority of web users wouldnt even be aware that anything was amiss. While relatively benign, as cyber attacks go, mining malware is still an inconvenience that no web user would reasonably be expected to tolerate Continue reading >>

How To Know If Websites Are Using Your Cpu To Mine Coins - Cnet

How To Know If Websites Are Using Your Cpu To Mine Coins - Cnet

Are your favorite websites mining Bitcoin? Here's how to find out Some websites might be using your CPU to mine cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin without your knowledge. Mining of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin can be lucrative. But there's a catch: it requires time and a lot of computing power. If you could somehow spread those computing demands out among hundreds and sometimes even thousands or millions of unknowing users, it would greatly reduce the cost and time of mining expensive coins. As nefarious as that sounds, it's exactly what several websites were discovered to be doing by IT security company ESET in September last year. Previously, criminals would go about hijacking someone else's computer to mine coins through a malicious program that was installed. But a more lightweight and less noticeable (at least from the user's perspective) way of doing it is by running a JavaScript file right from within the browser no exploits or vulnerabilities needed. Instead of infecting the users' computers, websites are being infected with malicious ads. All that needs to happen for mining to begin is that a user needs to visit an infected website with JavaScript enabled. Inherently, mining cryptocurrencies is not a bad thing. It's how transactions are processed. You can learn more about it in our cryptocurrency and blockchain explainer but, in short, when a cryptocurrency transaction is announced to a blockchain network, computers on that network begin solving complex mathematical puzzles to confirm the currency has not already been used. In exchange for the work, miners (people whose computers were used to process the transaction) are rewarded a small amount of cryptocurrency. With some cryptocurrencies -- such as Monero -- mining is relatively fast and simple and doesn't need Continue reading >>

As crypto-mining has gained popularity, the website owners are now using cryptocurrency mining scripts to use the CPU power of the visitors for earning profits. This has also inspired somedevelopers to come up with methods toblock cryptocurrency mining in the web browser via different methods. The Pirate Bay, the worlds most popular torrent website, was recently spotted testing a Monero cryptocurrency miner on their websites. The website confessed that it could be using coin mining in future to keep the website running. This was followed by some other reports of similar nature. This practice isnt new, but the Pirate Bay was the first popular website that was seen using a cryptocurrency miner. This has also fueled the ethics debate as the website owners are found to be keeping the visitors in the dark. However, I was surprised to notice that many users who commented on the article and Facebook didnt mind their favorite website using their CPU power to earn revenue. This could be due to the fact that torrent websites are home to tons of notorious advertising.
