As you may know, SXSW is a conference and festival that celebrates the convergence of the interactive, film, and the music industry. This year SXSW took place March 9th through 18th and attracted 300,000 people to Austin, TX. And, let me tell you, a big chunk of them were blockchain enthusiasts. On Sunday, Elon Musk was spotted with a copy of Julian Hosp s book Cryptocurrencies Explained Simply . There were 37 blockchain sessions scheduled as part of the conference. Complimenting SXSWs schedule, Crypto Summit , Initial Taco Offering , the World Tokenomic Forum , and Ethereal Lounge added several dozen more sessions on crypto and blockchain. The crypto and blockchain FOMO among individuals, startups, and enterprises was real. Heres a recap of what SXSW 2018 had to say about crypto and blockchain, in no particular order: Takeaway #1. Trustless World <> No one trustsanyone. The 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer Global Report was cited over and over again. The phrase trust is on the decline was shared across the board. Trustlessness was identified as the problem and blockchain as a solution. Source: 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer GlobalReport In a talk about Business on the Blockchain, Brian Behlendorf, Executive Director at Hyperledger, and Amber Baldet, Blockchain Lead at JP Morgan, proposed that blockchain can help address the concerns of a trustless world. The underlying hypothesis: blockchain enables trust in people through its transparent platform and decentralized verification system (of what is the truth). Sxsw 2018: Blockchain Could Make

Sxsw 2018: Blockchain Could Make "netflix Curator" Future Job, Says Expert

On Wednesday, the director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technologys Digital Currency Initiative sat down for a live interview to discuss how blockchain technology can be used to create a host of new jobs and businesses. Neha Narula believes that people need to open up their perception of the blockchain to more than just something that facilitates cryptocurrencies . She said that once people begin seeing it as a platform, like the internet, jobs like professional Netflix curator could become a reality. The blockchain basically makes it possible for people to transfer value currency or otherwise to anyone or anything they want, and that includes people who are great at finding stuff on Netflix. I think this can best be thought about with an analogy to the internet. This tech can integrate lots of different services so people can create media or content and get paid. The sky is the limit, explained Narula. You can imagine people becoming Netflix curators, and actually getting paid for that. You could follow people who are really good at finding the best shows on Netflix. The idea is that the internet has enabled a multitude of platforms that were never thought imaginable before the age of the web, so why cant the blockchain do the same thing? This digital ledger technology has the capability of taking the intermediaries out of the music industry and even hosting social media platforms . 7 Horror Movies Coming to Netflix in April 2018 While there are undoubtedly content creators and service providers benefiting from standard social media platforms now, Narula believes that the blockchain could take this a step further. Because of its ability to facilitate easy transfer of digital currency, it would make the perfect platform for the professional Netflix curators of the Continue reading >>

Blockchain Bros Are Taking Over Sxsw 2018, Because Of Course They Are

Blockchain bros are taking over SXSW 2018, because of course they are Ask any attendee of this year's South by Southwest , and they're bound to say they came across "a guy." When my friend and I asked that question to entrepreneurs and investors at an Andreessen Horowitz cocktail reception on the first Saturday of SXSW, we were told to find "Kyle." We ended up meeting "John." John Lin is an associate partner at Trinity Ventures. That night on the rooftop of Bob's Steak & Chop House in Austin, his friends and colleagues around him called him an expert in blockchain. But despite their verbal and physical enthusiasm, Lin did not come off as a blind champion of the technology. SEE ALSO: Berlin blockchain conference proves that dumb stock art is actually genius "I do think blockchain is a little bit overvalued, but long-term it will enable amazing technologies," Lin said. "Now its in this new form of digital currency, but in the future, it could enable much more, like real estate and ticketing." SXSW of yesteryear was dominated by mobile apps. It's where Twitter, Foursquare, and Meerkat had their viral moments. In 2018, the SXSW hype bubbled around blockchain with conversations on the best whitepapers, worst ICO scams , and cutest cryptokitties . More than ever before, blockchain-themed discussions were hosted throughout the annual conference. There were at least 38 official panels, along with side events run by software company Consensys, the Token Agency, and The Founders Organization's Initial Taco Offering. "At SXSWeveryone comes together around tacos, so tacos and crypto seemed like the perfect combo," Anoop Kansupada, cofounder of The Founders Organization, told Mashable. Sxsw 2018: The 5 Business Trends That Mattered

SXSW 2018: The 5 business trends that mattered From blockchain to augmented reality to the unexpected social network that was the hit of the show, here are the themes that dominated this year's event. This was my ninth time attending SXSW in the last 10 years, and while some say the event has lost its identity, I disagree. There was a renewed sense of energy this year, and most of the people I talked to had a specific purpose in mind for attending. At SXSW 2018, I found myself constantly sharing ideas with top-notch content creators. We weren't rushing to stand in line for hours to get into parties. We were collaborating, learning from each other, and making each other better. With that in mind, here are the five big business trends I found at SXSW 2018: LinkedIn was again a major player throughout the festival, with attendees customarily adding each other on LinkedIn during meetings in lieu of exchanging business cards. LinkedIn Learning was out in full force this year, doing professional headshots for attendees at the tradeshow. There was also a #LinkedInLocal meetupa global grassroots effort for people to get to know the folks behind the profile. Crypto folks came in from all over the world this year. At the same time the event was going on, Google announced they would no longer allow anything crypto-related to run ads in its space. This took a $60 billion bite out of the cryptocurrency industry overnight. Undeterred, some of the smartest minds in crypto got together all over town with their own parties, events, and speaking panels to strategize a way forward. This industry is showing up and growing up. CryptoFriends ran an outstanding 2 day summit highlighting the women of blockchain as well as a well-attended ICO pitch event followed by a live show of the Bad Cryp Continue reading >>

Ethereum, Crypto And Blockchain Tech Discussed At Sxsw 2018

Cryptocurrency and blockchain technology were two of the hottest topics of discussion during South by Southwest (SXSW) 2018. Conference organizers geared up for blockchain and cryptocurrency discussions last year, publically announcing that a new additionto the 2018 lineup wouldbe a series of sessions specifically focused on blockchain technology. This year, SXSW kicked off with a jam-packed keynote entitled Why Ethereum is Going to Change the World featuring Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin. During the panel, Lubin spoke with Forbes reporter Laura Shin about Ethereum and his new blockchain software technology company, ConsenSys. As the panel began, Shin gave a brief explanation of what blockchain technology can do, noting that the deeper, more interesting question now is, What is Ethereum? Lubin explained that Ethereum was created by Vitalik Buterin in 2013as a vision for a system that is scalable in terms of human action and as a general platform for decentralized applications. Since then, Ethereum has captured the worlds attention, acting as a decentralized governance tool that can be appliedto various industries, which is what Lubins new blockchain technology company, ConsenSys, is focused on achieving. We are building about 25 different platforms in various different industries, from music to health, in which we are really seeing the nature of business shifting. This is what we are calling the decentralized world wide web, or web 3.0, Lubin explained. Its a way of doing things that involves trusted transactions and automated agreements on Ethereum, but it also provides protocols for decentralized storage and decentralized heavy compute. Lubinnoted that ConsenSys is building a protocol-based open platform where different actors can use these open networks to introd Continue reading >>

Ai, Blockchain And Other Top Trends From 2018 Sxsw

Ai, Blockchain And Other Top Trends From 2018 Sxsw

AI, blockchain and other top trends from 2018 SXSW More than 70,000 professionals from all around the globe headed to Austin, Texas for this years South by Southwest (SXSW) to hear the latest tech news, trends and predictions for 2018 and beyond. Founded in 1987, SXSW is an annual conference for global professionals to network, explore and learn about emerging technologies through a packed schedule of panel discussions, speakers and feature sessions. I had the pleasure of attending this years conference, and I was impressed by the calibre of speakers. Some highlights for me include Elon Musk warning us about the threat of AI on mankind , Melinda Gates talking about the need to diversify the workforce, and the London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, stressing the need for major tech companies to be held more accountable for the spreading of fake news. Interestingly, regardless of the session type and speaker, four key themes stood out. 1. Artificial intelligence is here, and its here to stay While AI has been a hot topic for a few years now, its importance within businesses has evolved from a nice to have, to a required competency. In fact, according to a Forbes article , 70% of CIOs are either using or planning to use AI in their organizations in the coming year. This is particularly relevant for us at Vision Critical because we recently announced the acquisition of assets from Aida , a startup business that applies AI to customer experience. While AI is becoming more and more integrated into our personal and professional lives, it is essential to be aware of its limitations, the biggest being that it doesnt replace human intuition. Instead, AI should be used to help humanize tech and generate new insight and create associations with data sets. 2. Diversity matters in more ways than Continue reading >>

5 Trends From Sxsw 2018

5 Trends From Sxsw 2018

With South by Southwest (SXSW)Interactive 2018 largely behind us, we reflected on some key takeaways for thisyear. ImmersiveExperiencesFTW: With hundreds of brands showing up to activate at SXSW, its difficult to break through the noise. More than ever, the breakout brands this year created immersive experiences that brought attendees into another world like Westworld and Ready Player One . Diversity andInclusionare Top of Mind: No matter the topic or industry, most panel conversations included at least a mention or nod to #MeToo and/or #TimesUp . As the tech industry at-large grapples with righting its reputation fora lack of diversity,SXSW (its general attendee profile not all that diverse itself) served as a moment to discuss solutions. Everyone is talking about AI: From panels to activations , artificial intelligence was on everyones mind, from discussing its potential and implications to predicting how it will shape industries such as healthcare, finance and customer service. Blockchain or not? While previous SXSW festivals have been defined by the breakout mobile app think Twitter, Foursquare and Meerkat this year blockchain was the technologygettingfunding and attention, but not everyone was on board . We also heard that itisoverhyped and its reputation is bigger than its potential. In fact, Edelmans own SXSW Trust Barometer special report showed that this community is less trusting of blockchain than global audiences. Time will tell. Welcome to the U.S.: This year saw more international destinations coming to SXSW to position themselves as growing tech and music hubs. There wereactivations from Brazil , Canada , China , Northern Ireland , Peru andothers, making it clear that SXSW is increasingly a global stage. If youre interested in being at SXSW 2019, dont forg Continue reading >>
