The Bitcoin Subreddit During The Cryptocrash Is A Lot Of Fun

Thank you for signing up! An error occurred. Please try again. The Bitcoin Subreddit During the Cryptocrash Is a Lot of Fun This is not a new or particularly original observation, but bitcoin true believers are weird. Because bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are, for some, tied into deeper beliefs about a less-regulated, more free-flowing world, even during the last 30 days, in which bitcoin has lost around 70 percent of its value, there is an ideological fervor in the concept of hodling. Which makes the r/bitcoin subreddit a particularly fun place to be over the last few days. Its like getting a front-row seat to Dutch tulip mania, except if some people who had bought tulip contracts also really believed that one day tulips could and should replace the fire department, the public-school system, and democracy itself. Theres this priceless exchange, first spotted by Wired writer Erin Griffith: If you want a real Venn diagram of people who strongly believe in bitcoin and post often to Reddit, you have this : Theres this moment, in response to a Paul Krugman tweet in which he admits to cryptofreude, or enjoying watching the bitcoin bubble pop: And then there are times when its tough to tell who is being serious and who is being incredibly stupid: For those who dont want to dig through self-delusion and desperation, theres also the subreddit r/buttcoin , which collects the best moments of Schadenfreude as cryptocurrencies continue to crash. Of course, while I was writing this, bitcoin regained about $1,500 of value and is currently trading at around $7,800, so maybe a bull run on bitcoin is about to start. Buy now while its still low! Sell everything you own, if you have to. You can always buy it all back in bitcoin. Continue reading >>

Reddit: The Front Page Of The Internet

People ask all the time: Is Bitcoin in a bubble? Nobody knows what will happen to the price, but here is my prediction. It's possible and even likely there are multiple projects and events waiting to push the price way beyond $10K before the spring of 2018. Certain models and 'experts' predict that the bubble will only pop in the $30-40K range, correcting back all the way to $10K, I think that's realistic. Once the B2X fork cleared out, the winning chain (I predict Bitcoin Core) will skyrocket, because there are a bunch of people currently sitting on the sidelines waiting out what will happen. Also, lots of people will sell the minority chain buying the majority chain putting extra buy pressure on the majority chain. Right after the B2X fork we will have multiple events pushing the price up: Rootstock going on main net, Core announcing upgrade hard fork plans that may include a scripting language upgrade and a sane and long-term blocksize increase strategy, ETFs, and major retailer support (Amazon?) followed by media hype. I think the upsides for Bitcoin are much bigger than the risks at this point. We're still in a bull market and will remain so for a few months. However, there will be issues starting April 2018. I can see major hack succeed (like Bitfinex), major government crackdown/regulation plan announced by a large country like the USA, alt-coin pump, and another hostile Bitcoin fork attempt. Two of such events at the same time will trigger a bear market lasting for years. Bitcoin will consolidate at $10K, or even lower. Then around 2020, things start to get resolved. The lightning network starts serving tens of millions of people daily. Halving reduces miner rewards, but the fees are already more than covering the loss. There will be multiple new mining chip co Continue reading >>

Crypto Chatter On Reddit Is Up 930% This Year. So... Is This The Top?

Crypto chatter on Reddit is up 930% this year. So... is THIS the top? The biggest bitcoin group on Reddit is adding 1,300 new subscribers a day. Thats not even the most impressive stat 24 days ago = 300,000 subscribers. Today = 329,700 subscribers. So boasted a post this week on the largest Reddit forum about bitcoin, touting the groups substantial growth recently. As the price of bitcoin BTCUSD, -2.33% and other cryptocurrencies has skyrocketed this year, there has been an explosion of crypto-related activity on Reddit. On average, interactions on the major crypto subreddits are up 930% this year, according to a MarketWatch analysis of data from CrowdTangle. On the largest bitcoin forum, subscribers are up 66% in 2017 to more than 331,000, and the total number of interactions in August (defined as comments and upvotes) was up 315% from January. That closely parallels the rise in the price of bitcoin, which is up about 285% year-to-date. Related: Bitcoin rises, so people Google bitcoin, so then bitcoin rises, so then people Google... August was particularly dramatic for the forum perhaps no surprise given the drama-filled news coming out of the crypto world over the past two months. The main bitcoin forums moderators confirmed that theyve seen an average rate of 1,300 new users per day recently, and that they logged a big bump in page views in August up 59% from the previous month (compared with a 16% monthly increase from June to July). According to the groups moderators, the day of the month with the highest traffic was Aug. 1, the day of BIP148 activation. It was also the day of the launch of Bitcoin Cash, which marked a split in the cryptocurrency. That day saw more than 1.5 million views, more than twice the groups average, and the most views since the collapse of Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Has Problems. It Is A Bubble. And It Will Pop. Just Not Yet. : Bitcoin

First off, I am not a professional at this, so take this as you will, and educate me/others if possible. Obviously what myself and everyone else here says is just there opinion. No matter how backed by trends it is. Discussions are encouraged, but let's keep it civil and logical. Don't simply tear someone apart based on their wording. Look at the idea they shared and actually debate/discuss it like a rationale person. Cryptocoins as a whole have value as a technology. Some even as a currency. But btc is not that coin. The fees are outright ridiculous, transaction times pathetic, and there are other more private options (for those who care about that). So I fully believe btc will die. No doubt about it. But as it stands right now, in order to buy many of the other coins out there you have to buy bitcoin first. Which means the bubble can not pop until there are other options. The day we start seeing more options for fiat -> crypto transactions, is the day to start preparing to move out. Once people aren't forced to buy btc first, this will also have a huge impact on the volatility of currencies in general. Dips or rises in one won't have as massive effects in others (just look at the last couple days). This reliance on btc for other markets is basically the only thing keeping it afloat. Take yesterday for example. I wanted to buy ARK as it dipped, but the transfer of btc from Coinsquare to Bittrex took 16 fucking hours, and cost me nearly $60 at the time (at least that's only like $40 now right?!). By the time I even had the oportunity to trade for ARK, both markets had dropped enough I don't believe it to be worth my while. I love bitcoin for what it has done, but unless it undergoes some massive changes, it is only a matter of time until one doesn't have to rely on it. Continue reading >>

This Is Not A Bubble. This Was Not A Crash. This Is Just The Beginning. : Cryptocurrency

Mainstream financial media's attempt to compare the January 2018 cryptocurrency correction to the 1999/2000 dot-com burst shows their naivety when it comes to Bitcoin and the entire crypto market. Cryptocurrency has only just begun to enter mainstream awareness never mind adoption. By the year 2000 when the dot-com burst was in full effect, over 43% of the United States population was using the Internet. In contrast, after roughly eight years Bitcoin is at best in its early adopters phase. It is estimated that only .046% of the target population of crypto users has adopted this technology. We are not at the peak of this cycle as mainstream media would like to suggest, rather we are just starting up the bitcoin adoption lifecycle. The Internet was a collaboration of universities and government institutions. These institutions were well funded. Once the potential of the Internet began to be understood mass amount of investment from government, education, and private institutions followed. In stark contrast, there has been little to no investment by any of these entities in cryptocurrency. In great part Bitcoin and cryptocurrency has been supported by small individual investors who support the technology and/or want to make money. The day will come when mainstream investors and possibly even governments will make a big move into cryptocurrency. When this happens the market will explode higher. Almost every government around the world has put roadblocks in front of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency development. This too is in stark contrast to the Internet where almost every government assisted their people and businesses gain Internet access. Bitcoin has had threats made against its existence since day one and countless times thereafter. The Internet never faced such a constant Continue reading >>
