Episode 94: Blockchain, Cryptocurrency & Icos With Boris Mann Of Frontierfoundry

Episode 94: Blockchain, Cryptocurrency & ICOs with Boris Mann of FrontierFoundry Special Guest Boris Mann of FrontierFoundry Special Guest Boris Mann of FrontierFoundry joins host Drew Ogryzek to discuss blockchain, cryptocurrency and ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings). Mann is an active contributor to helping grow Vancouver's technical community, he is involved in open source, running "geek meetups," and started FrontierFroundry with Adrian Jonklaas in March of 2017. FrontierFoundry was concieved with the question in mind, "What kind of company can we build in Vancouver that really has the whole world as its customers; that goes global from day one?" and thinking of areas of frontier technology, a very broad space where there's not a lot of concensus or understanding as to what successful companies in this space look like. This space includes blockchain, augmented reality, and machine learning, and other emerging tech. How are companies in this space funded? How are they created? Who are their customers? Mann explains that blockchain really has three definitions: The computer science innovation of Merkel Tree, and crypto algorithms that enable this concept of a blockchain Instances of public blockchain, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum The blockchain ethos of decentralization, trustlessness, permissionless innovation, and other interesting aspects as a result of global, decentralized networks Definitions, Mann attributes to Lisa Cheng, cofounder of Vanbex and has written about in the FrontierFoundry blog . Mann defines ICOs as ways of offering blockchain tokens or coins to people to buy into that will then fund building a project in some way. According to Mann, the big thing that has happened in the last six to nine months or so, is that the Ethereum blockchain has the ability Continue reading >>

Investing In Icos (meetup) Erik Lagerway Medium

If you read my last post on ICOs, Tokens and Smart Contracts , you would know that in my spare time I am researching ICOs, mostly to understand where the pitfalls are before getting too far into it. Its been interesting to say the least, I could probably write a book from what I have learned in the last 60 days, the subculture is rather colourful. In an effort to get more involved locally, I attended an ICO meetup recently. Gregg Peacock presented Investing in ICOs at Venture Labs . The room was full, standing room only, I am guessing they had to turn a few people away. An interesting question was posed by one of the audience Is Vancouver a favorable place to launch an ICO? Gregg felt like this would not be received well by the local regulators. His recent experience with ICOs led him to believe that the BCSS would be coming down on ICOs setting up shop in BC. Which is rather ironic considering Ethereum was invented primarily by Vitalik Buterin, a Canadian out of Toronto. I suspect that he specifically meant those who are taking money from Canadians who are not a registered with the BCSC. Back in August, the BCSC outlined some laws that may very well extend to token sales in BC . Vancouver is a hotbed for technology, Blockchain innovation is alive and well in the rainy city. Recently Hive Blockchain went public and DMG Blockchain Solutions is in the process of something similar. Gregg did a great job of explaining the ICO landscape and pointed out very early that these events should really be called Token Distribution Events and not ICOs. I tend to agree, ICO is synonymous with IPO and the similarity ends in the name. Tokens are not shares, there are no voting rights and you do not own any fraction of the company that created them. For me thats fine, the token and what Continue reading >>

Bitcoin Vancouver (vancouver, Bc) | Meetup

Bitcoin Vancouver (vancouver, Bc) | Meetup

Years ago, CoinFest began with a specific purpose: to spread Bitcoin adoption among merchants and consumers. Good times were had by all (except the Federal Reserve) as we celebrated with free events at Bitcoin-accepting venues around the city and worldoften simultaneouslyin keeping with decentralized and open source principles.Interest in spreading merchant adoption waned as transaction fees and confirmation times rose. Now, however, Bitcoin has been reinvigorated by institutional adoption of SegWit and the advent of the Lightning Network, a protocol layered on top of Bitcoin's and other blockchains. It allows for instant transactions that are not only vastly cheaper, but can be conducted across blockchains to link them together! Therefore, in a new twist on an old tradition, we're going back to several of our favorite Bitcoin-accepting merchants to set up the Lightning Network using the demo of Adam's upgraded CoinOS POS system. That includes a FOOD TRUCK and a BREWERY, both of which will be bringing their goods to several of the events. The system will be very beta and require downloading the CoinOS mobile app, but standard network fees are now pretty low regardless for those who want to do it the old-fashioned way.DCTRL Vancouver will host the first and last events and serve as a hub to coordinate activity. This includes hosting the International Hangout, which creates a decentralized audience by setting up projectors and camera feeds at multiple locations around the world. Other participating cities include Manchester, Arnhem and Gaborone.Bitcoin restaurants and bars will also feature prominently in the event schedule. We will visit the home of the worlds first Bitcoin ATM, the first Indian restaurant in the world to accept Bitcoin, the Bestie sausage parlor, and mo Continue reading >>
