Bitcoin And Blockchain And Basic Income, Oh My!

In the last 15 years, many industries were turned upside-down by the rise of peer-to-peer technologies for sharing information. Napster changed the face of the music industry. Search engines allowed everyone to find information in an instant. Social media networks allowed us to form virtual tribes and start huge movements. All of these were disruptive technologies: they offered a new paradigm for producing and sharing information. Unlike the broadcast era, suddenly anyone could produce, share, and spread information. We are experiencing another shift right now, and its one that involves currency: enter Bitcoin. This open-source system for exchanging value is not only getting recognition among geeks. Business big and small are beginning to accept it as a legitimate payment source. There is a growing number of startups being built around it. And even though there are those that continue to discredit it and discourage people from acquiring it, they cant stop it. Bitcoin may be the Myspace of crypto-currency, and there may be a better technology that comes along later, but its changing the way we think about money. Bitcoin is an entirely new paradigm a decentralized global currency not controlled by any governing body. In this episode, we talk about the advantages and downsides to Bitcoin, and what role this kind of system will play in the future society. We discuss decentralization and how this crypto-currencycan be a platform for other exponential technologies. We also explore the possibility of a near-zero cost economy, equal access to basic needs and guaranteed income, and creative self-expression being the key value that human beings will possess in this kind of world. In this episode of The Future Thinkers Podcast: Decentralization and its effect on the future The te Continue reading >>

Episode 816: Bitcoin Losers

Episode 816: Bitcoin Losers

Plenty of people will tell you they're getting rich off of bitcoin. They could be right. But there's another group of bitcoin owners that aren't so ecstatic. Because they might be rich, too, but they lost the passkey that would let them get at their digital fortune. Syl Turner is in that second, less glamorous group. When he got around one-and-a-half bitcoins seven or eight years ago, they were nearly worthless. So worthless he bunked the hard drive that held the key somewhere and now he can't remember where. Today on the show, we join Syl on a digital treasure hunt, as he ventures into his attic looking for what could be the key to his bitcoin wallet, and tens of thousands of dollars. It's all or nothing. In the decentralized anti-governmental world of bitcoin, you can't file a claim for damaged or lost currency. You've either got the key, or you don't. Then Kimberly Grauer and Jonathan Levin of Chainalysis help us figure out how much bitcoin has been lost and why it's so difficult to track down, and try to figure out if there's any way to find Syl's vanished riches. Subscribe to our show on Apple Podcasts , PocketCasts and NPR One . Continue reading >>

The Bitcoin Podcast Interview With Tom Anderson - Ceo Of The World's Fastest Blockchain

The Bitcoin Podcast Interview with Tom Anderson - CEO of The World's Fastest Blockchain The Bitcoin Podcast Interview with Tom Anderson - CEO of The World's Fastest Blockchain Devvio, the fastest and most scalable blockchain in the world Tom Anderson, CEO and Founder of the fastest blockchain in the world Devvio, features as a guest on The Bitcoin Podcast , hosted by Demetrick Ferguson. Delving deep into the core of Devvios foundations, Tom discusses his introduction into the world of blockchain as well as his background in the tech space, more specifically the robotics industry. As an experienced entrepreneur, Tom founded his robotics company, Novint Technologies a technology development and licensing company in the field of haptics. It develops, markets, and sells 3D haptics products and equipment, applications, and technologies that allow people to use their sense of touch to interact with computers. During his time at Novint he took the company public and raised over $34 million. One of the key milestones Tom achieved was taking the product costing tens of thousands of dollars down to a consumer price point, to enter a yet to be penetrated market at consumer level which led to millions of dollars in licensing within the games industry. The success of the company eventually led to Facebook acquiring Novint. Blockchain technology has grown over the past decade by providing trustless and highly robust solutions for maintaining distributed ledgers. However, in spite of the many different blockchain approaches that currently exist, there are a number of challenges that have not been solved in a single solution. Various approaches provide parts of the solution, but a single protocol that addresses all of these major challenges is still needed. The Devv Protocol was desig Continue reading >>

Bitcoin: What Are Some Good Bitcoin Podcasts?

Bitcoin: What Are Some Good Bitcoin Podcasts?

The best place to start is with Hash Power , a three-part podcast by Patrick OShaughnessy. He presents a very clear overview of three of the most discussed aspects of cryptocurrency featuring some of the brightest minds in the space: The future of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies Laura Shin, Senior Editor at Forbes, does a bi-weekly podcast called Unchained which also features fantastic guests and interesting content. In terms of a blockchain podcast on a regular schedule, this is my go to recommendation. Check out Lauras articles on Forbes while youre at it. She distills complicated ideas and jargon into stories anyone can understand. I love how she approaches cryptocurrency from a non-technical perspective and asks the questions that normal people have. An episode everyone new to cryptocurrency should listen to is Tim Ferris episode featuring Naval Ravikant (co-founder of AngelList and CoinList) and Nick Szabo (creator of BitGold) . Its long, clocking in at over 2 1/2 hours, however the ideas discussed are presented clearly by both Naval and Nick. Theres a lot of jargon thrown around in the world of blockchain, and this episode can help provide a strong foundation for understanding what people mean when they throw around common technical terms. Naval is one of the clearest thinkers in the space, and this episode demonstrates why anything produced with Naval is an auto-listen for me. The a16z podcast sometimes features bitcoin. Anything they publish is worth a listen. Their interviews are fantastic, and generally feature an a16z General Partner knowledgable about the space such as Chris Dixon. Theyve interviewed Fred Ehrsam (Co-Founder of Coinbase), Olaf Carlson-Wee (Co-Founder of the leading hedge fund in the space), and others. Finally, I have a cryptocurrency pod Continue reading >>

There is a wealth of info here, but be warned: it does hit the technical side of things. Another bitcoin podcast that has become a network of related media. Lets Talk Bitcoin has created its own publishing platform and even its own crypto coin At the time of writing the show is on an impressive 341 episodes and counting. This article provides an overview of Preston and Stigs discussion of the book, The Age of Cryptocurrency , and whether or not you can capitalize on the new phenomenon. If you want to read our executive summary of, The Age of CryptoCurrency , view this page instead . If you would like to download all of our book summaries, click here. This article and podcast answers the following questions: Ask The Investors: Can the average investor compete with investors with insider knowledge? Unlike your normal fiat currency, Cryptocurrency is digital money thats designed to put a bank in your pocket. Heres how it works. Assume 4 people all wanted to create their own currency. Instead of printing dollars and making expensive coins, they simply have a sheet of paper. On each persons version of the paper, called the ledger, they would keep track of how much currency is exchanged between each other. As a simple example, lets assume that each of the four people start out with 25 units of money and that their were only 100 units of money in total. Well call those the digital coins. Now, if person 1 wants to do some work for person 2, and they agree that the work performed was worthy of 5 coins, then you would see person 2 pay person 1 the digital money. The transaction would show-up on all four ledgers. As a result, person 1 would have 30 coins; person 2 now has 20 coins, and persons 3 and 4 both have their original 25 coins. This is how cryptocurrencies work. Instead of trading real coins or dollars, its simply a method of keeping track of the accounting. By doing this with intense encryption, the need for a formal banking system goes away. Instead, you can have millions of people around the world running this software, and keeping track of all the transactions on a distributed network Continue reading >>
