Why isnt bitcoin the go-to solution for money transfers? Though many people still use banks for international money transfers, online transfer services are gaining popularity for their simplicity. The process involves a few more steps than using a traditional money transfer platform. Whats more, you have to complete them yourself nobody takes care of the entire process for you. BitPay has relationships with many bitcoin exchanges around the world, but we only utilize exchanges which meet our operational and regulatory requirements. When calculating our exchange rates for BitPay invoices, we only incorporate rates of bitcoin exchanges which meet our regulatory, operational, and market depth requirements. To calculate the exchange rate for US Dollars, we typically pull the market depth from an exchange with adequate liquidity and reliable withdrawal capabilities in the USA and Eurozone. We factor "slippage" into our exchange rates, which means that the larger the value of the invoice, the lower the exchange rate. Slippage is usually only noticeable on very large invoices. We set exchange rates for non-USD currencies indirectly using the Open Exchange Rates API . In the future, as Bitcoin markets in non-USD currencies mature, BitPay will use those markets directly. The BitPay exchange rate is available via JSON API. Continue reading >>

Bitcoin is a decentralized virtual currency. This currency is exchanged digitally and managed by a peer-to-peer network, rather than a central bank or authority. The supply of Bitcoins is automated and released to mining servers; with a limit of 21 million Bitcoins being reached by 2140. Each Bitcoin is a piece of code that has its own transaction log with timestamps. The coins are stored in an owner's virtual wallet and can be transferred and exchanged for goods and services. Transactions are public and although they are relatively anonymous, it is possible trace identities back to real-life individuals. There is debate as to whether or not Bitcoin should be considered a currency, a commodity, or a hybrid of both. Bitcoins are associated with a high level of risk, as they are volatile, not time-tested, and currently under no regulation or legislation. There have been incidents of online Bitcoin wallets being compromised by hackers leading to theft of Bitcoins. Bitcoin is not recognized by the ISO and therefore does not have an official ISO 4217 code. A currency code is generally built from the two-digit ISO 3316 country code and a third letter for the currency. Although "BTC" is often used in the Bitcoin community, BT is the country code of Bhutan. An X-code reflects currencies that are used internationally and so, XE has chosen to use XBT to represent Bitcoin. Introduced in 2009, Bitcoin was created by a developer or group of developers going by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. Initially the value of the currency was set by users on forums until the first exchange outlet was established. It is known as a "crypto-currency"; meaning that the money and transactions are secured and controlled through encrypted passwords. Since its introduction, Bitcoins have been gaining Continue reading >>

Bitcoin currency exchanges work in a manner similar to banks. One first deposits amounts of money in the currencies supported by the exchange, to his own account in the exchange, uses these balances to trade with other users of the exchange and then withdraws that money. Unlike over-the-counter transactions, there is no risk of losing money due to people not fulfilling their part of the deal, as long as the exchange itself does not commit fraud or withhold money. Exchanging is done by placing "buy" or "sell" orders, which the exchange system software then matches with each other. "Buy" orders (or "bids") are offers to buy bitcoins in exchange for another currency at a maximum price-per-bitcoin which is set by the offerer. "Sell" orders (or "asks") are offers to sell bitcoins at a minimum price-per-bitcoin. If the bid price of a buy order is higher than the ask price of a sell order, an exchange can be performed and either the bid order, the sell order or both can be removed from the "order book". Thus, at any given time, there is a price above which there are no more buy orders and a slightly higher price below which there are no more sell orders. Communication with the Bitcoin currency exchanges is commonly done using a standard web browser, over a secure SSL connection. Exchanging bitcoins for other forms of currency brings up some issues regarding chargeback fraud. Specifically, payment methods such as credit cards, and PayPal, can be reversed up to 90 days after the transaction took place. In contrast, bitcoin is a "hard currency", once you spend bitcoins, you cannot get them back by 'pulling' from your side. Thus, when you trade bitcoin for a 'soft' currency like paypal or credit card, you open yourself up to the risk of chargeback after you send bitcoin. The buye Continue reading >>

The Bitcoin currency or the virtual money is still holding its head up in spite of the negativity it has been receiving in the news lately. First, there is the news about the bankruptcy and hacking of the first Bitcoin bank, Flexcoin, and the suicide of the business executive in Singapore. The question now is how strong is the Bitcoin? As of now, the Bitcoin exchange rate is still high at 647 dollars for every Bitcoin. There were predictions that the value of Bitcoin will drop drastically brought about by the many negative news about Bitcoin, but apparently, the value is still high. Bitcoin users do still have faith in the system. They believe that each Bitcoin is safely protected by a cryptographic code that is very difficult to tamper with. It was in the news lately how the Bitcoins placed in the hot wallet were lost from theft because a hacker successfully transferred funds. Those Bitcoins that were placed in the cold storage were not touched because the cold storage remained off line. Despite the hacking incident, Bitcoin exchange rate is still at its highest and the users are still showing that their faith in the system has not faltered. The use of the digital currency or Bitcoin is becoming very appealing to more and more people. This is because of the convenience of wiring funds from one person to the other. There is also the convenience of not having to divulge too much information about themselves. In a regular bank, a person will be asked to fill up a form and expose sensitive information such as his monthly income, and so on and so forth. At Bitcoin, all it takes is to download the software or the app and the user can now start to acquire Bitcoins in many different ways. The most appealing feature of the Bitcoin software is that the user can do financial tra Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Is An Asset, Not A Currency

Bitcoin Is An Asset, Not A Currency

I use economic insight to analyze issues and critique policy. Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own. A currency, Bitcoin is not, nor shall it be. This illustration shows a Bitcoin sign in Hong Kong.(Photo credit: ANTHONY WALLACE/AFP/Getty Images) Over the past year and a half Bitcoin has been on a spectacular run, rising in value 140% in 2016 and now an additional 49% in just the past month. This surge in value has invigorated Bitcoin backers convinced this boost in value makes Bitcoin a more credible currency, that it is a sign of the cryptocurrencys strength. Yet the wild swings, both up and down, in the value of Bitcoin do not make it a more plausible substitute currency; they make it a speculative asset, a get-rich-quick scheme. Is Bitcoin the currency of the future? No. There are two big problems with bitcoin as a currency: its value is unstable and its transaction processing is too slow. The most important feature of a currency is that it be a stable store of value. This credo, ably explained by Steve Forbes here (among many places), is vital for a developing country economy to attract the investment it needs. Even in developed countries, as John Tamny explained here on Forbes.com, a stable currency value is the key to investment because those who invest are expecting a stream of future earnings to earn back their investment plus some profit. Instability in currency values mean that an investor cannot accurately predict the value of those future earnings. This uncertainty makes investments less valuable; thus, less investment happens. Over the past month the value of a Bitcoin has experienced an average daily change of 2% in value, sometimes down but mostly up. For comparison, over the same month, the exchange rate between the euro and the U.S. Continue reading >>
