A Beginner's Guide To Cryptocoin Mining

A Beginner's Guide To Cryptocoin Mining

Is it worth your time to mine for cryptocoins? Cryptocurrency mining takes patience and time. Koron/Moment/Getty Images Mining cryptocoins  is an arms race that rewards early adopters. You might have heard of Bitcoin , the first decentralized cryptocurrency that was released in early 2009. Similar digital currencies have crept into the worldwide market since then, including a spin-off from Bitcoin called Bitcoin Cash . You can get in on the cryptocurrency rush if you take the time to learn the basics properly. If you had started mining Bitcoins back in 2009, you could have earned thousands of dollars by now. At the same time, there are plenty of  ways you could have lost money , too.  Bitcoins  are not a good choice for beginning miners who work on a small scale. The current up-front investment and maintenance costs, not to mention the sheer mathematical difficulty of the process, just doesn't make it profitable for consumer-level hardware. Now, Bitcoin mining is reserved for large-scale operations only.   Litecoins , Dogecoins, and Feathercoins , on the other hand, are three Scrypt-based cryptocurrencies that are the best cost-benefit for beginners. At the current value of Litecoin, a person might earn anywhere from 50 cents to 10 dollars per day using consumer level mining hardware. Dogecoins and Feathercoins would yield slightly less profit with the same mining hardware but are becoming more popular daily. Peercoins , too, can also be a reasonably decent return on your investment of time and energy. As more people join the cryptocoin rush, your choice could get more difficult to mine because more expensive hardware will be required to to discover coins. You will be forced to either invest heavily if you want to stay mining that coin, or you will want to Continue reading >>

Web Mining - Monetize Your Website Through User Browsers

Last updated on February 22nd, 2018 at 12:07 pm Coinhive is a Monero (XMR) miner that runs on users web browsers when theyre visiting certain sites (dont worry, we dont employ this on 99Bitcoins). Recently, The Pirate Bay and CBSs Showtime were busted for running Coinhive on visitors browsers without their knowledge or consent. Before we get into a discussion about how to use Coinhive to monetize your content, lets first discuss why website owners might want to use it instead of the tried-and-true method of online revenue generation: ads. Software that blocks online advertisementsusually referred to as an ad blockeris rapidly becoming the standard. According to PageFair, a company dedicated to analyzing and mitigating this trend, about 615 million devices were using ad blockers at the end of 2016. The total number of internet users in mid-2016 was estimated to be 3.4 billion. This means that around 20% of users employ ad blockers. Because most ad blockers are free and easy to install, there are no immediate downsidesand plenty of upsidesfor their users. The most popular ad blockers include Adblock Plus , AdBlock , andmy personal recommendation uBlock Origin . Origin includes a filter for Coinhive to deny websites free access to your CPUs mining power. In addition to blocking ads and trackers via ad blocking methods, particularly proactive users may opt to go on the offensive with AdNauseam . This browser plug-in not only blocks ads but also spoofs clicks on them, generating false traffic to the detriment of advertisers conversion rates and thereby wasting their advertising budgets. The credibility and effectiveness of online advertising, in general, has been called into question lately by major companies such as Uber . Because the current business model of the internet Continue reading >>

Cloud Mining - How To Mine Bitcoin Without A Miner

Cloud Mining - How To Mine Bitcoin Without A Miner

Heres why you might want to consider cloud mining: A quiet, cooler home no constantly humming fans No equipment to sell when mining ceases to be profitable No ventilation problems with hot equipment Reduced chance of being let down by mining equipment suppliers. Heres why you might not want to consider cloud mining: Less fun (if youre a geek who likes system building!) Lower profits the operators have to cover their costs after all Contractual warnings that mining operations may cease depending on the price of bitcoin In general, there are three forms of remote mining available at the moment: Create a (general purpose) virtual private server and install your own mining software. Lease an amount of hashing power, without having a dedicated physical or virtual computer. (This is, by far, the most popular method of cloud mining.) We have previously covered ways to calculate mining profitability . However, the web services offered are designed to work with your hardware parameters, not cloud-mining parameters. Even so, you can still use these calculators by thinking clearly about the costs involved. Profitability calculators (for example, The Genesis Block)often ask for your electricity costs, and sometimes the initial investment in hardware. Effectively, you are being asked for your ongoing costs and your one-off investments. Therefore, since the provider, not you, is paying the electricity bills, you can enter the monthly mining bill in place of the electricity cost. The conversion process isnt completely straightforward, though. In the case of hardware miners, you can work out the monthly running cost by multiplying your electricity charge (ie: $ per KWh) by the power consumption of the unit and by a conversion factor of 0.744 (the ratio of seconds per month to joules o Continue reading >>

How To Block Cryptocurrency Miners In Your Web Browser

How To Block Cryptocurrency Miners In Your Web Browser

How to Block Cryptocurrency Miners in Your Web Browser Cryptocurrency miners are a new scourge on the web. Web pages can now embed JavaScript code that runs in your web browser to mine themselves Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies using your computer. The website keeps the cryptocurrency, and you get higher electric bills, 100% CPU usage that drags down your computer, and reduced battery life. This problem first came to popular attention with the CoinHive script, which ran when you visited The Pirate Bay, but there are other mining scripts and other websites using them. In fact, researchers even discovered a method that allows a site to mine cryptocurrency after youve closed the browser tab . So what can you do? Thankfully, there is some software that can help. Web browser developers are debating ways to stop cryptocurrency miners. For example, Google Chromes developers are discussing how to solve the problem in this bug tracker thread . Chromes developers dont want to just keep a blacklist of cryptocurrency miners, so theyre considering adding a permission that prevents web pages from constantly using all your CPU resources without your permission. Some adblockers also block cryptocurrency miners, but we dont recommend using those because the web runs on ads. Blocking all ads will only encourage more websites to use cryptocurrency miners and other terrible things against users without adblock. Hopefully, browser developers will decide on a solution that helps protect everyone from cryptocurrency miners in the future. Option One: Use Antimalware Software That Blocks Miners Whats the Best Antivirus for Windows 10? (Is Windows Defender Good Enough?) While web browsers themselves arent blocking cryptocurrency miners yet, some antimalware and antivirus programs already are. Continue reading >>

Creators Of In-browser Cryptocurrency Miner 'coinhive' Say Their Reputation Couldn't Be Much Worse

Creators of In-Browser Cryptocurrency Miner 'Coinhive' Say Their Reputation Couldn't Be Much Worse Hackers are planting code on websites designed to use visitors computers to mine cryptocurrency. The creators of Coinhive, one of the most popular variants, say they didnt see it coming. Hijacking websites to mine cryptocurrency is all the rage. Over the weekend, hackers compromised a popular plugin used by thousands of websites, and tweaked it to inject code that caused visitors browsers to generate digital coins on the hackers behalf. That campaign took advantage of Coinhive , likely the most popular browser-based cryptocurrency miner at the moment, and which splits any mined cryptocurrencyin this case, Monerowith the Coinhive team. But in an interview with Motherboard, the anonymous Coinhive developers said they didnt quite anticipate that hackers would take advantage of their code, and acknowledged that cryptojacking, as the practice is sometimes called, is here to stay, at least for a while. We were quite overwhelmed by the extremely fast adoption, a member of the Coinhive team told Motherboard in an email. In hindsight, we were also quite naive in our assumptions on how the miner would be used. We thought most sites would use it openly, letting their users decide to run it for some goodies, as we did with our test implementation on pr0gramm.com before the launch. Which is not at all what happened in the first few days with Coinhive. The project has mined the equivalent of a few million USD in total, the team member said. Typically, 70 percent of that will go to the users. But Coinhive added that the recent plugin-related campaign, which also impacted US and UK government websites, only mined only 0.1 Monero, or $24money which Coinhive says it hasnt paid out to the a Continue reading >>

Sign up or login to join the discussions! Now even YouTube serves ads with CPU-draining cryptocurrency miners Ad campaign lets attackers profit while unwitting users watch videos. YouTube was recently caught displaying ads that covertly leach off visitors' CPUs and electricity to generate digital currency on behalf of anonymous attackers, it was widely reported. Word of the abusive ads started no later than Tuesday, as people took to social media sites to complain their antivirus programs were detecting cryptocurrency mining code when they visited YouTube. The warnings came even when people changed the browser they were using, and the warnings seemed to be limited to times when users were on YouTube. Great now my browser everytime I watch youtube... my anti virus always blocking coinhive because malware . They said the attackers behind the ads were abusing Google's DoubleClick ad platform to display them to YouTube visitors in select countries, including Japan, France, Taiwan, Italy, and Spain. The ads contain JavaScript that mines the digital coin known as Monero. In nine out of 10 cases, the ads will use publicly available JavaScript provided by Coinhive, a cryptocurrency-mining service that's controvers Continue reading >>

Browser-based Cryptocurrency Mining Makes Unexpected Return From The Dead

Browser-based Cryptocurrency Mining Makes Unexpected Return From The Dead

Browser-Based Cryptocurrency Mining Makes Unexpected Return from the Dead Once thought of as dead, browser-based cryptocurrency mining makes an unlikely return, coming back to haunt websites and their visitors. Browser-based cryptocurrency mining activity exploded in the last few months of 2017. After many years of deathly silence, the catalyst appears to be the launch of a new browser-based mining service in September by Coinhive. This service wraps everything up nicely in an easy-to-use package for website owners and has injected new life into an idea that was long thought of as dead and buried. Browser-based cryptocurrency mining is not new;it's been around since at least 2011. A surge in the cryptocurrency market in 2017, as well as availability of coins that are mineable using home hardware and easy-to-use JavaScript APIs, has led to a torrent of malicious browser-based mining affecting many well-known and lesser-known websites. Mobile devices have not been spared from cryptocurrency mining, as witnessed by a 34 percent increase in the number of mobile apps incorporating cryptocurrency mining code. Browser-based mining, as its name suggests, is a method of cryptocurrency mining that happens inside a browser and is implemented using scripting language. This is different compared to the more widely known file-based cryptocurrency mining approach which involves downloading and running a dedicated executable file. Browser-based mining dates back to May of 2011 when an innovative service called BitcoinPlus.com was initially launched back when Bitcoin was cheap and mining was easynot to be confused with another cryptocurrency known as Bitcoin Plus.org (XBC). That service was in many ways remarkably similar to its modern reincarnation, Coinhive. It used JavaScript code f Continue reading >>

5 Easy Ways To Block Cryptocurrency Mining In Your Web Browser

5 Easy Ways To Block Cryptocurrency Mining In Your Web Browser

5 Easy Ways To Block Cryptocurrency Mining In Your Web Browser Cryptocurrencies are digital or virtual currencies that make use of encryption for security. As they are anonymous and decentralized in nature, one can use them for making payments that cant be tracked by governments. As crypto-mining has gained popularity, the website owners are now using cryptocurrency mining scripts to use the CPU power of the visitors for earning profits. This has also inspired somedevelopers to come up with methods toblock cryptocurrency mining in the web browser via different methods. The Pirate Bay, the worlds most popular torrent website, was recently spotted testing a Monero cryptocurrency miner on their websites. The website confessed that it could be using coin mining in future to keep the website running. This was followed by some other reports of similar nature. This practice isnt new, but the Pirate Bay was the first popular website that was seen using a cryptocurrency miner. This has also fueled the ethics debate as the website owners are found to be keeping the visitors in the dark. However, I was surprised to notice that many users who commented on the article and Facebook didnt mind their favorite website using their CPU power to earn revenue. This could be due to the fact that torrent websites are home to tons of notorious advertising. Before going ahead and telling you how to block cryptocurrency mining in web browser, let me tell you how to find out if youre already becoming a target of such mining activities How to find out if my PC is secretly mining cryptocurrency? Apart from ransomware, bitcoin mining malware are rising in popularity at an exponential rate. In case the culprit is some website which is using your web browser to mine crypto coins, you can find that ou Continue reading >>

How To Stop Sites From Borrowing Your Cpu To Mine Cryptocurrency

How To Stop Sites From Borrowing Your Cpu To Mine Cryptocurrency

Over the weekend, torrent portal The Pirate Bay was caught running a cryptocurrency miner on its website, queitly hijacking visitors computing resources to stack Monero coins, TorrentFreak reported . The Pirate Bay has since confessed its sins on its official blog, claiming the JavaScript mining implementation was only a test as part of their efforts to get rid of all the ads clustered on their site. [W]e also need enough money to keep the site running, the admins said. But should you feel this excuse isnt cutting it for you and if you want to stop other websites from doing the same there are measures you can take to prevent sites from piggybacking on your CPU resources. Available for Chrome, minerBlock and No Coin are handy browser extensions specifically designed to block popular crypto miners from using your computing power. Whats especially handy is that, similar to an ad-blocker, you can choose to remove certain sites from your list of blocked domains in case you want to deliberately lend your CPU for usage. Those interested in more technical details can look up the source code for minerBlock and No Coin (respectively) here and here ; both are available on GitHub. One thing to keep in mind, when making the decision whether or not to get one of these extensions, is that crypto miners like Coinhive , the solution implemented by The Pirate Bay is that they are hard to spot by users; until, of course, you start noticing the sharp increase in CPU usage. Next to these solutions, you can also try using JavaScript-blocking extensions like NoScript (for Firefox ) or ScriptSafe (for Chrome). Another alternative is to manually add the cryptominers in question to your list of blocked domains in ad-blocker. There is nothing inherently wrong with experimenting with alternative Continue reading >>

This story appears in the {{article.article.magazine.pretty_date}} issue of {{article.article.magazine.pubName}}. {{article.article.magazine.subscription_text}} Whilst Bitcoin isn't worth mining for hackers building massive botnets, other cryptocurrencies like Monero are of increasing interest. (Photo by Chesnot/Getty Images) In the online criminal underworld, a booming industry has been born, with as much as $100 million to be made per hacker. It involvesbreaking into people's PCs and smartphones, installing malware on the devices and then forcing them to mine Monero, a cryptocurrency that's become increasingly attractive to ne'er-do-wells of late due to its focus on protecting the identities of its owners. On Tuesday, Cisco's Talos division detailed the extent of the problem. Such is the rise in popularity of cryptomining amongst criminals that it could overtake ransomware as theirfavorite way of making illicit profit, according to Talos. Why? It's partly because with newer coins like Monero, which is currently worth around $275 per token (known as an XMR), the power needed to mine a vast number of coins at speed is small when compared to the likes of Bitcoin. Such mining relies on computing power to solve difficult mathematical problems; once they're solved coins are unlocked. The more power hackers can steal from the PCs they compromise, the quicker they can mine coins. According to Talos data, atypical PC can generate around $0.28 of Monero per day. Where a hacker has control of tens of thousands or even millions of PC Continue reading >>

Web-based Cryptominers Are Malware

Web-based Cryptominers Are Malware

Legitimatecryptominingprograms ask users for permission to run. Malicious versions dont, opting instead to quietly leach a computers resources. SophosLabs is seeing more of the latter variety, with a new twist: Instead of showing up as executable files, they take the form of scripts hidden on websites, mining for cryptocurrency in the browser. Visitors to these sites see no evidence of the mining. The only clues that something may be amiss are their computer slowing down and their fans revving up. Aclear example of this is Coinhive, a Monero miner that first appeared in mid-September. The number of sites hiding it has steadily increased in recent weeks, as cryptocurrency values have taken a wild trajectory skyward. Given their parasitic nature, Sophos has decided to start tagging Coinhive and other JavaScript-based cryptominers as malware to be blocked when users stumble upon a site harboring them. Our position is thatwhen this software is run in any users browser without anorganizations consent, it is parasitic, and should be considered malware because we dont have something called parasiteware today. In instances where an organizationreally wants todonate itsCPU/GPUcycles, and where the mining operation has gone to sufficient lengths to enable vendors like us to easily differentiate between consensual and non-consensual versions, then we can have a discussion about different classifications. Cryptomining is a process used to discover Bitcoin , Monero, and such other cryptocurrencies as Ethereum and Litecoin. It requires massive amounts of computer processing power, which slows down performance and leaves wear and tear. This wasnt always a problem because the activity was largely limited to those who chose to do it. That began to change as cryptocurrency prices skyrock Continue reading >>
