Bitcoin Vs Gbtc Stock Price Today: Whats The Deal?

What is GBTC, the Grayscale Bitcoin Investment Trust? Its a way for everyday average people to invest in Bitcoin and/or Ethereum, without actually taking time to sign up for a Bitcoin buying service. With GBTC stocks, users are essentially playing the cryptocoin game without learning any new skills. Today the stock GBTC gained momentum in a big way. This weekend the people running the Grayscale Bitcoin Investment Trust initiated a stock split. For each one stock a user already owned, they received 91 stocks. The price split as well, allowing new users to get in on the action at a much more reasonable price per share than before said split. Much like the price of Apple stock in their most famous split, the price of GBTC flew upward on Monday morning. Interest in GBTC grew to the number one spot for keywords related to Bitcoin and Bitcoin Price in Google search, and several major-label news stories were published on the state of the market with GBTC in mind. As of December of 2017, the GBTC stock was trading at roughly 2x the value of the Bitcoin each stock represented. Each stock was meant to represent 0.919 bitcoin based on the number of Bitcoin the firm held at that time. As Benzinga suggested then, $1,534 worth of bitcoin was being traded for $2,611 per share. Thus the split was necessary. Meanwhile Ethereum inched ever closer to a market cap thats equal to that of Bitcoin. This follows with recent news about all major cryptocurrencies in related apps and services wherever Bitcoin goes, Ethereum seems to follow. Alternate coins like Ripple and Litecoin, not so much. As it is with all cryptocurrency and bitcoin-related articles on SlashGear, none of whats written here should be considered financial and/or investment advice. A Popular Bitcoin Stock Announced A 91-for-1 Split That Could Make It More Accessible To The Masses

A popular bitcoin stock announced a 91-for-1 split that could make it more accessible to the masses GBTC, a bitcoin investment trust, tries to track the price of bitcoin with its stock price. The company announced a 91-for-1 stock split, which will bring down the price of a single share dramatically, making it more accessible to retail investors. Grayscale Investments Bitcoin Investment Trust, a stock that seeks to mirror the price of bitcoin , announced Friday a 91-for-1 stock split that would drastically reduce the price of shares, making them more accessible to retail investors. GBTC gained about 15% on the news, closing at $1,970 per share Friday. At current prices, the split would make the new price for a single share of the bitcoin trust $21.64. The split wont affect GBTCs market value, which is worth $3.19 billion on the OTC market, but it will make shares more accessible to retail investors who may be more likely to buy the stock at the new lower prices than the old higher ones. GBTC was the second most popular stock on millennial trading platform Stockpile last year . The app allows users to buy fractional shares of expensive companies. Through this stock split, the company may be able to capitalize on younger investors' interest in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. A GBTC spokesperson declined to comment on the announcement. The company holds 0.0918 BTC for every share of the company , according to its website, and shares regularly move in-line with the price of bitcoin both of which are down about 13% in the past week. Shareholders will receive their 90 new shares on January 26, which will leave the company with174,410,600 shares outstanding. Shares of GBTC are up 1700% in the past year. Bitcoin is up 1659% in the same period. Continue reading >>

Why Gbtc Is Better Than Bitcoin

Why Gbtc Is Better Than Bitcoin

Grayscale Bitcoin Investment Trust has indicated that the normal premium over investing directly in Bitcoin is 42%. The current premium of GBTC over Bitcoin is even higher right now at about 85%. Although the premium is very high there are reasons that GBTC might be a logical investment for a set of investors. I've written three articles about the Grayscale Bitcoin Investment Trust ( OTCQX:GBTC ) As a result, I've been asked several times why anyone would invest in GBTC. In case you didn't know, the average premium over buying Bitcoin directly versus buying GBTC has been about 42%. And the premium right now? One share of GBTC today would cost you $703.50 The market value of 0.09258535 Bitcoin is $380.90 today Therefore, the premium is about 84-85% above the underlying Bitcoin Obviously this will fluctuate over time as Bitcoin rises and falls but also because GBTC doesn't perfectly track with the Bitcoin it holds. In fact, that appears to be the insanity. Why would anyone pay an 85% premium over Bitcoin? You can just buy Bitcoin directly by joining Coinbase ( COIN ) for example. Again, you are reading all of this correctly. You can buy Bitcoin directly if you want to own Bitcoin. There's no requirement that you have to invest in GBTC in order to enjoy the surge in Bitcoin. As I've already explained, the average premium according Grayscale is 42% but right now it's about 85% over Bitcoin. Does It Ever Make Sense to Invest in GBTC? The answer is "Yes!" it can definitely make sense. I will explain that now. First, I'll give you five quick reasons that Grayscale provides : Titled, auditable ownership through a traditional investment vehicle - The Bitcoin Investment Trust is a traditional investment vehicle with shares titled in the investors name, providing a familiar struc Continue reading >>

The gravity-defying rise of bitcoin has been drawing in new money from people who appear to know nothing about the cryptocurrency other than the fact that its price has gone up a lot in a hurry. How The Bitcoin Investment Trust Actually Works

How The Bitcoin Investment Trust Actually Works

How The Bitcoin Investment Trust Actually Works Coinbase to add ERC20 support (Seeking Alpha) The Bitcoin Investment Trust (OTC: GBTC ) is one of the most popular ways for retail traders to make bets on bitcoin . Unfortunately, many GBTC investors dont fully understand exactly what it is they are buying and the risks involved. For starters, the GBTC is a trust which buys and holds bitcoin. As of mid-Decmber , each share of the GBTC ETF represents 0.0919 bitcoin based on the total bitcoin holdings in the trust and its share structure. The GBTC trust is operated by Grayscale Investments, and Grayscales director of business development Michael Sonnenshein joined Benzingas PreMarket Prep earlier this week for its special bitcoin episode to discuss the GBTC offering. Sonnenshein said Grayscale used the SPDR Gold Trust (ETF) (NYSE: GLD ) as a model for the GBTC. The structure itself is a trust that passively and fully owns bitcoin, Sonnenshein said on the show. Theres no leverage, no trading, no cash, no other assets at all other than bitcoin. In May 2015, Grayscale gained regulatory approval to improve liquidity for its private investors by having shares of the trust trade on the U.S. OTC Market. Unlike the GLD ETF, which buys and stores physical gold, Grayscale has a unique challenge in storing and protecting its digital bitcoin holdings. For GBTC, we have leveraged a third-party custodian, a firm called Xapo, Sonnenshein said. There is super intense cryptographic physical security as well as geographic dispersion such that there security model has no single point of failure. Unfortunately, due to the fact it's currently the only bitcoin trust of its kind out there for investors, traders have driven the price of the GBTC way above the value of the bitcoin it holds. In fact Continue reading >>

At the center of everything we do is a strong commitment to independent research and sharing its profitable discoveries with investors. This dedication to giving investors a trading advantage led to the creation of our proven Zacks Rank stock-rating system. Since 1988 it has more than doubled the S&P 500 with an average gain of +25% per year. These returns cover a period from 1988-2017. Zacks Rank stock-rating system returns are computed monthly based on the beginning of the month and end of the month Zacks Rank stock prices plus any dividends received during that particular month. A simple, equally-weighted average return of all Zacks Rank stocks is calculated to determine the monthly return. The monthly returns are then compounded to arrive at the annual return. Only Zacks Rank stocks included in Zacks hypothetical portfolios at the beginning of each month are included in the return calculations. Zack Ranks stocks can, and often do, change throughout the month. Certain Zacks Rank stocks for which no month-end price was available, pricing information was not collected, or for certain other reasons have been excluded from these return calculations. Everyone Calls Bitcoin Investment Trustan Etf, But It's Not; Here's What It Is

With the Securities and Exchange Commission shooting down every Bitcoin ETF idea that crosses its desk so far, investors have turned to Bitcoin Investment Trust ( GBTC ) as a way of gaining exposure to the cryptocurrency. XAlthough many publications call GBTC an ETF, it's not it's a grantor trust. It is not registered with the SEC under the Investment Company Act of 1940 and it doesn't trade on an exchange. It trades on the over-the-counter market, which has less stringent participation rules than exchanges. And unlike most ETFs, GBTC charges a high annual fee of 2% of assets. The trust was initially launched as a 506 (c) private placement in September 2013 and is managed by Grayscale Investments, a unit of Barry Silbert's Digital Currency Group. DCG is a holding company focused on cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. It owns CoinDesk , a leading blockchain news site and has investments in more than 110 companies including the Kraken Bitcoin Exchange. Since 2013, accredited investors have had the ability to purchase restricted shares of Bitcoin Investment Trust directly from Grayscale at the daily net asset value, which is tied to the trailing 24-hour volume-weighted average price of the TradeBlock XBX Index. The NAV is approximately 0.00100733 Bitcoin per share. (The NAV quote is available on Bloomberg.) GBTC held 177,037 Bitcoins as of Jan. 29. The number of coins held by the trust fluctuates substantially as investors move money in and out of GBTC. "The trust is solely invested in Bitcoin and does not hold any other asset, nor does it trade its holdings, have leverage, lending or the like," said Michael Sonnenshein, managing director at Grayscale Investments. "In 2015, through the approval of a Form 211, working with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Continue reading >>
