Crypto Enthusiasts Flock to Puerto Rico for Its First-Ever Major Blockchain Conference Puerto Rican officials see being a part of the expanding crypto market as being a win-win situation for investors and the U.S. territory. Bitcoin enthusiasts may be ending the week feeling a bit lousy about the cryptos price performance, but for those attending a conference in Puerto Rico, the mood is likely a bit more lively. Called the Blockchain Unbound conference, the three-day event was held in San Juan from March 14 through March 16. Puerto Rico Lures Blockchain Industry To Help Fund Its Comeback

Puerto Rico lures blockchain industry to help fund its comeback Tax exemptions are helping to lure businesses and individuals to the island to invest in blockchain technology. Puerto Rico's government will form an advisory council to focus on developing blockchain businesses on the island. Blockchain Unbound, a three-day conference, just hosted 800 start-up founders, bankers, hedge-fund investors and others, and the proceeds from the event will go to hurricane relief efforts. Published 12:32 PM ET Fri, 16 March 2018 A couple walks on the beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Nearly six months after Hurricane Maria decimated Puerto Rico, thousands of crypto enthusiasts have descended upon San Juan for a string of blockchain and crypto conferences that the island's government is hoping will finally give the struggling economy the boost it needs. Puerto Rico's financial woes have been well-telegraphed. After a decade of recession, it is restructuring a large portion of its $73 billion in outstanding debt in the largest U.S. municipal bankruptcy. The storm, a nearly Category 5 hurricane, dealt the commonwealth another massive blow in September, and the damage threatened to set the island back even more. But many blockchain companies are now looking at Puerto Rico as a viable hub for the rapidly growing crypto industry. The island's government has offered attractive tax incentives, seeing a unique opportunity to help boost its depressed economy. "Before the natural disaster, the hurricane, we were already targeting Puerto Rico to become a world leader not only a regional leader, but a world leader in export services and technology," said Manuel Laboy, the secretary of Puerto Rico's Department of Economic Development and Commerce. "That was part of the vision that Gov. (Ricardo) R Continue reading >>

Cryptocurrency Investors Flock To Puerto Rico Investment Summit

February 12, 2018 / 11:03 PM / 5 days ago Cryptocurrency investors flock to Puerto Rico Investment Summit SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Reuters) - Puerto Ricos annual investment summit, a two-day conference to woo investors to the bankrupt U.S. territory and the first since Hurricane Maria devastated the island, sported some new faces, particularly from the fast-growing cryptocurrency world. The ranks of attendees and panelists on Monday were notably light on traditional mainstays, such as hedge fund creditors that hold the islands $71.5 billion in debt. Filling in some of the gaps were cryptocurrency investors, including Michael Terpin, who told the crowd at the Puerto Rico Convention Center he was the first from the crypto world to move to the island in 2016. Terpin, who also runs a public relations firm that works with cryptocurrency investors, said the industry is keen to take advantage of tax breaks under Puerto Ricos Acts 20 and 22 that benefit wealthy job creators who move to Puerto Rico from other jurisdictions. I hate it when I hear a talented person has to leave Puerto Rico because theres no jobs here, Terpin said. We are bringing jobs. Puerto Rico is battling the largest bankruptcy in U.S. government history, $120 billion in combined pension and bond debt, and the effects of Hurricane Maria, its worst natural disaster in 90 years which killed dozens and decimated an already-weak infrastructure in September. About 50 cryptocurrency entrepreneurs have relocated to Puerto Rico over the last year or two, and Terpin said he predicts that number will rise to 500 in the next 12 months. The island will host three separate cryptocurrency conferences over the next six weeks. Speaker Brock Pierce, co-founder of Blockchain Capital, a venture capital firm investing in blockchai Continue reading >>

Making A Crypto Utopia In Puerto Rico

Making A Crypto Utopia In Puerto Rico

Technology |Making a Crypto Utopia in Puerto Rico Brock Pierce inside the former Childrens Museum in Old San Juan, P.R., which he and his colleagues hope to make part of a crypto utopia where the money is virtual and the contracts are all public. Credit Erika P. Rodriguez for The New York Times SAN JUAN, P.R. They call what they are building Puertopia. But then someone told them, apparently in all seriousness, that it translates to eternal boy playground in Latin. So they are changing the name: They will call it Sol. Dozens of entrepreneurs, made newly wealthy by blockchain and cryptocurrencies , are heading en masse to Puerto Rico this winter. They are selling their homes and cars in California and establishing residency on the Caribbean island in hopes of avoiding what they see as onerous state and federal taxes on their growing fortunes, some of which now reach into the billions of dollars. And these men because they are almost exclusively men have a plan for what to do with the wealth: They want to build a crypto utopia, a new city where the money is virtual and the contracts are all public, to show the rest of the world what a crypto future could look like. Blockchain, a digital ledger that forms the basis of virtual currencies, has the potential to reinvent society and the Puertopians want to prove it. For more than a year, the entrepreneurs had been searching for the best location. After Hurricane Maria decimated Puerto Ricos infrastructure in September and the price of crypto currencies began to soar , they saw an opportunity and felt a sense of urgency. So this crypto community flocked here to create its paradise. Now the investors are spending their days hunting for property where they could have their own airports and docks. They are taking over hotels and a Continue reading >>

Puerto Rico Aims To Attract Blockchain Startups With New Council

Puerto Rico Aims to Attract Blockchain Startups With New Council Puerto Rico's government has created an advisory council aimed at spurring the development of blockchain businesses on the island. The move was announced Thursday during the Blockchain Unbound conference in San Juan. Manuel Laboy Rivera, Puerto Rico's secretary of economic development and commerce, struck a bullish tone during remarks about the tech's future prospects. The council is composed of a mix of public and private sector representatives, includingRivera, the government's chief innovation officer and its secretary of the Treasury, as well as a mix of entrepreneurs and investors that have moved to Puerto Rico. Blockchain, he said, "is accelerating economic and social changes worldwide and Puerto Rico wants to be a part of it." The creation of the council comes after a number of high-profile blockchain and cryptocurrency entrepreneurs followed investor Brock Pierce to U.S. commonwealth to set up a "crypto utopia" of sorts. According to Rivera, Puerto Rico already offers a beneficial location for new businesses, a state of affairs that is buoyed by the tax incentives outlined in several legislative acts. These include Act 22 , which provides exemptions for individual investors that are residents of the island. On top of that, Rivera said the government - through the advisory council - will be looking at ways to develop the best possible regulations and legal framework to support blockchain businesses. That said, as a U.S. commonwealth, Puerto Rico has all the protections given by federal government and must also abide by American regulatory frameworks. Puerto Rico's interest in attracting blockchain entrepreneurs and investors comes after the island was hit by Hurricane Maria, the tenth-most intense Continue reading >>
