British Touring Car Championship Reveals 2017 Tbls And Team Line-up

British Touring Car Championship reveals 2017 TBLs and team line-up Share this article on Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google+ Email The British Touring Car Championship has issued a list of the teams granted TOCA BTCC Licences (TBLs) to compete in the series in 2017. The category operates a system where each entry must have a licence to claim a place on the grid. There are a maximum of 32 TBLs, 30 of which are held by teams and two permanently held by organiser TOCA. Among the changes, the Motorbase Performance team will run three Ford Focus cars in the category next season after fielding two in 2016. The AmD Tuning team will now operate two cars, with a second Audi S3 saloon due to join the line-up. BTC Racing, which has previously run SEATs and Chevrolets in the category, will make a return in 2017 with two Chevrolet Cruze machines. Those cars were previously fielded by Power Maxed Racing, which is switching to a factory-blessed Vauxhall Astra. Welch Motorsport, which ran the Proton Persona for Dan Welch in 2016, has dropped out of the series and its licence has been loaned to Motorbase. * = One TBL on loan from Welch Motorsport Motorbase Performance will focus solely on the BTCC in 2017 by calling time on its British GT and Blancpain GT campaigns. Motorbase won the British GT crown in 2012 with Michael Caine and Daniele Perfetti driving a Porsche 997 GT3-R. Since '14, it has operated Aston Martins. Team boss David Bartrum did not rule out a return to GT racing in the future. "We've raced with and against some great people in that time and it's by no means the end of sportscar racing for Motorbase, but I feel that it's the right time for us to regroup and to put all of our efforts into building on last season's BTCC success," he explained. "We're talking to some great Continue reading >>

The championship featured a mix of professional motor racing teams and privately funded amateur drivers competing in highly modified versions of family cars which are sold to the general public and conform to the technical regulations for the championship. The 2017 season was the 60th British Touring Car Championship season and the seventh season for cars conforming to the Next Generation Touring Car (NGTC) technical specification. With both BMW and Vauxhall returning to the series this year as manufacturer outfits - joining the existing Honda , Subaru and MG teams, the 2017 season featured five manufacturer backed teams on the grid for the first time since the end of the popular Super Touring era of the sport. There's really nothing quite like it. What makes it so good? The formula seems very simple: Ordinary saloon cars stripped out and adapted for racing with high-tech but not over the top performance improvements and a clever handicap system to make sure no-one has an unfair advantage. The result? Every year we're left amazed by how every single one of the 30 races throughout the season is packed with close racing which puts championships with much, much bigger team budgets to shame. With more manufacturer-backed teams this season than at any point since the end of the old Super Touring regs this is the best bang-for-your-buck entertainment in motorsport today. 2017 was no exception to the rule: how can you ask for more than going in to the last round with the overall champion still to be decided? Would it be Ash Sutton (in only his second year), or could Colin Turkington overhaul the points deficit? The season review is crammed with beautifully shot bumper-to-bumper racing at some of the best circuits Britain can offer, filmed from seemingly every angle -including in the cars themselves- and expertly commentated upon. At nearly four hours of footage on two discs th Continue reading >>

Following the Kent-based outfit's most successful season to date - which saw David Bartrum's team commemorate its 10thAnniversary in the championship by taking top honours in both the Independent Teams and Drivers' standings - the Team Boss confirmed that 2017 preparations are already well underway. "The 2016 season was a great year for Motorbase Performance taking both the Independent Teams and Drivers trophies, but we're ready to step it up a gear in 2017;" commented Bartrum. "These are really exciting times for Motorbase. We have a fantastic new title sponsor behind us as well as the backing of some of our long-standing partners and this has enabled us to push forward our plans to bring the third Focus out on track for our 2017 campaign." The squad's Focus ST was one of the highest performing cars on the grid this season securing 7 wins and 7 podiums, with a further 15 Independent race wins and 21 podiums shared between the #7 and #77 Motorbase-built machines. Mat Jackson also jointly topped the table of most race wins for the season taking 5 outright wins in the #7 Focus as well as the enviable accolade of having led the most laps during the 30 round championship. "We've shown that we have one of the best packages on the grid this year and with some tweaks over the Winter, we expect the Focus to be back up there competing at the front again in 2017;" added Bartrum. Me And My Motor: Jason Plato On Top Gear, The Btcc And A Lancia Crash

Me and my motor: Jason Plato on Top Gear, the BTCC and a Lancia crash The racing driver crashed a Lancia after an awkward family gathering OVERthe course of his two-decade career, Jason Plato has lifted more driving trophies than Lewis Hamilton. The reason your teenager wont have posters of him on the wall, though, and why he has yet to be papped with Rihanna, is that he drives in the British touring car championship (BTCC), which for all its exhilarating, bumper-nudging thrills has yet to achieve the profile of Formula One. It has a solid fanbase, however, attracting crowds of more than 40,000, and Plato, 48, is its leading light. He has won more races (94) and achieved more fastest laps (84) than anyone else, and has finished in the top three 12 times, winning the championship in 2001 and 2010, and narrowly missing out last year. Browse NEW or USED cars for sale on driving.co.uk Until 2014 he was also a presenter on Fifth Gear (that other, lesser-spotted car show). He and Chris Evans, Top Gears new presenter, are old friends so was he disappointed not to find himself in the new line-up? Naa, naa, not at all, Plato insists. My face didnt fit, probably because of Fifth Gear. He has enormous respect for Evans, declares himself a fan of Chris Harris, another of the new presenters, and thinks signing up the actor Matt LeBlanc (that American guy cant remember his name) is a stroke of genius. Plato burst into his parents bedroom and found them, as he puts it, up to no good quite graphic no good Platos first car was a VW Beetle, bought with a 300 loan from his father, followed quickly by a Citron 2CV. Then, in the mid-1980s, he started working for his father, who was an early seller of mobile phone insurance. I had it stipulated in my contract that my first company car would Continue reading >>

The announcement of TEAM BMW is a landmark occasion, marking BMWs return to the countrys best-watched motor race series as a manufacturer team. It has been 21 years since the marque last contested the series in this manner, when BMW Team Schnitzer fielded a BMW 320i line-up. Graeme Grieve, CEO of BMW Group UK, commented: The BTCC is one of the most significant race series in the UK and has a huge and enthusiastic following. With a history of success and the continuous support of WSR for the past decade, we are delighted to step up as a Manufacturer Team again after 21 years. BMW UKs significant financial investment in the BTCC team includes the funding of technical developments on all fronts, focused on the very latest BMW engine derivative. At the launch at BMW Park Lane, London, Graeme Grieve joined WSR Team Principal, Dick Bennetts, to remove the wraps from one of the three BMW 125i M Sport team cars that will contest the 2017 BTCC. With the cars freshly-developed, prepared and run again by WSR, BMWs return to the Series as a Manufacturer coincides with a further landmark, marking a decade since WSR first contested the BTCC with BMW, which has endured to this day. The BMW relationship with Dick Bennetts Sunbury-based operation in the BTCC was established i Continue reading >>

Btcc 2017 Is Go! - Mg Car Club

Btcc 2017 Is Go! - Mg Car Club

The BTCC drivers, teams, and suppliers assembled at Donington Park Circuit on March 16th to reveal their plans for the 2017 season. Some information had been announced since the start of the year, but many liveries, sponsors and technical changes were still to be confirmed. Donington Park is under new management with MSV having taken a twenty-one-year lease. Changes and improvements are promised, but the challenging circuit will be retained. The most obvious event visible on arrival was the re-surfacing of the paddock. The building blocks of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship remain unchanged for 2017. Dunlop, as the title sponsor, will continue to supply all the tyres, but the standard tyre is wider and made of a new compound rubber. There will again be a special tyre for Thruxton and an option tyre at every other meeting which must be used in one of the three races. At some circuits, this will be softer, and at others, harder than the standard. The ITV contract is in place with live coverage continuing on ITV4. This will include coverage of all the support races. On the technical side, all the cars which use the spec TOCA engine have a completely new power unit for 2017 based on a GM design. The cars will now be required to use the RML subframes and suspension components. The combination of old and new parts used in the MG6s in 2016 being no longer permitted. All MG enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that the 888 MG6s will again be taking up their allocated championship places in 2017. Ashley Sutton has moved to the Subaru team to pilot a Levorg and Josh Cook will be seen behind the wheel of a Ford Focus. This means that MG welcome two new drivers in Aron Taylor-Smith and Daniel Lloyd. Aron has a long history of success and race wins in the BTCC and Dan Continue reading >>

Why Its A Two-horse Race For The 2017 Btcc Drivers Title

Why Its A Two-horse Race For The 2017 Btcc Drivers Title

Why its a two-horse race for the 2017 BTCC drivers title This weekend, its the final round of the 2017 British Touring Car Championship, and while technically speaking, its a four-way battle, heres why we (and probably almost everyone else) will be reporting as though its really just down to two. I ran a quick poll on Twitter ahead of the last race at Silverstone, asking how many drivers would still be in contention for the championship after the weekend? I had my own view (which was two). The result of the poll said there would be between three and four. How many #BTCC drivers will still be in contention for the drivers' title after this weekend at Silverstone? Neil Hudson (@neilhudson) September 15, 2017 Im going to declare though, that were both right, heres why: Team BMR Subaru driver Ash Sutton heads to the Brands Hatch circuit with a 10-point lead over West Surrey BMWs Colin Turkington, while the Team Dynamics Honda of Gordon Shedden is 66 points back, and Speedworks Toyota driver Tom Ingram is 67 behind, with exactly 67 points left to play for. From a mathematical standpoint then, Shedden and Ingram are still in it, but neither are counted as realistic contenders, and in fact, could both be ruled out on Saturday afternoon after qualifying. What Ingram and Shedden would have to achieve over the weekend is actually the same, despite the one-point difference between them. In the case of a tie-break, with anyone tying on points with Sutton, the champion would then be the driver who had the most wins during the season. If Shedden won all three races on Sunday and scored all the available bonus points, hed be one point ahead of Sutton if he missed one of those points, hed tie on points, but then with only four victories for the season against Suttons six, Sutton would Continue reading >>

British Touring Car Championship: A Gentleman's Guide To Btcc | British Gq

British Touring Car Championship 2016 kicked off in spectacular style at Brands Hatch at the beginning of April, and the next round is just around the corner. Warning: this is not prim and proper Formula 1 , this is its wilder, bolshier bruiser of a cousin. GQ spoke to Honda Halfords Yuasa Racing drivers reigning champion Gordon Shedden and three-time BTCC champion Matt Neal to get the lowdown on what you need to know about British Touring Car. Touring cars are road cars like youve never seen them before GS A touring car is like a road car times a thousand. We start with a Honda Civic Type R , and then we take it to bits, get rid of the bits we dont need, the stereo goes, the air con goes, we take it right back down to nothing and then we build it as a bespoke race car. Its similar but very different a road car needs to last twenty years, and do hundreds of thousands of miles. These race cars literally go back down to the last nut and bolt after every single event. Theyre proper works of engineering. MN A Type R road car you can by for 30,000 - these cars cost about 250,000 to build each. They need very painstaking maintenance every time they go out: they need nurturing. Dont get me wrong, its not a free-for-all: we cant just smash into each other. You can get points on your race licence, bans, the same as anything.
