Detective Activities For Kids

Detective Activities For Kids

When your child snoops in your closet, rummages through the garbage or tries to flush the cat down the toilet, he's not trying to be naughty -- he's just being the natural investigator he was born to be. Kids love to explore the world around them. Let your toddler or preschooler play detective with activities that are as educational as they are entertaining. Get your little gumshoe his own magnifying glass and let him loose in the park or yard to play nature detective. Tell him how common things look different up close. Point out the veins in leaves, watch a ladybug crawl on a flower or examine a fresh paw print in the dirt. Turn the activity into a scavenger hunt by making a list of things for your child to find, such as a blue feather, an ant hill or a marigold flower. A nature preserve is an ideal spot for this activity -- just remember to tell him to look, not touch. Help your tot examine the fingerprints of everyone in the family with an ink pad and some blank paper. Compare the prints of unrelated adults, such as mom and dad, to siblings' prints. For a fun twist, try lifting your own fingerprints from a shiny surface such as a glass or stainless steel toaster. Just help your little one gently brush some cocoa powder onto fingerprints with a soft, clean make-up brush. Then lay a piece of clear packing tape over the powder, peel it up and place it on a white index card. Help your little detective match the fingerprints to someone in the house. If your child is a fan of the popular television show "Blue's Clues," get your own similar game going at home. All you need to play are paw-print stickers (or some other fun design), a small note pad and a crayon. Create a mystery by choosing an activity, such as playing baseball, and putting stickers on clues. For example, y Continue reading >>

Almost Unschoolers: Encouraging Critical Thinking For Children In The Summer - Sidewalk Chalk Cryptograms

Encouraging Critical Thinking for Children in the Summer - Sidewalk Chalk Cryptograms I snuck (or sneaked, for my non-American friends) out early this morning, before the children were awake, to chalk out a quick cryptogram puzzle for them to discover, and hopefully, solve later in the the day. Who says we have to give up teaching thinking skills, just because it's summer? I read an interview with a female engineer (I forget who, now) reflecting on the events in her childhood, that had encouraged her into pursuing a math heavy career. One of the things she remembered most was a daily puzzle, put up by her father, on a chalkboard in their kitchen, for the family to race to solve. I would love to do that eventually, but I haven't found the right chalkboard to fit with our new house, yet. In the meantime, we have plenty of patio space here and there around the yard, the weather is fine, and I want the children outside, anyway. So, a sidewalk chalk puzzle seemed like a natural fit for summer. Kid Zone has a fantastic cryptogram maker . You just type in your own message (or let the computer choose one for you), indicate how many clues to give, and it generates the puzzle for you. I decided to start out with a familiar Bible memory verse for our first try. I'm all about killing two birds with one stone. If we can strengthen strategic thinking, and build better Bible knowledge at the same time - so much the better. The book of the Bible is included at the end, but the chapter and verse are not (one final challenge for the children). Can you solve the puzzle, and find the verse? Continue reading >>

1-2 hours, depending on the number of participants and computers. Secrets appeal to teenagers, and codes and ciphers are always popular. This program combines technology and intrigue. It can also be developed without computers if access is limited. Teens will learn to create a simple cipher that substitutes one symbol for every letter, using the Microsoft Webdings font. They will explore Morse code and other codes, and integrate mathematics with entertainment. For the program, teens will need access to a computer that has the webdings font. Each participant will need a copy of the webdings fonts to create their own code. It is available on the Web site at www.myfonts.com/fonts/microsoft/webdings/webdings/ charmap.html . Teens use the worksheet to assign a symbol to each letter of the alphabet. Remind them that they need to create a cheat sheet for the code so that they and their friends can crack their codes. If you dont have access to enough computers, incorporate some paper puzzles and math games into your program. Incorporate Morse code into your bulletin board and publicity. Reading Comprehension & Assessment Activities You gave your students a reading activity from the class textbook, but how do you know they understood the material? How do you assess your students to see if they learned the information taught in class? Most teachers give various worksheets or written tests asking questions about what they read or learned, but that can become repetitious and boring for students. So what can a catechist do to make sure their students understand the material? Here are a few suggestions for your students to do that might come in handy: 1. Draw a picture of a character in the story. List the traits of the character on the back of the paper. Collect the pictures and have the students play Who am I? guessing game using the pictures. 2. Make a time-line of what happened in the story using pictures or words. They can even make a comic strip. 3. Have the students come up with a skit about the story or topic. They can also use puppets and make them. They could even perform this for another class. 4. Break the students into groups and have them make a game for other students to play about the story/topic. 5. Have the students come up with a craft or activity about the story/topic. 6. Use a Venn diagram to compare characters/topics. The catechist can even do this on the board with the class. 7. Break the students into groups and have them make a worksheet or puzzle to demonstrate their understanding of what you are teaching. 8. Play games to promote vocabulary building. Hangman- Give the students a clue about the word and have them fill in the blanks to determine the word. Vocab Dart Board- Use a real dart board or magnetic dart board. List the vocabulary words on the chalk/dry erase board. Assign each vocabulary word a number from the dart board and Continue reading >>

Printable Cryptograms

Printable Cryptograms

Printable cryptograms puzzles on this site are fun to solve and are absolutely free. These puzzles contain anencrypted message that students decode by substituting letters corresponding to the numbers below the blanks. To find letters that correspond to the numbers, students use a key displaying a row of letters and numbers. To make these printable cryptogramsmore engaging, I have given them my own twist. At the beginning of the cryptogram,a question is posed that sets the purpose for students to decode the message. The answer to thequestion is revealed when students have completely decrypted thehidden message. Additionally,in theseprintable cryptograms, Ihave also integrated math and literacy skills so that while students areengaged indecoding the message, they are also practicing math and literacy skills. So how do they practice math skills in this activity? Here is the answer. Instead of having them simply substitute letters corresponding to the numbers under the blanks, I have introduced math operations below the blanks. In order to find the one to one correspondence between aletter and number, they need to haveonly onenumber underneath the blank. So when they come across an operation below the blank, they first have to solve it to find a number for which they can find a corresponding letter. To introduce literacy, the encrypted message may take the form of definitions, facts, poems, riddles, or a lesson concept students have recently learned. Cryptogram puzzles include easy, medium, and hard levels to facilitate differentiation. The easy level contains more of simple substitution and fewer math operations limited to addition and subtraction only. The medium level includes mostly multiplication and some sprinkling of division. The hard level becomes more challenging Continue reading >>

Cryptograms are secret messages or codes. People have been using cryptograms to send important information for many centuries. Cryptograms were very important in World War II when both armies had to keep their messages secret from the other side. Every letter is usually assigned another letter or a number and the message can only be decoded if you have the right key. That way, only the people who are supposed to read the message can read it and everyone else can only see a jumbled up message. Investigate different uses for cryptograms on the internet. After you have learned about how cryptograms work, using multiplication, you will create a cryptogram for your classmates to solve. Research information on cryptology at the Build a Code website . Use the Cryptography Vocabulary worksheet to keep track of all the different terms and words you need to know. Navigate to the Cryptograms Weekly on the word-game-world.com website to solve a cryptogram. Copy and paste the cryptogram into a word document to save some paper. If you need a hint, scroll down to the bottom of the page for the key, which will help you solve the puzzle. Create a cryptogram sample at Kidzone - Cryptogram Maker website. Follow the instructions on the page to create your own cryptogram. Create a chart with multiplication problems and products for each letter A-Z using the Crack the Code worksheet . Do not repeat any products or problems. Decide on a message to send to a friend and make sure your message is between 3-5 sentences long. After you have decided on your message, write the code that matches it using your completed chart. Put blanks underneath each letter and put at least five spaces between each word. Write down at least two clues to help solve your cryptogram. If you cant to decide on a way to Continue reading >>
