Future(s) Studies (colloquially called "future(s)" by many of the field's practitioners) is an interdisciplinary field that seeks to hypothesize the possible, probable, preferable, or alternative future(s). One of the fundamental assumptions in future(s) studies is that the future is plural rather than singular, that is, that it consists of alternative future(s) of varying degrees of likelihood but that it is impossible in principle to say with certainty which one will occur. Lets Talk About Bitcoins Insane Energy Consumption - Futurology

Lets Talk About Bitcoins Insane Energy Consumption - Futurology

Lets Talk About Bitcoins Insane Energy Consumption When the dust has settled, we shall see, but Id be surprised if bitcoin doesnt crash before it settles on a long-term value. Agreed, and it is not well situated to solve any realistic problem at this point. Some crypto alternatives are (though close to 98% will turn out to be worthless in the long run), yet will be dragged down for now as well. More than 150 individual countries in the world consume less energy annually. And that power-hungry network is currently increasing its energy use every day by about 450 gigawatt-hours, roughly the same amount of electricity the entire country of Haiti uses in a year, It just boggles my mind how badly scalable Bitcoin is in that light. It is one of many problems that basically gives the token very little actual value. Not much has changed since 2013 if you look at it. These are valid points, but these are really temporary problems. Bitcoin and bitcoin mining can be made more efficient while still offering additional security and decentralization over alternatives. I see it as shaky foundation for other cryptocurrencies to build on. The market cap has to grow a lot before it will be stable enough to launch a revolution, but that could happen soon. People are not just giving away all that bitcoin mining power, it is driven by powerful economic forces. It just boggles my mind how badly scalable Bitcoin is ... What people seem to forget (though I don't know why) is that this is by design. The 'proof of work' system was and is intended to rate limit 'mining' by increasing (or decreasing) the computational difficulty of the process in response to the amount of computational resources thrown at the network. Increasing the computational load per mined block is the very definition of dec Continue reading >>

The Electricity Used To Mine Bitcoin This Year Is Bigger Than The Annual Usage Of 159 Countries : Worldnews

The Electricity Used To Mine Bitcoin This Year Is Bigger Than The Annual Usage Of 159 Countries : Worldnews

If the price of bitcoin continues to rise, then more miners will join in, making the difficulty go up, and making the amount of bitcoins each miner gets smaller. Competition drives profitability down to 0, but as the price keeps rising, more and more people have to join in to equalize the cost of opportunity. Every 4 years the amount of bitcoins being emitted per block is halved, and eventually miners will only get paid transaction fees for mining. Depending on how much those fees are worth will be how much energy is worth spending on mining the block. I used to trade bitcoin when it was $5 and did a lot of transactions with it. It's not really practical for anything but silk road type transactions. It takes like an hour for the transaction to go through, it can have a huge fee attached to the transaction, and actually holding onto large amounts of bitcoin safely is very hard to do. I think bitcoin is purely used for speculation right now. I don't even feel bad for not holding onto all the bitcoin I bought because the currency never made a ton of sense. I mean I understand how it works but what makes bitcoin any more valuable than any of the other cryptocurrencies? If anything it's less functional is a currency than many of them. Soon we'll have a more usable cryptocurrency that isn't all about speculation. So there is still a lot of money to be made with future cryptocurrencies if one can figure out which currency will be adopted after bitcoin. I can explain this. In the original paper by "Satoshi Nakamoto" you'll find the HashCash algorithm. So you come up with a candidate block in your miner with your special wallet address, all the latest transactions and the "hash" of the previous block then you add a number to it, (they call this a nonce), and run it through sha2 Continue reading >>

Power Consumption Might Be The Death Of Btc : Bitcoin

Power Consumption Might Be The Death Of Btc : Bitcoin

With all the exuberance over the continual stream of ATH never-ending meme-fest that goes along with it, it seems that the citizens of /r/bitcoin only focus on good news. There is a pretty dark shadow hanging over the future of BTC, and any other proof-of-work crypto, and that is power consumption. Any time this topic comes up, there are maybe 10 semi-serious replies and the topic rarely gets above double-figure upvotes... seems like nobody wants to have their happy place invaded by reality. So... some facts... today, the energy expenditure per block is 275kWh (Source: ) which is apparently the daily energy consumption of 9.3 US households... which in itself is a pretty high level of consumption. This is for one block. So the 0.05 BTC I sent my brother a couple of days ago cost (using my local energy costs) anything up to 38.50, which is (a) much more than the current TX fee, and much much more than the cost of the energy in whatever country the block was actually mined. The energy consumption, and more importantly, the CO2 output is, however, the same, being ~ 0.205 metric tonnes. (Source: ) Yes, there is a renewable component to this energy consumption, but by and large, mining concentrates in areas of low energy cost, and that generally equates with fossil-fuel burning. This may change in the future, but it will be slow... possibly too slow. Based on current transaction rate increase, current difficulty increase and current world energy production, there is an intersection point somewhere in the future where the energy demands of BTC transaction verification exceeds available energy resources. Add to this the fact that mining is a wholly consumptive process. It produces nothing except heat. Yes, it produces valid blocks, but only one block is valid... all other comp Continue reading >>
