Cambridge Blockchain

Our presenter in April will be Jake Yocom-Piatt (far left), team lead at Decred, a cryptocurrency based on a the btcd client of Bitcoin and a whitepaper titled Memcoin2: a hybrid proof-of-work, proof-of-stake-based cryptocurrency.Unlike other altcoins, Decred has made substantial tweaks to the original bitcoin code to right the ship, as Jake says. A core operating principle of Decred is that having any type of central point of control or influence goes against what a decentralized cryptocurrency is all about. In other words, everyone should be able contribute to the future direction of the project and no core entity or group should have undue influence.Jake will be talking about how a hybrid consensus system gives voice to the coin holders of the system. He will also talk about how Decred is planning to turn its development funds into a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) thus handing over a current value of $28 million in funds to the stakeholders themselves. This technical presentation will include an abridged summary of bitcoin, a deep dive into hybrid PoW/PoS, gamification of timestamping, open governance and what it takes to create a stakeholder-driven DAO.BACKGROUND READINGDecred Sets Its Sights on Decentralization in 2018Whitepaper- Networking and settling in7:30-8:30PM - Presentation followed by Q&A9:00-11:00PM - Late night discussions at a local bar (TBA)(Note: We are starting 30 minutes later than usual. Blockchain & Cryptocurrency In Boston Tech - Part 2 | Venturefizz

Richard Dulude, Co-Founder and Principal at Underscore VC Just last month, Underscore VC led a $1.5M seed investment into Commonwealth Crypto , a startup developing Bitcoin infrastructure. The investment was just one of many blockchain/cryptocurrency companies Underscore VC Co-Founder and Principal Richard Dulude have shown interest in. Dulude helped lead the way for Underscore VCs investments in Polychain Capital , Ripple , SmartContract.com , and others. Its fundamentally a real way of designing value flows without a centralized medium, Dulude said. Bitcoin ignites the brain with how it works. Not only is it an alternative to money, but its fascinating with what other applications can be used. Underscore VC invests in early-stage startups with a clear vision. When I spoke with Dulude, he mentioned how he is motivated by the technology behind a company, as well as how their infrastructure is working. Commonwealth Crypto appeared to check off these boxes. Being an investor who understands this space, I heard about Commonwealth, said Dulude. Weve been looking for something different, and the entrepreneurs behind the company [ Sharon Goldberg and Ethan Heilman ] had unique qualifications, and are respected thought leaders in this sector. Richard moderated a panel discussion with prominent figures in the blockchain/cryptocurrency space. From left to right: Dulude,Anders Brownworth of Circle, Jeremy Kauffman of LBRY, David Vorick of Sia,Ethan Heilman of Commonwealth Crypto. It feels like a whole new Internet like its 94 all over again, said Pillar Founder Jamie Goldstein . The anchor companies in this space are being built and thats what makes it exciting. Boston Fintech Meetup

Straight to the punchline-if youre interested in fintech, you need to go to the monthly Boston Fintech Meetups , taking place the first Tuesday of each month. Boston is the third largest city for asset management behind NY and London. Heavyweights like State Street Global Advisors, Fidelity, BNY Mellon Investment Management (yes, its headquartered in Boston,) 3 of the largest 5 asset managers in the world. And I didnt even mention Wellington, MFS, Columbiaall solidly in the top 50. So its not surprising that Boston has been the home to multiple fintech companiesits just that the names, outside of State Street Bank, may not be familiar: Charles River Development , Progress Software (IPOd) Eze Castle , (acquired by TPG), Long View (acquired by Linedata), my old company eSecLending (acquired by TA Associates), and so on. How come you dont know these names? Because they are all financial plumbing companies, to one extent or another. And theres another crop of VC-backed startups behind them, with names like Kensho Finance and Quantopian . Those last two are less plumbing, more predictive engine, but still firmly in fintech. And increasingly, startup fintech professionals are making this a monthly event. While its only a year old, the Meetup now boasts 677 members , with 100+ members showing up at each of the last 4 meetings, which have varied from Bitcoin debate to DemoNight . Who goes to these meetings? Mostly entrepreneurs. One, George Popescu, bootstrapped his company Boston Technologies onto the Inc. 500 and recently sold it to Forexware. Also investorsfrom Fidelity, State Street Advisors, GMO, Wellington, BNY Mellon, as well as angel investors and VCs from Flybridge, Spark Capital, Devonshire Investors, and technologists from IBM, Brown Brothers Harriman, bankers and a Continue reading >>
