Why Is Everybody Using Different Wallets When There's Blockchain? : Bitcoinmarkets

Ok, I know about paper/physical wallets, and then offline wallets, so there's certainly some clickbait in that title but... My understanding is that Blockchain is essentially the network, in the simplest terms, in which bitcoin exists, ie. it is the bitcoin itself with its many complexities. So when there's a native wallet function of Blockchain, why would anybody use a different online wallet? Are there any legitimate reasons for me to move my coins to a different wallet than my Blockchain wallet, given I'm staying online. edit: thanks a lot everybody for a very informative discussion here. i was indeed confusing the blockchain and Blockhain.info, my bad. turns out Blockhain.info is just another wallet. on another note, i've been holding coins for about 4 years now, and I'm not a coder beyond a basic understanding and functionality, but I feel like I learned a great deal in the past few years about the technologies and also the bitcoin market structures, just by getting involved in the market. I trade in fiat; I will now be including bitcoin in my investment portfolios, and the one reason I'm very bullish is that btc has proven to have built and firmly established ways of communication that's peculiar to itself by disseminating information in complete transparency, open-source argumentation, and overall unobstructed access to tools. it's really easy (and possibly profitable from speculation) to call bitcoin volatile simply because it might be difficult to grasp the distinction between what's paper and what's money with the current structure of fiat in the world. But in the long run, there's nothing less volatile than a market that organically eliminates asymmetric information regardless whether it's growing, shrinking, or maintaining level. 10 Answers - Are My Bitcoins Safe In My Blockchain.info Wallet? Or Can Blockchain.info Be Hacked Like Mt. Gox? - Quora

Are my bitcoins safe in my blockchain.info wallet? Or can blockchain.info be hacked like Mt. Gox? Bitcoin Block Explorer - Blockchain.info is secure, maybe too secure. A greater risk than theft may be losing access to your own wallet by forgetting your password. If you lose your password and recovery mnemonics, it's over. They ( Bitcoin Block Explorer - Blockchain.info ) can't recover it. Nobody can. They have numerous wallet backup options because I'm sure a sick amount of Bitcoins have been lost by people who forget their password and don't realize that it can't be recovered. Anyway, their wallet is done very securely. Bitcoin Block Explorer - Blockchain.info servers never know your private keys since your web browser encrypts/decrypts your key(s) on-demand using your password(s). It can be a bit confusing for laymen users since they may not understand how in the world the Blockchain wallets work. I would have never thought I'd recommend a hosted wallet, where someone else stores your Bitcoins for you, but Coinbase is both secure and has the financial backing to be reasonable safe. Definitely do not trust your Bitcoins to any rinky-dink company, several have gone out of business and taken customer funds, and that trend is likely to continue for a few more years. EDIT: Although I ended up recommending Coinbase, I have found that Bitcoin Block Explorer - Blockchain may have wallet bugs! I lost 0.5 BTC, hard to prove, but it happened, due to an error in their systems. Basically a Transfer from one wallet to a new address in the same wallet never showed back up. It was described by a guy on reddit as having the same problem. EDIT 2: Coinbase, it turns out, is no gem. They have a bizarre terms of service that tells you what you can spend your Bitcoin on, and it excludes a Continue reading >>

Mycelium Bitcoin Wallet Review

Mycelium Bitcoin Wallet Review

MyCelium was formed by a group of hardware engineers in 2008. The team was motivated to work with blockchain by the emergence and popularity of Bitcoin over the following years. MyCelium offers the MyCelium Bitcoin wallet , which provides an accessible option for smartphone users. The app looks to make Bitcoin use frictionless, functional, and help bridge the gap to fiat currency while remaining secure. In this MyCelium Bitcoin wallet review you will find out about the features offered and whether it suits your requirements. Sometimes, it is hard to decide if a crypto platform is a trustworthy dependable product. Your personal experiences may differ from what you read online or whether software feels ideal, so lets take a look at some public opinion. Public opinion shines very favorably on the MyCelium wallet. The app is downloadable from the Google Play Store and retains a strong 4.5-star rating. There are thousands of happy users shouting praises. You will always find a few poor reviews but most of these are down to personal issues rather than the wallet experience as a whole. Its quite hard to find too many discouraging haters of the smartphone wallet. I was expecting to read many security complaints or backups going awry. However, the Bitcoin world generally loves MyCelium. Even Reddit, which is a shoe in for criticism, gives glowing reports. The reviews speak for themselves. The wallets popularity stems from the expertly designed app. The MyCelium wallet is available on both Google Play and iTunes, which should suit about 99% of smartphone users. If youre still stuck using a Windows phone, then you have bigger problems, my friend. Upon opening the app, you are immediately greeted with your Bitcoin wallet and simple easy-to-understand tabs. Youve got a QR code, sen Continue reading >>

An In-depth Overview Of Different Mobile Wallets : Bitcoin

An In-depth Overview Of Different Mobile Wallets : Bitcoin

Samourai focusses heavily on anonymity and obfuscation. Addresses are never used more than once. When making a transaction there is an obfuscation slider. Samourai has had SegWit enabled since October. Furthermore it offers a plethora of different features, too much to sum up here. If you are an advanced crypto-user you should definitely check out this wallet and their website which explains all of the different features. The UI takes a bit of getting used to though. Breadwallet is a very simple to use, straightforward app. The UI is slick and intuitive and in-app support to basic questions is very well incorporated. This could be a good wallet for a new person to the scene. The lack of advanced features will make this app not the go-to for more experienced users. It does however feature fingerprint authentication, which is cool, as well as BCH extraction. The lack of SegWit and complete absence of custom fee's is a problem though, especially since fees have gone up during the recent BTC spike. With only 2 fee options to choose from I simply can not recommend this wallet to people who are looking to make frequent transactions. When I first started with Greenaddress I didn't like the UI, I found it a bit clumsy. So definitely not user-friendly for a beginner. On the plus side it allows a choice of 2FA settings. Furthermore it has SegWit enabled and it has some advanced features like nLockTime transactions and it offers a service for instant transactions. This all feels very Lightning Network-y, which makes sense as GreenAddress is a part of Blockstream. Our friends in the other sub will most likely have something to say about this. I'll refrain from this and just say the following: this is an advanced wallet with promising features. If they clean up their UI a bit I cou Continue reading >>

Blockchain.info Responds To Address Generation Issue Posted Via Pastebin : Bitcoin

Recently we were contacted by a researcher regarding a potential address generation issue that resulted in private keys being discoverable as well as the funds associated with those addresses. Through his research he identified 128 addresses that were potentially vulnerable including one that he linked to a Blockchain wallet. Security and the safety of user funds is a top priority at Blockchain. We have a variety of internal mechanisms in place to prevent against malicious attacks and work diligently to educate our users on security best practices. We also investigate all security reports that we receive. For this particular issue, heres what we discovered: After an extensive code review across all of our platforms by our lead engineers and security engineering staff, we did not find any patterns in the logic that would cause the same address generation issue this researcher discovered. Our QA and security team also tried to reproduce the issue and were unable to generate any similar addresses or reproduce this issue. We then analyzed the transactions characteristics of the 128 impacted addresses reported to us and were able to definitively rule out 94 addresses as not associated with a Blockchain Wallet. Of the remaining 34 addresses, while we could not rule them out immediately because of our data and privacy constraints, we have strong data to believe they are not connected to a Blockchain Wallet. It is highly unlikely that they were generated by our software. We scanned the entire block chain during the companys duration (2011 to present) for similarly generated addresses and discovered six additional addresses, previously undiscovered by the researcher, that were generated in the same manner. We were also able to rule these addresses out as associated with a Block Continue reading >>
